- I do not like Sonic Unleashed that much, and this replay genuinely solidified this in my eyes. There are aspects of the game I truly enjoyed but overall it was not a very enjoyable experience. Hopefully we can all be civil about it and discuss nicely tho (:
The Reason I used Unleashed Project gameplay is because I didn't think the footage I recorded on rpcs3 was consistent enough fps wise to make for a good video as recording it was pretty tasking on my computer!
I played this game like 6 months ago for the first time, I was actually expecting to not like it since I'd heard so much bad from it but I just ended up loving it. I think objectively this game just really depends on what you want from a sonic game

The irony is that most sonic fans don't actually know what they want out of a sonic game. Hence all the discourse every single time a new game does so much as even TRY to do anything that isn't just strictly "play as sonic and go fast 24/7"
Although I can’t say I agree with your stance on the game, I can respect that you made a very good argument about the flaws revolving Sonic Unleashed
For example, I for one love using combat as the Werehog and challenging myself to find new creative ways to illuminate enemies and I find the slower platforming a neat challenge. So I don’t mind that the wear hog takes up a good majority of the game, but that’s just me and I can completely understand if someone doesn’t enjoy that.
I like Unleashed for everything it does right, but if something sucked… it REALLY fucking sucks.
This was a pretty well organized talk. I personally love unleashed, even with some of the undeniable flaws it has, but I understand why it isn't for everyone. It's definetly an acquired taste and can easily be described as a diet version of much more complex hack and slash games that already existed, and even if I don't think they could do something that different with the genre (after all, the game had to be accessible to kids and your average devil may cry can be hard to master) it's definetly something that holds it back for many. However, this video made me want to think about something... Is the fact that the S ranks are broken that detrimental when generations, one of your favourite sonic games and my favourite game of all time, has the same problem? Usually I respond to this kind of complaint by saying that the levels in gens are full of depth and new things to discover that make the game hella fun to master even if the S ranks are piss easy, so is that a massive issue in unleashed or is it just a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things? I, for once, am not certain...
For me it's not the Werehog stages that ruin it for me, not that at all. It's just the controls and handling of both Sonic and the Werehog. It's terrible and makes every stage unfun.
I dont know why people like the daytime stages and nighttime stages, Sonic is wayyyyyy too fast and it feels like his shoes are made out of butter, The werehog is extremely slow and i think the combat is ok but the puzzles and platforming are brutal and frustrating. Also i hate the medals and just want to progress without having to collect stuff like the adventure games which are underrated and do not deserve the hate because they are genuinely amazing games.
@@teiuq1614 I don't get how you can like the werewolf combat tho. I'm not fully upgraded but there is only 1 move and u get it later where u can move and attack....everything else is stationary and spamming nonstop....and I upgraded combat and strength ONLY and it's still unbearable at times. The 'u can punch an enemy forever until u stop punching it' mechanic on every single mob enemy is terrible. But all the problems really stem from the tankiness of the enemies and the fact u can't move while attacking. i srsly skip enemies when it lets me.

I don't outright hate this game, but I do think people overreact about it. The game is a 7.5/10 from me. I actually think the Werehog is the best part of this game, and most of the issues I have with the game are in the Day stages. The controls here are very loose, mainly the drift which has caused me to fall off more edges than I can count. Also, what I kind of don't understand is how the Werehog is a fully 3D gameplay style, and fans who love the 3D games still aren't fans of it. I know the Werehog is its own thing; I just recently thought about that to myself. The medal collecting isn't horrible, but it's still ridiculous to have progression locked to them regardless if you know where they are or not. The most fun I had with this game is the Werehog, and the Day stages, which were supposed to set a future example, in my opinion, they fail at doing that.
TLDR: Sonic Unleashed is a pretty good game, although its flaws should not go ignored.

The medals alone were the final thing to not make me like this game. On your 2nd playthrough it's not an issue, but on your first time, you're going to have to replay those dreadful Werehog stages most likely multiple times.
In my opinion, this game is the pinnacle of mid. It didn’t deserve a review of 4.5(IGN) but more like a 5, because it’s mid. Most people praise this game for its daytime stages. But in my opinion, generations did it better anyway. Generations does the right mix of speed and platforming, this prevents the levels feeling like straight lines, and the platforming is pretty fun too. Unleashed does NONE of this, it kinda tries to though, but usually fails. Dragon road day is a good example of this with that terrible spinning platforming section. ITS NOT FUN, I’m waiting and waiting for some stupid spinny thing to finally reach me and it’s so annoying and boring. Rooftop run is the only level to get it right for ONE SECTION OF THE LEVEL WHICH IS SHORT ANYWAY. Near the beginning of rooftop run, there is a pretty good platforming section, last 2 seconds and we’re back to near straight lines again. The rest of the levels have almost no platforming, or platforming that is boring, or last 2 seconds. Now onto the werehog, we really got people out here trying to defend this garbage and it’s just crazy to me, it’s button mashing, THATS LITERALLY IT, that’s not fun, and along with it being button mashing, these levels are LONG, 20 minutes of just button mashing gets BORING. There is also the QTES, which are kinda fun I guess, but it makes the levels take even longer than they already do, since you now got these slow motion cutscenes, and doing QTES all the time will eventually get boring, because your in levels longer now, which further motives you to just button mashing instead, because that’s what will get the job done faster and easier. QTES also give a bunch of score, making A and S ranks EASY in werehog levels. The one good thing about unleashed ranking system, which is the fact that it’s hard, is now made generations level, because QTES makes it easy. In my eyes, this just motives button mashing in first play through, and then go back to this garbage to the. QTE spam for a better rank. Last but no least, eggmanland. I think this is the WORST stage in sonic history, it’s long, it’s rigged, it’s boring, I HATE THIS STAGE. Let’s just not pretend as if this WASNT the intent. I beat this level in 68 MINUTES, and I still got a C rank, A C RANK FOR 68 MINUTES, WHAT WERE THEY ON!?!?!?. I hate this stage with a burning passion, and will never replay it in my life.

I am an overzealous Sonic Unleashed fanboy, but even I will admit there are issues with the game. While I don't agree with you're stance, I do understand your points.
- The Werehog never really bothered me, but it is quite slow at times, and the QTEs and camera pans halt the pacing. Plus, enemies aren't that advanced or unique.
- Progression in the game is tiring, when I have to go to Prof. Pickle over and over again. My idea is the first act is locked as usual, but Act 2A of the story has three levels open (Spagonia, Chun-Nan, and Holaska), and once you beat all the bosses, the other 3 areas unlocks. Then 3rd act has Eggmandland.
- Boost gameplay is very good, but it is very easy to get full boost. Unwiished has a better implementation of boost with high risk and reward (that option would be toggleable)
- Tails and Amy could've been better in interaction.
- Medals and EXP NEED to be balanced.
My love for this game comes from how this wonderful game introduced me to this wonderful series (for better or worse). Given the chance, I would definitely remaster the game and make it beloved for both newcomers and veterans alike.
The Werehog's Ranking and Score system is definitely a huge flaw, I'll give you that...

I don't think "get good" is a good argument against criticism, at least not for everything. Yeah, you should have some skill, but if I don't like something, I shouldn't have to 100% a game for what I say to be valid.
Great video Unleash is not for everyone and it all depends what type of player you are. Another question is I noticed in your previous videos that your not really passionate about the lore and world building of Sonic is there a reason why??
For me unleashed is a 50/50 experience. I mean it's 50% day and night.
I usually beat day stages in 2-5 minutes while night stages in 2-7 minutes. Also Eggmanland in 10 minutes.
Honestly I think this has the best modern sonic gameplay in my opinion. Generations is also great but I really have a problem with the stomp and also the light dash can only be used in glowing rings and the levels in generations except for maybe green hill, rooftop run and chemical plant are made for adventure style gameplay.
The main Unleashed day stages have a continuous flow for the boost. There isn't a time in the fastest route in stages where I have to stop boosting to platform with dragon road being the exception.
I'm not gonna say much about the werehog since there are many opinions about it. Either people really enjoy it like me, or people find it boring either because they don't like slow gameplay in a sonic game or they find it too basic for a hack and slash style of gameplay
I’m sorry but once I heard you say that the generations levels are better than unleashed I just had to say my personal opinion. I think the unleashed levels are better than generations levels because of the fact that the unleashed levels had more of a challenge to them. While they are both fast I just find the pacing of unleashed levels to be faster and overall more fun, where as in generations while the levels are still good, but they focus way more on platforming rather than exhilarating reaction based levels which I much prefer. One way that you might enjoy the werehog more is pulling off more that a few combos, while it isn’t necessary it does make the werehog levels more fun to play. While I do admit the werehog is filler, the variety of different combos show how much care they put in to making the werehog fun and not just a slow and button mushy beat ‘em up style game and you might enjoy the werehog a lot more than you did on your previous playthroughs.

This suggests that the werehog ISNT fun, and come on, you know that’s not true. If you only like the day stages, play the unleashed project.
I never play for points as the werehog so many of it doesn’t apply to me but I understand if you play for ranks also the QTEs are quick and fast which is why they reward you with many points to begin with also you completely forgot to mention leveling system upgrading strength and combos or one of the best things to do as the werehog because using overpowered combos to destroy the enemies is one of the best parts of the game but I do feel like the werehog controls weird tho and his movement is tricky to pull off

You bring up a lot of solid points here. Unleashed is easily one of the most flawed Sonic games, and while I'm happy people are starting to appreciate it I think we are at the point where its being over-praised lol. Feels like we're so desperate for a remaster because the game is weighed down by so much small dumb shit that really piles up (medals, weird progression, plane levels, level length etc.) that could be changed/reworked to drastically improve the game.
My only issue with the video is that there are some strange blanket points you make (like when you said Gens levels are strictly better than Unleashed's, but don't explain why. Imo they are both great but for different reasons, Gens is not perfect). And things like the title seem like they're there just to be contrarian and provoke fans of the game.
People judge media by their own subjective criteria and experience things their own way. I know people who like the Werehog but hate Classic Sonic in Gens. Unleashed isn't an inherently bad game, but it has issues that are worth discussing. You can't rly just call it "not good", that seems unfair.
Besides that great vid, it's nice to see some fresh Sonic takes to make discussion more interesting.
No it's just a bad game. There is no reason why that werehog should be in the game. It's boring, clunky, and I don't want to play it. It's the reason I hesitate buying the game again because it's not worth. The daytime levels are also bad. They don't control well. It feels like the mach 6 sections in sonic unleashed. Unleashed has been over praised recently and it needs to stop. Sonic team finally got their heads in the right spot, what we don't need is for fans begging for them to go back to a style that really never worked for them to begin with. Play sonic colors or generations if you want better level design, boost gameplay, and control. Unleashed is the worst sonic game next to secret rings.

Nah, your opinion sucks. “Worst next to Secret Rings” has to be the biggest stretch of an argument when Sonic Boom, Sonic Forces, Sonic Lost World, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic ‘06, Sonic 4, and many other failed projects exist.
@@joshuagaudin2086 all of those games besides sonic & the secret rings and forces are better than unleashed. Sonic lost world is one of my favorites, the level design and control of speed was implemented well. It just had garbage bosses. But sonic unleashed for me is borderline unplayable. Especially on PS3. The frame rate drops below 30 constantly, the controls are wonky and too loose, the storyline is terrible, the characters are annoying. This is the first game where Sonic's friends felt like background characters. It was the first 3d mainline sonic game to feature only sonic. And that werehog was ass. Why play a bland hack n slash in a sonic game? Not only that, you can't even run past those sections. You have to beat every enemy. For me, sonic unleashed is my least favorite sonic game. I think its ambition really kills the experience because it's like Sega throwing ideas out and seeing which one sticks.
You want a version of "Sonic Unleashed" that is actually good? Play the Wii/PS2 version. The day stage controls are significantly tighter, sun/moon medals are based on your performance in a stage, the werehog stages don't last NEARLY as long, and the overall package just feels more consistent.
Now Daviron here's the real question would you be up for a sonic unleashed remake.
This still has more soul than frontiers and maybe superstars.

Very much agree, while I don’t hate unleashed i think it’s just meh the werehog can be fun its more aggravating with not being able to grab things sometimes, the long tedious levels, the battle music, combos just being unnecessary, and how you loose your points just because you died from the game not working or just a slip up. The boost levels are pretty good but I hate the slippery controls especially when you go slow in the mini hub worlds to get into the levels and getting the medals, also the drift is awful don’t care if it’s a “skill issue” it just should’ve been made better at least it’s not like frontiers. So verdict Generations is better(also unleashed story is pretty good)

I actually decided to recently go back and play this game on the Xbox. I played it back in the day when it first came out but I never completed it because I disliked it. And one thing that has put me off after going back to it now many years later is how clunky the controls are. Sonic Adventures in older game has better controls…. I also don’t like how you have to progress in the game by acquiring tokens.

I bought it last week for ps3. Every criticism people have of this game is valid. It's not the bad fps....it's everything. I have seriously givenup twice in the middle of werewolf missions out of sheer frustration and boredome knowing I'll have to play it again from the start AGAIN if I want to continue. I have had to redo missions cause of glitches...werewolf missions cause the enemies got glitched. I CANNOT STAND THE CONTROL THEY ARE TERRIBLE. I swear that drifting is BROKEN on ps3, cause there is no way in helllll this works...I got 1 drift to work properly out of 100. It's true this is the fastest sonic game, the day snow mission is amazing WHEN IT WORKS.
I cannot stress how unresponsive the controls are in the daytime, honestly night controls are way more responsive. And the maps punish u for not realizing how unresopnsive the controls are. HOW MANY TIMES i died on rail sections cause I didn't click the jump left/right R/L buttons 2 seconds AHEAD OF TIME. Who the heck wants to play a sonic game where u have to hit jump 2 seconds ahead of time??!?!? I swear some of the '10-ring' and other items are setup to make u kill yourself, there is no way to get them without going off the cliff. Maybe u have to be going SUPERSPEED or CRAWLSPEED to manage it...idk....either gets u killed everywhere else on the stage by design though so screw that nonsense. AND OBVIOUSLY I REALIZE HOW TO BOOST DUHHHH. I knoww u have to boost in some areas so u dont die. I'm talking about the rail sections where u got like 3 rails to 'slowly animation jump between' and u had the 10 ring thing in the middle one and a giant cliff with less rail than anyone even at a crawl's space could do the animation in and there's no way a boost is gonna be the solution either, the game is trolling. I HATE THIS GAME. when I play a sonic game I know I am getting an easy game where I can just chill and have fun...this game is not that, every single thing kills u and u ahve to memorize to not die. adventure 2 is the best sonic game I've played and I honeslty have a ton of issues with it, and I actually hated it first time I played it it took a bit of love to love back. I played adventure 1 a few months ago and i honestly find myself going back to play the first stage again for no reason....it just focuses on being fun, something unleashed doesnt do. unleashed is focused on being the fastest sonic game....the best looking sonic game....everything else is completely secondary to those goals including the controls oh my god the controls.
I know it has been one year, but I don’t like the boosting levels. They’re too slippery. I know you’re using the mod for generations and it’s a lot better dude it deserves a remake. I guess needs to fix the boosting levels and. Werehog I have no problems with but this boost for sonic unleashed. OK I hope everybody don’t hates me because of that.
Unleashed received hate initially because it came after 06 and because many people did not want to try something new the werehog.
You call this a "werehog game" when that is sort of the point its the new gimmick of the game and its not the only Sonic game to do this. Riders: EX Gear Black Knight: Sword fighting, Colors: Wisps. Many games do this, and you are still playing as Sonic just with a more combat and puzzle-oriented gameplay style. Plus there are many key moments where you play as normal sonic, if this was a werehog game you would use him in the final battle but nope. You play as normal Sonic and Chip for the first half, and then Super Sonic for the final phase.
As someone who played the Arkham games which is famous for amazing combat and gameplay in general. It doesn't have much variety in enemies either just the same goons in different fonts and they get progressively harder. Unleashed does the same thing. Also this is a Sonic game they tend not to have a lot enemy variety. As for the combat it is actually fun and you don't have to do QTEs if you don't want to break up the flow of combat not everyone cares about racking up points. Also its the first combat game to have a lot of the same moves be copy and pasts Frontiers does the same thing, but at least in unleashed you don't have to worry about triggering the wrong move by pressing one button. I do agree there is not a lot of variety or challenge with the puzzles but this is not a puzzle game the puzzles in this are meant to be one and done get them over with and continue. As for the level variety I would say its good, just like sonic levels in general it takes the same basic concept and makes it fresh in a new way besides the layout. Its not filler content the werehog is just the gimmick of this game in particular.
Also you say the hub worlds control weird but imagine trying to run around them while boosting at top speed, they aren't meant for gameplay they are meant to make the world feel more alive and vibrant that's how hub worlds are in general. Its not meant to be something super cool an interesting, its just there if you enjoy that stuff. You can easily just run through each one in a straight line.
Many of the things that you dislike about this are more things you do not like or things that can easily be avoided. While yes you are entitled to your opinion many of these critiques are nit picks of a genuinely good sonic game.
One point I do agree on 100% is yes the medals are annoying, I did not mind them until I had to go back and collect more to unlock a stage.
So when this came out in 2008, I was like, a werehog, most stupid idea ever. A day ago, here now in 2023, I decided I finally give it a try on the PS3. After playing a handful of levels and saving parts of the world, I will boldly say, this is the WORST Sonic game I've ever played in my life. Its so absolutely frustrating. The controls and camera are just horrible. Was just playing the ice level where you have to run over the water. I kept going through the wall, or ground, or flying off to space. Its completely unplayable. The only part I've had fun with is just slowly collecting stuff out of the levels....which is not what you are suppose to really be doing in a Sonic game. The fast parts are SO fast they glitch or you die because something came up to fast, then the slow parts are just dreadfully slow. The grabbing onto ledges is SO bad, I fall half the time to my death, as the game just won't lock on. Why is this so terrible??? I will probably force myself to finish the game, but really, this is by far the first Sonic game, and really, any game I've played where I just don't really care to finish or not. I'm just really not enjoying my time playing it. Maybe playing Frontiers a few months ago spoiled me....I don't know.....

Why yes, I absolutely *love* Sonic in Skylanders.
When it comes to the Werehog's gameplay, I don't hate it but I don't love it either. It's playable, but honestly they go on a bit too long for me. My issue with the Werehog is that it literally only exists as an alternative to Sonic's friends. A cheap way to appease the "Sonic's stinky friends" crowd who have been whining practically ever since the debut of Tails.
Say what you will about Tails' mech shooting stages or Knuckles' treasure hunting stages, but they at the very least suited those character's personalities and abilities. Turning Sonic into a stretchy armed brawler who does wrestling moves simply doesn't! It's been said many times before that with a few tweaks the fighting mechanics of the Werehog could've been used for some fun Knuckles stages, "but we can't have Sonic's stupid friends, now can we?" God, I hate that attitude!

Love the game to death but i understand all these points. Playing for qtes is boring, puzzles kinda dull, my problem with the combat is probably that theres so many cool moves you can unlock but enemies dont stay alive long enough to pull off full combos lacking the flow as you pointed out even if you arent playing for score. i personally never had a problem with the medals once on my original playthrough as a kid or any time after, idk i guess i was just thorough. Drifting is ass if you dont take time to learn it and fair if you just want an automatic turn button but idk, i dont think its bad just not explained. one thing i do not understand...
How is it possible to hate the hub worlds and prefer the blank straight line generations??? To me thats a blatant downgrade, it looses all of the great hub music, all the cute npcs traveling around the world, all the different architecture from all around the world. and then the level hubs with fun little puzzles and secrets leading to more acts. To me the hubs are one of the greatest features but i guess if none of the npcs matter to you, none of the music matters, dont care about the locations or anything, you can just select stages from the world map..
I feel the hub worlds were more of an inconvenience than a plus for me at least, they're just boring to go through and do missions in, while gens made everything quick and easy on a new playthrough

Worst Sonic game I've experienced
I don’t like wherehog it’s just not fun for me I also don’t like the medal collecting in day stages night stages are fine since they’re slower. But the medals in general can take a hike

The Werehog ruins Unleashed base, but IMO Unleashed Project with a few more mods loaded in to make it look more like Unleashed turns this into an amazing experience. 9/10 or better for Unleashed Project IMO!

i agree i find this game mid replaying the day stages was fun the story was fine but the boring werehog exploring and collectables kills it for me atleast with crash of the titans it has fun platforming to not get you bored but with unleashed its just smashing and looking for collectables over and over again.

He S ranked most levels. So have I, I’m about to platinum it. Game is a mangled mess of horridly implemented mechanics and poorly developed physics.

@@e.ggamerguy5793 Get over it buddy, I’m playing the game right now, I have suffered through the countless glitches, silly bugs, slippery physics, random deaths… It is unpolished and it carries some of the problems the franchise had since pretty much it’s transition to 3D, making then even worse.
I know it’s a bitter pill to swallow but no, Unleashed is not an “underrated masterpiece that saved the franchise and cured my cat’s cancer”.
It’s a game that added many positive changes but implemented them so poorly and with such lack of care that ended up being a mess.

wuss always funny to me with not only these vids but players like this in general is dat they always, without fail, don't mention like the caveats to simply just button mashin 'n QTE spammin' thru the Night stages
like dawg, dat shiet takes forever & juss draws out everythang, no wonder yall complain bout dem nighttime levels bein too long or sumn.
yea you gon get the S Rank.....after doin' borin' ass gameplay on your part. less not pretend gettin dah S Rank with this dumb method dont come with its consequences on the practical gameplay now. shiets only good if you actually hurtin for points late in a level & want em quick, otherwise doin dat for a whole ass stage is overkill
some ACTUAL advice, 'n this is just based on what ive played 'n seen around:
- most of dah Night stages actually got a kinda bonus score for faster times goin on, wit like 6 of em havin big ones. from what i saw, only apotos night & spagonia night dont got a big time bonus. so yuh fast platforming & clever combat go a loooong way
- funny dat dude in the vid brought up QTE scores & combo scores, but then just glosses over dat for his point. anyway, some enemies are worth waaayyyyy more than others, so if you GONNA go for the QTEs then just go for higher point ones & spread out ya QTE sessions. check the points you get on like weaponed & shielded robot enemies for instance, and you'll see they got bigger QTE scores. same goes for dah stronger Gaia enemies too.
no need for doin QTEs one aftah another, juss fight smarter.
- and besides dat, yo combo points can actually go up to 1k points and even higher easily witha low Strength stat (iirc level 1 to 3) & those multiple hit combos, so takin advantage o' dat along wit enemy crowds is awesome af.
havin a high or max Strength stat does remove this chance tho & make you rely on QTEs more, so if anythang my beef wit dah combat system is just this stat.
tbh gettin rid of it can easily make combat be way cooler for combos, but either way juss keep yo Strength stat low
all-a dat combined can get yo ass the S Rank w/o doin dat QTE spam slogfest, that method in the vid just sounds like tryna take the easy way out w/o realizin' how much of a detriment dat shiet actually be.
"encourangin" aint what the game's doin', what you said is juss another option to an S Rank. the game dont care how you get dem points so long as you got enuff for dat S Rank, period
tbh its almost as if you tryna *not* have fun at all or you just didnt phucc wit the Werehog from the start, but thas nun o' mah business.
