I freaking love this channel. As a 31 year old in 2024 I can say I went almost my whole life not having anyone to discuss deep Beatles with and to now have TH-cam and channels like this are just a blessing
Brit here, a skip is a large steel open top bin - a bit like a giant bath tub. They are not mobile. They are hired for a period of time and transported by trucks and dropped off on site - typically used on building sites or for domestic uses if you are renovating/throwing a lot of stuff out. I’m sure you have the same thing in America, but obviously a different name for them!
A Skip in the UK is a large steel container with no Lid , around 8ft x 5ft , its unloaded at your property empty , you fill it up with trash and they collect it and re cycle the contents.
I play guitar, piano, bass, and mandolin! Please keep making these videos/podcasts. Gear, There, and Everywhere and Something About The Beatles are my absolute favorite podcasts and the only ones I listen to. The most thorough research/information and in depth Beatles knowledge you can access IMO
Just found you guys. A Beatles gear freak like you guys and love your videos ! Thanks for all the effort to put these together. Can’t wait to watch more !
I get kick out of guys like you doing your Beatles deep dive, it's good that younger people are still into the Beatles. I was 13 when I saw them LIVE and up close at Philly's JFK stadium on August 16, 1966 and was close enough to hear them very well. John & George sported their Epiphone Casinos, Paul had his Hofner and they were using their 100W Vox Super Beatle amps which were very loud. The screaming was mostly behind us thankfully so I could hear the vocals clearly through the crude stadium PA system but the instruments were loud and clear as a bell, They performed so well, that even though I was already playing guitar and in my first little band, I was observant watching everything ......some of their performances were so close to the record, it was like hearing a massive stereo system live although, of course there were differences. The most outstanding performances were "Nowhere Man", harmonies were spot on, "Day Tripper" and "Paperback Writer" which was their hit single at the time. Day Tripper and Paperback featured loud pulsing guitars and Pauls thundering bass. It's too bad you guys will never have the chance to see and hear what was the most famous 4 guys on earth at the time. Enjoy your studies😀
In response to the suggestion that the 12 string on I'm a Loser might have been borrowed from Peter Asher, per a forum posting in 2003 from a friend who played with Gordon Waller said Gordon told him Lennon used to borrow Gordon's J160E as he liked it better than his own. I would guess this is Lennon's own 1964 replacement as he did not seem to play it much. Shindig he is playing a single ring = Harrison's, Help single ring = Harrison's, and many mid studio photos until he had his own stripped down Harrisons = can tell by the moved PU. Gordon's J160E might actually be the J160E used by Lennon on several mid period songs and might be why Lennon "gifted" the Framus to Gordon as a thank you for borrowing his J160E often? (Not able to post the forum link as the post gets deleted. It can be found in a search)
Guys, John played an F9 on :"I'm A Loser", got it:-) Like "Hide Your Love Away" and "Hard Days Night", John loved to use the high G note as a high drone (or pedal tone) while playing G to Dsus to F9 or G to regular D Major to F9.
William Young make guitars in France. He contacted me several years ago As I told him I have a Framus Hootenanny. He asked me to send him detailed measurements and I did. Thats when he made his first Hootenanny. He's a great guy and we communicated for some time after that. I see he still has a website I think. He also mad some Rickenbacker copies. He's very precise.
I love how long these episodes are. Yes Paul, I play guitar. A lot. I like dobros a little more than 12 strings I think. Love it guys plz keep it up. ✌️ ❤ Beatles for sale is my favorite album. (Because it came out in my birthday 12/4) what you’re doing is like a perfect song. Why do people hate on Mr. Moonlight? Great Vocal. great cover. Intelligent song choice. Their record collection is so cool.
Another great episode, especially having Perry on with his Hootenanny. I am really looking forward to going to one of Jim Irsay's shows and seeing some of the Beatles instruments. One other very important piece of history is their former/present homes. While completely understandable, it is a real shame that homes like Kenwood have been completely renovated. It would have been a magical experience to visit it as it was during John's dwelling there. Imagine walking into the attic music room as it was during John's time there. I hope both Paul's Cavendish home and Friar Park are maintained they way they are and one day open to the public. There are a handful of spectacular videos of someone walking through Kenwood during the remodeling process (before it was transformed). Those videos a true treasures.
Julien's website says that there's been 5 bids, the largest for a million dollars. The auction is tomorrow, Wednesday the 29th of May from 10.00 EDT and it's lot number 50 out of 497. The instrument has been repaired by Ryan Schuermann of LA Guitar Repair.
I’m a drummer with my right leg amputated in 2019 trying to get back into playing drums again. I like the vibe on your show and I love the Beatles too! It kind of makes me want to hangout with some friends and play some music again. Do you guys jam together?
There were definitely 2 of them, you can actually see them both in the same photo on November 3rd, 1965! But yeah we’ll probably do a Sonic Blue Strat episode at some point
The Name Maton is a shortening of the founder of the MATON guitar company in Melbourne Australia his name was Bill May ... May tone shortened to Maton they had their cases made by The Siliato bros case manufacturers also in Melbourne!
"Ray Davies has done a lot of good songs" 😂 Quite an understatement! He's done WHOLE ALBUMS of great songs! Right up there with L & M, J & R, Pete Townshend with the greatest of the 60s and 70s Brit groups. Show respect, fellas!
Skip (not skif) is a kind of Dumpster. Skips in the UK when full are collected from the customer by special trucks and taken to the dump for recycling of the trash you have filled it with.
Technically the winning bid was $2.25 Million, and the buyer had to pay a 27% buyer’s premium on top of that (which is absurd) so I wasn’t sure if we should give it to you or Paul
@@GearThereEverywhere ME,ME,ME,LOL! We said what it would go for and that's what it would cost. Buyers knew the included fees when they got in so it went for the price closest to my guess! :)
The riff in "Girl" during the end IS a Bozouki, without a doubt:-) You have to figure in the effects of Abbey Road and Norman Smith's great engineering which made the Bozouki sound great, and can't be duplicated by some dude on TH-cam:-)
Holy smokes, I think it is a bouzouki! That sounds exactly right, I think that guy’s video sounds thin just because it’s recorded with a laptop microphone
i play guitar-and just enough keyboard, bass and drums to be dangerous. and my favorite album is Sgt. Pepper, like a lot of (most?) first generation fans.
Is it possible someone else who recorded at Abbey Road left a 12 string after a session that John used on 'I'm a Loser' which prompted him to buy the Framus?
I find it hard to believe that Capital specifically held tracks back from previous LPs just so a "Folk" style Rubber Soul could be banded together for the US market. Surely the $$$ related explanation is the more believable that often only 11 tracks were utilised out of the possible 14 on the US releases and throwing in some B-Sides and EP tracks Capital created 11 LPs (up to and including Revolver) for the US market yet in the UK it was only 7 LPs.
Yeah it also implies that Capitol knew what kind of songs would be on Rubber Soul when they released Help prior to Rubber Soul being recorded, and their track listing choices make less sense when you realize they took Act Naturally, the song where Ringo sings about being a movie star, off of the soundtrack album for the movie Ringo stars in. 🤷🏻♂️

Another fantastic episode! If the date on the Hootenanny is correct, I have a theory regarding “I’m a Loser”. It’s possible John may have borrowed Peter Asher’s Gibson 12 string. The albums “Beatles For Sale” and “In Touch With Peter and Gordon” were both released on December 4th 1964. There’s a chance they could have been recorded at EMI around the same time. Looking at the session photos from August 11th, just days before “I’m a Loser”, Peter Asher can be seen in the control room. Here’s Peter and Gordon playing the Gibson 12 string and a J160e on the Ed Sullivan Show: th-cam.com/video/UU-ov1HhjNc/w-d-xo.html “Two Little Love Birds” also has the 12 string and the intro sounds vaguely similar to “I’m a Loser”: th-cam.com/video/L_aH4feSw5o/w-d-xo.html
Just found an interview where Peter discusses the control room photo: th-cam.com/users/live-AW60SJ5QD4?si=Zv35kvJND58iSjKF&t=2468. He also confirms that they were recording nextdoor to The Beatles at EMI in August '64.
Great idea! Definitely could be, I had forgotten about that photo of Peter in the studio! Also, this was the period when Paul was living at the Asher’s house in London I think, so Peter can’t have been far away

Most memorable scene on HELP! For me, You're Gonna Lose That Girl. That epitomizes Beatlemania of 1965.
Gordon plays the same Framus on The Music Of Lennon And McCartney show which was video taped in November 1965.

Seeing the UL730 casually sitting in the background of Perry’s webcam is surreal. Kinda like if someone had the real Mona Lisa hung in their kitchen

Try the 12 string part at the end of Girl with the capo on 8.
I always though the instrument in Girl was George messing about on the sitar, but that bazouki sounds pretty close.

The mystery 12 string from the article that john is holding could be a stella harmony 12 string.

I believe this was the guitar John used in recording HELP! Not the J160e shown at the beginning of the move. The tone is quite distinctive

On the Bouzouki question..I tend to doubt it since its tuned different than a guitar…sounds like a Framus 12 to me.
I have a Hofner 12 string, and it’s strung up like yours with the octave string first.
How long until the prototype Gretsch George Harrison 12 string model resurfaces for auction?
