  • Today I’m taking a look at the famous Olympus OM-1, a completely mechanical SLR film camera from 1972. I recently picked this baby up and decided to test shoot it and show you guys some of the shots I took on it with some Kodak Portra 400 film negatives. I really enjoy this camera. It’s sturdy, comfortable and has great image quality. Definitely a keeper.

    The OM-1 cameras are a blast to shoot with, and the OM glass is super sharp. Depending on which battery you are using, and the condition of the light meter, you may want to over expose by a half stop (not always easy with these cameras) whenever you are shooting high contrast scenes.

      I love mine! Thanks for the tip too. I was dealing with a ton of under exposed photos and I was wondering what I was doing wrong bc my light meter showed that it was working. But I’ve been using an external light meter on my phone that works surprisingly well

    Personally I don't mind the darker shots. Very moody and smooth.
    I have 2 OM1s and and OM-G. The OM-G has an auto shutter speed with an in display read out. It's a killer camera for its price and even after using a friend's Leica I was happy to pick the Olympus back up. It's controls are superior and so is the viewfinder.

    I’ve been using OM’s since I was eighteen. The metering is centre weighted so the camera reads predominantly towards the middle of the frame. Next time try and point the camera at an area of mid tone (semi shadow) take a note of the reading then set the f number or shutter speed for that then re-compose and take the shot. This should increase the number of correct exposures.

    im new to shooting film, when hand held do you recommend using 1.8 aperture and around 30-60 shutter speed in bright environments? the aperture and 16 rule confuses me.

    • @PTRK490
      @PTRK490 หลายเดือนก่อน

      16= Very bright, no clouds, full sun.
      11&8= little overcast/sun with clouds/shadows
      5.6&4= overcast
      2.8&1.8= indoor/night photography
      Some even say put the shutterspeed as close as the ISO you're using. For example if you use 200 ISO, you set the shutterspeed at 1/250

    Just wonder: did you use a 1.35 V battery? If not this could be the reason why the light meter did not work accurately. I have an OM-2, and at the moment I think about buying an OM-1 because of its simplicity.

    • @tomislavmiletic_

    • @uniframesbuxtehude6952
      @uniframesbuxtehude6952 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you used a 1.5v battery, you have to adjust the Film speed two stops down (400-->100, 200-->50, 100-->25) thats what I just learned yesterday as I bought an om-1 on ebay 😉

    • @michaelh.gerloff3659
      @michaelh.gerloff3659 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unsbuxtehude6952 Interesting. The OM-1 was not adapted to 1.5V batteries, I guess?

    • @uniframesbuxtehude6952
      @uniframesbuxtehude6952 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The camera originally took 1.35v batteries. You can "teach" The light meter the 1.5v, but thats a task for a specialist😉 the easier way is to "overexpose". There are some adaptors with diodes in it. They compensate the excess voltage, but they are expensive aswell, so I would/will first try the ISO method

    • @michaelh.gerloff3659
      @michaelh.gerloff3659 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unsbuxtehude6952 I know about the original 1.35v, just wondered if this overexpose trick has to be done with adapted cameras, too. I still think about buying one from someone who offers them with 1.5v.

  • @rishirajgupta3524
    @rishirajgupta3524 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    you're probably getting a wrong exposure meter because you've put lr44 or some different 1.5v battery inside, which has more voltage than it should be (1.35v). its giving more power to the needle making it swing up than the actual light value. this same thing has happend with me, and after some research i found out about this problem.
    Soulution is to use Power One Hearing Aid P675 battery which is close to the actual mecury cell of the OM cameras

      Yes! I had to change the battery lol
