  • Operating my nearly-50 year old Olympus OM-1 35mm film SLR camera. These came out in 1972, and were a fully manual camera aimed at photography enthusiasts. This one is equipped with the standard 50mm f1.8 portrait lens. This is a basic overview of how to use the camera, and most of this would be relevant to using other manual film SLRs as well.
    Chapters:
    00:00 - Intro and a look at the camera
    02:00 - Check for film
    02:59 - Loading a new film
    06:50 - Shutter speed, aperture & focus rings
    08:05 - Taking a photo
    11:40 - Other parts of the camera
    12:20 - Let's take one more shot
    13:05 - Rewind and remove the film

    Never thought I'd hear a camera be compared to a train haha. The whole olympus OM series from back then really were terrific. One note, the original battery is supposed to be a mercury cell, with a nominal voltage of 1.35v compared to a alkaline cell with 1.5v. Also, the alkaline cell slopes its voltage down over its whole discharge cycle, where as, a mercury cell has a rather flat discharge curve, only dropping off when totally exhausted. these two factors combined results in out of whack exposures from the camera as they don't have any sort of voltage regulation. The best way around this is to use a PX625 to LR44 adapter in tandem with a zinc air cell.

    Literally just got an OM-1, wish my light meter worked, but this was super helpful!

    Same, this was the camera my family used in the 90s. I'm trying to put it back to use now, thank you for the video!

    Thank you so so much. Just have my OM1 from Ebay and I was so confused because this is my first time using a manual camera. I came across your video and it is super helpful 😁

    Brilliant video, thanks so much for this! With the risk of oversharing, the last convo I had with my Granddad before he passed was him showing me how to use this camera. I didn't retain much info, but the sentiment stayed and my dad gave me his old Olympus. I've hung onto it for years with the intent of getting into film, but the whole thing seemed a bit daunting - until now! It's my best friends wedding next week and I'm excited to give it a proper go for the first time using all of this info from you :) Thanks!!

    Hey! This vid was incredibly informative! Dusting off my dad's old camera and I had no clue where to start, so thanks for explaining things in such a cool way.

    Also on the film canister there's a silver and black strip called the DX code and more modern SLR's (later Nikon F series and the Canon EOS line) can read and sets the iso of the film and how many shots automatically and sometimes with film, you can get lucky by having a extra exposure

    My light meter detector is not working maybe coz of battery. But I cannot open where the battery is too. Any advice?

    • @Taitset
      @Taitset  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The battery hatch is designed to be opened with a coin - you insert it and rotate. A largish screw driver would also work. If the battery is really old it might have exploded in there a bit and caused it to get jammed shut.

      @@Taitset i am afraid it is jammed. If it is. It there any way I can still open it without breaking it? 😅😅

    • @Taitset
      @Taitset  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamseneres9202 It could be worth spraying a little bit of WD40 or something on it, and then trying with a bit more force? Or if there's a professional camera repair place near you it might be best to ask them to do it haha. If all else fails you can use the camera without the light meter. You could use a separate hand held light meter, or if you're really good at shooting manual - you can guess!

    My camera won’t let me wind it up! I know you said I need to take the photo but I press the photo button and nothing happens.

      It's possible the mechanism might have jammed, you might need to get someone to take a look at it.
