- The bite was on as waters finally began warming and the summer flounder (fluke) and striped bass pounced on my jigs. Looks like good fishing ahead!

The thing I like most about this video is the boat. It should be a reminder to everyone that you don’t need an elaborate setup of boat and gear to catch a ton of fish. Presentation practice and patience is what really catches fish.
Excellent !
My favorite John Skinner videos feature him fishing inshore from his aluminum boat. Just like this video.
New fluke and striper videos from John Skinner?! This is my favorite holiday!
Enjoy watching you fish the cold water!
It does seem like a good season ahead. Very pleasant to watch.
Another great vid. John. You got me interested in fluke fishing last winter while watching your videos. That spring I set my goal on catching my first fluke from my kayak in Delaware. It was a success. Unfortunately it was my one and only trip. This year I picked up a Quantum 2020 Accurist and two days later headed back to Delaware and landed three fluke, two keepers and one short, all of which I credit to you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Can't wait to get back out there.
Like that old boat has character for some reason I tend to watch these videos more end to end than your Florida kayak videos. Sometimes it’s really nice to fish alone like that you can experiment and no pressure to but others on fish.
Excellent trip John. Welcome back. Look forward to big action this year. See you in August.
I caught my first striped bass from the surf on Saturday! Caught it on your striped bass bucktail too!
love your boat, reminds me so much of my own!!
That prototype seems like a lean, mean parabolic machine!! Love the way it locks and loads toward the butt end.
Another great video. Happy Birthday John!
Wow the NE fishing season is off to a good start from the looks of it. Enjoyed the video, timr to break out my JS surf rod and head to RI.
This is going to be good !!!!!!
I have your book fishing the buck tail great video and book thanks
Why travel north to fish for Stripers and Fluke when I can go virtually with John and save on the air fare? Thanks John!
It’s great to see you back in New York John about time
Awesome fishing
Nice! Thank you!
Amazing fishing
One thing that is true for all fishing and I came by this realization slowly. I’m also sure John would agree is location is more important than almost anything. Learning where the fish are, when and why is a huge part of success. I have learned spots through trial and error and good electronics that almost always produce. Some of these spots you could use a 1970s zebco spincast rod and reel and just about any lure and you would catch fish. It doesn’t take a lot of skill once you learn those lessons. Understanding tides, wind and bottom make up of the areas you fish will get you 90 % of the way to success. Variables like depth, retrieve speed and bait are important but not nearly as much as knowing where the fish are. Fish are not that smart, especially schooling fish. Find them, remember where you found them in the past and you will catch them.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video Thanks for sharing John. Would you please send a few of those fluke up to kettle bottom please.
Great action & my favorite fish to eat
With your videos becoming more popular I see your fans want to fish near you! That's cool, they keep there distance. Unlike those rude bait guys in Florida!
Excellent Content again John. Really love how you set up your video. Good thing State Police not looking for you. You definitely don't have any fingerprints on your thumbs. And the line cuts in your hands probably dont feel good either. Like I said last week. Taking the 2 Nephews Jacob and Joseph and my Youngest Son Denny to Fenwick Island Thursday to Clam and Surf Catching. Will let you know how we make out. Tight lines my friend.
Awesome Vid, Like Always🤙🏼
Nice day for that 💪👍🏻
I use your technique and caught my biggest fluke thanks Skinner and this is Pedro from KEPTI FISHING
I can't tell you how many fluke I've hooked that were 20+ and by the time I got them to the boat they were a half inch short. I thought there was a problem with the fish in Nj. lol
Is that up around Block Island? Coast Guard still uses Block Island Sound as its Nav Chart section for Captain's exams.
Great vid. Took my dark matter skinner combo from J&H out yesterday for the first time and first fish on it was a keeper fluke. Tough conditions no drift power drifting all day. Hope a good sign of things to come tho. Tight lines 🎣
Nice Skinner!
Nice catch strippers are back I just caught. A 41” stripper
How do you cook your flounder?
Those stripers are very uniform sized . Many were probably in slot !!
Caught more stripers then I caught in 5 years
Hi John weather looks a little bit nasty
Almost 500 views in 24 minutes. I’m am but a shadow in the Skinner sunshine! Haha!! My idol for many reasons!
John- great video. On the striper bucktailing how far up current are you casting? why not just vertical bucktail with a 3-way, like in one of your older videos. when do you employ each method?
Are you fishing Dering Harbob?
I'm coming back to Moriches on Thursday to spread my brothers ashes in th east cut. It looks like the fishing should be hot by the weekend
Sorry for your loss.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks. I'm sure the dang sea Robin's ate him up.
Hey John what's your opinion on the rubber swim shads?
I am new to striper fishing. Been trying bucktails and poppers. No luck yet but I did hook into something on a bunker colored swim shad. Maybe a schoolie
Awesome for bass and weakfish.
Any word on when the new rod is going to be available? Really like what has been coming out of Dark Matter...caught everything from Stripers, to Giant Blue Catfish, and Musky on them.
August on this one.
Love the videos and i know you like to bucktail I was wondering if u have given the nomad vertrex vibe which you work similar to a bucktail but gives a more realistic presentation
Strangest thing, I do everything exactly like Skinner tells me to and I don't catch 1/10 of the fish he does. Is Skinner human, what the hell is this guy?!?
You have to also be in a spot where there is fish. That is half the battle.
What if you stuck on shore love your videos would like to see some fishing from the shore or docks. I mainly fish Mt.Sinai harbor but never seem to hit it right
He's the "fluke whisperer".
@@NYandAtlantic hit on outgoing tide this time of the year good luck
@@jdmmarcelo10 how do you know this is best
Hi John what are you using for a casting leader thanks
50# Fluoro
Quick question Mr. Skinner... What factors determine whether you want to use fixed hook versus swing hook jigs? Structure over which you're fishing, current, target species, other considerations?
There is one time I really want a swing hook, and that's when using fluke jigs heavier than 2 ounces. Otherwise they've been interchangeable for me lately.
Sorry for my ignorance I see you’re casting the bucktail for the striper and jigging I guess you call it, I see you said that you’re not holding bottom are you slowly reeling as you are jigging the bucktail or allowing to slowly sink back down into the same location almost?
Just swim or jig the bucktail a foot or two off the bottom and you should hook up.
Thanks John! Really enjoy your videos and the dark matter poles from j and h.
Your bucktailing technique for stripers looks a lot more enjoyable than trolling! What is the range of good drift speeds? What kind of bottom were you over? Although bucktails are relatively snag-resistant, does your technique work if there are a lot of boulders and growth? I've seen you employ the vertical snap jigging technique before, but here (except with the new rod) it looks like you cast upstream first - not vertical at all.
By the way, your videos resulted my personal best 7.5 lb fluke last week (Huntington area). Thank you!
Great on the fluke! These bass were mostly in 15 feet, so I prefer to cast to those. Boulders are zero issue, and I often bucktail around them. Just swim it off the bottom a foot or two. Don't drag or bounce on the bottom.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks! I realized after I posted that the answers to my questions are probably in your book "Fishing The Bucktail". It will make a nice Father's Day present.
How come you don’t say exactly where u are fishing unfortunately for me I don’t own a boat or kayak always enjoy your videos from start to finish. It is nice that you let everyone know exactly what you are using very in site ful
Great video Skinner. How do you feel about the swing hook vs the fixed hook? I've tried the swing hook but missed a decent amount of fish. I was wondering maybe I was missing when the BT was going down and my "fast" rod yanked the BT too fast and the hook had to catch up? Great work, lookin forward to seeing more JJ and Skinner videos!
PS- when are we going to get the 2 North East Legends together? Crazy Al and John Skinner?!
Nothing wrong with a swing hook, and the fish have a harder time shaking it off.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ill have to give them another shot. I have a few jig balls like that and 2 if the s&s bucktails. 1 of them had a hook that was backwards on it. Maybe the one I installed was wrong! Appreciate the response as always!
Hi John, Love the videos... Watching you jig fluke with your right hand and then having to switch hands to reel the conventional baitcaster... Have you considered a left hand crank baitcaster/conventional reel? Is there a specific reason if you don't?
Hey skinner! I was wondering if you pinch your barbs? I have been doing it for about a year now and It makes the release so much quicker. It also does less damage to the fish if the goal is to release them. Just wondering what your thoughts are on barbless/pinched hooks?
He talks about it quite a bit in alot of his other videos. I do believe he does so on his plugs
I pinch, but not on fluke jigs.
John following you long time , former long islander ,now live in NC you think that test rod you were using for fluke would be a good rod for flounder down here ?
It's intended as a light summer flounder (fluke) rod. I'll be using it for shallow bay fishing in the 1/2- to 1 1/2-ounce range.
John I wondered if you thought it was a disadvantage to get a Shield II I’m 7’6” as opposed to 7’ you use? Also would a 3000 Evict be better for all around or does the 2000 handle anything for bay strippers and fluke here in RI for my son & I . Thanks for sharing all you do. Makes us have a chance to catch something.
The 7'6'' is great too, as is the 3000 evict.
What rods and reels are you using thanks
There are links in the video description.
Hey John, do you not like he way the stripers taste? Also I killed Fluke last summer down here in Maryland using Joh. SKINNER SS buck tails
I'd rather eat fluke. Glad the bucktails worked for you!
Hey John, what kind of boat do you have? Looks very stable and roomy
1974 16-ft starcraft
Awesome! What boat is that? Looks great!!
1974 16' starcraft
not a question about the video but I assume you use a lithium battery, seeing that your pleased with its performance and endurance just what brand are you using if you don't mind. The prices seem to vary widely.
Amped Outdoors 100 ah.
Why do you jig for stripers with a spinning reel but jig for fluke with a baitcaster reel?
Hi. What size reel are you using for stripers in this video?
2000
Do you ever fish for fluke from shore?
He does .
Also, are you doing any retrieve or is straight vertical jigging for fluke?
What brand boat is that? I like it. Seems rugged and durable. Love the vids nice fish!
1974 16' starcraft
I was subscribed but like most saltwater fisherman the links are not what you use in the videos.
The gear links are definitely there. The bucktails, rods, reels, line - everything.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing , all I could find was the funky pink Slam Shady and a link to a green paddle tail swimbait. There was nothing else in the description.
@@johnd4408 Strange. I just checked with 2 different browsers, logged in and not logged in. All links there.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing , I checked again and now there is a list of links of the stuff you used. Before, there were only those two I mentioned.
What’s the point if you don’t say where you’re fishing?
Off Long Island
@@dpar9891 Long Island is a big place. Not helpful.
Stop being a baby🤣
Why should he do all the work finding them for you? Figure it out yourself. He gave a general area which is more than what others would offer
