I'm really enjoying this new camera angle. The wider perspective shows us retrieve techniques and also gives a clearer sense of the surrounding conditions. Thanks.
Totally on board with everyone’s personal preference for left vs right hand retrieve. I do the same as you for the most part. Run the rod with my right. Grip up with the left to set the hook. Only I do not switch rod hands after that. I continue holding with my right and reeling with the left. That rod hand switch is what makes it awkward for me. Thanks for the great video as always, John. Keep em coming.
Great trip John! Looks like the bay is really producing some nice fish (of ALL species) this season. I really like the change you made with the go pro off the stern for the overall look. Its a great teaching aid for observing both hook sets and jigging action as well as retrieving technique. Very well articulated. Now if you only had Doc on board..............
Hi, mine too. Did you know that Graham Pullen was a world champion freshwater angler back when I was a boy, maybe 50 odd years ago? Two real gentlemen of the art.
Back before chart plotters you needed two empty milk jugs and a low tide pass to work the edge. Also, we used fluke strips with spearing for the door knockers.
My Godmother and uncle have a house on Angler Rd., by that beach/park. Every time you start your video at that ramp, I'm reminded of their neighborhood and think it's a darn shame you don't live on their street. 🤣
Hey John, love when you give the details - always interested in how deep of water your fishing, how strong a current and how many ounces your bucktail is
i love your no b.s. scientific style and your videos, thank you. you are a fine human. also, new stern camera is great. i'd like to see you make a fluke trip without gulp, using only natural baits like killies, spearing, small bunker, and squid. or maybe you can do it with a passenger to show results with and without gulp, side by side on the same trip, for direct comparison. as you have pointed out, gulp can cost a small fortune.
Ive been fishing from land on south shore bay and been getting some really good fluke this year. Im very surprised at how big they are. Biggest is 22 inches so far.
Wife and I had great day Shinecock skinny water...wife; 26 inch 5 lb fluke, 23 inch fluke and , me 2 slot stripers 29, 30", JS bucktail. Dark matter rods, 15 lb braid, vs50, and accurist...No robins..gonna be good year!
Hey john.. Thanks for the videos..Do you know of any ramps one can use that are not a resident of the East end.. Any of the marinas?? I'm in brookhaven and would like to come out that way.
I was a child last time I fished up north. I remember catching "Fluke" and "Flounder" - but I'm wondering now if those toothless Flounder were really sole?
Just curious John, when you say your working an edge are you concentrating on the very top of the edge where the depth just starts to drop off or somewhere near the middle of the drop off
Is Gulp toxic? What happens when the tail of a gulp gets bit off , if the fish swallow it , would the fish die or something. does anyone know. My kids asked and I didn’t know lol
I've used Penn 155's to cast with as well as the ABU Garcia 7000 all of which are right handed since I started fishing 58 years ago. And many left hand retrieve spinning reels as well - vast majority of my gear. I've since moved to Northwest and was on a steelhead drift boat where the guide had all left hand wind casting reels for use. I've always wanted to try one as using left hand spinning equipment is my normal method. All that said it was pretty easy to get used to the left hand retrieve on that casting reel that day. I asked why he only used left handed reels. He said many customers are used to spinning tackle being left handed and would turn the right handed casting reels upside down to retrieve and wind backwards! I have since purchased two of my own left handed casting reels. What I've learned from that is: 1 my muscle memory is more used to the larger diameter of the spinning reel handle so I find myself trying to make a bigger circle with the casting reel handle than is needed. 2 I should have purchased rods with longer butt sections so I can more easily rest the rod butt under my right fore arm or in my stomach for a bit more leverage. This is to compensate for not gripping in front of the reel seat to set the hook. 3 My left hand is very experienced at performing level wind duties and teaching my right hand would be my steepest learning curve. On that note the vast majority of casting reels on the market now are level wind so that should not be an issue. So the right hand would be mainly to keep tension when winding the line. Would I buy another left handed casting reel? Yes, but I dont need any more tackle by a long stretch. I fully understand personal preference and did not share this dissertation to change someones mind. Simply to try to explain to someone thinking about it what hindsight I have gained. Thanks for taking the time to read this, Tight lines. I hope all this makes sense.
As a new small powered boat owner for the sound, I would be interested in the most effective way to use a chart plotter and fish finder (tutorial). Thank you!
Maybe you could improve your location audio. I find myself muting your stream and wish I didn't. Other youtube fishermen get better results - everybody fishes in the wind. There are some pretty decent pop shields/wind socks available these days.
Thank you so much skinner. I’ve learned so much from you. Having a great fluke dinner tonight thanks to you.

A good video, just fishing & catching.

For righties..
Baitcaster- Handle on right
Spinner- Handle on left
Same w the big ones in NC at times. Like reeling in a stick.
Enjoy the new camera position off the stern, nice video John
This man deserves 250K subscribers for this awesome content.
Nice work, they are thicker than the past two years around this time. I'm liking it so far, I see you are as well 👍🏼👍🏼

I was shocked when I saw how nice that back camera view is.
There’d be no fish left in the Bay of those two got together :)
The books are awesome John ! Thank you 🎣
Thanks for sharing that!
Great fishing, John! Again 🙂
Hey John, great video. And my first trip this year i had a few Fluke as well that just did not feel like anything but dead weight, no fight at all
You always make it look easy Mr. Skinner! Nice work and good luck this season. Just ordered your book - JT
Hi JT! Maybe I'll see you in that north side place this summer. The "new" boat can reach that.
@John Skinner Fishing Looking forward to it. I'll text you my new number so you have it. Can't wait to see the new boat.
You and TA fishing are my zen masters!

Yes! I carried those marker buoys back in those days!
Love the book. Lots of great information.
Thanks for sharing that and your support!

I notice the nice name of that road when I drive by!
Just bought your fishing the edge , can’t wait to read it!
Thanks for your support. Enjoy the read!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks for the content!
Definitely a great day 👏

Thanks for the kind words. The live bait comparisons were done to exhaustion 5- to 10 years ago. No way I'm using natural bait again.
Go get em, Mr Skinner.
Beautiful thing
Great video again... What will you be doing for bucktails with the closure of S&S?...
Ive been fishing from land on south shore bay and been getting some really good fluke this year. Im very surprised at how big they are. Biggest is 22 inches so far.
Any chance this is near Shelter Island New York? Looks like the ferry.
Love your videos ! Woupd love to come out with you to learn from the best
good trip quality fluke - can you please advise manufacture fishing net - i big fan of the square front of the net

Awesome!

There's a NYS ramp in Southold.
I'm buying the book also maybe I can get it signed by the legendary John skinner...that alone is worth the drive
John, at 2:45 of the video are you scoping or is the line up and down based on you using the rear camera to record?
There's a little scope but not much. I think the camera angle is adding to it.
I bet you could trade a day of fishing for a seat cushion replacement.
Just today I took pictures and measurements to send to the manufactuerer
I was a child last time I fished up north.
I remember catching "Fluke" and "Flounder" - but I'm wondering now if those toothless Flounder were really sole?
They were summer flounder (fluke) and winter flounder (flounder). We lost the winter flounder around 35 years ago.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing wow, I'm sorry to hear that.
Would still eat the gulp with the tails ripped ?? Or are they focusing more of the action when jigging ?
It's a good question. I change them if torn because motion is so important to fluke.
What depth are you fishing in? I never caught a weak fish. I fish the navasink and shrewsberry rivers
50 feet
Which bay is this ?
Just curious John, when you say your working an edge are you concentrating on the very top of the edge where the depth just starts to drop off or somewhere near the middle of the drop off
I'm on the slope.
So where you fishing out in the Hamptons shinnecock give us a hint where you please
This was North Fork.
They all have just been sitting on the hook. No hit nothing just weight on the lift
Have you tried the Salt Strong from Florida on fluke.
Not yet.
Their small paddle tails work well dipped in gulp. Still gulp works too well to justify experimenting.
May I ask which tide you prefer there or does it not matter ! Thanks.
I'm honestly not sure which is best, but I'm leaning toward flood.
ever fish brooklyn ? any good there
No. It's very far.
Are you fishing the incoming or outcoming tide?
A little of both the last couple trips.
John when are you doing a book signing?
I did three in the winter - NJ, NY, RI.
do you think the reason why things pick up is because the water temp ? what depth are you fishing in ?
40-70 feet.
I know this is off subject. But did you get your house in Florida fixed?
New roof, new insulation underneath, new skirting... All fixed.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing That's wonderful, Hope your insurance payed for that.
Does anyone know what kind of boat that is???
1986 Grumman 5.0 Meter CC.
Is Gulp toxic? What happens when the tail of a gulp gets bit off , if the fish swallow it , would the fish die or something. does anyone know. My kids asked and I didn’t know lol
It's been tested. They poop it out. It's biodegradable.
Just like corn

Thanks for the explanation!
All the fluke I catch have completely empty stomachs. Maybe it’s because they spit everything up.
Where you going for looking on at South shore nobody ever tells us he's thanks
You always catch the biggest fish after your limit.
Left hand all day. I want to fight fish with my stronger hand. Weaker hand just turning the handle. That makes more sense to me.
Can I go fishing with you skinner
