    Fabulous,the most refreshing thing to here is you saying it's your model railway and what you want goes . You my dear boy are worth your weight in gold to thousands of modellers especially the young, I take my hat off to you, we can only but learn for Escher .

      Just tell your employer hat you have to have more time for your hobby so you can keep up with your You Tube people and he might just give you the time. Although no job would put a crimp on the money needed to buy things. haha!!!!

    Thanks for the update, Richard. I always enjoy your videos. Bully for you for having a life outside of of TH-cam!! You owe no one an explanation for how you're building your layout or posting your videos. We're grateful you choose to share your skill and experience with us.

    Great to see your progress. It is really refreshing to hear someone on TH-cam say this is not my job. Enjoy what you are doing, I enjoy and appreciate the time and effort you are putting into your hobby, it is easy to forget how much extra effort videoing what you are doing adds to your work load. Looking forward to the next update.

    I'm rebuilding my layout and remember a piece of advice given to me. It's your layout so you lay it out how you want it. I'm sure that it's going to look good. Like you I'm taking my time.

    Hi Richard, greetings from Australia. Your videos inspired me to get into the hobby when I retired. Really enjoy hearing about your thinking as you went around the layout. May I encourage you just to make videos when it's right for you , don't feel the need to defend your decisions there is absolutely no need. Looking forward to your next video whenever that may be. Cheers David

    If you just like to watch your trains run then I'd say the trackplan you have in mind is perfect!! Lots of room for broad sweeping curves and scenery...no need to clutter it up with sidings you don't need!!

  • @anthonymizen9095
    @anthonymizen9095 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Absolutely agree with keeping the track plan simple and not making it look too cluttered. If you want to be running 8 or 9 coach trains in a realistic setting that is the way to go. I also think it’s good that nearly all the track is on one level which will avoid any headaches of some locos not being able to fully make it up. Looking forward to seeing how it develops

    Hi Richard, this video is inspirational as usual. I think the way you're putting the layout together is an excellent idea. I've made the mistake on mine of putting in quite a large yard area which I don't really shunt around and as a consequence I've limited my room for buildings and scenery. If anyone criticises how you're building your layout then ignore them - it's none of their business as it's your layout and for your enjoyment. I for one am looking forward to seeing this one take shape as it's already looking brilliant. Cheers, Mike.

    So nice to see your return and process so far Richard.Mixing work on a customer vehicle (cortiner mk 3 fast back if i am correct,if so not many were produced).Its like having 4 pair of hands in some ways,but there only 24 hours in one day.But a income to the household is far more important.Wonderful to see the process that you have made so far and design of the layout.Wonderful woodwork to the under the upper section with the ply and cutting of the curve sections. So far the layout is looking great.I am sure that BRM/HORNBY/RAILWAY MODELLER will be following your progress,with great interest,i am sure.Your so correct that there isn't many lines are true straights within the British Railway network.Just gained planning permission to remove my old shed 10'x 8" to 20"x 16",that took 9 months to gain alone.Hence i will gain a few helping hands to erect it and lining it all out with insulation panels and panels in ply every part,then the electrics.With the under standing its within the correct height 7' which is the max i can do or allowed to do.Plus it must not be fixed to the ground,with cement,so its at least on the iron spikes,3"x 3"or 4"x 4"up right posts that one use's for fencing with a firm base,even that will be infilled with insulation panels,to prevent rising dampness,marine ply flooring.Building regulations are so strict and so much red tape to comply within my location'its so untrue.Like yourself it takes a considerable amount amount of time removing everything.Packing it all away for safety.Shed is down.ground work will start once the weather improves.So i'll be very busy for a good 6 months sorting that out alone.I must thank you on so many tips that you have shown in your last layout,so easy to follow,Which i must admit i did use a few like coach lighting to name only one.I do follow Dean Park Station and Jenny Kirk as well.Well that's enough of that.I wish you all the very best upon your process.I have even downloaded onto CD disc's of your old layout so i can go back onto any section as a form of reference library.So i have now start making anew set upon your new layout.I think the first track to be placed down will be around 9/10 months time,after basic layout,woodwork is completed.Like yourself work does take up one's time most of the time.But i have been very busy doing all my coach and racks with lighting.buffer end,fish plates wired as its the winter months.Once again i wish you all the success and process and loads of patients is required,I should know many a mistakes by rushing,then rip it up again. ....CAROL ps sorry to be so long in the tooth going on.O'h i do Southern era 3/4/5 plus one section of the layout will be of the 38 stock London Underground of the late 50's and early 60's Morden Station.

    It is coming along real well. One great thing about it is the understanding of distance. Usually the trains overpower its surroundings and towns and stuff like that becomes overcrowded and streets becomes more in size of alleys, while they are supposed to be able support heavy traffic. I guess as you are to have suburbs and out of town is to include some industries, maybe one or two to keep the urge of suddenly want to so some switching a bay.

    hi Richard I've been following your work for over a year or two. I've started a layout in the attic loosely based on your old set up. I've had all sorts of issues, some similar to your own. I'm pleased your starting from scratch as l have made the decision to scrap my loft layout in favour of a log cabin. it goes without saying that my new layout will be made following your example. I hope I can make it work as my dimensions will be 15x12. I already use code 75 track, you will run into issues over the points if you continue to use Kadee couplings. The curved bar that drops down is too long and has to be cut. I couldn't bend it.Take as long as it takes, I haven't even started the log cabin yet lol. remember it's a hobby not a job. Jim

    taking your time is a must like me iam still designing my model in my head now for two years as iam trying to replicate rugby industrials lines in the 1950 as i found the real track plan of that time there are absolutely loads of turnouts points were the engine sheds were and iam doing it n N gauge in my loft as 00 would not look right as you say scale is everything so will finally be starting this summer 2019 as the loft is being emptied and i will finally be able to use it yipeeeee .

  • @2KXMKR
    @2KXMKR 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm really looking forward to seeing this progress, whenever it may be. The wait is worth it. You seem to be taking the same approach as I am with my N scale layout, trains running through the countryside and not cramming in a load of the 'typical' model railway features. The HST's are going to look awesome tearing around that open space.
    My layout is inspired by the West Highland Line and will have only a single bi-directional line running around the loft and a station with a branch line to add interest. Of course, a 12 road fiddle yard!

    Hi, thanks for this new video. There are certainly different "schools of thought" with regards to operations on model railways. Some prefer shunting, others - like you - like watching your trains run. Everything has its merit and you have to like, not the "community" on TH-cam or wherever. You should be sure however, whether "just" running trains will be satisfying for you in the long run. I do not know, how things are in GB, but surely sometimes locos get replaced on trains or industries need to be serviced by a siding. It wouldn't need to be a large yard or depot or whatever, just e.g. one or two sidings, just to add interest and additional operating possibilities. This just as a suggestion to avoid boredom on the layout down the road from my own experience.
    At the end of the day, it is however your layout! Have fun building it. :)

  • @rttx
    @rttx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the update! I really appreciate your attention to detail, especially your plans for the track. The biggest thing that bothered me about your old layout was the rail size. You made the track look excellent with your weathering and detailing, but in the end, it was still code 100 track and always looked just a bit too big. Using code 75 will make all the difference in the world. I personally wouldn't worry about the spacing with the concrete sleepers, but I look forward to seeing your efforts with the re-spacing. I have tried re-spacing sleepers before, it's really honestly more trouble than it's worth. I look forward to seeing the mix of bullhead and flat bottom rail on your layout, especially in your big station. Given your era, I think you should have the mainline platforms have the flat bottom rail, and the secondary platforms have bullhead rail. Best of luck to you. Enjoy the hobby. Cheers.

    Great to see an update on your progress. I can completely sympathize with the "real life" invading on the Railroad time. :) I really enjoyed your honesty about the choices you made in the track plan and how you are tailoring it to what you like to do with your railroad. Too many people are "unhappy" with their layouts in time because they haven't really thought about what they like to do with it; ie; Run trains around, Switching (Shunting I believe you call it), etc. Looking forward to the future updates.

    Looks great Richard. One thing though. Concrete sleepers have a much closer spacing than timber bullhead. 28 or 30 sleepers per 60ft compared to 24 per 60ft for bullhead. So you might not need to re-space the concrete sleepers after all.

Just one point you might already know (or wish to consider anyway), as far as I can remember around the late 70's / early 80's the majority of point work was still on wooden sleepers, even when concrete was used on the plain line. Just a thought if you haven't bought any points as yet as you might want to replicate that look. Keep up the good work Richard, the layout is really coming on a treat.

      I'll be using wood sleeper points as even today you can find them still in use. Only in the 2000s did concrete points start making an appearance.

    I think the idea of less is more is going to work out well The trains will appear to run further going out into the country than passing lots of sidings and industry. Also I was going to mention about the track but see Hugh Wark has already done so. The 1 in 50 is pretty steep but a 1 in 45 on a very sharp check railed curve branch in my area frequently saw not only DMU's but loco hauled 12 coach trains as well

    Like the change to code 75 much more real and cant wait to see the branch sweep under the main line .

    quick note on your sleeper spacing there are differing numbers of sleepers per rail type and sleeper type. Even between type of concrete sleeper so might be worth checking the sleepers per 60ft for each type

      @EverardJunction  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      24 to 28 sleepers per 60ft length in real life. I'm aiming for roughly that, one or more less in 00 isn't noticable. I've done a few lengths now and its surprising how much better the track looks for it.

      Given one of your other comments about 'getting sick of working with wood'... I expect you'll be sick of cutting and spacing sleepers too.

      I did the same & found the end result well worth the extra effort. A lot of things in this hobby require patience to bring a better result.

      The rails need to be the correct spacing so that the railway workers can do the railway worker shuffle. :)))
      How do you identify a railway worker? He walks with 60 cm steps.

    I've just been soldering some lights for my layout, but just as i rubbished I realised that the wires were going through the roll of solder and when I tried to take in out the switch was a millimetre to big! So frustrating! I then had to unsolder a load of stuff to take it out but hopefully this video will make me less stressy

    The spider at 18:10 is a false widow. The bite causes a painful rash that lasts for two days or so. Keeping them out of your loft might be a hopeless endeavour, but its probably still a good idea to take it outside.

      Spiders are a rare sight up there but thanks for pointing it out. I'll remove them in future. Cheers

    I like the new Peco bullhead track and the new points look great. I'd love to see it used on the branch.

    Good to see this update Richard, as they say less is more, some how I found the circular N-gauge layout I had was left running with a couple of locos more than the branch and depot! I'am building a new layout in OO called Black Robin (pub near Canterbury, Kent) even through it's loosely based on MR S&C line two circular lines with a branch leading down to a storage area. The later reason why most layouts end-up with too many sidings per mile per foot. do like the the idea of disused station (converted to house on the branch, plus many goods shed are used foe industrial use. look forward to the next update. When are you going to do one on the car as well? both of which I enjoy watching your skills.

    Hi Richard,
    I have gone down the same route of not having alot of sidings and such and keeping my curves very generous, It's amazing how much space you actually "loose" having large radius curves compared to say 3rd and 4th radius and the rest straight. I actually went down the scratch building track route which I have just started, I didn't make the gauge any larger though as I like not having to mess about with rtr stock, I have however made it a tad narrower to improve running, well that's the hope anyway.
    Cheers, Michael

      I like your expressing the thought process as it guides design and construction. The emphasis on scenery/rail balance makes the layout. Keep on keeping on. --AY

    i think we all sit here waiting to see your updates; but like you said its a hobby at the end of the day; personally i am clad it is because then i can take it all in, just in case i want at a later date to alter mine Terrapin station. like the incline and how you explained it; i cant go down with mine, but i can go up so to speak.. keep up the good work, and the car is looking a treat as well..

    It's great to see some track down Richard :). Some great ideas and I especially like the idea regarding the banked track. I am in the process of playing with track and had been thinking the same thing. I put a temporary loop of track down to run in a couple of loco's and one bend was slightly banked (not intentionally). The DMU looked so much more lifelike around this bend so I am thinking of doing the same and I am looking forward to seeing how you achieved it. If nothing else, it should help with derailments a little I hope. I look forward to the next update, whenever you find the time. Life does have a habit of getting in the way!

    Looking good Richard, progressing nicely. Enjoying your updates (too right in your own time) when you post them, been watching your channel for quite a few years now, keep up the excellent and creative work chap. I prefer the open frame approach too, interestingly I referenced Brian Lamberts guide on this (The Newcomer’s Guide to Model Railways) and the American ‘L’ Girder technique refers to the supporting frame structure which is supposed to make it stronger whilst using less wood and the ‘T’ structures supporting the track bed are referred to as Risers regardless of shape. Happy building.
