  • Not had much time this year to work on the layout so far. I have however completed the deck for the track on the scenic section.
    I've just started to lay the track so the next video will focus on track work. After that I should be able to run a train for the first time!
    Link to my restoration project if you're interested....

    Enjoy...

    Thanks for the update, Richard. I always enjoy your videos. Bully for you for having a life outside of of TH-cam!! You owe no one an explanation for how you're building your layout or posting your videos. We're grateful you choose to share your skill and experience with us.

    Hi Richard, greetings from Australia. Your videos inspired me to get into the hobby when I retired. Really enjoy hearing about your thinking as you went around the layout. May I encourage you just to make videos when it's right for you , don't feel the need to defend your decisions there is absolutely no need. Looking forward to your next video whenever that may be. Cheers David

    Fabulous,the most refreshing thing to here is you saying it's your model railway and what you want goes . You my dear boy are worth your weight in gold to thousands of modellers especially the young, I take my hat off to you, we can only but learn for Escher .

    Everything coming along nicely, thanks for the tip on calculating the gradient. I'm trying to keep my layout as simple as possible, no complicated point work just plenty trains running through scenery. great video. Cheers John.

    Very interesting to hear your design philosophy aided by your weighing up the operational pros and cons of the previous layout, the premise of 'less is more' can yield a much better layout. Sounds and looks extremely promising, look forward to seeing how this develops, Jim.

    hi Richard I've been following your work for over a year or two. I've started a layout in the attic loosely based on your old set up. I've had all sorts of issues, some similar to your own. I'm pleased your starting from scratch as l have made the decision to scrap my loft layout in favour of a log cabin. it goes without saying that my new layout will be made following your example. I hope I can make it work as my dimensions will be 15x12. I already use code 75 track, you will run into issues over the points if you continue to use Kadee couplings. The curved bar that drops down is too long and has to be cut. I couldn't bend it.Take as long as it takes, I haven't even started the log cabin yet lol. remember it's a hobby not a job. Jim

    So nice to see your return and process so far Richard.Mixing work on a customer vehicle (cortiner mk 3 fast back if i am correct,if so not many were produced).Its like having 4 pair of hands in some ways,but there only 24 hours in one day.But a income to the household is far more important.Wonderful to see the process that you have made so far and design of the layout.Wonderful woodwork to the under the upper section with the ply and cutting of the curve sections. So far the layout is looking great.I am sure that BRM/HORNBY/RAILWAY MODELLER will be following your progress,with great interest,i am sure.Your so correct that there isn't many lines are true straights within the British Railway network.Just gained planning permission to remove my old shed 10'x 8" to 20"x 16",that took 9 months to gain alone.Hence i will gain a few helping hands to erect it and lining it all out with insulation panels and panels in ply every part,then the electrics.With the under standing its within the correct height 7' which is the max i can do or allowed to do.Plus it must not be fixed to the ground,with cement,so its at least on the iron spikes,3"x 3"or 4"x 4"up right posts that one use's for fencing with a firm base,even that will be infilled with insulation panels,to prevent rising dampness,marine ply flooring.Building regulations are so strict and so much red tape to comply within my location'its so untrue.Like yourself it takes a considerable amount amount of time removing everything.Packing it all away for safety.Shed is down.ground work will start once the weather improves.So i'll be very busy for a good 6 months sorting that out alone.I must thank you on so many tips that you have shown in your last layout,so easy to follow,Which i must admit i did use a few like coach lighting to name only one.I do follow Dean Park Station and Jenny Kirk as well.Well that's enough of that.I wish you all the very best upon your process.I have even downloaded onto CD disc's of your old layout so i can go back onto any section as a form of reference library.So i have now start making anew set upon your new layout.I think the first track to be placed down will be around 9/10 months time,after basic layout,woodwork is completed.Like yourself work does take up one's time most of the time.But i have been very busy doing all my coach and racks with lighting.buffer end,fish plates wired as its the winter months.Once again i wish you all the success and process and loads of patients is required,I should know many a mistakes by rushing,then rip it up again. ....CAROL ps sorry to be so long in the tooth going on.O'h i do Southern era 3/4/5 plus one section of the layout will be of the 38 stock London Underground of the late 50's and early 60's Morden Station.

    Great to see an update on your progress. I can completely sympathize with the "real life" invading on the Railroad time. :) I really enjoyed your honesty about the choices you made in the track plan and how you are tailoring it to what you like to do with your railroad. Too many people are "unhappy" with their layouts in time because they haven't really thought about what they like to do with it; ie; Run trains around, Switching (Shunting I believe you call it), etc. Looking forward to the future updates.

    Looks great Richard. One thing though. Concrete sleepers have a much closer spacing than timber bullhead. 28 or 30 sleepers per 60ft compared to 24 per 60ft for bullhead. So you might not need to re-space the concrete sleepers after all.

    Great update again, I am looking forward to seeing the end result of the mainline bridge over the branch, the effect will be great with the flowing curve of the tracks. Just one point you might already know (or wish to consider anyway), as far as I can remember around the late 70's / early 80's the majority of point work was still on wooden sleepers, even when concrete was used on the plain line. Just a thought if you haven't bought any points as yet as you might want to replicate that look. Keep up the good work Richard, the layout is really coming on a treat.

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be using wood sleeper points as even today you can find them still in use. Only in the 2000s did concrete points start making an appearance.

    Hi Richard,
    I have gone down the same route of not having alot of sidings and such and keeping my curves very generous, It's amazing how much space you actually "loose" having large radius curves compared to say 3rd and 4th radius and the rest straight. I actually went down the scratch building track route which I have just started, I didn't make the gauge any larger though as I like not having to mess about with rtr stock, I have however made it a tad narrower to improve running, well that's the hope anyway.
    Cheers, Michael

    @ukdieselandelectricrailway1890 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's looking really great Richard.
    The station Halt has scope for a working station or a closed one.
    And there's plenty of prototypical examples for the former;
    West Ealing to Drayton Green: 0.41 miles
    Totton to Redbridge (nr Southampton): 0.57 miles
    St Erth to Leland Sidings (which doesn't have any sidings!) 0.5 miles
    Exeter St Davids to Exeter Central: 0.6 miles...
    ...all of which have a NSE theme to them and have InterCity services passing by!
    You didn't mention it, but once the branch line goes under the mainline, it curves to a box area.
    I'm guessing that's going to be a branch line station?
    That's nice, because it's good to see a 'junction' station going off to something.
    Looking forward to your next video!
    As regards the speed of your video content output, I'm sure I'll have the the same opinion as most people who subscribe... it's better to do it properly when you have the time, rather than rush it and have to fix things later!

    I think the idea of less is more is going to work out well The trains will appear to run further going out into the country than passing lots of sidings and industry. Also I was going to mention about the track but see Hugh Wark has already done so. The 1 in 50 is pretty steep but a 1 in 45 on a very sharp check railed curve branch in my area frequently saw not only DMU's but loco hauled 12 coach trains as well

    It's for sure is a time consuming task getting the elevated sections in. I've battled for the last 3 months on mine and it's almost there!. Though as much as I tried to keep it simple It just wouldn't work with the plans I had.. never the less I've just completed fitting the longest running section of mainline (through laira) that's on the incline and running on a slight curve and it's going to look the part seeing trains thundering up and down it!. End of this month will see out the last bits of elevated sections thank the Lord lol..
    Tim

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good Tim. Elevated sections certainly take time to set up but as we've said before the benefits for the scenery are huge. I've got loads of track laying to do now and re-spacing all the sleepers is making things progress very slowly.

    • @thescrapline4905
      @thescrapline4905 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      EverardJunction totally agree with how the visual impact on the scenery will be a massive advantage compared to table top layouts. I can vision it all on mine finally now I'm almost round the loft. One thing for sure is I'm reminded why I dropped carpentry and joinery from my profession a couple of years ago.. I've grown sick of cutting ply.. I've stood back many a times building this layout and thought I could build a huge bonfire with this lot!! Keep an eye out in the next week or so for my layout update showing the completed plan - let me know your thoughts..
      Cheers!

      The new layout is heavily influenced by the Great Western Mainline. Using google earth I've taken inspiration from most of the stations along the route.

    I have one question. It looks like when the layout is completed, the main lines here are going to be way out of your reach when standing at the front of the layout. How do you get access in case you have a derailment or for general maintenance?

    Hi Richard, great to see the layout taking shape, I really like the idea of that underpass, and I do agree with you in that being your layout, its shape has to satisfy noone but you. Just wanted to ask you, in the New Layout ideas, you mentioned that you were looking into adding the Faller car system or similar to the layout; will we see it or have you abandoned that idea? Anyway, great video, good work in continuing the build, greetings :)

      I have the Faller car system, and it works well

      A car system is very much on the cards. One of the reasons for the simple track plan is to allow space for roads.

      Just tell your employer hat you have to have more time for your hobby so you can keep up with your You Tube people and he might just give you the time. Although no job would put a crimp on the money needed to buy things. haha!!!!

    So good to see you back. Your track plan seems neat, clean and simple with the scenic plan sounding ideal for your modern image vision. The dedication to realism is inspirational and I look forward to further updates.
    Meantime, thank you for your work, good to see you are OK and still working. Hope your project "Granada" is also progressing well. Life is good when it is full.
    Again - welcome back.

    I wish it was my job, don't you? lol. Progress can be slow at times and even if you are working like a bear it doesn't always give much of a visual progression. Good luck with the track laying. I am working my way through scenic stuff just now....oh how I long to lay some track at times lol. Dave

      Problem with layout building is that much of the work is in big repetitive blocks. I'm just about about sick of working with wood and now I've got a huge amount of track laying to do. Really looking forward to starting some of the scenery.
      Work wise I'm in the minority. I actually love my job and wouldn't swap it for anything else.
      Cheers

      Yes...making a layout tends to move from one block of work to the next....I recall almost becoming depressed by the thought of making more card kits night after night when I did the roof/platforms of my station. Now I am getting that way with scratch building retaining walls.... I try to move from job to job, to give a bit of variety, but that isn't always possible as you have to do jobs A-C before D, and sometimes you have to just get your head down and complete jobs in order. I love my job, but I think I love modelling more lol. Dave

    Brilliant video! The open baseboard style you've chosen looks brilliant and I look forward to seeing the future updates. Seeing the Code75 comparison with Code 100 track is really interesting too. The incorporation of both Bullhead and Flat bottomed rail will very much compliment your layout nicely! I wish I'd got Code 75 instead of 100 now. Hope everything is going well for you - Jordan

    You had 1000+ thumbs up on your last video and only 30 thumbs down. That's 2.9% of those who watched the last video who (for some reason) didn't like/agree/has issues with whatever it was that they saw. If you want to address those people then they only deserve max of 2.9% of your video which is only 41 seconds. Keep up the awesome work, love watching you building at your own pace, making your own decisions. Wish I had the time, patience and skill to do it myself!

    Hi, thanks for this new video. There are certainly different "schools of thought" with regards to operations on model railways. Some prefer shunting, others - like you - like watching your trains run. Everything has its merit and you have to like, not the "community" on TH-cam or wherever. You should be sure however, whether "just" running trains will be satisfying for you in the long run. I do not know, how things are in GB, but surely sometimes locos get replaced on trains or industries need to be serviced by a siding. It wouldn't need to be a large yard or depot or whatever, just e.g. one or two sidings, just to add interest and additional operating possibilities. This just as a suggestion to avoid boredom on the layout down the road from my own experience.
    At the end of the day, it is however your layout! Have fun building it. :)
