Thanks for making this video! My great-grandfather was one of those Polish soldiers you mention as 16:12, who successfully reached Sweden. He was a forestry engineer with a child and a pregnant wife, who left home for a short work trip in August 1939. He was drafted on his way, fled to Sweden after the surrender, then joined with the British and kept fighting. He wouldn't see his parents again and would only see his wife and children again after 6 years when he found them dying of malnutrition after paying to have them smuggled to West Germany.
Our gardener in Edinburgh was a veteran like that. He fought on surrounded and outgunned and somehow made it through to Sweden then Scotland and the British Army. He lost his whole family and never returned to Poland. I was a child then and he was an old man but I did some weeding with him and smuggled out some extra vodka for him (which was his refreshment instead of tea). He was trained here as a parachute soldier and was in some serious brawls. The nearest he got to home was northern Germany, at the end. I wish I had listened and learned more from him. He spoke of things I later found in history books. RIP Mr M. Rudkowski (1912 - 1971)
thanks for sharing this story of great bravery and stolid resistance. I've never read anything about Polish military operations in the face of German assault. I suppose I assumed that the invaders rolled over the Poles easily and had a fairly easy victory. My ignorance is a bit reduced now.
Polish Area Specialist* here. The Poles had highly skilled fighters in all arms of the military, and have never, ever lacked for courage. But here they were outmanned and outgunned in every way. The closer you look at their organized military resistance before their capitulation, the more you will be amazed that they held out as long as they did. In particular, look up their submarine service. Several of their submersibles escaped to Britain, where they joined forces and returned to battle. The story of their escape is another tale of imagination and valor. *I was trained in the U.S. Army as a Polish linguist and area specialist. But my family history lies there, too, so there was always a personal interest.
@@richardletaw4068Thanks for this info! I’m going to look up some of the things you pointed out. I love history, military or otherwise. Also, I’m a Marine and I’ve actually served in combat with Polish soldiers in Afghanistan. They were 100% professionals and it was a privilege fighting with them. They treated me and the other Marine I was with better than we deserved. We were 2 scout snipers that got attached to them when they needed sniper support. Which mainly meant spotting targets and calling in arty or air cover. But we got trigger time too of course. I know they liked us because they knew we could bring down hell if things got bad enough and we needed to call for CAS. We were more than happy to help too. The Polish guys were putting a serious whooping on the target we were there for. I don’t know how much we might’ve helped. The Poles were instrumental in breaking enigma, and saved tens of thousands of allied lives. At least a million Americans and britons owe their very existence to them.
A million US/UK lives saved would be more than their total casualties for the whole of WW2. Enigma breakthroughs werent relevant in saving lives of UK;US to such a degree, ironically though likely saved more Soviets as convoys were the lifeline and main benefactor of codebreaking before the Wehrmacht started their retreat in 1943. Unfortunately Poles suffered more per capita than any other from Hitler and Stalin during WW2. Enigma being broken pre war couldn't have stopped the hell that nation endured, from both in WW2 and post war being abandoned by Roosevelt and Truman, that certainly saved lots of US/UK lives and makes you wonder what for.
I never hear much about how Poland was being invaded from the east by the USSR at the same time as Germany came in from the west. It was a coordinated attack between Germany and the USSR who were allies in the early days of WWII.
Pretty sad presentation. Numerous errors of commission and omission regarding the battle. Overly dramatic presentation in part made clear understanding of names of naval units hard to understand. Reliance on footage from other events useless. Maps would have been more helpful. Adverts did not contribute anything to the presentation. Considering unsubscribing.
It's bad enough this cop arrests the guy basically manufacturing a crime. When a prosecutor gets that file that's where it should've ended. The county never should've moved forward and those lawyers for the states should have used their prosecutorial discretion and chose not to except that police officers charging recommendations. I understand that it's an adversarial system and that's appropriate when we have real crime alleged. But a prosecutor should not inherently be trying to win a case that never should have even gotten to them. I hate to say it but it is all too rare that a judge stops unlawful prosecution like this before they get started.

Although we must remember all that happened in this war, I don't think this is the type of story I would expect from Dark Seas. Very average story, barely a footnote. Truly no offence intended, just an observation of the decline in quality of the Dark channels. They all seem to be just putting out anything and everything these days. I guess that's what happens to history channels that used to put out 4/5/6 videos each week in the end...
Just running out of History, eh? Limited newsreel to be adapted as well. The Reich invasion of Poland did, however, mean something to the UK though. Standing alone at the time, the UK said that Hitler had crossed the line, and then the Brits decared war, standing alone against Nazi Evil for the survival of Europe....
It's "average" stories that fill in the gaps behind the Big Ones. As I commented, the success of the Polish military in delaying the Germans is something I had never thought about. Now I know something that expanded my knowledge and encouraged me to seek more inf.
"Insane" is overused, though not as much as 'TRAGIC/TRAGEDY" whix=ch usually announces that the story will be about some famous person's unknown life and death--which often turns out to be remarkably unremarkable.
@@michaelsabatino7237 it's like "you know." It's lazy. It means you can't think of anything better to say. Those millions of subscribers might prefer more specific, detailed descriptions, you know?
