    I don’t agree the dealer is “off the hook”. The owner claimed they wanted to sell her a used engine! Thanks to you and a referral which was based on your good reputation, the Honda owner received competent and honest service. The dealer should be ashamed at the least, and they owe some sort of compensation, if only an apology and I think a full refund of the last repair bill Honda received payment.
    I’ve seen this too many times over many years, and every time I’m amazed how incompetency is so common. I think I’m being kind.
    Good job ERIC. You restore not only broken machines to working order, honestly and faithfully, you restore trust that there are good people, that work diligently. Well done!

    Remember when I was younger doing the DIYer stuff we use to do (I'm 60 now), you know the oil changes, plugs, points, starters, alternators, belts, etc and how now, I can only do the oil change or air filters, the simple stuff. Point is, even though you have a lift, quality power tools, analyzers , and stuff that may make it look easy , I am well aware that it is not easy. Sure you get a few piece of cake jobs, but more often than not, that time bent over them hoods or trying to contort your body so you can get at a particular part or whatever is not unnoticed. Nor is it not thought of the price you may invest in your tools/equipment/etc , which I'm quite sure a particular major tool would take a good while to recoop that cost of it. You have the best auto/truck repair channel on here in my opinion , so thanks again !

      Well points have vanished, plugs last a lot longer, and really most of the items you mention are easy enough to do, just under covers and the belts have different tighteners. Of course, depending on the engine configuration different parts can be harder to do.
      My car needs the timing belt to be removed to do the water pump, some cars it's much simpler.
      Also MUCH more information on how to do things.

Family members paying outrageous sums of money for vehicles brought in for minor repairs. I am beginning to think this is a systemic problem in the industry. Customers really need some advocates when faced with outrageous repair quotes, and I think channels like this help educate folks. A trick I use on belts and o-ings that have stretched, especially after having been exposed to solvents, is to heat them with a hair dryer. Lay them down on a clean flat paper towel with something heavy and round inside, maybe 1/4 inch tall and a little less in diameter than the o-ring (such as a jam jar lid) and heat them up with hot air in a circular motion. The lid keeps them from blowing away. They always shrink in diameter.

    Nice job getting her back on the raod. Yeah, nah, valves don't bend by themselves. I got a theory though. That dealer tech put the belt on wrong, turned it over by hand, bent the valve, realized he was off the mark somewhere, put it on right, and pretended like nothing happened.

I ran my own shop for a couple years I was never certified or anything and I kept getting people coming to me telling me they always used the shop down the road because he was a certified mechanic. But I was always having to fix his screw ups. And one day I went to visit him and on the front of the building lived a big sign we are all certified mechanics. I asked him what was he certified to do and it was breaks. Lol.

    • @bobbyd9583
      @bobbyd9583 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      turning by hand easily bend a valve if you put any pressure on it. there is a lot of mechanical leverage. And part of the timing belt install process on most hondas has you moving the engine over a few times to ensure proper timing belt alignment and tension. I have had a few rookie techs bend some valves that I had to pay for.

    Mr. Eric O. I honestly have to say that your series of videos is comparable to watching an "edge of your seat" tv show. For example, this three parter, was filled with nail-biting suspense and action. But, it also highlighted on complexity and the "conflict between man and machine". Yet, there was no need for un-necessary violence or profanity. It was wholesome and honest along with being highly infomative and educational. You displayed emotion. Yet, on que, you still delivered them provebial comedic chops without hestation. You oozed such poise and integrity and I watched intently from beginning to end and I quite certainly feel satisfied with my viewing experience. Me: standing proudly, slow clap starting with me.. Either the cash register is ringing or the kids are chasing each other around again, with the dogs in tow. Lol I wish I could have done what Eric is doing and I wouldn't change a thing, kids or dogs. I just hope Mrs O sticks with it because she seems a little overwhelmed at times. I do totally understand she is handling a full time job, taking care of a home, while raising and coordinating a families daily activities. The work load she has (not Mrs O abilities) is the weak link in this whole thing. That's a lot of work for anyone. The same goes for Eric. In the old days everyone used to work in the family business. But life was a lot simpler then and a lot less complicated also, so it was possible back then. Now days I think a little help with those mundane chores, that don't involve any family or parent child time is necessary, to do a good job. I don't believe in nannys flat out. So hire her a home helper once or twice a week, to do all that stuff that takes away from any together time. Such as house cleaning and clothes washing. Picking up dinner out or shopping for the weekly necessities. Paint the garage or clean out the gutters. Even shoveling snow and mowing the grass if you don't involve the children. Have them do the things that family members don't do with each other. Also do not involve them in any family outings or activities, or even something like cooking dinner or making the beds if your a mom that likes to involve the kids in that chore. You'll be surprised how much pressure this will relieve, even if you set the amount of help to a minimum. Imagine how nicer it would be when the unexpected things arise if you don't have to worry about fitting in those extra chores or items. And you don't have to hire professionals for a lot of the outside things. Hire teens and college students for the mowing or garage painting. The things they can do will be cheaper than a professional. Keep up the hard work, both of you and thanks again for the videos Eric. Jpol

    • @ecleveland1
      @ecleveland1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I've heard that sound before and it wasn't good. I put a set of spark plugs in my mother's SUV and when I started the truck up after the job it sounded like someone was beating it with a sledge hammer. It was just a coincidence but it broke a wrist pin and piston, nothing I did caused it. Best me and another mechanic could figure was an injector was staying open and leaking fuel in the cylinder and that little bit of extra fuel caused a hydraulic lock and bent the wrist pin.

I had a devil of a time to figure out where that wheel bearing had gotten to when it came time to put it back together, I can tell you. • @paulcopeland9035

      ..You have engines! A conventional (go away Tesla) automobile has an engine. An engine "converts" energy ( gas, diesel, etc) to produce motion, a motor "requires" energy (electricity, steam, etc) to produce motion. I know, I know, the English language interchanges these definitions quite a bit, the most famous being steam engine. It is actually a steam motor, but nobody says that! Oh well, there you have it. It is what it is.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn't it be a steam "engine", since it's converting the energy in the coal to make it run? The steam is just an interim step between combustion and motion, a way to get that energy from the fire and to the pistons.

    Feeler gauges, getting the feel...use a micrometer with a clutch on it and "tighten" it on the the feeler and slide it back and forth. Should have about that resistance on the valve. I've noticed on motorcycle valves or automotive valves too I'm sure that if the feeler isn't inserted very parallel the "feel" isn't right, so straight in is important as well. Great vid thanks. I like watching this more than netflix. Consider yourself entertaining.

    My late father was a General Motors mechanic from 1938 until sometime around 1975. Worked mostly on Chevies and Pontiacs. If he had seen what you have to go through to repair an engine in these years, he probably would have decided to go back and work on his grandfather's farm. He ended his career doing wheel alignment because he considered that to be the easy part of keeping cars running. I have to say that I was impressed by watching you work on what you claim to be a relatively easy car to work on. My father would have had a heart attach watching this...

The intakes are VVT or VCT, your choice. They're good. A few other parts also went in, runs good again. One thing about the Nissan 3.5 and 4.0 liter engines is the rear or back timing case cover. It houses two oil galleys that are covered with steel covers and have "gaskets" that like to break under those steel covers! I've only seen one you tube video showing a replacement gasket. All others, including OEM says change the rear cover, which is what I did. My old one was definitely coming loose. Oh well!

      @Geno yes. It's a guarantee. Valves do not bend because of carbon build up. The tech that did the timing belt screwed up. Even one tooth off on the timing belt can do it and I believe those cam gears have more than one mark. That's why you ALWAYS roll the engine over by hand ( with the spark plugs out) after assembly but before the first start.
      That said, you can bend a valve by hand too, that's why you do it with the plugs out. It should turn over without any resistance at all for at least two full crankshaft rotations.

    the Best listening device I have found is a stethoscope with a piece of copper tubing on the end. Use it to poke around in the engine compartment and in the engine. just get an inexpensive stethoscope with one tube to the listening bell, remove the bell from the tube and insert an appropriately sized piece of copper tubing. you may make it as long or as short as you wish to reach into whatever areas you need to. it is a lot better than trying to use an oil funnel to listen for air leaking from the oil dipstick tube. I found this an excellent way to find exhaust leaks around headers and exhaust joints.

    I still say that the timing chain being put on incorrectly was the cause of the original bent valve issue. The guide wear is nothing new but the bent valve is impossible without something bending them. It was no coincidence that the engine ran differently after the timing chain was replaced not to mention the dealer was dead wrong on the engine being bad.

    • @zensterful

      I know what you mean. You'd never prove it, but I'd bet the tech who "fixed" the timing chain had it a tooth or so off...bent the valve a little...the fixed his fix. There's no evidence that way, but some sort of impact is usually needed to bend a valve stem.

    • @bg147
      @bg147 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I wonder why the dealer told her she needed a new motor. Did they diagnose it properly and figured both heads would require work which led them to make a value decision and recommend replacing the whole motor? If the exhaust guides were all bad, maybe the other head will require servicing down the road. Or maybe they mid-diagnosed the problem but it would be interesting to know what they thought was bad on the motor to replace it.

      The door bell does not bother me at all. As you stated it is a business. I don't understand some people that complain about the bell then unsubscribe. This channel and ScannerDanner's channel are my favorite. Keep up the great work Eric O.

      Those complaints are from Scotty Kilmore fan boy's. They're not used to seeing a real working shop.
      Doorbell and ringing phone is a good sign, that Eric is busier than he lets on. If I lived in up state NY, I'd be one of those customers. I'm 41, and hurts me to work and crawl under my vehicle. I have little choice though. The only guys in town that are trustworthy, command $90 and hour.
      These are indies, not the dealer. The dealer wants $110 an hour, and do nothing more than "throw parts" and vehicle's. Can you guess who pays the price? The poor customers! This is why Eric's phone never stops ringing.

      Eric O. needs to make his intro music a song compiled of door bell chimes and phone rings of different tones. That will really make them complain.

    I think she was just unlucky and had a bad engine. I'm not sure if that particular engine is the best engine Honda has ever made. Question is was it a manufacturing defect, assembly defect or does the engine itself have a slight design defect and some people just get unlucky? I have heard of some of these being plagued by head gasket failure.
    I wouldn't have reused them bolts. I would have been to nervous to put that much torque on them. How odd. But evidently it worked out in the end. Man it would have been a bad day if you had stripped one of the threads...
    Thanks for taking the time to video this Eric. Its an interesting case study. Also interesting because I've never seen one of these Honda V6 engines in the UK. Guess if i ever do see one I'm set now. haha
