@@meMiner This rock material has limited calcite in it. The rest is a bluish quartz I believe. I'll make a video in a day or two and post a link here. All I have for a camera is my phone. Hopefully it will work.

A friend did that for me during the summer from similar material with his forge. The heat burns off some of the contaminates and it makes a pretty bar.

Yeah. This process is not for kids. Let me know if you want to try an in class experiment and use white vinegar. It will take a long time for the vinegar to dissolve the calcite (and have to be refreshed a number of times), but the result will be the same.

How do you tell a silver nugget from a chunk of lead in a host rock? They both look similar to me. Do you go by the detector or is there another simple way to tell in the field? All good videos too. Thx for explaining rockhounding to us newbies.
The detector tells me quite a bit. More important is there is no veins of lead in the area. If it was a spot with galena, then I would have to be more careful calling something silver.

I dropped some gold nuggets there and used a metal detector. I found some silver I had dropped. Heck, I have some 20-30 lb silver ore rocks that my daughter put into the garden, as she thought they were in her way in the garage she works on her motorcycle, snowmobile and ATV. If something happens to me, those rocks will probably still be there 50 years from now.
Muria is brutal but effective. We don't have much of it around now, since we terminated the hot pool. What is the general assay purity of the native silver there in percent?
If you binge watch your videos, you will expect to eventually see you hopping into your truck with a giant pile of waste rock in the front of your driveway lol
How long did that process take? I've got a few chunks of silver as well, but I'm not sure if I'm leaving the solution long enough or not (I tend to do it in the field vs home - too many kids and animals running about)
Usually, I am done in a day or leave them in weak acid overnight. This project took me 3 days because it was so cold and the days were short. Good for you keeping it way from kids and pets. It would be awful if there were a spill

Ok so I hate ASMR but I feel like this is the closest thing I’ll ever get to that haha. I love geology but work a lot so I appreciate watching all your interesting content!
It is easier to mechanically polish it while still in the rock and then etch, so all of the exposed silver is shiny. Now, it would too fragile and I would end up knocking off all the little pieces that stick out. There are some other methods and solutions that I have tried with limited effect.
It will burn up the iron in the sands but not the quartz. I have used it to clean my placer gold. Probably not economical, but it does a nice job to clean iron stain off the gold

@@russsherwood5978 When you have a few samples, give one a go with etching. Nothing to lose but the rock you sacrifice. As for the block into state land, I have seen that (and gates close) during hunting season on state land in PA. The best thing I saw was a fellow with a bicycle. He peddled in 5 minutes what it took me a half hour to walk.

I have picked up some tips from you, so will leave you one!....if you have some delicate wires or pure silver specimens that are brown from Cobalt dirt, don't put them in a tumbler...boil water with a piece of aluminum foil, after adding the specimen, pour in some baking soda...it will clear off loose soil, clear tarnish and give you a sweet item as nature designed it! ..I expect a video showing this! Lol
I tried that method a number of years ago and found that tarn-x worked as well. I have not been very successful finding wire silver of any size. Maybe next year

@@TBirdHEX Yes, but some are quite dangerous to use outside of a lab. If you google "mineral solubility table", you can see what common minerals are affected and unaffected by various acids.

I'd love to see the gold one etched. Usually, gold is in quartz and HCL won't affect quartz. Brass is copper and zinc. Zinc is affected by HCL.

There are ways to harden or encase fragile rocks. I have never tried, but it might be a good idea for some of the samples. Thanks and Merry Christmas

You can always leave a little bit of calcite or more calcite than silver. Sometimes it can looks rally good.

They use different mechanical, chemical and heat processes. This is the technique used by rock collectors. Merry Christmas

Try polishing with sugar water. Just guessing. Apparently sugar converts silver oxide into elemental silver. Im not sure if the black is silver oxide.
I tried coke cola one time. Didn't do much.

Likely it was from the nickel. There is some copper in the samples, but probably not enough to stain the solution.

This looks fairly pure, but I would have to test it to be sure. There are some minerals typically present that the muriatic won't affect.

@@russsherwood5978 When you have a few samples, give one a go with etching. Nothing to lose but the rock you sacrifice. As for the block into state land, I have seen that (and gates close) during hunting season on state land in PA. The best thing I saw was a fellow with a bicycle. He peddled in 5 minutes what it took me a half hour to walk.

I have picked up some tips from you, so will leave you one!....if you have some delicate wires or pure silver specimens that are brown from Cobalt dirt, don't put them in a tumbler...boil water with a piece of aluminum foil, after adding the specimen, pour in some baking soda...it will clear off loose soil, clear tarnish and give you a sweet item as nature designed it! ..I expect a video showing this! Lol
I tried that method a number of years ago and found that tarn-x worked as well. I have not been very successful finding wire silver of any size. Maybe next year

After you got the calcite off the Silver I would have liked to have seen you roast it and smelt the silver

Does Muriatic acid also work for Gold ore?
I have used it to clean gold. It won't affect quartz so if the gold is in quartz, it won't etch.
@@meMiner Good to know. Is there another type of acid that you would use specifically for dissolving other minerals off Gold in the same way you do here for Silver? Or is it just best to smelt Gold with Flux to separate impurities the old fashioned way? Love your work dude. Big up from Oz
@@TBirdHEX Yes, but some are quite dangerous to use outside of a lab. If you google "mineral solubility table", you can see what common minerals are affected and unaffected by various acids.
