  • Gold & silver refining using the cupelling process for removing base metals (copper, lead, iron, antimony, zinc, etc) from our smelted gold buttons. This process works on silver as well as platinum, palladium, and other precious metals, too. This is an ancient process that has been used since the bronze age for removing base metals from precious metals. It is inexpensive, low tech, low skill and works very well for getting refined gold and sliver with very little contamination. Using only lead, portland cement, and a torch the base metals are heated, oxidized, and removed from the precious metals by the cupel. It is a great way to take your smelted gold, silver, precious metal buttons and increase the purity of the precious metals with very little work or effort.

So just use cement barrier gold in then lead on top, melt to refine it. This video has been helpful, Thank You!

Well done, Jason! In addition to Portland cement (calcium oxide) you could use ground glass or calcium phosphate (available as a fertilizer or bone meal) or crushed magnesite. The problem with using glass is that gold is soluble in molten glass just like lead oxide is. If you were to use bone meal fertilizer, you would first have to burn off all the left over organics like fat which smells bad and smokes a lot. If you used copper as the collector metal while processing the original gold button, you may find a lot of copper remains distributed throughout the final gold button (to be determined with a quick x-ray analyzer). Gold and copper form a pretty strong marriage if inadequate amounts of flux are used. I wish more video authors discussed gold ore processing options like you have done so people wouldn't expose themselves to mercury, vaporized lead, cyanide, nitric acid, and a bunch of related compounds that form during the processing. Again, I must say: "Well done, Jason!"

Qouted = Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and non-specialty grout. It was developed from other types of hydraulic lime in England in the late 19th century by Joseph Aspdin, and usually originates from limestone

would it would be possible to use this process in separating gold from let's say old cell phones and electronic boards that have visibly good quality gold. Assuming everything is cut up into very small pieces. Could this process be used?

Great video Jason! I was hoping I could ask a rookie question if that's ok?! I'm having a hard time getting all the micro fine gold I'm finding and I was wondering if the blast furnace stage - where you create the Lye/Borax/Silica flux will help me remove all the fine sands. Does this just turn to glass in the slag? This will save me hours of panning gold dust haha! Thanks for all the amazing content man - you're teaching me to mine!! :)

It is better to invest now. You will never be younger than you are today and there will never be a perfect time to invest. Due to compounding, which Einstein called the 8th wonder of the world, you can get rich slowly from investing if you do it from a young enough age.

So what you produce out of the alloy was pure gold or how close to pure gold do you get doing that process of melting out base metals with lead oxidation
