- Officials from the Consumer Commission together with the Department of Home Affairs and the City of Johannesburg's Environmental Health inspectors have started a week-long inspection of spaza shops in Soweto.
These inspections aim to ascertain compliance with the Consumer Protection Act and other applicable laws, regulations and by-laws.
This follows the death of six children from alleged food poisoning after eating snacks bought from a local spaza shop here in Naledi, Soweto.
To get an update on the investigations being done, we are joined by the Gauteng Police Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni and Corrie Bezuidenhout, Deputy Director Environment Health, City of Johannesburg.

Why can't these spaza shops close because these people don't have correct papers to be running businesses in our country, whats so difficult
No Political Will.
They cant close down on their own....customer should stop buying from these spaza shops and report all poisonous foods consumed to local authorities but it stops there because they are lazy to investigate and shut them.down.
Am also wondering why can't close those shops
Spaza shops run by the so called "asylum seekers" 😩😩
They are in every village and township across the country with pop ups in cities as well. Thus to say they're everywhere and the government allowed them to break every protocol, legislation and regulation at the expense of us South Africans. Year after year these death incidents happen but they (government) maintain the same attitude. To them it's really nothing if it doesn't affect them or any of their children
@@LBR57ytthat's like telling a jaguar not to hunt crocodiles because they're dangerous. Hunger will make every sane person overlook the consequences. It starts with government intentionally and deliberately choosing to revitalize and supporting township economies - not buying from them is almost an impossible ask 🤦🏾♂️
It's very disappointing to hear that the government didn't assist in the burial of the children. What a shame.
Protect mkonti at all cost 🙏🏿
Really. They must follow up. The money must be followed
Her journalism is completely Outstanding! The right questions!
He on the other hand is a complete disgrace for 0 prosecutions while people are dying?
Please close all the spaza shops
ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED YEARS AGO HAD THE GOVERNMENT LISTENED TO THE COMMUNITY. HOW MANY TIMES WAS EXPIRED AND COMPRISED FOODSTUFFS BEEN FOUND IN THESE SHOPS OVER THE YEARS. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST CHILDREN TO HAVE DIED OR BEING SICKED. THE FAMILY SHOULD SUE THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH.
Is seems like this inspector is clueless
Yes he is...incompetent...mumbling ..sucking his dried lips and seems nervous to answer the questions asked by Sakina.
He has disappointed us as the public...he also gets a salary for doing nothing and he has because if he had done his job as the inspector we would not be having these issues.
This people have sue the state
Must they or did they sue them. I wish they do if they haven't done so
Listen to the whole inspector stuttering, clueless 😢
We need to do away with informal business. Once that is done then all this ends. Most of these people don’t qualify to open a business.
Not just in soweto, they should go around each and every province cause these spaza shops are all over south africa 😢
If the persons are illegal and the shop is illegal ....why do you need the health department to investigate. Please just close the shops if you find that they are illegal🙏.
Why do they wait for something to happen first before they can do something 👀
Beacause the authorities are lazy...they dont do their job..just collecting a salary paid by tax payers. There are many unemployed people who could go out and do their jobs better.
Imagine for more than 30 years thesame inspectors had been paid for not doing their jobs
@@nellymchunu3620 like I don't understand it 💔💔💔
Where is the minister of small businesses? She failed those children, does she deserve her salary
Yes, she's deserve her Salary. But u deserve R350
The city is being cheap. There ought to be Environmental compliance officers and then Health and safety Officers. In the private sector it’s two different Audits. Even worse, they’re robbing employment opportunities.
The expirey dates gets erased and printed back on.We need a system from the manufacturer that can be used against barcodes , this will verify if a product has expired or not but we all know that foreign owned tuck-shops care nothing about hygiene and safety
legalrightsguru AI fixes this. Calls for spaza health awareness.
Why is this so difficult for us, the community must forcefully remove/close those shops if they care for themselves.
People are just going to loot again😂just stop buying from them
@@Kirsten567 after they loot then another one comes back next week then it's business as usual but if we stop buying it will naturally drive them out of the communities willingly so
some departments need to be surrendered to the DA and PA.Anc are just in a comma about some important issues.
Exactly
Morning. Sad to hear the loss of any life. It is quiet serious when the actual manufacturers sell the product and the wholesalers who can't clear the products of their shelves on time that they push it out at a lower cost to spaza and retail stores. This problem starts with the manufacturers. Ligitimate or not.
Interesting they only push it to foreign owned spaza shops. Sorry, they in cahoots together.
Some of your people manufacturing they own too and packaging it in wrong packagers
What couldve, wouldve and shouldve been prevented, Disaster strikes, claims lives of innocent children, Why ?
Unlicenced to sell spaza shops ,just for the money and no regular inspections conducted, irregularities of expired/ poisoned foods sold,
never authorized by govermment ,stake holders and community leaders .
Its very sad !😔 😢
If you can't go to a mall to buy bread and milk go to shoprite..everyday fresh bread for cheap
My say exactly.
Let's start with the structures themselves. Did these foreigners bring their own shops or they rent from the locals?
They rent from our own people who are desperate for income.
Our people make me so sick. They don't go and confront they neighbor who harvest these people in they communities and expect to involve the government which the government is also at fault because the government have to deal with these illegal people in the country because is a crime but the government also harvest them in the country.
It is ironic how the local communities support these spaza shops until someone dies after eating goods from these shops!
you go to a shop within your proximity until a problem arises from said shop. are they wrong to have done so? i dont understand why there is an exclamation in your statement.
@@hellodarknesss.myoldfriend you correct 💯, we are in a culture of proximity (ShopRite doesn't sell loose cigarette, loose nappies, one candle).tuck shops are here to stay, amakula must go.however the elephant in the room is the landlord ufuna his/her rent money are we able to fill that void?
This Provincial Commissioner needs to be replaced by the KZN Police Commissioner. He is evasive and id not answer any of Sakina's questions.
Stop supporting their businesses😂
can this guy Corrie resign listening to this tired old man is deflating
This gentleman knows all the problems, now what can be done to solve the issues
It's very sad how innocent children has lost there lives from eating from a spaza shop that has been selling old foods maybe even snacks or what ever they sell condolences to those families of the children who have passed away
Even chinese, Portugesse shops has that habit of erasing the expiring date
All what is gentle man saying its untrue i have never seen inspectors in my neighbors Spaza, never before.....cops come occasionally dont know for what...
People need Spaza shops for everyday needs. You can't go to the mall everyday just to buy a Bread and milk.
How do the spaza shops and retailers comply when their suppliers lie to them. 90% of the small manufacturers don't even charge vat, all business under the table
When they are under staff, why are they not hiring nurses, pharmacists, and assistant to assist with inspections and just try them. Isn't it that they are the health inspectors because i heard environmental health, so isn't it that nurses, etc, can also assist to curb this expired foods in shops.
WE ARE ALL DEAD. KIDS ARE DYING YOU AND STILL NO ONE HAS BEEN ARRESTED. WE ARE IN TROUBLE SA
A bullshit Inspector !!!, 1 inspector for an Area ??? hire More !!
We the people of South Africa are being deliberately deprived by the owners of capital to own these spaza ourselves and, they rather cooperate with foreign nationals. And all that is done to prove that black people can't government, knowing very well that reserve bank is privately owned by the very same banks it suppose to regulate.
Please expand on this matter. How is that happening
This gentleman is talking lies. I'm in Kzn,and never ever see these people in Phoenix
The last person being interviewed literally just spewed a bunch of nothing mos.
SPAZA SHOP OWNERS SaID ON NATIONAL TV, HEALTH INSPECTORS AND SAPS COME AROUND REGULARLY THREATENING THEM FOR BRIBES.
eyonangxaki mntase in mzantsi africa its corruption, bayazenza inspections but bayanyotywa nantso iingxaki, ndiyavuya kule GNU, ANC GOVERNMENT ITS VERY CORRUPT
Hi the government could at least helped the family s with the funerals it's very traumatic for the family s so sad and heartbreaking 😢
Give our people money to buy and own the. Shops ourselves..never mind what colour our people are..then the profits stay in our. Country its not going outside..and bloodywill check their papers and visas also..go to home affairs and sort their staff out countrywide..this governmrnt don't give a dime what happen to our children and people in sa.
What a shame ugovernment akanandaba nama-SA. Mina ngibona kungcono sigweme ukuthenga kulama tuckshop
10000to 15000 spaza shops in Soweto 😮
If there was a stumpeed, did the mourners come to bury the kids or came for free lunch?
For free lunch
This guy is clueless and inept...
In the EC it's worse and ANC is quite 😂😂
Please check to the big wholesaler if you if you really want to sort this matter out don't trouble on Small Business specially from this news channel
They bring in things from outside South Africa and make their own food. Spaza shops are greedy for profit and they don't care what they sell and they need to be closed down.
EMAGINE FAMILIES WHO LOST THEIR KIDS , NGENXA YOBUBUBHANXA BE ANC GOVERNMENT,COZ ,IM VERY ANGRY MNA
Zuma said in 2015 during his presidenacy foreigners must be treated fairly and violence and looting is disgusting. Well done MK voters. Stop complaining now
This guy is lying!

Lawd, this country is so terribly, hopelessly incapacitated. Certainly when it comes to individuals and organized groups supposedly appointed to oversee existing laws!! 🥸
