My 4 yr old son asked me where wind comes from a couple of days ago. We started learning about it and we just did a couple of these experiments at our house with my other kids under 6. My kids LOVED it. Not sure if you can go wrong with eggs, water balloons and FIRE. Afterwords they said, "Wow, air is so cool!" THANKS for sharing this with us!

I think it has to do with both air and gravity ; while the air is getting out of the bottle because of the heat , there is no more force acting on the egg than the gravity that makes its work , therefore the egg falls down.

Better idea is to put the bottle into hot water then put the egg on top and rapidly cool the bottle using ice water. This can be used to crush cans but you need to put in the can opening down to close in the air. BE CAREFUL! This can be really dangerous. Do it with proper safety gear and proper care!

Hot air is lighter than cold air is because if air is hot the particles get bigger so into the bottle fits less air. Less particles equals less weight. The egg bounces because air is leaking out. When the air gets cold the particles shrink that means low pressure and that pushes the egg in the bottle.

Warm air expands, "pushing" some of the air out of the bottle. As it cools, it contracts -- this drops the pressure inside, more pressure outside.
