  • You can always replace the gas tank, but why not try to clean it before investing in a new one?
    If the tank is damaged, dirty and rusty beyond repair, you’d have to replace it anyway. However, if there are only mild corrosion and dirt, you can probably clean it. This is a good way to avoid added expenses of replacing the tank altogether.
    Keep in mind that strong acids can damage your bike and possibly cause serious injury. That is why white vinegar is recommended because it is strong enough to remove rust while remaining safe for your bike and your health. When working with chemicals and fuels, ventilation is essential. It is better to be safe and move outdoors.
    This is how I clean my 1995 Honda Magna VT250 motorcycle gas tank.
    The entire process is relatively simple and doesn’t take too much time.

    How did you get all the water out, I can't seem to get all of it out no matter which way I turned it and shake it.

      Yes there is some water left in the end. Use a air blower to drain the remaining water.

    Do you have to use the air compressor to clean out the tank? If you’re not going to ride your bike for a while, is it best to keep a full tank or to empty the tank? What are different options to coating the inside of the tank?

      In this video I use air compressor to dry the tank after putting backing soda and distilled water to neutralize it.
      If you’re not going to ride your bike for a while, Water in the fuel can also cause corrosion. the best course of action is to drain the fuel tank completely, then refill the tank to its full capacity adding a fuel stabilizer recommended by the bike's manufacturer. If you want to start the bike regularly, full tank is the best option.
      There are so many tank sealing product in the market. The challenges here are that the liquid sealer dries very quickly, it is hard to know if it is even, and the outdoor temperature and humidity impact dry time and quality - could cause cracking. So the best thing is to get the service of a specialist.

      You can blow it out as much as you can and if you have some methanol you can flush the residual water out because it mixes with water. Then flush it with gas with a cup or so of transmission fluid mixed with the gas. The transmission fluid has anti rust additives. When I have to store my bike for an extended period I fill it with non ethanol gas and a cup or so of transmission fluid and shake the bike good which will coat the inside of the tank.

    How many baking soda and destilled water did you use?

    • @IdeaShip
      @IdeaShip  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4-5 table spoons of baking soda is enough for 11liter / 2.9 gallon fuel tank.

    Why you use distilled water?

    • @IdeaShip
      @IdeaShip  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After the vinegar treatment then we put backing soda and distilled water to neutralize the tank. The reason why we put distilled water instead of tap water is free of organic and inorganic chemicals, heavy metals, volatile gases, cysts and other contaminants. Distilled water contains virtually no solids, minerals or trace elements. It is clean and natural.

      @@IdeaShip another tip is to use transmission fluid, it has anti rust additives that protect the transmission parts, plus it burns good with the gas, just don’t use too much of it.
