With all we allow ourselves to be bombarded and overwhelmed with, we start to believe that the existence of the pure and noble and selfless and admirable and good is a myth, an illusion. Turning to and focusing on and believing in light and virtue may be our only hope and "salvation". Thank you for reminding me that it may be that simple.
"Feel free to quit" is really one of my biggest epiphanies in 2021! I was taught to fight for everything. It's also a spiritual approach: If you don't feel aligned with something anymore, let it go. You are making space for new things to come which may be more fitting to you. Maybe your soul chose to experience many things.. it's nice! There is a society stigma that you are weak if you don't fight. I'm so happy i released myself from this stressful artificial thought. It doesn't mean I will get lazy or don't want to do anything anymore. It's just: You want to discover yourself. We are in actuality all free spirits !! :*

I really needed to hear this. I find myself browsing social media to "keep up" and it really only makes me feel so much worse, sadder, more despondent. I need to take care of my anxiety in the best way I can and getting rid of social media will definitely help.

Audiobooks help me tremendously, because it gives the distraction I’m looking for, but it is more focused, more a personal choice and more constructive for me. Authenticity is a gem to be protected in these days🙏 Create more than you consume really stands out for me!
About 4 years ago I started to realize that I was overwhelmed and unhappy. I analyzed my life and found my consumption of “social media“ was hurting me. I was on so many things I thought were there to enlighten and entertain, but they really made me anxious and fearful. I peeled away each source over a couple months to nothing. It was an opportunity to reset without someone whispering in my ear on how to live MY life. After a year, I decided to consume again when I found BookTube on TH-cam. I only consume content that supports my desire to be healthy, happy and creative. I admit, I am a consumer of books (not realizing they, too, are “media”- thank you for pointing that out), so I’m not a purist in the sense of zero media, but I am extremely selective about what I allow into my precious personal space. Your message is so important. One of the most pernicious lies is that we are not “ok” if we are not in the loop. You have given ppl a way to escape the trap (permission, if you will), to be ok with no external influence. Thank you!
I also had a similar process with Squid Game. I knew it was too dark for me and decided not to watch it. And then all the articles about it tempted me. I held strong and didn't watch it. You are so right about the pressure. I also like your statement "create more than you consume". Such a simple but astute guide to live by. I enjoy the new possibilities, knowing their attraction. It’s so easy to watch others and sit… and sit… and watch…pretending this is life. It’s OUR CHOICE, always. I didn’t even have a Tv for about 20 years. But I decided to use and choose media with care, for entertainment, inspiration and support. We are not forced to use, what doesn’t fit…we’re only attracted. I’m also attracted by sweets, especially marcipane…but I don’t choose it for my main food. 😉. I have had both good and bad experiences with social media. I do like following Facebook Groups that are about interests I enjoy. It’s a great way to interact with folks that have similar interests. It becomes my personal news feed of things I enjoy. I’ve also started to unfollow people that have more of a negative influence. So I’ve been working on making social media a more positive place by adjusting what I follow in a more mindful way.
A timely reflection on choosing time wisely for ourselves. As you say, whether material goods or media consumption, both can easily sap our time and creativity, while increasing anxiety. Being aware of how we spend our time is ultimately respecting ourselves, and listening to our intuition when it comes to media consumption is absolutely key. I think one of the best advice that I've heard is to create rules for yourself as to what type of content you want/don't want to read/listen to/watch and stick to it. I gave up watching/reading news about 10 years ago after I read this amazing advice from Tim Ferriss in his book: 4hr work week. It said something along the lines of: if it's important - people will be talk about it. You can pretty much read the headlines on the newspapers in the shop and know what's going on. I've saved so much time and energy by not reading the news. They are rarely good anyway.

Hi Ana, I completely agree with you. Our brains are not equipped to deal with so much information and it so easily leads to overwhelm and depression. I too avoid any sort of violence as it’s not entertaining for me. One fabulously positive aspect of social media is animal rescue. I participate in FB auctions for many little rescues in places like Romania, Egypt and Macedonia. (In fact we just rescued 2 adorable street puppies from Macedonia 🐶❤️). You know that your items/donations are going to feed/neuter/save the animals directly and there is no admin or CEO. You can also click for free food for rescues on various sites. We truly need to work at guarding our personal convictions and not allow ourselves to be swayed. These are excellent points and unfortunately, in my experience, most people don't put enough emphasis on evaluating what is truly beneficial for their lives. I feel overwhelmed with social media in a way that it drains me and I need my positive energy for my art and creative work and passions. So I must limit my intake of social media in all forms. I only listen to inspiring or creative TH-cam videos just like the videos that you share here. I like videos that makes me think and that inspires me, that has something good for my future or videos that resonates with me as a human being. As an Empath, my biggest tool I use to cope with the world and with social media is Meditation or doing things I love while meditating. I must do that every day. I go outside in nature by myself when I need to breathe and take a break from TH-cam. I totally agree on everything you say in this video. Thanks always for your inspiring and very valuable videos. I at one point removed everyone from my Face Book account who I do not know intimately, and I deleted my Instagram account all together I don't own a television and TH-cam is a luxury I afford myself but only at a minimum. There is so much useless information that bombards our senses every minute of every day if we let it that with the internet what it is as of now there seems to be no reason to have our own imagination anymore because we can go online and use someone else's. Hi Ana, thanks for another wonderful and meaningful video! I too have resisted Squid Game for the same reasons as you. I also quit watching The Handmaid's Tale - just felt surrounded by darkness every time I watched an episode. I try to immerse myself with light rather than dark, and I don't need to succumb to the pressure of others to consume this or that current trend. I quit Facebook several years ago (and didn't miss it), but recently rejoined and regret it-I will be quitting again soon and the same for Instagram (going to overhaul my social media use as a goal for 2022). I think so very much of social media is detrimental to society and the human psyche, and in fact, I see it as largely responsible for the terrible divisiveness in the US currently (and perhaps the world). One positive, however, has been finding your lovely VLOG:) Most of the time I spend on social media in general though is just time wasted and could have been spent on many more productive and positive things. Lastly, I also don't feel the need to finish something just to say I finished it, or to impress anyone. If It doesn't resonate with me, I leave it be and move on.

I have had a lot of health battles the last few years, such as open heart surgery, twice. In those times everyone wants to know what’s happening. But I am much too weak and sick to phone everyone. But I can put a little post on Facebook and everyone gets the message! Sometimes I have hundreds of replies. So I am very thankful for FB in those times. Beyond that I want to say I feel scalded by your honesty. Until you said it, I never realized I have read things to seem, but I have. Certainly in college. But since too. I think I didn’t realize because I do not dig as deep and am not as relentlessly honest as you. You are causing me fo do many re-evaluations. Thank you.

I can relate to your feelings around the media. My big concern is they are manipulating and attacking our freedom. I am considering quitting Facebook and Instagram. The only thing that is kind of stopping me is that I am part of few groups of Slow Stitching Meditation. Usually I follow something or someone until I learn what I need to learn. About a year ago I realized how much media influences the way I feel or where I put my focus on life. The things I consumed as well as social media was making me so unhappy. I’m on a journey to be more selective in my time and energy. I still have a lot of work to do but it has really helped me so far. Also your videos are so wonderful and peaceful! :)

They can really bring you down and make you feel miserable, but I have also observed great moments of friendship and help. I was hoping you'd do a video about this ! I liked that you focused more on the "why" than the "how". This is definitely something I struggle with. There are so many books/articles I want to read & movies to watch that I struggle to give one my full attention! FOMO basically .😬 We are about the same age & it's unbelievable how much is at our fingertips compared to even when we were small children!
Overall I feel the same about social media, but here are two positive experiences for you: I reconnected with my partner of 8 years now on Facebook and would not have without that platform. 2. I follow a birding group and experience great joy from viewing beautiful photos of native bird species. :)
I agree with you: very often also for me 'rejection' is a very physical feeling. If, reasoning, I'd tend to refuse an experience but still hesitate I normally resolve to trust my own gut feelings. If my stomach pushes me to say 'no' my final decision is a 'no'. And not only - as you rightly observed - it's true that we are all different but is also true, in my opinion, that we all have some sort of universal basic 'healty instincts' and that (non only nowadays but ESPECIALLY noowadays) in order to hit the 'novelty' botton for maximizing the selling of a product, producers of all sort of stuff try to ignore or directly violate our 'instincts' trying at the same time to convince us that ignoring our instincts is 'cool'. 9 out of 10 this is false. Of course is important to remaine alerted in order to be able to recognize the rare cases in which going out of our way - the so called 'confort zone' - is, on the contrary, advisable and adds new content to our life.
I’m actually quite a fan of youtube because I’ve found that it can be very informative. If I want to know how something, for example “how to use my heating system/bread maker/shower”, or if I need a recipe or ideas for diy paper Christmas decorations I can find it all here. I also love to watch people from other countries that I’ll probably never be able to visit and find out what their daily lives are like. I also love to watch things being made and anything from carpentry to pottery or dress making can hold my interest. So that’s my positive experience, however, I quit Facebook in 2014 because it was becoming toxic and I was sick of seeing what other people were having for dinner or endless pictures of their kids, and I don’t do any of the other stuff. 😊💛🏴
Somehow I don't see TH-cam as a social network:) For me, it's more of a search engine that helps navigate through all kinds of content. It's the most creative and helpful platform now! I really liked your expression: "content overdose". It happens to me so often. Especially this year, but I started to realize that and I am now actively trying to quit when I feel something does not serve me and to be more selective, just like you said. I am sorry to disappoint but my experience with social media has not been very positive so far, except for finding some really lovely people in the artist community and that's the only reason I still use instagram. Fortunately I can now add art to instagram from my computer so I was able to delete the app from my phone. I hate being too dependent on my phone. Also, youtube has been more positive for me, since I started my own art channel. I found out about myself that I like editing videos and creating long form video content. I feel like I can connect with other people in a way that fits my personality more.

I all but closed my FB account- just haven't gotten around to downloading all the photos I need. Social media is powerful- but that is a double edged sword. For the most part, I only use TH-cam. I have taught myself soooo many things on TH-cam! Because it can be such a powerful learning tool- I use it alot. Happy solstice!

Your time passes scrolling, watching some fake photos of people you don't know... Actually, I don't watch a regular TV and I am really picky on books I read. My biggest shame - I can't stand reading Dostoevsky. His books are simply torturing me and making me depressed. 🤕 He was a genius, but what to do with my sensitive soul? 🙄😊

As an HSP who watched The Platform and Parasite last year (omg those movies fucked me up for weeks)…. I decided to pass on Squid Games this year lol. I definitely wanted to see it and did watch a 30 minute video spoiling everything because I just love dystopian horror stuff but it always DRAINS me. It was easier for me to digest the main plots points and moments from a commentary video rather than watching several hour long episodes. Another video I mostly agree with. I quit Facebook and Instagram in April 2020 because I was fed up with an algorithm deciding what I should or shouldn't see and being bombarded with useless information. I also didn't want my photography style to be influenced by what anyone else was doing or saying. As for Squid Games, I never watched it either. It sounded horrible and I also very rarely have a Netflix account. I just sign up for a month or two if there is something I really want to watch and that's it. I'd rather read a book or go for a walk with my dog or my camera.
Thank you. In answering your question about positive experiences with social media, for me it’s generally been positive. TH-cam is my main form. I don’t do the other forms. On TH-cam I have found this amazing community world wide who are like me, in terms of personality, interests, values and morals, and even childhood experiences. At times in my life, I have felt that I am not okay or good enough, but I’ve realised with age and reading personal development books etc., that I am okay and good enough. I’m always searching for the answer to ‘why?’ For me, this constant thinking gets me more exhausted than social media. Sometimes I wish I had a button that I could switch off and just ‘be present’. I know being creative can help me be more present. I do limit when I listen to the news, as 99% of the time it is negative. At the end of your videos you say, ‘pukka, pukka’ (not sure if this is the spelling). I was wondering, what does this mean in English? 🙂

Oh, that is interesting. Because my attitude to digital information is just the opposite. I am still very excited about the multitude of information that is available easily. I consume a lot and i love it. I am highly interested in politics, a lot of ,scientific topics, every day inspirations like vegan cooking, diy, gardening. I like to meet people online (like you), listen, get inspired. I like to watch films, documentations, features. So, just for my private use i enjoy a lot, what the internet has to offer. On the other hand many actions related to my professional life have to be done digital nowadays and mostly they are more effective as they used to be. And yes, it is very often close to an overdose, but until today i have a quite healthy sense for the point, when i need a change and there is enough of an analogue world left to be active ...
I also have a black cat, Sombra, which means shadow. We called him Sombrita, little shadow as a baby he was tiny. No he is huge, he grew into his name, Sombra Shadow!
Hi Ana! Omg, I laughed inside myself when you talked about the book you wanted to read and it took you 1 week to get through the first 20 pages. I recognized myself so much! I had 2 books: an introduction in quantum physics and one about the work and life of Marie Curie. I am not a scientific person at al but I am so mysteriously drawn to these subjects... Anyway, i dove into the books, I thought: if I read slow and with attention 😂😂😂 the first one I already gave up after 30 pages, Marie Curie stayed with me till the middle of the book... Damn damn... I have instagram for the artists. Photographers, illustrators, painters,... Wonderful and inspiring but also intimidating at some point. But the pros outweigh the cons. You got through to me about being creative to get through melancholic periods... I must try that because on youtube, before you know it, you get stuck in a spiral of existential videos that make you even more question every aspect of your life. I have been there. Not good! I already promised myself to just keep looking at practical things like how to make a terrarium, how to start cross stitching,... But indeed, I must DO it, without fear of failure... Thank you!! I love your point of view. I only use TH-cam now, and I need to limit social media use, because I like creating more than consuming. With that said, there are so many great channels with many exiting points of view. I feel a new surge of people being way more authentic and real with life, more honest. This media has so much potential - so much potential for beauty. I didn't watch Squid game because the world is so scary in itself. I don't need that right now

Thanks for another video great in its simplicity but full of wisdom. Not long ago, I reached the same conclusion. It is just my hands to decide where to put my attention. I live in UK and here people watch so many crime films and series. I avoid most of them as I prefer to focus in stories that inspire me not the ones that make me feel scared.

I think that social media or media over all make people concentrat more on what thay don't have than appreciate what they already have and achieved. That is a shortcut leading to all sorts of mental health issues and self doubts. I avoid spending hours and hours on FB or Instagram. My thinking about any type of media is that they’re presenting snapshots or anecdotes or opinion instead of a full spectrum of information. I used to consume quite a bit of news until I considered how they have assignment editors who tell them to go drum up a story and I don’t want to base my beliefs and opinion from that. Same thing with social media, people are showing the point of view they want others to see and I believe it’s difficult to get the whole picture from one snapshot.
I love your content! I am not on Facebook much but, I have seen so much good come out of it. I have seen people in my community post that someone has lost everything in a house fire and this notifies us it is time to rally for those in need ❤️. I also have a grade school friend who posted he needed a kidney and because of that post and someone answering it he is alive and doing well with his new kidney 🙂

Hi Ana! Hope you're well :) This year I made the decision to not use social media, especially instagram and FB. I only kept Pinterest for visual inspiration but even that quickly got on my nerves cause it's mostly advertising and shopping related. So, I switched to Google Arts & Culture for visual inspiration (and no ads). I found that I am not just more productive but more original in my work, less concerned with: "who will like this?" "will it be popular?" or "what are other artists doing?". Instead, I find those answers on my own. It's such a relief! ("To find yourself, think for yourself". - Socrates) Many years ago I used to love scary/suspense movies. Recently I have also purged them from my visual diet. It doesn't feel 'good' to be scared or to watch high intensity movies. And I am honoring myself by choosing not to watch or listen to certain things, aka self care. I'm glad you made this video because it's important to bring awareness to what we ingest and give our time to. It all influences us somehow so, absolutely, we must be more selective not just mindless consumers. It's tough work though, to remain mindful of anything that can influence our emotions. Oh by the way!, I did more research on ubtan and I'm happy to share I've made my own personal mix and I'm transitioning off intense chemicals on my face/body products (or just companies that are really good at making me feel like I "need" a product, it's an illusion). I follow you bc I enjoy your channel with its wisdom and thought provoking content and it gets me through my day until I retire in 18 months... then I will travel and disconnect from most media. What a great video and such an important topic! :) so inspiring as always. Watching your videos always makes me feel better. I feel supported in the way that I naturally am. And I think that's an important factor. Sometimes I have this struggle of being inspired by someone on TH-cam etc, but it doesn't really come from a good place... I actually feel worse about myself, about my reality, about the physical means I have or rather do not have after consuming certain content. I used to think that I was petty for feeling this way. But after all there is an endless amount of people on the internet and we should choose very wisely what to expose ourselves to, since for me it inherently involves a certain degree of (subconscious) comparison.

Such timely content. Constantly struggle with the time sucking vortex of SM. However, I have learned to go against the tide of popular 'must see' shows and films. Never like the thought of investing any time in consuming any entertainment that I know I will dislike. Having a very hard time finishing books at the moment too! Far too much choice I think.
Very good video! Loved the “create more that you consume”. I really needed to hear that, because I feel my creativity ceased to exist, since I was/am ( trying to fight it) hours a day on social media.
I am subscribed to a lot of creative bloggers and recently I understood that a lot of content is dedicated to buying stuff. A lot of this unboxing and haul videos. I understood that this videos don't make me creative, don't inspire me, they just make me want and buy more art supplies:/ So I decided to stay away from buying art supplies for a year.
I only did Facebook for about 3 months when my youngest left for college and we had an empty nest!! I really did not like it and quit! I’ve heard people who don’t do Facebook are happier than people who do! I only do Pinterest and TH-cam and find precious people like you!! Hope you have a good night ❤️

Please don't feel sad Ana! I don't use Instagram or Facebook but I like watching TH-cam. I like reading books but have found it difficult to concentrate on reading this year. I gave myself a difficult book to read this year - The History of Western Philosophy! It is a hard read probably above my level of intellect but I am going to skip ahead and just read the chapter on Plato! I do consume a lot of junk media and then feel guilty for time wasting. I am getting better and more discerning with what to fill my eyes and ears with though. I avoid consuming anything violent, cruel or distressing and limit listening /watching the news channels. Hello Ana, my relationship with media is very similar with yours. I also had Facebook like two years, when my brother was living in Brasil. When he came back I just let it go. I quit also watching too much Tv- series, films,.... It is a waste of time. Even with TH-cam I am very selective and I choose like you. I didn't watch Squid Game because I felt like you that it was too dark. I knew that I would get very disturbed because I am very sensitive. I think reality is already very complicated. I found out in one of your vlogs that you have been here in Portugal. I live on an island in the Atlantic Ocean called São Miguel, of the Archipel of Azores. It belongs to Portugal. "Feel free to quit" is really one of my biggest epiphanies in 2021! I was taught to fight for everything. It's also a spiritual approach: If you don't feel aligned with something anymore, let it go. You are making space for new things to come which may be more fitting to you. Maybe your soul chose to experience many things.. it's nice! There is a society stigma that you are weak if you don't fight. I'm so happy i released myself from this stressful artificial thought. It doesn't mean I will get lazy or don't want to do anything anymore. It's just: You want to discover yourself. We are in actuality all free spirits !! :*

About 4 years ago I started to realize that I was overwhelmed and unhappy. I analyzed my life and found my consumption of “social media“ was hurting me. I was on so many things I thought were there to enlighten and entertain, but they really made me anxious and fearful. I peeled away each source over a couple months to nothing. It was an opportunity to reset without someone whispering in my ear on how to live MY life. After a year, I decided to consume again when I found BookTube on TH-cam. I only consume content that supports my desire to be healthy, happy and creative. I admit, I am a consumer of books (not realizing they, too, are “media”- thank you for pointing that out), so I’m not a purist in the sense of zero media, but I am extremely selective about what I allow into my precious personal space.
Your message is so important. One of the most pernicious lies is that we are not “ok” if we are not in the loop. You have given ppl a way to escape the trap (permission, if you will), to be ok with no external influence. Thank you!

I enjoy the new possibilities, knowing their attraction. It’s so easy to watch others and sit… and sit… and watch…pretending this is life. It’s OUR CHOICE, always. I didn’t even have a Tv for about 20 years. But I decided to use and choose media with care, for entertainment, inspiration and support. We are not forced to use, what doesn’t fit…we’re only attracted. I’m also attracted by sweets, especially marcipane…but I don’t choose it for my main food. 😉. I have had both good and bad experiences with social media. I do like following Facebook Groups that are about interests I enjoy. It’s a great way to interact with folks that have similar interests. It becomes my personal news feed of things I enjoy. I’ve also started to unfollow people that have more of a negative influence. So I’ve been working on making social media a more positive place by adjusting what I follow in a more mindful way.

I think one of the best advice that I've heard is to create rules for yourself as to what type of content you want/don't want to read/listen to/watch and stick to it. I gave up watching/reading news about 10 years ago after I read this amazing advice from Tim Ferriss in his book: 4hr work week. It said something along the lines of: if it's important - people will be talk about it. You can pretty much read the headlines on the newspapers in the shop and know what's going on. I've saved so much time and energy by not reading the news. They are rarely good anyway.

Hi Ana, I completely agree with you. Our brains are not equipped to deal with so much information and it so easily leads to overwhelm and depression. I too avoid any sort of violence as it’s not entertaining for me. One fabulously positive aspect of social media is animal rescue. I participate in FB auctions for many little rescues in places like Romania, Egypt and Macedonia. (In fact we just rescued 2 adorable street puppies from Macedonia 🐶❤️). You know that your items/donations are going to feed/neuter/save the animals directly and there is no admin or CEO. You can also click for free food for rescues on various sites. You know that the power of the media's influence over us is strong when it causes us to stop and reanalyze a decision that we have already made. We truly need to work at guarding our personal convictions and not allow ourselves to be swayed. These are excellent points and unfortunately, in my experience, most people don't put enough emphasis on evaluating what is truly beneficial for their lives. Infantteacher1 I recently watched the Social Dilemma and have decided to curtail a good chunk of my social media usage for 2022. It was both eye-opening and frightening, but, we have the power to turn it off!
I feel overwhelmed with social media in a way that it drains me and I need my positive energy for my art and creative work and passions. So I must limit my intake of social media in all forms. I only listen to inspiring or creative TH-cam videos just like the videos that you share here. I like videos that makes me think and that inspires me, that has something good for my future or videos that resonates with me as a human being. As an Empath, my biggest tool I use to cope with the world and with social media is Meditation or doing things I love while meditating. I must do that every day. I go outside in nature by myself when I need to breathe and take a break from TH-cam. I totally agree on everything you say in this video. Thanks always for your inspiring and very valuable videos. Hi Ana, thanks for another wonderful and meaningful video! I too have resisted Squid Game for the same reasons as you. I also quit watching The Handmaid's Tale - just felt surrounded by darkness every time I watched an episode. I try to immerse myself with light rather than dark, and I don't need to succumb to the pressure of others to consume this or that current trend. I quit Facebook several years ago (and didn't miss it), but recently rejoined and regret it-I will be quitting again soon and the same for Instagram (going to overhaul my social media use as a goal for 2022). I think so very much of social media is detrimental to society and the human psyche, and in fact, I see it as largely responsible for the terrible divisiveness in the US currently (and perhaps the world). One positive, however, has been finding your lovely VLOG:) Most of the time I spend on social media in general though is just time wasted and could have been spent on many more productive and positive things. Lastly, I also don't feel the need to finish something just to say I finished it, or to impress anyone. If It doesn't resonate with me, I leave it be and move on.

I have had a lot of health battles the last few years, such as open heart surgery, twice. In those times everyone wants to know what’s happening. But I am much too weak and sick to phone everyone. I can relate to your feelings around the media. My big concern is they are manipulating and attacking our freedom. I am considering quitting Facebook and Instagram. The only thing that is kind of stopping me is that I am part of few groups of Slow Stitching Meditation. Usually I follow something or someone until I learn what I need to learn. About a year ago I realized how much media influences the way I feel or where I put my focus on life. The things I consumed as well as social media was making me so unhappy. I’m on a journey to be more selective in my time and energy. I still have a lot of work to do but it has really helped me so far. Also your videos are so wonderful and peaceful! :)

I was hoping you'd do a video about this ! I liked that you focused more on the "why" than the "how". This is definitely something I struggle with. There are so many books/articles I want to read & movies to watch that I struggle to give one my full attention! FOMO basically .😬 We are about the same age & it's unbelievable how much is at our fingertips compared to even when we were small children!
"Catering to your fantasy self instead of your real one"...this is the key idea, to me. This is a key tool for social media. Good one 👏
Overall I feel the same about social media, but here are two positive experiences for you: I reconnected with my partner of 8 years now on Facebook and would not have without that platform. 2. I follow a birding group and experience great joy from viewing beautiful photos of native bird species. :)
I agree with you: very often also for me 'rejection' is a very physical feeling. If, reasoning, I'd tend to refuse an experience but still hesitate I normally resolve to trust my own gut feelings. If my stomach pushes me to say 'no' my final decision is a 'no'. And not only - as you rightly observed - it's true that we are all different but is also true, in my opinion, that we all have some sort of universal basic 'healty instincts' and that (non only nowadays but ESPECIALLY noowadays) in order to hit the 'novelty' botton for maximizing the selling of a product, producers of all sort of stuff try to ignore or directly violate our 'instincts' trying at the same time to convince us that ignoring our instincts is 'cool'. 9 out of 10 this is false. Of course is important to remaine alerted in order to be able to recognize the rare cases in which going out of our way - the so called 'confort zone' - is, on the contrary, advisable and adds new content to our life.

I’m actually quite a fan of youtube because I’ve found that it can be very informative. If I want to know how something, for example “how to use my heating system/bread maker/shower”, or if I need a recipe or ideas for diy paper Christmas decorations I can find it all here. I also love to watch people from other countries that I’ll probably never be able to visit and find out what their daily lives are like. I also love to watch things being made and anything from carpentry to pottery or dress making can hold my interest. So that’s my positive experience, however, I quit Facebook in 2014 because it was becoming toxic and I was sick of seeing what other people were having for dinner or endless pictures of their kids, and I don’t do any of the other stuff. 😊💛🏴
Somehow I don't see TH-cam as a social network:) For me, it's more of a search engine that helps navigate through all kinds of content. It's the most creative and helpful platform now! And it actually allows creators to get seen and heard. Oh, I learned so many skills here, too 😊

We can find good in media, but we have to chose and pick carefully, because it's easy to lost a lot of time in this research. I'm happy to get access to other countries and way of life, to share. So there is good to find, see your channel !

I really liked your expression: "content overdose". It happens to me so often. Especially this year, but I started to realize that and I am now actively trying to quit when I feel something does not serve me and to be more selective, just like you said. I am sorry to disappoint but my experience with social media has not been very positive so far, except for finding some really lovely people in the artist community and that's the only reason I still use instagram. Fortunately I can now add art to instagram from my computer so I was able to delete the app from my phone. I hate being too dependent on my phone. Also, youtube has been more positive for me, since I started my own art channel. I found out about myself that I like editing videos and creating long form video content. I feel like I can connect with other people in a way that fits my personality more.

I all but closed my FB account- just haven't gotten around to downloading all the photos I need. Social media is powerful- but that is a double edged sword. For the most part, I only use TH-cam. It goes without saying, that I agree with you almost on every aspect. 🙃 I've quit Facebook many years ago, because it seemed a huge machine of fraud, fake images, abuse, etc. Yes, Facebook has certain good aspects but using it everyday it's really hard to get only positive things... Your time passes scrolling, watching some fake photos of people you don't know... Actually, I don't watch a regular TV and I am really picky on books I read. My biggest shame - I can't stand reading Dostoevsky. His books are simply torturing me and making me depressed. 🤕 He was a genius, but what to do with my sensitive soul? 🙄😊

I like your analysis on the pressure to watch popular content in the media and the need to follow intuition. The S.G. was "not for me" either.
As an HSP who watched The Platform and Parasite last year (omg those movies fucked me up for weeks)…. I decided to pass on Squid Games this year lol. I definitely wanted to see it and did watch a 30 minute video spoiling everything because I just love dystopian horror stuff but it always DRAINS me. It was easier for me to digest the main plots points and moments from a commentary video rather than watching several hour long episodes. So it’s def not dumb and was actually really smart to not watch it. Ty for your videos. They’re such beautiful and emotional gems 💓 Happy New Year lovely Ana!
Another video I mostly agree with. I quit Facebook and Instagram in April 2020 because I was fed up with an algorithm deciding what I should or shouldn't see and being bombarded with useless information. I also didn't want my photography style to be influenced by what anyone else was doing or saying.
As for Squid Games, I never watched it either. It sounded horrible and I also very rarely have a Netflix account. I just sign up for a month or two if there is something I really want to watch and that's it. I'd rather read a book or go for a walk with my dog or my camera.
Thank you. In answering your question about positive experiences with social media, for me it’s generally been positive. TH-cam is my main form. I don’t do the other forms. On TH-cam I have found this amazing community world wide who are like me, in terms of personality, interests, values and morals, and even childhood experiences. At times in my life, I have felt that I am not okay or good enough, but I’ve realised with age and reading personal development books etc., that I am okay and good enough. I’m always searching for the answer to ‘why?’ For me, this constant thinking gets me more exhausted than social media. Sometimes I wish I had a button that I could switch off and just ‘be present’. I know being creative can help me be more present. I do limit when I listen to the news, as 99% of the time it is negative. At the end of your videos you say, ‘pukka, pukka’ (not sure if this is the spelling). I was wondering, what does this mean in English? 🙂

And the words that I'm saying in the end are "paka-paka" ("пока-пока") which mean 'bye-bye' in Russian😊

Oh, that is interesting. Because my attitude to digital information is just the opposite. I am still very excited about the multitude of information that is available easily. I consume a lot and i love it. I am highly interested in politics, a lot of ,scientific topics, every day inspirations like vegan cooking, diy, gardening. I like to meet people online (like you), listen, get inspired. I like to watch films, documentations, features. So, just for my private use i enjoy a lot, what the internet has to offer. On the other hand many actions related to my professional life have to be done digital nowadays and mostly they are more effective as they used to be. And yes, it is very often close to an overdose, but until today i have a quite healthy sense for the point, when i need a change and there is enough of an analogue world left to be active ...

Hi Ana! Omg, I laughed inside myself when you talked about the book you wanted to read and it took you 1 week to get through the first 20 pages. I recognized myself so much! I had 2 books: an introduction in quantum physics and one about the work and life of Marie Curie. I am not a scientific person at al but I am so mysteriously drawn to these subjects... Anyway, i dove into the books, I thought: if I read slow and with attention 😂😂😂 the first one I already gave up after 30 pages, Marie Curie stayed with me till the middle of the book... Damn damn...
I have instagram for the artists. Photographers, illustrators, painters,... Wonderful and inspiring but also intimidating at some point. But the pros outweigh the cons.
You got through to me about being creative to get through melancholic periods... I must try that because on youtube, before you know it, you get stuck in a spiral of existential videos that make you even more question every aspect of your life. I have been there. Not good! I already promised myself to just keep looking at practical things like how to make a terrarium, how to start cross stitching,... But indeed, I must DO it, without fear of failure... Thank you!! I love your point of view. I only use TH-cam now, and I need to limit social media use, because I like creating more than consuming. With that said, there are so many great channels with many exiting points of view. I feel a new surge of people being way more authentic and real with life, more honest. Thanks for another video great in its simplicity but full of wisdom. Not long ago, I reached the same conclusion. It is just my hands to decide where to put my attention. I live in UK and here people watch so many crime films and series. I avoid most of them as I prefer to focus in stories that inspire me not the ones that make me feel scared.

My thinking about any type of media is that they’re presenting snapshots or anecdotes or opinion instead of a full spectrum of information. I used to consume quite a bit of news until I considered how they have assignment editors who tell them to go drum up a story and I don’t want to base my beliefs and opinion from that. Same thing with social media, people are showing the point of view they want others to see and I believe it’s difficult to get the whole picture from one snapshot.
I love your content! I am not on Facebook much but, I have seen so much good come out of it. I have seen people in my community post that someone has lost everything in a house fire and this notifies us it is time to rally for those in need ❤️. I also have a grade school friend who posted he needed a kidney and because of that post and someone answering it he is alive and doing well with his new kidney 🙂

Hi Ana! Hope you're well :) This year I made the decision to not use social media, especially instagram and FB. I only kept Pinterest for visual inspiration but even that quickly got on my nerves cause it's mostly advertising and shopping related. So, I switched to Google Arts & Culture for visual inspiration (and no ads).
I found that I am not just more productive but more original in my work, less concerned with: "who will like this?" "will it be popular?" or "what are other artists doing?". Instead, I find those answers on my own. It's such a relief! ("To find yourself, think for yourself". - Socrates)
Many years ago I used to love scary/suspense movies. Recently I have also purged them from my visual diet. It doesn't feel 'good' to be scared or to watch high intensity movies. And I am honoring myself by choosing not to watch or listen to certain things, aka self care.
I'm glad you made this video because it's important to bring awareness to what we ingest and give our time to. It all influences us somehow so, absolutely, we must be more selective not just mindless consumers. It's tough work though, to remain mindful of anything that can influence our emotions.
Oh by the way!, I did more research on ubtan and I'm happy to share I've made my own personal mix and I'm transitioning off intense chemicals on my face/body products (or just companies that are really good at making me feel like I "need" a product, it's an illusion). So, thank you for briefly sharing your minimalist routine because I learned so much about what I didn't know :)

And I think that's an important factor. Sometimes I have this struggle of being inspired by someone on TH-cam etc, but it doesn't really come from a good place... I actually feel worse about myself, about my reality, about the physical means I have or rather do not have after consuming certain content. I used to think that I was petty for feeling this way. But after all there is an endless amount of people on the internet and we should choose very wisely what to expose ourselves to, since for me it inherently involves a certain degree of (subconscious) comparison.

Such timely content. Constantly struggle with the time sucking vortex of SM. However, I have learned to go against the tide of popular 'must see' shows and films. Never like the thought of investing any time in consuming any entertainment that I know I will dislike. Having a very hard time finishing books at the moment too! Far too much choice I think.
Very good video! Loved the “create more that you consume”. I really needed to hear that, because I feel my creativity ceased to exist, since I was/am ( trying to fight it) hours a day on social media.
I am subscribed to a lot of creative bloggers and recently I understood that a lot of content is dedicated to buying stuff. A lot of this unboxing and haul videos. I understood that this videos don't make me creative, don't inspire me, they just make me want and buy more art supplies:/ So I decided to stay away from buying art supplies for a year.
This is a great decision! Our creativity and art shouldn't depend on the consumption of supplies 🌸

I only use TH-cam, I’ve tried Facebook a couple of times but never got on with it. If I lose interest in any of the channels then I unsubscribe. It’s not necessarily because of the channel it’s just that we all change as time goes by and it may not suit me anymore. Great vid Ana 😊🇬🇧

Please don't feel sad Ana! I don't use Instagram or Facebook but I like watching TH-cam. I like reading books but have found it difficult to concentrate on reading this year. I gave myself a difficult book to read this year - The History of Western Philosophy! It is a hard read probably above my level of intellect but I am going to skip ahead and just read the chapter on Plato! I do consume a lot of junk media and then feel guilty for time wasting. I am getting better and more discerning with what to fill my eyes and ears with though. I avoid consuming anything violent, cruel or distressing and limit listening /watching the news channels. Love your approach to reading difficult books, my friend! Recently, I've found it challenging to focus on one long text without being constantly distracted. It's kind of frustrating - to feel how my mind is becoming less sharp largely due to the content overdose..

Hello Ana, my relationship with media is very similar with yours. I also had Facebook like two years, when my brother was living in Brasil. When he came back I just let it go. I quit also watching too much Tv- series, films,.... It is a waste of time. Even with TH-cam I am very selective and I choose like you. I didn't watch Squid Game because I felt like you that it was too dark. I knew that I would get very disturbed because I am very sensitive. I think reality is already very complicated.
I found out in one of your vlogs that you have been here in Portugal. I live on an island in the Atlantic Ocean called São Miguel, of the Archipel of Azores. It belongs to Portugal.

I like it a lot and I like the smell. Some years ago when I was having some dificult Times, going to the beach, breath the sea air and watch the sea helped me a lot. I think beeing in nature helps a lot.

Согласна с тобой) Тоже не смотрела Кальмара и Бумажный дом. Причем про последний у меня подруга недавно спросила и очень удивилась, что я не смотрела. И тут я даже не сразу нашла, что ответить. Проанализировав, поняла, что как и ты, не люблю контент про насилие, мошенничество, преступления. И никакие уговоры блоггеров меня туда не затянут. Вообще сейчас придерживаюсь правила смотреть \ читать \ слушать только позитивное, потому что негативное и так само пролезет в голову, не стоит еще добавлять добровольно.
Лена, вот прям 100% согласна - негативного в голове хватает с избытком. В последнее время эта интоксикация вытягивает все силы...
Бумажный дом только 1 сезон давно смотрела и больше как-то не прельстилась.

I have never had a Facebook (or Instagram) account...by choice! I do not regret this, but in the village in which I live, all community notifications are posted only on Facebook. This has been a real problem for me! However, I remain adamant in my choice to be Facebook free!
