Your “dirty” adjustment techniques are exactly what I do too and it also works! I always adjust bust darts in their length and placement, I also eyeball necklines when I lower them.... as you said, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I usually don’t put zippers when the style isn’t mega fitted and can shimy myself in. Love the red jumpsuit.
I used to hate alternating my patterns but I’ve learned my lesson and now I lovvvvveeeee making changes to the pattern to suit my body. The sewing community is so great about making this normal. I don’t care at all why I have to make my adjustments but I feel super proud when I look at my pattern and see the changes I made, not to mention when I sew it up, how well it fits. More you do it, the easier it becomes and you get to know your unique needs. Another terrific episode! Thank you!
Laura Malley YASSSSS! Me too! I’ve finally realised it’s much more fun to make my clothes fit my body rather than the other way around. Such a great attitude to have and I agree, the sewing community definitely helps 😄 thank you! ❤️🙏
i used to always decorate my back zipper pulls. most women would stop me and say, “your necklace is in your zipper”. but it worked great. I have often thought of putting a zipper in the crotch like my hubby’s flight suits. but then i thought it might look to hookish. i am working on a peppermint jumper right now and i was so proud that i had done a side zipper (not concealed) and an in-seam pocket on the right side. then i went to sew front and back seams to join sides and i realized i had 2 right sides. 😖 now i have to rip out the front and back without the zipper
I love your philosophy on pattern adjustment! It's refreshing to hear such a young woman having distilled it all down so thoughtfully. It took me much longer to sort it out!
Well said Ruthie - we are what we are ! I recently found a new way to lower the bust dart - just draw a box around it, cut out the box and stick it in the new lower position according to where your apex is situated. Really easy and totally works for me. Loving the red jumpsuit.
I had a beautiful Laura Ashley , red velvet riding dress. Loads of tiny buttons down the back. I lived alone , I had to ask the taxi driver to undo my buttons when igot home!
may I ask what your hip/bottom measures were at that time? I want to sew one myself without zipper but wonder if I manage to fit in (also if I adapt the V). ❤️
I just made myself jumpsuit (not this one) and put exposed metal zipper to the back. It has longer "handle" and is easier to unzip. I have to bend my arms quite a bit, but it is doable. Maybe try to change the concealed zip of your black jumpsuit to the metal one so you could wear this too? Also - as metal zip "handles" (I don't know the correct English word for it, sorry) have often a hole in them, so it is possible to add some decorative ribbons or tasselt to them (as surfars have in their suits). I love your videos and your style! Thank you!
Eveli Kaur yes, great idea! Concealed zips are particularly small and difficult to pull up and down- an exposed zip would definitely be much better and you’re right, I use the ribbon trick all the time!
Excellent. Love your keeping it real vlog. I’m delighted someone else’s eyeballs adjustments. I think I visualize patterns in my head as line drawings and I see my body shape in 3D. Somehow I can make that jump from line drawing to 3D and adjust accordingly. 😊
Mary Mc that’s a great skill! I think that’s similar to me or just the fact I’ve done some of these adjustments so many times I kind of know how it should look. Most of the time I’m just completely winging it! 😂
I was just about to suggest that! I have this pattern and don't want this level of frustration to go to the loo so when I get around to making it that's what I'll do.
Great video! I especially love the end, our bodies gives us new techniques to learn, that's brilliant and so cool. Like you said I just want to be comfortable and feel good in my clothes. With this jumpsuit, have you thought about turning the shoulder seams into ties? Would that solve the problem of getting in and out? I'm not sure if it'd work and it could be just more length of fabric hanging to the floor when going to the loo, but maybe being careful it could work?
In the olden days, 60's and 70's (?), we zipped and even buttoned ourselves up the back. I think it is just one of those skills that just needs to be practiced?
Let’s just say it doesn’t matter how long your arms are...if you really need to tinkle, a zipper in the back of the jumpsuit is not going to help at all. Thanks for the chuckle Ruthie, and for the heads up.
Deborah Tyler exactly! I wasn’t sure if it was just my short arms but I agree, who wants to be faffing around with a zip in the back?! At least with a dress once you’re in you can still use the loo without having to unzip, but with a jumpsuit that’s just not practical!! 😂❤️
I found myself putting the tie around my neck..... but in all honest, I hold in my toilet needs to something verging on pain before I would go to the loo!!! 😂😂😂... so I know what you mean!!!...thanks for your hacks! @thenorthern_sewist for my version! 👀👀..... I do love it though! Love watching you!!! 😊❤️👏🏼
Lynne McLeod haha yes, I’ve done that with the tie!! 😂 and I always put off going to the loo when I’m wearing a jumpsuit- it’s just so much of a faff you want to keep it to a minimum! I also find myself explaining to whoever I’m how difficult it is just so they know why I was in there so long 🤣 ah thank you so much 😘

Sewing Jenny Demos ah that sounds like a much better way of doing it! I will definitely try that in the future, thank you 🙏❤️
ooh! do you have a link?
Found it on You Tube "SewToFit" Lowering bust dart for McCalls 7085. The one she demonstrates has waist darts too but you will understand the process.
THANK YOU! I have been wanting to make this too, but hate the zipper in the back. Now I will with your help.
I had a beautiful Laura Ashley , red velvet riding dress. Loads of tiny buttons down the back. I lived alone , I had to ask the taxi driver to undo my buttons when igot home!
Janice Coulson haha oh no! Nice taxi driver helping you out though! 😂

So glad I watched this before I made it! Love the look but the zip would annoy me so much! Keep up the great Vlogs! Xx

Some really helpful and easy to understand tips! Great video
So well said Ruthie and great to see how you adjust things to fit better 👌. Great jumpsuit which looks brilliant on you and I love the red 👍😊😘
Ah thank you Sally! ❤️❤️❤️

Craftwerk Me too, just as in life “winging it!” 😊
What about a closure at the shoulder?
I was just about to suggest that! I have this pattern and don't want this level of frustration to go to the loo so when I get around to making it that's what I'll do.
that's a really good idea, definitely gonna do it! Lol, honestly didn't think about it till now. lol

Marta Sanders love that idea! It would totally solve the problem, thank you! I think I’ll have to try that with the next one ☺️❤️

Rob yN you’re probably right! I’ve been spoilt with easy to put on clothes 😂
I put zips in the side of my dresses - even if the pattern says to put a zip in the back - as I have short arms.
Let’s just say it doesn’t matter how long your arms are...if you really need to tinkle, a zipper in the back of the jumpsuit is not going to help at all. Thanks for the chuckle Ruthie, and for the heads up.

I’m almost done with this pattern. It’s not fitting well…at all
