I just discovered a fix for one of the issues mentioned. You mentioned that the auto tracking of the face forces you to keep your face in the center of the frame, giving you poor composition and too much headroom. The fix: once tracking has locked onto the face, you can use the joystick to adjust the framing and the app will (attempt) to keep your face in that part of the frame to maintain the composition. It's actually a really great hidden trick for those that actually use the tracking feature.
fair enough, I think this will work for vlogging/ selfie filming, but if you place the gibal on a tripod and try and film yourself with the rear lens, it is impossible.... But fair point!!!
@@SamuelSotiega Yeah I'm not sure if it works with rear lens or not. Or how you would even set it up without a helper. I don't use it, but I thought it would be worth mentioning for anyone that does.

There is a way to shoot low like you want it, just not automatically like the other gimbal you compare with. Extend the telescopic, then under the pan motor there a joint where you can bent it up to 90 degree. It's in manual book page 7.
Yes, you are right, sort of, as long as you don't tilt up or make any vertical movement, then the whole things goes AWOL. Like I showed in my OM5 review here th-cam.com/video/bdxrPzKlnys/w-d-xo.html . So, no, this gimbal cannot do an up-down movement the way a properly designed gimbal is expected to do, no matter how you try.. Sadly, this gimbal is so poorly designed it is laughable.
@@SamuelSotiega I think you do not understand physics which is rare for a photographer since you should understand physics. The gimbal works by using the sensor info to generate angle velocity to compensate for the movement. Thus, there are many physics limitations to this 'predictive' behavior. For a cheaper gimbal, the part will have more limitations than an expensive one. So there is nothing related to the design of the gimbal. This gimbal will be enough for normal users. If you want more expensive ones go ahead. But I do not think there is any design flaw here. Just maybe your ability to understand physics is flawed.

I will be honest I bought the OM6 for a very specific reason. Active Tracking!!! It works flawlessly. I use it to record my kids playing sports ie wrestling (while I coach my son) I just set it up on its tripod select him and then I can focus on coaching him knowing the gimbal is tracking him. I also use it to record my daughter cheerleading or dancing. This way I can record her and then still be able to just watch her. This way when she looks for me, she sees me watching her and NOT a dad hidden behind a camera. I have not tried it with “team” sports as we other options for recording (ie hudl for football). PRO TIP: turn off gestures, kids love to wave…LOL
Thanks for the informative video, mate! Gotta say, the Osmo Mobile 6 is perfect for quick and easy shooting, plus sharing those moments on social media is a breeze. However, if you're aiming for professional video shoots, you might have to consider getting a professional camera.

Still most of the thing people are using are content for social media. U upload it to a cloud full sized and that's just one of the options; Specifically an option for full recordings events vídeos after the editing. Still most of content are for social media rn. And i go with it again. I have shoot events with a Iphone 11 Pro Max and a Osmo Mobile 6 and for the quality just clean the camera with a professional liquid and you will record really nice videos just with the HD and 60, 4k and 60 would be like crazy good but normally i stay with the HD. And it's just really good. I am planning to do the upgrade due i have i mic which it does not fit with the osmo 4 but with the osmo 5 or 6. Still as prices are not that much difference u get some upgrades as the zoom, the color, the litter screen to see which mode u are using etc.
I have the G6 Max and the M3 gimbals you mentioned. I also purchased the DJI Osmo 6 - You didn't talk about the titling head you can adjusts on the DJI - You hold it as a flash light gimbal in horizontal mode or vertical. Easier for subjects smaller than you - You can use the gimbal to up and down shots. Left in horizontal or Right in Vertical mode - I agree with the screen rotate is irretating but is avoidable - DJI is samller than the G6 or M3 gimbals - DJI when extended, the hand is nearer to the gimbal controls - When using an extention on the G6 ot M3, hands are further away from controls -DJI is faster to set up than the G6 or M3 for mobile phones only - DJI is physically smalling if want to carry it in a bag. I never carry mine in my pocket - I can use a mobile selfie light on without a gimbal motor issues Nothing is perfect, but it is just tool. A tool is only has good as the person using it. That said, I agree with your points on focus pulling and focus tracking. I have other gear if i want more sophisticated stuff I want to do. It is one of many tools in my tool kit With regards to TikTok, teenager dance videos used to be the thing on it. However, it's not like that as much anymore. My own TikTok called London Open Mic and Music has many different types of videos in it. Same for other creators too
Thanks for chipping in. It sounds like you know what you're talking about. You have a few other gimbals, which makes your decision to use this gimbal and cope with its limitations easier, as you know what to expect and use different gimbals for different situations if need be. But if this was the only gimbal I could afford, I would not want to be limited by so many issues. Yes, it is smaller than the G6 Max and the Crane M3, but when you use a gimbal usually you make a conscious decision to use a gimbal for this or that shot, so in my case (and the video is my personal view, I am not pretending my opinion is the only view) I rather always have a gimbal that does the job the way I am used to. But that is just me. I could have made a video twice as long and talked about other aspects, but I just wanted to highlight the issues I feel someone new might come across and be confused about this OM6 because a typical gimbal does not operate the same way this gimbal does.... But I can see you have very valid points that work for you and your workflow so I am pleased that you have made it work for you...
Mate…the point of a gimbal is to make your life easier when doing creative shots. For very simple stuff like filming in a room it’s fine. But come on…you can’t do a push-in shot or a low to high crane shot? Surely the most basic function of any decent gimbal is to *liberate* your range of movement in all 3 axes? A gimbal the makes me work for it instead of it working for me belongs in the trash. And the follow mode and active tracking on previous models was terrible. Not sure if they fixed it here but when it lost tracking it went nuts instead of doing the logical thing and returning to follow mode. And the follow mode was so bad. It would never return the camera to the original position after moving about.
@@louielondonmedia4819 to you. There’s no defence or excuse for this gimbal. Other makes or similar price points have no problem with range of movement. That’s what a good gimbal does. Why on earth would anyone be ok with manually tilting it on the stick? It still has a limited tilt range and the shots are just as difficult. You shouldn’t have to work around the gimbal for such a basic move. It should move around you. That’s the whole point of having a gimbal! For the om6 i dont know but I had an om4 and 5 and both had terrible follow mode and active track issues. The follow mode would never revert back to the original position after moving about up down left and right. And when the track mode lost the subject (which it always did thanks to the abysmal vertical tilt range), instead of reverting back to follow mode (which didnt work properly anyway 😅🤦🏻) it just went nuts and ruined the shot completely.
@@Hello_there_obi the Zhiyun Smooth Q4 and OM6 are the only gimbals that have the controls near hands when extended. I prefer the Feiyutech G6 Max and Zhiyun Crane M3 I have for most things
There are definitely some legit points in this video about a new DJI gimbal, but it’s definitely not trash, it is just not fit your personal needs as you would expect it.
I specified that we all do things different and for some it will be fine. If you managed to ake it work for you, congratulations, I take my hat off. But you have a very valid point, this is, as all reviews are, my personal opinion.

I recommend you watch some of my recent videos about gimbals. This is a very subjective decision and only you can make it. Do you use phone only or camera too?
He is right, using this gimbal in a horizontal position does not give you a better shot coz your mobile doesn't tilt the way you want. it slides when you move the gimble downside.
Many thanks for this, I've had mine for a few weeks and am really struggling to get it to the angles, and to follow the lines I wanted. I also have the Pocket 2. It is very convenient, but the lens quality is bad. My S22 Ultra has a much better quality not only for photos (which are abysmal on Pocket 2) but also for video (not to mention that i can't shoot 10bits video on Pocket 2) Hopefully, Pocket 3 will address these limitations.

@@SamuelSotiega Good question. Yes for selfie dialogue, but it sure would be nice to follow rule of thirds and use the quality lenses on the back of the camera.

Finally! An HONEST review.. All these other reviews are so full of crap. I’ve asked dozens of video creators about the pay load for the heavier phones and 90% will say oh yes it will work. But in reality it won’t. I’ve found 3 video’s including yours with the truth behind it. I appreciate that! I’m going with the crane M3 after lots of research. Seems to be an all around great gimbal. It should work for how you intend to use it… it all depends on the type of running. It’s not the same a gentle trotting than running down a hill at speed…
You can drastically increase the tilt range by pulling out the extension a little and swiveling the hinge at the top of the extension 👍. Also, it DOES spin the camera around. I have a Smooth 5, but it's too bulky to take when I record b-roll fir Drone video, the primary filming I do. It's pretty basic, but good within a small range of tasks. At least it has an app, unlike the Crane M3, which is great for mirrorless cameras, but not so much with smartphones. Just a counterpoint to your points, which are good, but not entirely the full draw of this one. 😉 by the way I have only tried the OM4 before, but have tried Hohem, Moza, Feiyutech, and about 5 Zhiyun - Smooth 4, 5, Q2,Q3,Q4, plus Powervision S2.

Agree, a lot of great points in the video. Another one that was a bit unfair, however, was that the object MUST be centered. You can adjust where you want the tracked object to be located in the frame. I’ve only had it for a day. This gimbal does have many shortcomings, as mentioned, I can’t emphasize enough. I really want to be able to use the rear facing camera, for example. but what I missed in this video was a better alternative in this same price range. Is this gimbal as bad as it is because it is bad? Or is it an example of getting what you pay for?
@@SamuelSotiega low to high can’t be done. Moving selfie stick head would just work for situations as you said when a tall person is recording a smaller subject.
So I love your reasoning about the DJI mobile 6 Gimbal. I was hoping before you ended the video you would of recommend a gimbal with all the features we’re missing and wrong with the DJI. I recently bought the Dji mobile 6 gimbal but I’m close to returning it. But not sure what to replace it with 🤦♂️.
In this price range, I am publishing my review of the Hohem isteady mobile plus in 2 weeks and If you can wait…. It looks promising to me. Hohem is sending it to me next week. Video scheduled out for November 4-5. If you have a bit more of a budget, the zhiyun smooth 5 is also good. And with a bit more cash, the crane M3 or the feiyutech mini scorp are brilliant… But if you can wait for the Hohem gimbal’s review in 2 weeks, I have a feeling it is going to be worth it…
I have been using the OM6 for a month now. I honesly understand where you are coming from, but it's nothing to cry home about. I trust and use the product (and yes, that includes ActiveTrack) even the gimmicky features. But for the basic functionality the OM6 has been very reliable all throughout.

I received mine a few days ago and I’m baffled by the limited range of motion. I enjoyed your review. I’ll keep messing with it but I’m probably going to return it. The Pocket 2 is so much more portable and does nearly everything i would need this to do.
@SamuelSotiega then again, the Pocket 2 is super fiddly. You must swap the base to use a tripod for crying out loud. Add the smatree charging stick and... you can't have the do it all handle, unless you side mount it, but then you can't use the wireless mic, because your phone is attached. Until they add WiFi & Bluetooth without putting a separate base on it, that makes it no longer fit the case, it is way too much swapping of parts. Don't get me started on wide angle lens, and ND filters with a way too weak magnet, so they fall off, get lost. I have to carry it all in a case, and keep checking all slots are filled since stuff gets misplaced. The official extension was good, except your phone shows in the bottom of the shot when vloging. I have bought the Creator Combo 3x, and always end up sending it back. Way too fiddly to get simple b-roll when you are also flying drones.
@@BlairAir i have a different experience than you with the pocket 2. I attach the do-it-all-handle and never remove it. It is permanently on and I have not experienced any issues with the wireless mic, it works whether I use the phone attached or not…. Let’s hope when the P3 comes out the issues you’re experiencing get solved!!
Similar experience with the Zhiyun Smooth Q3 with it’s wonky operation and limited range of motion. I really wanted to like it due to it’s relatively cheap price, but as a Crane M2 user I just could not get used to its limitations. Unfortunately I could not find anymore Crane M2 gimbals in stock, so I had to get the Crane M2S and I am so happy to get back that higher range of motion.
You do have some points. But all features you're trying to disregard are there so users can have the options on how they would want to film. It's better to have those features and not need them rather than need them but don't have them. I think the OM line is built for casual customers rather than mobile filmmakers.
You have a valid point. We all film in different ways and find different things helpful. I just highlighted aspects of the gimbal I find hard to comprehend, things that most people will struggle with. But like I say at the end of the video, who am I to recommend this or that gimbal? People can make up their mind. I just hope I provide a different angle in a constructive manner with a twist of fun..
Yes but what is the most “casual” move you would try immediately with a gimbal? The low to high shot. Or the push-in shot. Can this gimbal do these basic moves? No! There’s no defence here. For all that money it LIMITS your movement and you have to work around it instead of it working around you. It’s objectively a terrible gimbal because it fails in the most basic functions of what a gimbal should be capable of performing.
While I agree with you about things like spin shots - the most nausea-inducing shots that nobody should be allowed to use - comparing the OM6 with a Crane 3, for example, is not a fair comparison. The Crane 3 is at least 3 times the price (here in Australia), much bigger, much heavier, and even if you don't try to put it into your pocket, it still needs much more space in your backpack or wherever you carry it. The OM6 is much easier to slot down the side of the bag, and let's face it - it does do at least 90% of what most of us do with a gimbal. You want to use the best lens for selfies? Just mount the magnetic clamp the other way around, or turn the whole gimbal around. While not trying to justify my spend on an OM6, it works for me, and I am most definitely NOT a TikTok-er.
Thanks for chipping in. I only used the Crane M3 and G6 Max to illustrate the up/ down movement that a well-designed gimbal is supposed to do and that you can't do with the OM6. I didn't mean it as a side-by-side comparison. As I say in the video, size and weight are a big plus, and yes, I coated it with a bit of a sense of humour (at least I think I did!) but I do feel I made a point that it is compact and you can definitely fit it in a pocket if you want as it is that small. Like everything in life, we are all different and we make things work for us so I am sure there is a tonne of people out there that will love this gimbal. I just highlighted the issues I find with it that I know someone new to gimbals would come across. I hope you noticed that I did show that you can mount the clamp on the screen side of the phone for selfies, it is just that there is always the risk that you damage or scratch the screen. But I am really pleased for you that you have made it work for you!

@@SamuelSotiega 2 days ago I wasn't even looking for a gimbal!!! I happened to be in an electronics store on Saturday and saw the DJI Osmo mobile 6. I thought Wow! What a cool little gadget for so little money. I didn't buy it as I had absolutely no intention of getting a gimbal. However, after I left the store it kept playing on my mind and I realised it would actually be quite a good tool to have. Of course I started all the youtube research and everyone was saying the same thing blah blah blah... so I thought I'd get it the next day... That's until I saw your video...! I thought it was click-bait but you opened my eyes to soooo many things I was unaware of. I realised pretty quickly that Osmo was not for me. In fact it was about an 80% mismatch of what I want in a gimbal!! Glad I came across your channel and even happier you made that content! Thanks so much! 🤜

I had a lot of fun watching your video and I found it quite informative. I also tend to agree with your critics, while they are not so important to my personal use. I personally own a OM5 and I love it because it’s compact and lightweight. And no, I don’t take it with me in my pocket, but I have them in my backpack I have with me most of the time. I’m even thinking about selling my OM5 to get OM6 just for the fact that it’s fully operational in less than 5 seconds and I don’t know any other gimbal capable of that. For the heavy duty stuff, I own a Ronin RS2.
Sounds like you have a workflow in place. The RS2 is a nice piece of kit. I am publishing on November 4-5 my review of the hohem isteady mobile + but although I feel it will behave like a proper gimbal does at 40% less cost, it is not as compact as the OM6. This is the only area where I feel the OM6 is great…

As a user of the OM6 for the last 3 weeks (for at-work content creation), this review is really accurate & honest. GREAT for vertical content, really convenient setup, and useful in-app gimbal modification. But lacks the gimbal-ability expected from DJI users.
The live track description is wrong. You can change the framing of your subject with joystick and it will keep subject. It doesn’t only keep live track subject in center. This is just false. Also gimbal will show in a wide angle shot.
@@puddleduck112 you can readjust the magnetic clip to be further away from the lenses and it won’t show on wide angle shots.that’s using and iPhone 14 pro.

Samuel, thank you so much for this and several other gimbal videos. I was planning an upgrade from my old Osmo mobile 2 to an OM6. However, not having the absolute basic bottom-up panning capability (which was there in the OM2!) is a dealbreaker. I already had the OM6 in my shopping basket and cancelled it again. I am now eagerly awaiting my G6Max.

I think you review it as a more experienced photographer which I respect. However, the face tracking is really useful because when I go out with my family, I would just set it up on the side with an ok angle and track it to my wife or my daughter. Then I can just leave the camera on site to join them. I do agree that this gimble has a limited range of motion and when I first shot with it, it is really hard for me to maneuver it to where I want it to go. It was frustrating sometimes as it would just flip the entire phone and do all type of weird things. As this is my first gimble, I thought that maybe I used the wrong mode or that I don't hold it right. It turns out that it may be due to a design problem and thank you for pointing it out.

I'm not in any rush to buy one even though it would be handy but I'll track the cost for a few months to see if price drops and may I'll over look that feature... Yes, I did a review of the OM5 last year and the same issues remain with the OM6. The fact is that until they change the gimbal's structure, in its current form with a bracket behind the camera,. the same issues will remian. Thanks for the feedback. Alternative gimbal review out on November 4 or 5th and I think, if you are in the market for a gimbal, you might find it interesting.
I watched your video carefully and concur with most of your arguments. The problem is that the OM6 isn't targeted at people like you or I. I've been producing video since the editing was done with three U-Matic machines. I know that good video has to do with having a good script and separate shots with great composition. Not with effects and camera gimmicks. But those are the things that attract beginners. That's how millions of pieces of equipment have been sold (think of the Video toaster, the Videonics MX-1 and more recently the thousands of gimbals, action cameras and NLE plugins that hit the market daily). Once again, good video has to do with good writing (story), good photography and good editing. Great video!

IDK why YT finally surfaced this video now that mine just arrived. I noticed the wobbly-ness of the gimbal movement while trying to see how it actually stabilizes footage (Mimo app not installed yet) and thought maybe I'm just a newbie. The first thing I wanted was to be able to take horizontal footage more easily because vertical footage is already easy to take and my phone stabilizer does plenty. 😩 It's too troublesome to return because the DJI store in my country only refund through store credit unless the product was damaged in transit.

These problems are design problems, no firmware can compensate for badly designed hardware. They know they are selling a turd, they know how to design proper gear. I use a lot of their other equipment and it is awesome. But on this product, they know they are ripping people off (my opinion)
I bought the OM6 to be able to capture myself dancing. A couple of things I've noticed with it. 1. The tracking feature works well in vertical, but in horizontal, it cuts off half my body, so you can't even see the lower half of the dance. So not only is it keeping you centered horizontally like you mentioned, but the vertical centering is even worse for my needs. I wish you could, like you said, choose WHERE you want to be tracked in the frame... 2. I noticed that I can't use my wide angle lens with the DJI OM 6 app. So if I want to get a wide shot, I'm just out-of-luck. 3. I've also had trouble with the gimbal going off on its own and it'll just stop tracking, so you get some weird movement and your subject goes out of frame when you are trying to pan (it just decides it doesn't want to pan any further). 4. I do like that I can use gestures to track, but that's not really breaking the bank if I don't have it.

Ufff,,, that is a hard question to answer. Could I suggest you watch my videos for the zhiyun smooth 5S and the hohem M6 and then let me know what you think?
To get around the tilt limit, I use the gimbal to hold the camera 90º to the left - it gives me what I need to start with a low shot, then rise up; the camera does not run into the gimbal arm. That is not a shot I do "all the time," so it is not an inconvenience to do that occasionally. For all other shots, I haven't run into any other "limits" - it works as expected.
I don't know if they changed the software at some point, but you can use the joystick to keep someone relatively off-center and not only perfectly centered.
I will check. I currently do real estate with my Samsung S22 ultra with the SMooth Q3 and all is ok but the gimbal goes wack when i want to do crane shots or pan up and down cause the phone is tad too big for those movements. i have a Hohem gibmal for my gopro and has given my good service. so i do feel comfortable to make a purchase on any of those two. but i think i will lean towards the Smooth S5@@SamuelSotiega

It is, but if the smooth 5 is the one you are keen on, I'd like to ask you to wait until the end of the month, if you can, it will be worth it. That is all I can say at this moment in time. (read in between the lines)
Such a useful video. I was thinking of replacing my OM3 with this (having lost my OP2 a month ago), but it looks like the shortcomings of it would not give me any advantage over what I already have. Thank you. Could you recommend a better phone gimbal - sadly, I can't afford an OP3!
Can I ask you a few questions? What’s your budget? Do you want something that can do crane or jib-up movement (no restriction of movement) or you don’t do those type of shots? Do you need it to be small portable or a gimbal that is a bit bigger but fully functional is preferred? Once I know these I can give you some suggestions to look into!
Looks to me the same design, with a bracket behind the phone, so you will have the same issues. It is the design itself that is the problem. I will never understand why they keep pumping gimbals with that design. The moment you put a bracket or mounting arm behind the phone you clip the tilting range….
ha ha, I've had my osmo 6 for a few months now and have similar experiences to you. i searched youtube to find out what i did wrong. Couldn't didn't think dji could sell something as bad as osmo 6. Thanks for explaining that it wasn't my fault

so, what is the best gimbal then... I mean the features you mentioned about the app like the dynamic zoom or the spin... I think it’s still nice to have or any other features to help bring out your creativeness... there might be some other gimbal out there that people think is the best but really it all depends on the user and their preference in creating their videos

On November 4-5th I release a review video of a gimbal that is cheaper than the OM6 and I think better than the Smooth 5. You might wanna wait until then.... But the smooth 5 is a decent gimbal, once you work out a workflow and a system, it does what it says in the tin, and that is already quite a feat. Yo te recomiendo que practiques con el smooth 5, es un gimbal decente y la verdad, en mi opinion, muchisimo mejor que el OM6, en todos los sentidos menos en el de portabilidad, lo cual para mi no es importante ya qyue cuando uso un gimbal, lo uso especificamente con una idea o ides en mente, no es una cosa que improvise.
Great review! I bought a DJI OM4 last year and returned it because of similar reasons. It just didn’t want to stay level and I was constantly fighting it. I’m looking to buy a gimbal again and to use it for walk through videos of new construction houses. Do you have any recommendations for a gimbal that can do the following….. 1. Smartphone compatible 2. Extendable so I can switch back and forth between front facing camera for me and rear facing for the walkthrough, 3. Built-in tripod so I can set on a desk and adjust the heigh for stationary videos The OM6 meets these criteria, but it looks like it has the same problem as the OM4 and I don’t feel like dealing with that again.
I would say, wait for a review of a gimbal I am releasing March 23 or 24. If you can wait, I think you’ll find it very worth the wait. That is all I can say…

Having watched this useful video I wonder whether you use a gimbal at all. No, of course we don't stick a gimbal in our pants pocket for a night our with the boys or a trip to the park with the kids but I have found the OM£ to improve the steadiness of my shots. I saw your review of Crane M3 but it has its own limitations with lower shots (it hits the EVF on M50 or wireless mic attachment etc). I just discovered a fix for one of the issues mentioned. You mentioned that the auto tracking of the face forces you to keep your face in the center of the frame, giving you poor composition and too much headroom. The fix: once tracking has locked onto the face, you can use the joystick to adjust the framing and the app will (attempt) to keep your face in that part of the frame to maintain the composition. It's actually a really great hidden trick for those that actually use the tracking feature.
fair enough, I think this will work for vlogging/ selfie filming, but if you place the gibal on a tripod and try and film yourself with the rear lens, it is impossible.... But fair point!!!

There is a way to shoot low like you want it, just not automatically like the other gimbal you compare with. Extend the telescopic, then under the pan motor there a joint where you can bent it up to 90 degree. It's in manual book page 7.
Yes, you are right, sort of, as long as you don't tilt up or make any vertical movement, then the whole things goes AWOL. Like I showed in my OM5 review here th-cam.com/video/bdxrPzKlnys/w-d-xo.html . So, no, this gimbal cannot do an up-down movement the way a properly designed gimbal is expected to do, no matter how you try.. Sadly, this gimbal is so poorly designed it is laughable.

@@SamuelSotiega I think you do not understand physics which is rare for a photographer since you should understand physics. The gimbal works by using the sensor info to generate angle velocity to compensate for the movement. Thus, there are many physics limitations to this 'predictive' behavior. For a cheaper gimbal, the part will have more limitations than an expensive one. So there is nothing related to the design of the gimbal. This gimbal will be enough for normal users. If you want more expensive ones go ahead. But I do not think there is any design flaw here. Just maybe your ability to understand physics is flawed.

I will be honest I bought the OM6 for a very specific reason. Active Tracking!!! It works flawlessly. I use it to record my kids playing sports ie wrestling (while I coach my son) I just set it up on its tripod select him and then I can focus on coaching him knowing the gimbal is tracking him. I also use it to record my daughter cheerleading or dancing. This way I can record her and then still be able to just watch her. This way when she looks for me, she sees me watching her and NOT a dad hidden behind a camera. I have not tried it with “team” sports as we other options for recording (ie hudl for football). PRO TIP: turn off gestures, kids love to wave…LOL

Still most of the thing people are using are content for social media. U upload it to a cloud full sized and that's just one of the options; Specifically an option for full recordings events vídeos after the editing.

I have shoot events with a Iphone 11 Pro Max and a Osmo Mobile 6 and for the quality just clean the camera with a professional liquid and you will record really nice videos just with the HD and 60, 4k and 60 would be like crazy good but normally i stay with the HD. And it's just really good.
I am planning to do the upgrade due i have i mic which it does not fit with the osmo 4 but with the osmo 5 or 6.
Still as prices are not that much difference u get some upgrades as the zoom, the color, the litter screen to see which mode u are using etc.
I have the G6 Max and the M3 gimbals you mentioned. I also purchased the DJI Osmo 6
- You didn't talk about the titling head you can adjusts on the DJI
- You hold it as a flash light gimbal in horizontal mode or vertical. Easier for subjects smaller than you
- You can use the gimbal to up and down shots. Left in horizontal or Right in Vertical mode
- I agree with the screen rotate is irretating but is avoidable
- DJI is samller than the G6 or M3 gimbals
- DJI when extended, the hand is nearer to the gimbal controls
- When using an extention on the G6 ot M3, hands are further away from controls
-DJI is faster to set up than the G6 or M3 for mobile phones only
- DJI is physically smalling if want to carry it in a bag. I never carry mine in my pocket
- I can use a mobile selfie light on without a gimbal motor issues
Nothing is perfect, but it is just tool. A tool is only has good as the person using it. That said, I agree with your points on focus pulling and focus tracking. I have other gear if i want more sophisticated stuff I want to do. It is one of many tools in my tool kit
With regards to TikTok, teenager dance videos used to be the thing on it. However, it's not like that as much anymore. My own TikTok called London Open Mic and Music has many different types of videos in it. Same for other creators too
Thanks for chipping in. It sounds like you know what you're talking about. You have a few other gimbals, which makes your decision to use this gimbal and cope with its limitations easier, as you know what to expect and use different gimbals for different situations if need be. But if this was the only gimbal I could afford, I would not want to be limited by so many issues. Yes, it is smaller than the G6 Max and the Crane M3, but when you use a gimbal usually you make a conscious decision to use a gimbal for this or that shot, so in my case (and the video is my personal view, I am not pretending my opinion is the only view) I rather always have a gimbal that does the job the way I am used to. But that is just me. I could have made a video twice as long and talked about other aspects, but I just wanted to highlight the issues I feel someone new might come across and be confused about this OM6 because a typical gimbal does not operate the same way this gimbal does.... But I can see you have very valid points that work for you and your workflow so I am pleased that you have made it work for you...
Mate…the point of a gimbal is to make your life easier when doing creative shots. For very simple stuff like filming in a room it’s fine. But come on…you can’t do a push-in shot or a low to high crane shot?
Surely the most basic function of any decent gimbal is to *liberate* your range of movement in all 3 axes?
A gimbal the makes me work for it instead of it working for me belongs in the trash.
And the follow mode and active tracking on previous models was terrible. Not sure if they fixed it here but when it lost tracking it went nuts instead of doing the logical thing and returning to follow mode.
And the follow mode was so bad. It would never return the camera to the original position after moving about.

@@louielondonmedia4819 to you. There’s no defence or excuse for this gimbal. Other makes or similar price points have no problem with range of movement. That’s what a good gimbal does. Why on earth would anyone be ok with manually tilting it on the stick? It still has a limited tilt range and the shots are just as difficult. You shouldn’t have to work around the gimbal for such a basic move. It should move around you. That’s the whole point of having a gimbal!
For the om6 i dont know but I had an om4 and 5 and both had terrible follow mode and active track issues. The follow mode would never revert back to the original position after moving about up down left and right. And when the track mode lost the subject (which it always did thanks to the abysmal vertical tilt range), instead of reverting back to follow mode (which didnt work properly anyway 😅🤦🏻) it just went nuts and ruined the shot completely.
@@Hello_there_obi the Zhiyun Smooth Q4 and OM6 are the only gimbals that have the controls near hands when extended. I prefer the Feiyutech G6 Max and Zhiyun Crane M3 I have for most things

There are definitely some legit points in this video about a new DJI gimbal, but it’s definitely not trash, it is just not fit your personal needs as you would expect it.
I specified that we all do things different and for some it will be fine. If you managed to ake it work for you, congratulations, I take my hat off. But you have a very valid point, this is, as all reviews are, my personal opinion.

He is right, using this gimbal in a horizontal position does not give you a better shot coz your mobile doesn't tilt the way you want. it slides when you move the gimble downside.

Many thanks for this, I've had mine for a few weeks and am really struggling to get it to the angles, and to follow the lines I wanted. I kept looking at other TH-cam videos and they make it look so simple, and I thought it was either a faulty gimbal or something I was doing wrong. The up/down segment at 2:20 was most helpful.

I still have an OM4 and it’s still suitable for what I want to use it for. Hope for the Pocket 3 if it comes out later on in the year.
I really hope they do something special with the pocket 3 and I will be dropping quite a few videos about it when it comes out… i love the pocket 2.
I also have the Pocket 2. It is very convenient, but the lens quality is bad. My S22 Ultra has a much better quality not only for photos (which are abysmal on Pocket 2) but also for video (not to mention that i can't shoot 10bits video on Pocket 2)
Hopefully, Pocket 3 will address these limitations.

Finally! An HONEST review.. All these other reviews are so full of crap. I’ve asked dozens of video creators about the pay load for the heavier phones and 90% will say oh yes it will work. But in reality it won’t. I’ve found 3 video’s including yours with the truth behind it. I appreciate that! I’m going with the crane M3 after lots of research. Seems to be an all around great gimbal. While running, can you hold it in selfie mode and run and does it remain stabilized, and how much?
It should work for how you intend to use it… it all depends on the type of running. It’s not the same a gentle trotting than running down a hill at speed…
You can drastically increase the tilt range by pulling out the extension a little and swiveling the hinge at the top of the extension 👍. Also, it DOES spin the camera around. I have a Smooth 5, but it's too bulky to take when I record b-roll fir Drone video, the primary filming I do. It's pretty basic, but good within a small range of tasks. At least it has an app, unlike the Crane M3, which is great for mirrorless cameras, but not so much with smartphones. Just a counterpoint to your points, which are good, but not entirely the full draw of this one. 😉 by the way I have only tried the OM4 before, but have tried Hohem, Moza, Feiyutech, and about 5 Zhiyun - Smooth 4, 5, Q2,Q3,Q4, plus Powervision S2.
You can indeed swivel the selfie stick and get extra tilt range, but you have to keep it static, the moment you move up or down the whole thing goes out of whack because, precisely, you used the swivel to angle the phone, as I show here th-cam.com/video/bdxrPzKlnys/w-d-xo.html at 9.21…
Agree, a lot of great points in the video. Another one that was a bit unfair, however, was that the object MUST be centered. You can adjust where you want the tracked object to be located in the frame. I’ve only had it for a day.
This gimbal does have many shortcomings, as mentioned, I can’t emphasize enough. I really want to be able to use the rear facing camera, for example. but what I missed in this video was a better alternative in this same price range. Is this gimbal as bad as it is because it is bad? Or is it an example of getting what you pay for?
For angle issue (around 5:15) I believe you and use the selfie stick head (stretch 1 inch) and angle it the way you prefer.
And how do you handle going from low to high when the hinge is fixed? But hey, if you made it work for you, congratulations!

So I love your reasoning about the DJI mobile 6 Gimbal. I was hoping before you ended the video you would of recommend a gimbal with all the features we’re missing and wrong with the DJI. I recently bought the Dji mobile 6 gimbal but I’m close to returning it. But not sure what to replace it with 🤦♂️.
In this price range, I am publishing my review of the Hohem isteady mobile plus in 2 weeks and If you can wait…. It looks promising to me. Hohem is sending it to me next week. Video scheduled out for November 4-5. If you have a bit more of a budget, the zhiyun smooth 5 is also good. And with a bit more cash, the crane M3 or the feiyutech mini scorp are brilliant… But if you can wait for the Hohem gimbal’s review in 2 weeks, I have a feeling it is going to be worth it…

I have been using the OM6 for a month now. I honesly understand where you are coming from, but it's nothing to cry home about. I trust and use the product (and yes, that includes ActiveTrack) even the gimmicky features. But for the basic functionality the OM6 has been very reliable all throughout.

I received mine a few days ago and I’m baffled by the limited range of motion. I enjoyed your review. I’ll keep messing with it but I’m probably going to return it. The Pocket 2 is so much more portable and does nearly everything i would need this to do.

Add the smatree charging stick and... you can't have the do it all handle, unless you side mount it, but then you can't use the wireless mic, because your phone is attached. Until they add WiFi & Bluetooth without putting a separate base on it, that makes it no longer fit the case, it is way too much swapping of parts. Don't get me started on wide angle lens, and ND filters with a way too weak magnet, so they fall off, get lost. I have to carry it all in a case, and keep checking all slots are filled since stuff gets misplaced. The official extension was good, except your phone shows in the bottom of the shot when vloging. I have bought the Creator Combo 3x, and always end up sending it back. Way too fiddly to get simple b-roll when you are also flying drones.
@@BlairAir i have a different experience than you with the pocket 2. I attach the do-it-all-handle and never remove it. It is permanently on and I have not experienced any issues with the wireless mic, it works whether I use the phone attached or not…. Let’s hope when the P3 comes out the issues you’re experiencing get solved!!

Similar experience with the Zhiyun Smooth Q3 with it’s wonky operation and limited range of motion. I really wanted to like it due to it’s relatively cheap price, but as a Crane M2 user I just could not get used to its limitations. Unfortunately I could not find anymore Crane M2 gimbals in stock, so I had to get the Crane M2S and I am so happy to get back that higher range of motion.

You do have some points. But all features you're trying to disregard are there so users can have the options on how they would want to film. It's better to have those features and not need them rather than need them but don't have them. I think the OM line is built for casual customers rather than mobile filmmakers.
You have a valid point. We all film in different ways and find different things helpful. I just highlighted aspects of the gimbal I find hard to comprehend, things that most people will struggle with. But like I say at the end of the video, who am I to recommend this or that gimbal? People can make up their mind. I just hope I provide a different angle in a constructive manner with a twist of fun..
Yes but what is the most “casual” move you would try immediately with a gimbal? The low to high shot. Or the push-in shot. Can this gimbal do these basic moves? No! There’s no defence here. For all that money it LIMITS your movement and you have to work around it instead of it working around you. It’s objectively a terrible gimbal because it fails in the most basic functions of what a gimbal should be capable of performing.
I agree, practically DJI just can not hold the mobile horizontally it will fall back randomly, whatever he is explaining is absolutely right.

While I agree with you about things like spin shots - the most nausea-inducing shots that nobody should be allowed to use - comparing the OM6 with a Crane 3, for example, is not a fair comparison. The Crane 3 is at least 3 times the price (here in Australia), much bigger, much heavier, and even if you don't try to put it into your pocket, it still needs much more space in your backpack or wherever you carry it. The OM6 is much easier to slot down the side of the bag, and let's face it - it does do at least 90% of what most of us do with a gimbal. You want to use the best lens for selfies? Just mount the magnetic clamp the other way around, or turn the whole gimbal around. While not trying to justify my spend on an OM6, it works for me, and I am most definitely NOT a TikTok-er.
Thanks for chipping in. I only used the Crane M3 and G6 Max to illustrate the up/ down movement that a well-designed gimbal is supposed to do and that you can't do with the OM6. I didn't mean it as a side-by-side comparison. As I say in the video, size and weight are a big plus, and yes, I coated it with a bit of a sense of humour (at least I think I did!) but I do feel I made a point that it is compact and you can definitely fit it in a pocket if you want as it is that small. Like everything in life, we are all different and we make things work for us so I am sure there is a tonne of people out there that will love this gimbal. I just highlighted the issues I find with it that I know someone new to gimbals would come across. I hope you noticed that I did show that you can mount the clamp on the screen side of the phone for selfies, it is just that there is always the risk that you damage or scratch the screen. But I am really pleased for you that you have made it work for you!

I happened to be in an electronics store on Saturday and saw the DJI Osmo mobile 6. I thought Wow! What a cool little gadget for so little money. I didn't buy it as I had absolutely no intention of getting a gimbal. However, after I left the store it kept playing on my mind and I realised it would actually be quite a good tool to have.
Of course I started all the youtube research and everyone was saying the same thing blah blah blah... so I thought I'd get it the next day... That's until I saw your video...! I thought it was click-bait but you opened my eyes to soooo many things I was unaware of. I realised pretty quickly that Osmo was not for me. In fact it was about an 80% mismatch of what I want in a gimbal!!

I had a lot of fun watching your video and I found it quite informative. I also tend to agree with your critics, while they are not so important to my personal use. I personally own a OM5 and I love it because it’s compact and lightweight. And no, I don’t take it with me in my pocket, but I have them in my backpack I have with me most of the time. I’m even thinking about selling my OM5 to get OM6 just for the fact that it’s fully operational in less than 5 seconds and I don’t know any other gimbal capable of that. For the heavy duty stuff, I own a Ronin RS2.
Sounds like you have a workflow in place. The RS2 is a nice piece of kit. I am publishing on November 4-5 my review of the hohem isteady mobile + but although I feel it will behave like a proper gimbal does at 40% less cost, it is not as compact as the OM6. This is the only area where I feel the OM6 is great…

As a user of the OM6 for the last 3 weeks (for at-work content creation), this review is really accurate & honest.
GREAT for vertical content, really convenient setup, and useful in-app gimbal modification.
But lacks the gimbal-ability expected from DJI users.

The live track description is wrong. You can change the framing of your subject with joystick and it will keep subject. It doesn’t only keep live track subject in center. This is just false. Also gimbal will show in a wide angle shot.

However, not having the absolute basic bottom-up panning capability (which was there in the OM2!) is a dealbreaker. I already had the OM6 in my shopping basket and cancelled it again. I am now eagerly awaiting my G6Max.

Could I point you in the direction of the videos I have made for the Zhiyun Smooth 5S and/ or Hohem M6?
I think you review it as a more experienced photographer which I respect. However, the face tracking is really useful because when I go out with my family, I would just set it up on the side with an ok angle and track it to my wife or my daughter. Then I can just leave the camera on site to join them.
I do agree that this gimble has a limited range of motion and when I first shot with it, it is really hard for me to maneuver it to where I want it to go. It was frustrating sometimes as it would just flip the entire phone and do all type of weird things.
As this is my first gimble, I thought that maybe I used the wrong mode or that I don't hold it right. It turns out that it may be due to a design problem and thank you for pointing it out.

I'm not in any rush to buy one even though it would be handy but I'll track the cost for a few months to see if price drops and may I'll over look that feature... Yes, I did a review of the OM5 last year and the same issues remain with the OM6. The fact is that until they change the gimbal's structure, in its current form with a bracket behind the camera,. the same issues will remian. Thanks for the feedback. I watched your video carefully and concur with most of your arguments. The problem is that the OM6 isn't targeted at people like you or I. I've been producing video since the editing was done with three U-Matic machines. I know that good video has to do with having a good script and separate shots with great composition. Not with effects and camera gimmicks. But those are the things that attract beginners. That's how millions of pieces of equipment have been sold (think of the Video toaster, the Videonics MX-1 and more recently the thousands of gimbals, action cameras and NLE plugins that hit the market daily). Once again, good video has to do with good writing (story), good photography and good editing. Great video!

IDK why YT finally surfaced this video now that mine just arrived. I noticed the wobbly-ness of the gimbal movement while trying to see how it actually stabilizes footage (Mimo app not installed yet) and thought maybe I'm just a newbie. The first thing I wanted was to be able to take horizontal footage more easily because vertical footage is already easy to take and my phone stabilizer does plenty. 😩 It's too troublesome to return because the DJI store in my country only refund through store credit unless the product was damaged in transit.

Have you notified the people who matter like those at DJI? Maybe the device just needs a firmware bump.
These problems are design problems, no firmware can compensate for badly designed hardware. They know they are selling a turd, they know how to design proper gear. I use a lot of their other equipment and it is awesome. But on this product, they know they are ripping people off (my opinion)

I bought the OM6 to be able to capture myself dancing. A couple of things I've noticed with it. 1. The tracking feature works well in vertical, but in horizontal, it cuts off half my body, so you can't even see the lower half of the dance. So not only is it keeping you centered horizontally like you mentioned, but the vertical centering is even worse for my needs. I wish you could, like you said, choose WHERE you want to be tracked in the frame... 2. I noticed that I can't use my wide angle lens with the DJI OM 6 app. So if I want to get a wide shot, I'm just out-of-luck. 3. I've also had trouble with the gimbal going off on its own and it'll just stop tracking, so you get some weird movement and your subject goes out of frame when you are trying to pan (it just decides it doesn't want to pan any further). 4. I do like that I can use gestures to track, but that's not really breaking the bank if I don't have it.

To get around the tilt limit, I use the gimbal to hold the camera 90º to the left - it gives me what I need to start with a low shot, then rise up; the camera does not run into the gimbal arm. That is not a shot I do "all the time," so it is not an inconvenience to do that occasionally. For all other shots, I haven't run into any other "limits" - it works as expected.

I don't know if they changed the software at some point, but you can use the joystick to keep someone relatively off-center and not only perfectly centered.

I will check. I currently do real estate with my Samsung S22 ultra with the SMooth Q3 and all is ok but the gimbal goes wack when i want to do crane shots or pan up and down cause the phone is tad too big for those movements. i have a Hohem gibmal for my gopro and has given my good service. so i do feel comfortable to make a purchase on any of those two. but i think i will lean towards the Smooth S5@@SamuelSotiega

Looks to me the same design, with a bracket behind the phone, so you will have the same issues. It is the design itself that is the problem. I will never understand why they keep pumping gimbals with that design. The moment you put a bracket or mounting arm behind the phone you clip the tilting range….

I think it’s still nice to have or any other features to help bring out your creativeness... there might be some other gimbal out there that people think is the best but really it all depends on the user and their preference in creating their videos

On November 4-5th I release a review video of a gimbal that is cheaper than the OM6 and I think better than the Smooth 5. You might wanna wait until then.... But the smooth 5 is a decent gimbal, once you work out a workflow and a system, it does what it says in the tin, and that is already quite a feat. Yo te recomiendo que practiques con el smooth 5, es un gimbal decente y la verdad, en mi opinion, muchisimo mejor que el OM6, en todos los sentidos menos en el de portabilidad, lo cual para mi no es importante ya qyue cuando uso un gimbal, lo uso especificamente con una idea o ides en mente, no es una cosa que improvise.
Great review! I bought a DJI OM4 last year and returned it because of similar reasons. It just didn’t want to stay level and I was constantly fighting it. I’m looking to buy a gimbal again and to use it for walk through videos of new construction houses. Do you have any recommendations for a gimbal that can do the following…..
1. Smartphone compatible
2. Extendable so I can switch back and forth between front facing camera for me and rear facing for the walkthrough,
3. Built-in tripod so I can set on a desk and adjust the heigh for stationary videos
The OM6 meets these criteria, but it looks like it has the same problem as the OM4 and I don’t feel like dealing with that again.
I would say, wait for a review of a gimbal I am releasing March 23 or 24. If you can wait, I think you’ll find it very worth the wait. That is all I can say…

No, of course we don't stick a gimbal in our pants pocket for a night our with the boys or a trip to the park with the kids but I have found the OM£ to improve the steadiness of my shots. I saw your review of Crane M3 but it has its own limitations with lower shots (it hits the EVF on M50 or wireless mic attachment etc).
