The Beach Boys went from surf rock (all their albums up until 1965), to art rock (Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days and Summer Nights), to musical masterpieces (Pet Sounds, SMiLE), to weird lo-fi (Smiley Smile) to soul (Wild Honey), to jazz (Friends), to proto-indie (20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up), to yacht rock (Carl & The Passions, Holland), to new wave/synth-pop (Love You), to disco (LA Light Album), to weird futuristic pop (1985 self-titled), to Mike Love's vanity projects (Still Cruisin', Summer In Paradise), to shitty country cover band (Stars & Stripes), and back to art rock (That's Why God Made The Radio).
I wouldn't call Today! and Summer Days prog by any means, especially the former which is largely mediocre in my opinion save the singles and Good To My Baby. Other than that, my thoughts exactly. In fact, I'd go even deeper: Pet Sounds is borderline classical, (Smiley) Smile is psychedelic rock, Wild Honey is R&B inspired and Friends is jazz-inspired. By far one of the most experimental bands of all time, mostly thanks to Brian Wilson of course.
@@SomeonesOpinion I actually liked Today! but I agree, I wouldn’t call it prog either now I think about it. I’d call it art rock. Pet Sounds and SMiLE definitely inspired prog rock though.
@@davidnissim589 Absolutely agree that Pet Sounds/Smile inspired prog rock; I wouldn't call Today! art rock either. I don't see much artistic merit to most of the songs, it feels like mostly filler. I will say that you can hear traces of Pet Sounds in "Good To My Baby" and "Kiss Me Baby"- hell, even on Rhonda and "Do You Wanna Dance?". The good songs are classics but the rest are just boring filler to me, a shame because most Beach Boys album tracks up to this point were on-par with the hits. I have no such slander for Summer Days though, a classic album.
I’m so glad that he talked about Fallout Boy. They changed styles (even their vocalist) so much I assumed they had an different singer before they became poppy.
I loved Centuries when I was in middle school, but yeah, that song is def "generic pseudo-revolution rock" like a lot of their more recent stuff. I do like Uma Thurman though, it indirectly got me into surf rock lmao.
Can't tall if you're joking? When tf did they change vocalist? Lol. Pretty sure it's all Patrick and yes their sound changed but I still like it. This video is basically just this guys bad takes on bands.
I'm just shocked Panic! wasn't further up on the list. As a fan of P!atD, FOB, and MCR, the latter two had much more linear changes, as in from rock/punk that continued to inch closer and closer to pop. Panic! at the Disco, meanwhile, is like some kid at a toy store, from Baroque Emo to Beatles-esque folk to Pop Punk to Britney Spears Synth to Frank Sinatra Pop to Theater inspired trumpety pop. Idk, maybe that's just me, but Panic! is like the band personification of an identity crisis.
The Go Go's changed their style big time, as they started out as a punk band, a hardcore punk band! Then they came out with pop hits like 'We Got the Beat', 'Our Lips Are Sealed', and 'Vacation'.
KISS went from hard rock from 74' to 78', disco/pop from 79' to 81', metal in 82', glam rock from 83' to 89', grunge from 92' to 97', back to hard rock/pop in 98' and them metal from 09' to 2012 KISS is a survivor brand
@Panasonic Blu From the Glam era, you can look up Lick it Up, Heaven's On Fire, Get All You Can Take, Crazy Crazy Nights, Reason to Live, Hide Your Heart, Forever and Little Caesar. Those are the main ones I remember. Not their best era, but not so terrible.
One song I feel like gets forgotten a lot by A7X is 'Not Ready to Die'. It was the easter egg song for Call of the Dead in Black Ops 1 Zombies, but is AMAZING.
MCR actually released Danger Days to promote Gerard's new comic which, surprise; was called Danger Days. The characters that the band played in the music videos were based off of real characters in the comic. Before they broke up, they were working on a new album called The Paper Kingdom, which was said to be the darkest album the band would have released. Yes, darker than Bullets, darker than Three Cheers, and even darker than The Black Parade. Also there's nothing wrong with Gerard being happy. He's had a hard life and has struggled through eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, anxiety, and if you haven't already guessed, sever depression. And he's still getting hate because he isn't as hot as he used to be, even though he's healthier and happier than ever. People can't seem to get over the fact that not everyone will forever be attractive. He's earned his right to be happy
Yeah, Gerard deserves his happiness. And everything he's ever done is inspirational and I want to be like him when I'm older (I'm just some random teenage emo boy). I'm happy for Gerard and it's not in anyone else's place to be upset with him. Just because he's not as hot as he used used be he's still Gerard and his smile is still contagious and adorable An album darker than bullets? I wish they had released that, it would've been so cool! It's sad but i respect all of their decisions and im happy for them!
It wasn’t a big change, but the Beatles sure changed from signing love songs to Physcadelic and rock songs. I personally say they improved with that choice
I agree. They did get better. When they first started out. They basically the first boy band ever. Not putting em down though. Cause I love all there earlier stuff too. Bit they did get better as the years went by.
He was really tough on Danger Days, but it's actually a really great, interesting album. It has its poppier moments, but it's fucking *MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE* ! Did people forget that this is the same band that released "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" only two albums earlier? I'll be damned if that's not one of the most pop punk songs on the planet.
I definitely didn't hate Danger Days, and there are some songs on it that I really like, but I didn't like it as much as the earlier stuff. Definitely wouldn't call it a terrible album. It's still far more interesting than the new albums by older bands like 30STM, PATD, and FOB@@michaeledwards6683
True, true. Their mainstream albums were great, but for me, their best album was Waking The Fallen. But that's just a matter of opinion of course@@khoshekh5668
Honestly, I 100% agree with the Pantera one. They went from screaming throughout their whole songs to the best metal band ever. And that is why they are my favorite band.
they changed because they didn't want to repeat the winning formula or be stuck playing the same all the time. a normal band has a huge hit with "she loves you" and makes a record called "she loves you" with that one opening side A, and 9 filler songs that are mostly the same, then they milk the "yeah yeah yeah" formula for at least five years before trying something new. a normal band would have stayed being the mop tops playing "yeah yeah yeah" songs until the early 70s, then they would have tried something different. (probably disco). the beatles were doing something very different only two years after "she loves you" and "I want to hold your hand".
There is the reason why many people hate pop music. Music can change some real problems in the world, but pop is just "ooh baby i love you" type of meaningless shit.
@@tylerargabright1228 Yeah Bring Me The Horizon's "amo" still has great lyrics and (most of) the songs are definitely not "ooh baby i love you." There's "nihilist blues" for example.

Motley Crue changed a lot too. Their first album was punk, their second was more heavy metal, their third was classic glam, their fourth was hard bluesy rock and their fifth was back to fast heavy metal again.
Their self-titled album was a lot heavier, basically a fusion of groove metal, funk metal, and grunge (you can tell what year it was made in), then Generation Swine was industrial rock, and New Tattoo was glam metal again.
@@CFoss09 have you listen to the breakdown from down with a sickness, that is one of the most nu metal things out there. You can’t find shit like that in hard rock.
Linkin Park had a bit of a return to form with Hunting Party (My favorite of their later releases), but man that last album before Chester died. Heard 2 songs on it and thought "yea this isn't for me." "Cross Off", the song Chester did with Mark Morton from Lamb of God on his solo album, was pretty awesome, though.
True. It went from thrash metal to radio metal to garage metal and then a lame ass attempt at sounding like thrash again. Though Load/Reload had some experimental shit on it, some of it almost sounding country. But then also badass songs like Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn.
It's weird, but I like almost all their albums. Each one for it's own twist and style. Load and Reload were not Master of Puppets but it was good for on it's own. Shit even St. Anger had it's small moments...ugh those drums ruined everything....Death Magnetic and Hardwired were similar, like slowed down Killem All. Like those phone and computers made for old people. Same idea just all the icons, buttons and numbers are bigger so you can see it better.
Fintile 2012 this is legit. I don't think Metallica has a single album without a few enjoyable moments. Even Lulu has some badass riffs, mainly on "Dragon"
Not only BMTH early music is radically different to their current sound, but a lot of the in-between stuff (Like There is a Hell and Sempiternal) sounds really different than both different to their early deathcore sound and their pop sound nowadays. Of course Metallica also fluctuated between different things through their career but I don't really think the contrast between those individual "eras" of Metallica's sound is as big as the individual "eras" for BMTH. Just guessing Steve isn't really that familiar with BMTH?
The Beatles are #1 from Love Me Do to "yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog´s eye" to Helter Skelter to "she´s so... HEEAVYYYYYYYYYYY" in a span of like 4 years
Yeah, they pulled it out really well. Some would say it was mainly because rock and pop were on their infancy, but I would say it was also because they went on the opposite directions most bands go today: the Beatles went from soft to heavy; from pop and romantic ballads to hard rock, psychedelic, metal, avant garde, blues, proto punk etc. Most bands today, however, do the opposite and start from hardcore to become pop-ish, which doesn't sit very well with most fans.
@@MrAlepedroza exactly, even if they got to be there very early in the game, still, no one else did what they did, there were many bands back then and none bother to push themselves like they did, they kept evolving, even their psychodelic/all you need is love phase was just that, a phase, and once again they were the best at it, most of their songs from that phase are still great and dont feel gimmicky unlike many one hit wonder bands that just sound like a gimmick of that era, and after that they made their most experimental and influencial work. But yeah I cant think of a famous band that started in like pop rock and went harder, not that the Beatles were hard rock but thats the point.
MCR kinda did that thing where they put changing and growing up into music. And that’s not bad, though a little odd, they did a really good job of doing it
I agree, it was definitely my least favorite album of theirs but I still hold a high amount of respect for it. And it was obvious they would go down that route.

Slipknot: 1999: nu metal with a hint of rap 2002: Very Slipknot 2004: Alternative Metal 2008:Slipknot 2014: Sad depressed Slipknot 2019: New Slipknot sound
Slipknot in fact started out as very interesting, Mate Kill Feed Repeat is an amaizing album. With the first singer there were less hip-hop elements, but it was ultra heavy. If I remember right bitchslap on MFKR even has jazz elements to it. The self titled record has a bit industrial feeling to it because of the DJ parts, some songs seem like techno combined with metal. Although they cut back the electronic element later with Iowa.
MEDVE1978 yeah I agree. They somewhat made their own sound during their self titled. It’s weird when they kicked Anders and added Corey and Sid everything changed especially with Sid on turntables. Keep in mind they had Craig but he was more or less the sound technician. I guess they were just looking for the sound they needed for the rest of their career, b/c whatever sound they were “looking” for was found. I’ve loved all of their albums but their self titled album just has a place in my heart
5:11 yes they were groundbreaking, but Green Day was even more groundbreaking because Fall Out Boy was influenced by Green Day, and some other modern punk bands were influenced by Green Day
Yeah, but Green Day isn’t Fall Out Boy. Fall Out Boy brought stuff to the table that Green Day didn’t, even if Green Day was their inspiration. That sentiment goes both ways though. Just because one was inspired by the other doesn’t mean their music should be evaluated in the same way. They offered a different sound from one another, even if it was still in the same genre and style.

I loved Centuries when I was in middle school, but yeah, that song is def "generic pseudo-revolution rock" like a lot of their more recent stuff. I do like Uma Thurman though, it indirectly got me into surf rock lmao.

Amen
I can't find that song Stevie t played what's it called
Yeah, Gerard deserves his happiness. And everything he's ever done is inspirational and I want to be like him when I'm older (I'm just some random teenage emo boy). I'm happy for Gerard and it's not in anyone else's place to be upset with him. Just because he's not as hot as he used used be he's still Gerard and his smile is still contagious and adorable

Honestly, I 100% agree with the Pantera one. They went from screaming throughout their whole songs to the best metal band ever. And that is why they are my favorite band.
The Beatles should have been included. They went from Mop Top, to Druggie psychedelia, to rock
100%!
they were always rock since the beginning, but I understand what you mean.
The Beatles just changed with the era and their age really.
they changed because they didn't want to repeat the winning formula or be stuck playing the same all the time. a normal band has a huge hit with "she loves you" and makes a record called "she loves you" with that one opening side A, and 9 filler songs that are mostly the same, then they milk the "yeah yeah yeah" formula for at least five years before trying something new. a normal band would have stayed being the mop tops playing "yeah yeah yeah" songs until the early 70s, then they would have tried something different. (probably disco).
the beatles were doing something very different only two years after "she loves you" and "I want to hold your hand".
And then seperates wow
MCR changed because Gerard quit drugs and alcohol. That's why he's happy now

I feel like BMTH changed way more than Metallica did. Sure Metallica fluctuated a lot, but in the end it was always some form of metal.

Most bands today, however, do the opposite and start from hardcore to become pop-ish, which doesn't sit very well with most fans.

MCR had some metal influences on their first record, and on their second, thank you for the venom reminds me a lot of tornado of souls
Their first album sounded like 90s mid-western emo, like The Get Up Kids and Cap'n Jazz.
Stevie T: Metallica has changed the most
Robert (bassist): STOMACH
(Stevie t inside jokes)
Lol I get it
Opeth
From deep growling of Progressive Death Metal to Prog Rock but yet still amazing band.
Fiuuuuuckkkk yeeesss
From 'Oops, I smeared Pink Floyd all over my death metal!' to 'Mikael Åkerfeldts King Crimson tribute band'
But yet
they were awesome my favorite track was ending credits, witch wants you to dance
You should do a part two and mention The Beatles, The Doors, Maroon 5, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Pink Floyd.
Muse went from distorted heavy dark stuff in showbiz and origins of symettery to space rock and synth stuff in simulation theory
Yep hah
I prefer their old stuff, tbh
I like starlight
Muse changes on every album. It's their thing.
thank you for not ripping too hard into LP..... that wound is still festering for some of us...
"No band has changed as much as Metallica has throughout the years"
The Beatles: Hold my beer.
The Beatles only released albums for like 7 years, so yeah, pretty crazy.
Naaaah. No matter how much they "changed" they've always retained their core style and sound
@@JustGresh From Please, Please me to Magical Mistery Tour... just wow.
@@shannyapreeya4878 Eeehm...yeah, that's called identity. Shouldn't be that bad or limiting, consedering that nowdays every artist looks for its own, since there aren't many with it.
@@dmpp47 ummmm that's the point of this video. The bands have changed so drastically they're not even themselves anymore. So no, The Beatles don't belong on this list. There's a difference between evolving and selling out.
Dude, this list was fucking awesome! 9/10 of these bands was my junior/high school years (the earlier music of these bands)
Stevie, the music you talk about is a little bit of light in my life. Thanks
First bands that come to mind, when talking about change... Opeth, In Flames
In Flames kinda became more washed down and more "radio friendly" sounding, but they're still melodic death metal, imo.
@@2ljuicebox compared to their roots, more like alt pop rock lmao
In flames has changed a lot. So much that I don’t think I’ve found anyone to be satisfied with their entire body of work (though to be fair I think that is often the case with bands who have been around for a long time). I personally didn’t hear them for the first time until Reroute to Remain, and that’s what got me interested. I went back and listened to their older stuff and enjoyed it, but R2R was still more my style. I hung on for a few more albums, but I lost interest after Sounds of a Playground fading. Only two members remain from when I found them.
In flames for sure.
In Flames sooo freaking on this list >:( i hate their newest stuff....and loved the old one
The Pantera riff with your lyrics killed me. I'm still laughing..
The moment he said “it’s Pantera” I actually laughed...and then I realized he wasn’t joking😨😨
even me while I searched it and actually fucked up when I realized he wasn't joking
Great video Steve !
The that 70s show joke killed me !!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Axl n I have often been compared as each other when he was thin n hot in the 90's
He went from Donna on 70's show to Mama Cass...
I actually didn't even know that the song high hopes is from *PANIC!* at the disco XD
