  • Ready to learn about some Herb Basics? We got you! This is the first video in this series.
    There are two categories of herbs, soft and hard. Basil, Cilantro, and Parsley are considered soft, while Rosemary, Sage and Thyme are considered hard. There are more herbs included in these categories, these mentioned are just the most common.
    At the end of this video, you’ll learn how to wash, dry and store these soft herbs for future recipes. We’ll cover prepping hard herbs in a future video.
    What you’ll need:
    Cutting board, sharp knife, paper towels, salad spinner, zip bags, Sharpie, and a glass jar (Ball’s Wide Mouth works really well).
    Basil is treated differently to Cilantro and Parsley. Basil doesn’t like the fridge, so it’s best stored in a glass jar with water on the countertop. Cilantro and Parsley do well in the fridge after they’ve been rinsed, dried, wrapped in a paper towel and stored in a zip bag.
    Bonus, by eating these herbs, you get the health benefits too! Just make sure you check in with your doctor if this will cause any contraindications with your medications.

    Thank you for such a clear and concise video! I am new to growing basil and parsley and didn’t know how I was going to clean and store the bounty that my two plants are producing. This was very helpful!! 🌱🌿

    Thank you so much. Love this video about cleaning herbs. I had a crisper and gave it away because I thought it was only for the head lettuce and I’ve become allergic to it so since I couldn’t make any salads with it I gave it away.😢 Now I’m going to buy one.😊❤

      You are so welcome! Thanks for watching. The salad spinners come in smaller sizes perfect for herbs!

    Can you put the basil through the salad spinner like the cilantro? Or is that too rough?

    • @kalahealthandwellness
      @kalahealthandwellness  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching and asking. You can use the salad spinner for that as well, works best if you have lots of basil! I was going to make pesto this week and I would have put it in the salad spinner but we used too much basil through the week.

    Hi! Thank you so much for the information, very helpful. Any insight on proper drying for parsley and cilantro without a salad spinner? I imagine just a ton of paper towels. 😄 Thank you.

      Hi Kristen, Thanks so much for watching. That is a great question. My recommendation after washing the herbs well, bunch them up by the stalk, hold them by the stalks with your dominant hand, lightly beat them over your non-dominant hand to shake the excess water off them, then arrange 1-2 paper towels in the colander, place the herbs loosely in the colander, take another paper towel to pat them a bit, leave it on the herbs and allow them to air dry. I may have to make a video for this. Thanks again for asking. Happy healthy cooking to you!

      @@thedouglaspodcast Thank you 😊I hope the herbs enjoyed the ride! I recently had it replaced with the same model. I had that spinner for 7 years and it needed to rest in peace. www.tiktok.com/@kalahealthandwellness/video/7295063658734882094 Here's link to the new one that I have. Hi great video on washing the leaves. How would you recommend to wash actual roots? I bought some herbs that came in root form and the package recommends washing before use. I was hoping you had some helpful advice to wash them. Thanks

      Hi Kala, yes I saw the video before I commented. If I overstand you correctly you are saying use the same method you used for cleaning the leaves to clean roots as well. Thanks for sharing.

      @@skylarcarter Hi Skylar! Yes same way. Fill up big bowl with water and shake the roots in the water. You’ll see the sediment sink to the bottom of the bowl. Keep rinsing, discarding the water, and refilling the bowl until you don’t see any more sediment on the bottom.
