This is easily the most beginner friendly breakdown of Roll20 that I've seen so far! Pleeeaaase do the version from a DM's perspective. Both campaigns that I'm in have started using Roll20 while we play remotely, but we just use our D&D Beyond character sheets that are open in another tab. It's already made and it's really simple to just toggle over. But one for the DMs who are new to using Roll20 that's as accessible as this one was would be such a huge help!
You can actually use a chrome extension called "Beyond20" which links your DnD Beyond character sheet to Roll20. You could directly roll on your attacks on DnD Beyond that way.
@@ashutoshmohapatra7320 I know for sure some of us won't want to download something when we can just move to the very next tab, hahaha. If we planned on staying a digital campaign, maybe, but I think we'd all rather just move to the next tab to use the layout we're most familiar with for now. But that's cool that that exists! Also, all of us use real dice. Rolling digital dice is way less fun and really takes away from the experience for us.
Things you can put in chat to roll for ability checks: /r 1d20 + any modifiers (for checks) /r 2d20kh1 + modifiers (rolling for advantage) /r 2d20kl1 + modifiers (rolling for disadvantage)
I would be interested in seeing the GM side, I have run a few games with roll20 but you never know if you missed something... unless you read tutorials I guess.
Btw you can drag in your spells, weapons, equipment and Warnock invocations from the compendium and just put them into the sheet and it will do it for you. Hope this helps someone :)
The SRD compendium click & drag feature makes *some* of the pain go away. Getting the group to contribute so you can make the compendium work for you...? So good...
We just started a Roll20 campaign today, and this is by far the best tutorial on how to get a character made and how to use the sheet that I have seen. And as an added bonus, I learned about Beyond20 through the comments, streamlining everything! Well done Davvy!
I watched this video even though I have 2 ongoing roll20 campaigns going on and found the solution to the "constantly rolling with advantage problem", thanks davvy
Wow Davvy! You made a tutorial about Roll20 that didn't take 2 hrs to explain. I applaud at thee. Now give us some sweet education as how to DM in it so that we all roll 20s like you
dude not gonna lie I desperately need you to make that dm's guide one, I've been using roll 20 for about a year as a player and didn't know all the stuff you can do with spell cards, this was super helpful, and I'm mega excited to learn more
Love the vid, but I have to say charactermancer can be very helpful, despite its flaws, here's an example: youre making a half-orc barbarian, simply go to the charactermancer, pick halforc, then pick barbarian. it'll automatically present you with the race features anf skill profeciency choices of the class (choosing from a drop down box). On the equipment tab if you choose to start with class starting equipment it also gives you the choices. If the other tabs are unnecessary after that, simply finish using the charactermancer, and whatever you have input before is already in the sheet. -Rage? check -Battle axe & javelins? Check -Relentless endurance? Check -Brutal Critical? Check -Halforc profeciency with intimidation? Check -any other profeciencies you chose? Check each with their description (if applies) and in the correct place, hell even the starting pack of your choice and the equipment within it. Sure it isn't amazing without buying more content but it saves you from manually inputting the menial basic stuff.
Wow. I am shook. I didn't think you could speak slow enough to make a tutorial this easy to follow; then this video blew me away. What an absolutely amazing tutorial! Such a great job, Davvy! This is going to help so many people :D You the best! As a preference, I still use the charactermancer before editing manually (to save time + effort). Especially if creating a caster. That's just preference though.
I would love a follow up of this targeted for DM's. Planning to make a campaign using Roll20 for some time now to give my normal DM a chance to play for once, but figuring out maps and such is daunting and slow progress. This was a very nice and comprehensive guide, so I look forward to such a follow up for DM's. Keep up the good work, good sir!
Please do make that video on DMing for Roll20. I’d like to start an online campaign some day soon, and your guide was the most new player friendly video I’ve seen about Roll20. You explained everything really well, thanks for the awesome video!
The compendium also has a ton of items, which come with attack stats for weapons, auto-AC calculation for armor, and macros for quite a few stat-boosting items.
I don't know who you are, or what you do (Probaly DnD stuff funny enough) but i subscribed and liked just for this video because it was so well made. Thank you for your help. -Random guy who refuse to spend all his money on DnD stuff to get expansions
Not sure if you knew but most of the basic stuff can be searched on the compendium tab and dragged onto your sheet. That adds it and all it's macro stuff automatically. It is very helpful.
you can drag stuff from the compendium onto a character sheet. so search for searing ray -> drag -> it'll auto-populate the spell (or the item, proficiency, etc). This is great cause it'll also populate attacks / ac+initiative calculations, which helps for new players.
Hey bro thanks for this vid has really made roll20 easier to understand and will definitely have to give my account another go also LV ur channel bro hope u are staying safe
Okay now I've been enlightening to the fact that that character sheet thing even exists I've never known in all my years of using roll20 and trying to make games by myself but that was a thing I just kept using Google docs to keep track of everything and thought that the character sheet thing was a paid for thing that people who bought the product got had no idea how to use it this will be very useful for my moving forward with things
If you do own all the content character mancer is really nice. I use it as a DM to keep my infrequent PCs sheets leveled. It's also really nice if you want to whip up a NPC with PC levels, or if you want to experiment with optimization and leveling through different builds. That and the drag and drop MM is really what keeps me on roll20 as a DM. Dynamic lighting is neat too, and adds a lot to dungeon exploration. You can also drag and drag every mundane item, which is really nice for weapons and armor. I think all the magic items outside of XGE are in there too.
HEY DAVVY. Get educational again, I wanna see this from the DM's perspective! I've been floundering, getting it to work, but consider making another vid!!!! This one just turned out so well. I have used it numerous times for numerous groups
If anyone is shopping for different virtual tabletops, Roll20 is, I think, pretty easily the best free option and probably the best option if you are using modules. That said, if you're running a homebrew campaign of any kind and don't mind throwing down a one-time $50, Foundry is vastly better and I absolutely recommend it.
When you are putting an attack cantrip like Fire Bolt on your sheet, be sure to change the level progression under the attack section of the spell to be “Cantrip Dice”. That way it will auto roll multiple damage dice when you reach the appropriate level. Use “cantrip beam”for eldritch blast only.
Armour class is not actually calculated manually, it's calculated automatically based on your dex if you have no armour, and if you use items from the compendium which give you armour class then it will incorporate that. There are options in the options tab for changing how all of this works so that you can have automatic tracking of Unarmored Defense or similar things.
Me and my friends use dnd beyond and owlbear rodeo for the maps. If we found this out earlier we could have used this. Although 2 of the players only uses smartphones, I don't know how mobile phone friendly roll 20 is compared to dnd beyond. And we managed to finish a full campaign with two of us only using phones. In our next campaign we pooled in some cash so our dm can unlock races\subclasses\feats and share the content among the party.
there's also map tools , however , even if it gives you way more options, you need to do everything yourself, from writing the macros(or import them from the community) and preparing the maps
to echo most of what was said: I just started using roll20 for my group during distancing, while also being quite new to the system. This will be a massive help, in making the dicerolling less akward. (sofar we used beyond/form fillable sheets and made individual rolls) any more tips like this for DMs would be welcome, i co-DM with another member of the group and I can use every help I can get once he finishes his storyarc and it's my turn again. And I doubt I can use my minis and big old sketchblock anytime soon. Great tutorial, thanks!
Just like the spells, you can just drag a lot of things from the compendium into your sheet to save typing it all up, including items and language/armor and weapon proficiencies
Hey thanks, Chappy I'm a new DM and just got all my friends into and before things kept us from meeting in person and one of my players wants to DM and is having a hard time using roll20 so I sat down over discord to try and help I will be sending this video as well to continue to help my new DM with Roll20 again thank you so much Chappy I really enjoy all your videos.

You can also!!! Download beyond20 browser extension, to roll straight from you character sheet on dnd beyond! OR... if everyone doesn’t want to download something, just use the “beyond importer” script they also have people’s characters sheets get imported in a few easy steps!
Trying to play d and d online because people in my country don't really play it and this vid is a godsend, hope you make the em version of this so I can actually get my friends to play it since we can't get the hard copy stuff
I played with the free version for almost a year without any issues at all. The only reasons I went Pro were because of Dynamic Lighting and API support. I do agree with the Charactermancer thing. OH NOOOOOO
Shhhh, it’s actually really great content!

/r 3d6 + modifiers + 18 (adding a constant such as optional crit rule)

Yes, but only the base ones, so i recommend to double check in case one might be missing on casting a cool spell like necrotic bell
This helps me! Cheers
This is hands down the most comprehensive and BRIEF roll20 explaination. Thank you.
The SRD compendium click & drag feature makes *some* of the pain go away.

Over the past few days i played my first 2 games ever of DnD on roll20 and had so much fun
