A quick note about cutting my finger. It turns out its impossible to thumb through cards with a finger covered with gauze and painters tape, so after realizing this I stopped and finished recording the last part of that opening later after the bleeding stopped.
At 17:45ish, I appreciate you bringing up that $10 of bulk is not as spendable as a $10 card. I feel like it's not always obvious to new MTG players; anything that isn't worth their time/energy to liquidate, is not money.
Spot on: "Repacks are a way to sell cards that would be otherwise hard to sell." Same as sealed product. Most people wouldn't pay retail for what's in the average booster, so making it a lotto ticket is the only way to get people to rationalize the purchase.
"I didn't know they dated cards back in 2011"- card says 10 July 2010... apparently Seth still struggling to read. Never change Seth, never change we love it.
And the fact that the first ever foil card is also dated - Lightning Dragon from Urza's Saga prerelease promo, one whole expansion before they started doing foil cards. I should know because I own the card. It was my first official time getting into MTG after introduced to MTG during Stronghold/Exodus in Tempest block.
Out of interest, did you order the repacks in your own/MTG goldfishes name? It looks like the cheaper packs came from stores and the more valuable ones came from individuals, which makes me wonder if theres a chance that being a known content creator has an impact on what you get, especially from the individual sellers who are more likely to notice
That $1K repack looked stacked for sure. I wouldn't trust that at all if they didn't work to obscure who was buying. The ones up to $50 looked pretty legit though, about what I'd expect.
everything below the 1k was just ordered off of ebay so they should be accurate, its very unlikely for an ebay seller to get the name seth X as his buyer and just guess its him or something, and have good reviews.
@@jlaw131985 Wizards has eliminated Kaladesh references going forward. They may reprint the cards, but they are changing the name of the plane to Avishkar. Kala, can carry negative connotations, so they renamed it.
My friends and I used to do an ante league where we bought any 6 boosters and 10 of each basic land to build 40 card decks and then over several months play these deck against each other with ante. After 10 losses, you could buy another booster and one basic land. Repacks were a lot of fun for this, though we bought them from our LGS, $1 for 11 common, 3 uncommon, and 1 rare. Obviously, we knew these were just bulk trash, but they made for some amazingly interesting decks.
As an Old School player, I'm super jelly of that beta Counterspell hit. Nice score! Mark Poole is my favorite Magic artist, and Counterspell is just a historically important Magic card, so that is like an amazing amazing hit.
Might have made sense to talk a little more about Jeremy's $1K repack. He's well known and well respected for his high end repacks. That opening is typical of the value. They sell out immediately every time they go on sale and everyone always gets more than what they pay in face value. Like the Beta Counterspell, though, they're valuable material that would take 6 months to sell to the right buyer. If he had infinite time and carprofen, he never make these, but he's willing to take a 25% "loss", because he probably bought it from some at 60% (because that person couldn't find a buyer).
A friend and I used to purchase a few of the cheap 1 dollar repacks at a dollar store every week and do a sort of super budget sealed. Tonnes of value if you just want to play a few silly games.
Just saw the Portal Starter kit pulled. Had to come down here and say that while I, sadly, learned players at the time really disliked Portal, its what got me hooked. My mom saw it in a toy store back in the stone age and got it for my dad. Ive been playing ever since. So many good memories
Seth made a blood pact for those last two cards, lol. Also, I predict the next "Unboxing Video will be about the sealed product from the $1000 repack. *Thanks for the Content* !
I liked this video, it was cool to see the different tiers of repacks, the 1000 dollar one had 2 really cool singles, that was the highlight for me. but all pretty interesting to see and breakdown the prices. cool video Seth.
13:00 Are you joking me? This is 6/6 for 4 mana. In this expansion standard was 2/2 for 3 mana, and 3/3 for 4 mana. This thing is huge. It doesn't matter that opponent could put some random 2/1 rebel from hand. Masques had stuff like Daze and Snuff Out so spells were powerful but all creatures were really small.
I genuinely can't tell if you're being serious or trolling - but as someone who was playing MtG competitively on a weekly basis, I can assure you that Wumpus was still trash all the way back in 1999
A store near me decided to stop selling singles, so they shuffled all of their stock and made "dog boosters", that they sold for $1. There was a lot of trash, but since their WHOLE STOCK was in there, I saw ppl pull fetches, shocks. I pulled a Morophon and a 2012 christmas card
the rares in the 1st packs were all legends cards, not good ones, but still legends cards. Also, that's a DOPE blood moon telecaster behind u, where u get it??
I love these sorts of videos because I always want to get repacks and I never do so this video lets me see what comes in them from my favorite magic Creator and I don’t have to spend any money!
Pro-tip on the finger cuts, buy some Liquid Bandage, no need to go around with annoying bandages, it does dry a bit hard so careful when handling cards. It's like $3 for a bottle.
@MTGGoldfishUnboxings You had sort of asked why the cards are arranged with some facing backwards, and the answer is because it prevents you from seeing the cards within (both outward-facing sides are card backs). If someone is creating these repacks with random inserts, they'd need some way to retain the contents anonymity once they're packaged up. And then ideally, the completed packs would also be randomized before shipping orders.
My friend and I opened a bunch of 400¥ repacks in a tiny magic shop in Tokyo a year or two back. Terrible value, but 400¥ for 100 cards was enough for us to throw together 4 commander decks to play around with. Basically, like 5$ spent for a great night of brewing and playing commander with draft chaff. I don't think repacks are ever worth it for value for all the reasons you mentioned, but if you treat them like chaos draft and you get enough of them it can be fun.
I had a friend. Well 2 for this story. 1 on both side of this. 1 was hooked on these. Years ago. Like prior to Magic Online. The cards displayed were in the packs. He opened 2 of the power 9 and about 25 duels. The other friend would come to trade and didn't care about the value of the cards. Quantity or quality was his game. I founded out a year later or so that he did repacks. When he traded down for cards he put them in stacks. Common, uncommon, rare. This was prior to Mythics. Cards in the stacks he never went back to check prices on. If they went up because they were being played then the customer got a good deal. I had hanging out with him doing a $10 repack session and some of those cards are worth pretty decent today.
Don't think about repacks as gambling for value. Think of them as a fun way to get random cards and expect to lose money on them. Maybe include some friends and build decks out of repacks for some casual games
A story from our community on something similar too repacks. There was store owner that was pretty cool and he made a "repack" draft with a price of fifty euros per person. First pack opened by a person I know two food chains, an omniscience and some other cards priced 50 euros and up easily. Turns out he let his girlfriend pick out every card with no knowledge of their price, just a list of what colors need to be in a pack.

Getting like 3-4 collection starter boxes from reputable sellers, and mixing in a bulk rare purchase will net you a lot of self made booster packs :)
I feel like with all the products wizards releases, you could make a $5 repack full of only promos, foils, rares, and mythics and still be making so much money selling packs for $5. My LGS has had a page full of Garruk's Gorehorn foil in the showcase frame in their $.25 binder for years.
Plot twist. The sellers recognized your name and had a feeling you were gonna make a video. So they filled your order with bangers to drum up more business from the people who watch so they can go back to filling it with bulk.

I’ve gotten lucky with those before, but yeah, they’re kind of frustrating sometimes. Buy singles!
