- On September 11, 2001, a tragic event unfolded as the World Trade Center was attacked, resulting in the loss of over 2,996 lives. Among those affected, nearly 500 individuals were from Long Island. Many of these individuals came from the South Shore, Oakdale, Sayville, Ronkonkoma, Bohiema, and Bayport. In response to this profound loss, the community initiated a meaningful project known as the “Sayville Common Ground.”
Through the collective efforts of dedicated local residents, the Sayville Common Ground was established as a lasting tribute to memorialize the events of 9/11. It serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of the tragedy on Sayville, the South Shore, and the nation.
The tragic events of September 11, 2001, affected individuals from multiple Long Island communities, including Oakdale, Sayville, Bayport, Bohemia, and Ronkonkoma. Some of those lost are remembered below-
