- The Prom follows Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winner James Corden) who are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma's predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. A musical movie is honestly not even about the story, it is about the music.
I had 0 clue what the story was about, BUT I was sucked in as soon as I saw the cast starring in this!

you could probably look up a plot for the musical !! but a quick explanation is that a prom was denied because the protagonist wanted to bring her girlfriend (and indiana is v homophobic so no surprise there), word gets out to these broadway stars and they fly out to help out and put on a prom for everyone! regardless of sexuality or identity. it’s quite a nice story :)
Except for the fact that they’re unlucky actors and go to Indiana to perhaps gain back their popularity but it backfired and they all go on this incredible musical journey. It’s hilarious and an amazing musical

Such a mood, one of my friends, who's bisexual was called to the principal office because a prefect found out she had a pendrive dedicated to LGBTQ+ stuff. A lot of Asians are still conservative about this stuff.

Except for the overarching narritive of the film being that it's okay to pressure your partner into coming out of the closet to homophobic parents in high school. A lot of kids would get thrown out of their house if they did the same.

I think the critiques are gonna hate it. I agree with the message, but the quality just feels awful. First they tell the whole story with the trailer. Second, its not original and its cheezy and overmelodramatic. Third, the acting its tone down because it doesnt know if it wants to be a light comedy story or a wanna too hard make you think story. And last, it follows the cliche structure of every teen movie. Its probably gonna be trash, I just want you to know that I hope I'm wrong, because I dont want it to be trash, but because of what I just said, I think its going to be trash

When I first found out The Prom was gonna be made into a movie by Netflix I would’ve never even imagined it would look this nice. They put more budget in this than I anticipated and im even more excited for it to come out.

I remember crying at the end because this whole movie was just so relatable on so many levels (not the whole 'prom getting canceled' part but rather the 'homophobic people make my life hard' part). People should really learn to start treating LGBTQ people like normal humans and not like people who are "odd" or "special".

Why am I crying halfway through the trailer? I am a boy from Asia and I know how much it hurts to not be able to tell your parents who you really are. This torture inside won't end even when I worked my way to study and work in Sydney, Australia. I was only telling my parents that I don't like girls when they came to visit me once. Considering that it's supposed to be a film about the acceptance of differences, why does it look like a film about the ruthless intolerance of others who have different values? It looks to me as though all the characters who aren't on the same page regarding same sex relationships, are being made fools of. I guess real tolerance is accepting the fact that everyone is entitled to have their own beliefs. Right? Just asking.
Meh, I would take almost any other musical over this one.
During a year in which joy is fleeting and more often than not overpowered by the negativity of the news and social media (the latter of which has gained an unnecessary and unhealthy amount of pessimism and hate), this is just the sort of joyful relief we need.

There’s also a lot of restrictions for one boy/one girl still in some (usually small) towns. Although they might not always get banned it’s still harder/they might have to talk to someone in the admin

I’ve only seen part of this so far, but ITS AMAZING! The dancing and singing is INCREDIBLE and the characters are so adorable and kind! Emma seems super sweet, and I’ve already cried watching this (and that’s coming from someone who hardly ever cries at movies). This is one of the BEST movies I’ve ever seen!

as a teen who went to prom solo with a group of friends, i wish I had content like this growing up. maybe I would have asked myself that burning question a lot sooner and started college a little less confused.

It's set it 1900 or 1901 and there are two girls, Anna and Ariadne, who are in love but it's the 1900s and Ariadne is engaged to be married to some dude that no one in the fandom likes.

If you re schrolling through the commebts wondering if this is any good .stop here and go watch it. I usually hate musicals i forward through the singing and dancing but I enjoy every minute of this. Cried a little and laughed alot . This definetly what I call a feel good movie. The kind you regret watching alone half way thru but can t stop watching so you keep going knowing you ll show it to somebody one of these days . Enjoy :)

Ah! I get why the guys have black tux’s in the first prom. It’s showing how they want prom to be stuck in it’s ways- meanwhile Emma’s prom the guys are in colorful tux’s.
