Devin Vassell had really solid defensive potential his first three years in the league, now he has turned into a no.1 scoring option with a Cam Johnson type offensive threat beside Victor. but he can still be a really good defender

All we need from Jeremy is increase his 3-point shooting average. Even just a league average is good enough.
    He can play small forward.
And then get a PG that guards like Murray.
Add a PF that can shoot and defend like Lauri.
It is good enough to compete in the future.

The biggest problem is there are to many people commenting that do not know basketball. Yes Sochon is going to be imperative to the success of this team. He is 20 yrs old just like Wemby. This microwave mentally generation. Thinks he should come in knowing everything. Years 3-4 for him and 2-3 for Wemby will be very different than what you see now. Great segment. People who don't watch the Spurs dont realize that Jeremy has maybe the toughest job on the team outside of Wemby. Wemby gets to stay in the middle and block shots. Sochan guards the best opposing player every possession. Often he switches from one player to another so he can start a possession guarding KD, then switch to Booker, then switch to Beal, and stay with every single one of them. He is one of the true can guard every position defenders in the NBA. And he's 6 months older than Wemby. He's never going to be worse than he is right this second. Sochan is coming to get everyone

I feel like the Spurs are missing a shooter, a 40%+ 3&D guy… if they can get a PG, even better, but if they don’t, Jones is good enough…

Enjoyed the video. Posting to say that the Spurs hid Parker on the worst offensive perimeter player for his enitre career. Manu was a gambler on defense, he won more than he lost but he was often out of place. Both were willing to take a charge and both would gamble for steals.
In the Duncan era Robinson, Duncan, Bowen, Green, Leonard and their rotation of centers and wings really anchored the defense.

This team is going to be undervalued and underappreciated the same way every team Lebron has ever been in. The difference is that no one will break up this squad and they will grow together. The NBA is in trouble. Its just a matter of time

  • @citizenscapital2458

It was true. Sochan and Vassell, were a lil butt hurt when Wemby arrived with all the fan fare and enormous ability. Prior to Wemby, the Spurs were slanting towards building around Vassell and Sochan's unique, but still budding abilities.
Now Sochan is a role playing around Wemby, as the center piece. Remember, while Sochan was selected #9 by the spurs, he was a 6th man on that baylor team. He came out of college early so his calling card was his ability to be a value utility guy, which included making passes, finding the open man, assisting and playing defense. Sooooo, he knows how to pass the ball.
Someone got to him and redirected him from how he was playing early in the season. In time, you could see that Wemby was growing in his displeasure of the spurs playing low I.Q. 🏀, led by Sochan. Consistently not making the correct 🏀 play, as a basketball player is low I.Q. basketball.
Sochan, Vassell and Keldon Johnson were playing selfish, low I.Q. basketball. Remember, it was only last year Johnson was awarded a 4 yr/$80M contract, becoming the highest paid spur. Vassell just got extended @$124M prior to Wemby's arrival.
Due to Wembys increasing BAD body language on the court and starting to loaf back on defense, because Pop was permitting BAD basketball, Pop's hand was forced.......ENTER Tre Jones back into the lineup to provide fundamental, high I.Q. basketball play. Keldon Johnson to the bench. Vassell playing around Wemby instead of coming down the court attempting to be the featured guy.
So what is known now at the end of the season is that Wemby as a 19 year is the spurs best player with the highest basketball I.Q. on the team.
Sochan should focus on defending, rebounding and hitting the open shot, when he is open. He should not be FORCING offense as he so often does. He should be a dbl/dbl guy every night.

Sochan gets hate for his defense, but Pop wouldn't have put Sochan on the other team's best players if he was bad. Later in the season there was more standing around, but then we find that Sochan has been experiencing ankle/foot pain and that explains most of his mobility loss. Spurs have the best training and athletic center in the NBA and likely we will see a healthy Sochan for next season.

Great take, Wemby and Sochan are two elite defenders. Add Topic in this year's draft to boost their playmaking and defence as well, with Vassell still being young and a potential great scorer, and then a versatile 4, that starting line-up will be insane. Some key role players off the bench, and you potentially have a dynasty, with Sochan and Wemby being just 20, Topic is 18, and Vassell 23.

And he's not just a defensive stopper, he's tough. Well, not in the Draymond kind of character 😂 but just doing his job that some never noticed, even how he positions his body to guard the opponent's best player is just unbelievable, annoying them sometimes.
And I like the fact that he worked so hard to improve his 3pt shots.
Really a good contribution to the team even though he's not the go to guy in team scoring.

The comparisons to Rodman are fair. Sochan has a motor. He is relentless. Sometimes a little reckless. But he's version 2.0. He isn't a head case like Rodman and offensively, he's light years ahead. Rebounding should get better as he gets stronger.

4:50 Calling Tony Parker a "defensive stalwart" is just so incorrect. He was easily the weakest defender pretty much every starting line-up he was a part of during his tenure with the Spurs, and often his "defensive" goal when going against a great point guard in the playoffs was to negate their offense by matching their scoring output. Even calling Manu a "defensive stalwart" is a reach, but it's almost not worth mentioning because of how much more egregious that label is when applied to Parker. People who warrant mention as San Antonio defensive stalwarts during their championship years, other than Duncan & Leonard, include Bruce Bowen, David Robinson, and Danny Green.
I kind of don't understand what the goal of this video was, and I'm not just saying that because of this one mistake. The video isn't breaking down Sochan's defense, or how he has or might work with Wembanyama on that end of the court (other than some very broad "watch out for these guys" statements). Sorry to be negative, but it was disappointing to click on a video about the Spurs' defensive potential moving forward just to have over half the runtime devoted to a random collection of "remember how good these guys were/are at defense?" snippets. Especially during the strangely long discussion of Jrue Holiday, who doesn't even play the same positions as Sochan and isn't really a natural choice for projecting what type of defender he could become. I understand the point was to make it clear that defensive stoppers are important, but, besides being an obvious take, doesn't fit the title of the video.

This is an awesome take. Gotta agree with you. And the way I see it, aside from Wemby and Sochan, they would still need at least 2 more great lockdown defenders to increase their chances of winning the loaded Western Conference. If they somehow will be able to get either Alex Sarr and/or Donovan Clingan in the 1st round of this year's NBA Draft -- these are 2 bigs with great defense (and offense) and then add up Ryan Dunn in the 2nd round, then there's no doubt the Spurs' defense will carry them once again straight to the top just like the old times!

I thought the same during Sochan’s rookie season (great effort, lots of potential). But I’m quite disappointed watching him now. No, he’s not s good passer or PG. That’s not his role. But he’s not a good shooter, cutter or off-ball player either. Everytime he runs a fastbreak, it’s a gamble whether he can make a lay-up or just does something weird. If he was such a great defender, the Spurs should still have an OK def rating with Wemby off the floor. But it’s a disaster. Just going for the Rodman look doesn’t make you, well. Rodman.

❤I am an 11 year Spurs fan. (Spurs is my life)
I saw below a spurs fan suggesting trading our 7th pick to the Magic’s Isaac. I love this move but I doubt Magic is letting go with their wonderful future Isaac just in exchange for a 7th pick this year consider how bad this year top 10 prospects are. (This year 1-10 are similar to previous year 13-23) While Isaac is a genius all nba defensive level player with one of the best PF body, who can also shoot the ball. Think about the odds of this year seventh pick being better than Isaac?? Nah.. most likely not.
Nevertheless, I agree that player like Isaac is the most needed addition the Spurs need. Having Isaac instead of Sochan at the 4 is the KEY TO WEMBY HEALTH. Why is that? Not everyone think of this. But to tell the utter truth, Wemby is very often by himself defending two guys under the rim every single night. It’s already a relatively dangerous (injury provoking) task for him to play Center position regardless of all scenarios. But Wemby now always shoulder up the pressure of defending more than one people within the paint by himself. And all the hustling rebound works and jumping works as well as defending enemies heavy Centers. Wemby needs his help for such “basic health” matter. Sochan is great defender only when he is guarding enemies 1-3 position stars, but not against 4-5. We can watch replays and check the defensive statistics of him guarding PF and C positions, he pretty much has the worst defensive number among starting PFs. Why is that, that’s because of Sochan’s 6”8 height and mediocre bounce, physics, wingspan, and lateral motors and weight.
Now you might understand what I mean. From this we can see getting long quick player who can defend really well within the paint area and ideally can also shoot the 3s is the most important key to help on Wemby’s health, we don’t want him always shouldering up the whole team’s defensive liability and pressure. Wemby is a non heavy a bit fragile 7”4! He would get injured!!!😢 that’s for real.
And from this, we can see how important Spurs defensive playings are for Wemby and his short term long term health. Therefore actually not only PF position, our second biggest need is of same importance regarding health, we need good strong defensive 1-3 position players (along with Sochan at 3 or take Sochan to bench if he is better than him).
This is crucial cus individuals guarding well will relieve most of the burden and pressure on Wemby when he is playing 5.
I truly think Wemby’s health is bigger than whether or not the spurs have a superstar point guard.

I've watched well over half of the spurs games this season. Sochan has holes, just absolutely massive leaks, particularly offensively. There are times where I want Pop to pull him over to the sideline and pick stick'um on his hands, a la The Replacements. But he's also regularly tasked with defending the opposing teams best offensive weapons. He sometimes makes mistakes on defense. He's particularly weak on transition D, but in half court he's been better than solid. A lot of that is going to change as he gets older. You can see the progress from last year to this year.
I don't know if I would argue he's going to be the key to unlocking a championship, but I would absolutely agree that he has the potential to develop in to a top tier defender who flirts with all defense nods. The problem is going to be whether or not, in a 5 out offensively driven era of the NBA, his defense is going to be enough to overcome his lack of offense. One of the things that has happened in the last 20 years as the game evolved, no even average team has truly dead weight offensively on the floor any more. Top tier defenders still have to be able to shoot to provide the space necessary for your best offensive weapons to operate, and sochan's jumper is sketchy at best. You regularly see Sochan's defender sag into the paint to effectively double wemby when sochan has the ball on the 3 point line, frequently daring him to shoot. That is going to have to change.

I think there are many factors for that, but the main one has to be that they are too freaking young. They have positions where one mistake undos everything they do right, and also the bad defenders are TERRRIBLE, Malaki, Devin and Keldon have had big minutes and they have been so so bad. Add to that that we don't have a second rim protector and that's expected. This is a young team, they lose by 30 multiple times when they started. No one knew how to play off Wemby. Wemby had no restrictions on him as well so he did wild stuff regularly. If you're not seeing Sochan value, go back and watch the last Suns match and tell me KD wasn't hurt by Sochan guarding him. You don't always see impact immediately, sometimes it takes a year or two to really see things click. If you want proof look at how the Wolves were not good defensively last year with the same roster and how much better they got this year. And yeah their defense is awful when Wemby sits cause Sochan sits with him and they bring Zach Collins and Cedi Osman, the worst defenders you can have to replace them and they lose by 10+ points in 5 minutes. They need to draft Flagg, Sochan is not the Man, It is what it is if Sochan was the Man the Spurs would at least won 1/2 their games. I just call it like I see it.
