    The biggest thing I hate about how Brooke was treated is that she wasn’t learning from a proper teacher. Abby wasn’t a contortionist yet pushed Brooke to bend and stretch her body not knowing the true mechanics of it. Had Brooke learned from a contortionist or proper mentor I don’t think she’d have faced as many issues, which is just awful.

      @charc3345 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Yes, thank you for this comment. So many people are afraid that contortion will ruin your body, but that’s only if you are being incorrectly trained and aren’t given rest days.

      I could’ve sworn that Abby was more so a gymnastics coach hence why in not all but a lot of their dances all the girls are doing some form of gymnastics and contortion moves.

      @@tiamarrow6366 yes. her favourite style (and what she's best at teaching) is acro. however, acro is not contortion - smn abby has yet to realise. abby actually only really teaches flexibility in the legs of her students; she clearly knows hardly anything about contortion as a style (which is evident in how she treats - not only - brooke, but dancers like kalani, brynn and lilliana).
      even w acro, u can tell that her understanding of it is limited and that her preference for it comes from her liking to work w pre-adolescents most and her need to fill her dances w constant tricks.
      smn people seem to forget is that abby was never the seasoned-professional that she made out. her mother ran the studio whilst she watched from the sidelines, then she dropped out of school at 14 to take over running it - she has no real formal education in dance and was never even a dancer herself; her knowledge mostly extends to just having-watched her mother teach growing up... which is not enough to run a dance studio, but i digress.
      she literally ran the studio into the ground (eventually filing for bankruptcy) and her studio was a constant revolving door of clientele - most leaving by the time theyre teens, anyway. her choreography is immensely-lacking and she cannot support the talents of students more advanced than your average cute kid just wanting to cartwheel around a stage; hence why she'd bring in incredible dancers like brynn, kalani, camryn and the season 8 team and be unable to win w them.
      tl;dr - youre correct. furthermore, abby's really only suited to teaching acro, jazz and trick-heavy dances to younger children. anything more difficult and she cannot handle it - hence her always readying to blame the kids for her failures. she's not at all suited to teaching a style like contortion and it's honestly-horrifying imagining the damage she's done to other flexible kids that have come through her studio - at one point in season 3, she literally remarks that it was fine for asia and nia to go on stage unstretched, whilst doing a dance that involved loads of tricks and gymnastics moves

    I’m a licensed occupational therapist. I’ve worked with clients with repetitive stress injuries of the upper extremities (shoulder, elbow, wrists, and hands) in the past. Seeing Brooke’s shoulder dislocate on camera makes my stomach churn. Compared to the other joints in your body, your shoulder joint sucks. That joint is basically hanging on by those ligaments and tendons, and though it allows for excellent range of motion, it’s pretty unstable and susceptible to injury. Stretching them out past a certain point, you would most likely need surgery and intensive therapies from an upper extremity (hand) therapist. I’m just baffled that she never received rest or the proper therapies for her shoulder.
    And she also fractured THREE growth plates?!? A break, or even just inflammation, of one growth plate is serious enough. But THREE??? I wonder how much taller Brooke would be if she received the proper treatment. Gosh, I feel SO bad for Brooke. 😢

      Yes! I injured my shoulder when I was sixteen, went through PT and surgery and it’s never been the same. You don’t realize how much your shoulder is connected to either. They actually treated my neck for a couple months before realizing it was a torn labrum in my shoulder. Unlike other joint injuries I’ve had, my shoulder will make everything around it hurt. Neck, back, chest, pain down the arm, etc. and you use it CONSTANTLY. Like you said, even when your resting it’s still taking on the weight of your arm unless it’s supported. I can’t imagine how much pain she was in and what she’s going through now. Insane.

    I was a level 10 gymnast. I trained 5 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I had knee surgery for an OCD lesion, and had a stress fracture in my L5 vertebrae that I had for 3 years before going to the doctor. My back will never heal and to this day I can't lay certain ways, run long enough and even cross my legs or they'll get numb. Not to mention the emotional elements that still effect me to this day. Being told to suck it up and to not cry and constantly doing exercises that terrified me. I would even fake being sick when I was younger because I was so scared of beam. I remember the shame I felt when I had to tell my coaches that I was sick or injured. Actual shame, for saying I was hurt. And the MANY times I would compete and train on broke toes and fingers. I had the extra navicular bone in my foot like Kenzie does. Anytime I would sprain or strain my ankle, it would take much longer to heal because of the pressure the extra bone puts on the tendons around it. I ended up breaking that navicular bone during a triathlon and wasn't smart enough to stop. This caused me to have to have the bone removed, the real navicular shaved, and the posterior tibial tendon reshaped. I was non-weight bearing for 3 months and in a boot for another 2 months. When I saw Kenzie have the same issues, I wanted to cry for her.
    An extra bone sounds really ridiculous and not that big of a deal. But the stupid thing caused me issues until I had it removed.

    Oh I have the shoulder thing too. So I know what that feels like. I am by nature hypermobile. I've always been mindful of my back and shoulders when it comes to flexibility, cause they're super sensitive to permanent injuries due to my hypermobility. Cause I do like stretching and being flexible. Just a tip for anyone doing flexibility training: Make sure that whatever place you wanna improve flexibility, you also improve strength. Or else that place, especially joints, will become too flexible and your strength isn't enough to support the flexibility anymore. It's a real issue. I've never done any training on my shoulders, but one of my should also dislocates my simply putting it up, and it still sometimes pops in very painful ways while moving. My left shoulder has been sprained badly before. It's also super sensitive to dislocating bc of that.
    And I have similar, but less severe issues in places like my hips, my ankles, my back and even my wrists and fingers. I can't imagine the crap Brooke has had to go through with her body. It's sad how so much overuse can cause such severe damage permanently.

    1:06. I am not an expert, but Brooke might have been taught on how to do back standing tuck and land it safely for years as she does Acro and has specialised whereas Paige’s specialty was more jazz/funk. Having said that, that scene shows cement flooring which would have been risky and not just landing on their feet correctly, if there was any hesitation, there might have been a risk of a concussion if the girls landed on their heads. I am not trying to defend the situation, but from the looks and sound of it, there is not a lot of information.

For example, the first episode (I think) where Maddie is "sick", I honestly think that was a panic attack because of all the cameras she wasn't used to because she never missed dance before or afterwards and the way she acts is very similar to how she acted other times she panicked like when she forgot her dance or when she fell on the floor during her dance (also surprised you didn't include in this video the fact that when Maddie fell on her butt, she actually completed her dance, unlike what they showed on the show!)
