Alex, first of all, I'm from Venezuela, english isn't my first lenguage, so i apologize if i write something wrong. My father died due to Covid two months ago, 5 days post to my birthday. He was only not my father, he was my best friend, the one whom i trust anything. We shared the same taste in everything: movies, music, books, videogames, among other things. He was a DIE-HARD Metallica fan. Recently, i've hearing them to remember my dad and with your videos, i was able to remember all those happy memories with him hearing 'Tallica. I'm sorry if this is taking away the good mood of the video, i just wanted to share and thank you for your videos. I wish all of you the best in these difficult times
Imagine that you are 16 and you hear Escape for the first time( 15 years before the internet). I love it and it's still my favorite beacuse it's so diffrent. Years later I saw a live show when they played the whole album and then I realised how he felt about it. In a way I almost wish that you didn't read about James feelings about it before you heard it. Love the Channel!😊👍
I've always liked Escape. Then again, I listened to it before ever knowing the truth behind it. Along with Fade to Black, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Call of Ktulu, Escape gave an overall very thrashy album a lot of diversity that, to me, showed just how talented they were, not just at playing metal, but songwriting in general.
Hello Alex, 1st time i've commented on your channel, though i've been watching it for 3+ years. As the previous comment said, i like this song too, even though it's not one of their finest songs. The lyrics resonated with me, as a 21 year old, when i 1st heard this way back in 1984. And they still do to this day, despite James not liking it at all. I also really like the sound of the notes in the solo. Anyway i noticed what you said about each time you've listened to a Metallica album, that it may be your favourite. I think that whatever album you're listening to (well virtually all) at the time, is your favourite Metallica album...that's Metallica for you..hell yeah 🤘🔥
For me this is a crucial song for them, the first song where they show they have something special, and are and can be more than just another thrash metal band. I feel it in the riff that goes while he says "out for my own, out to be free", it just has some power behind it, a melody that I can't even describe...
I always got the vibe of teenage angst and rebelling against parents. Like one of the lines is literally "don't tell me what to do!" - that is the most Rebellious Teen line I've ever heard!
Even though technically “Blitzkrieg” and “Am I Evil” are not on the album (still recorded the two song while recording this album) can you still react to them after you complete the album?
@@jarredeckman1976 You're right. I had that cassette too with those two songs before they took them off. The only other time you see them is when they do Garage Inc.
@@eevee2512 Me too, and I think ReLoad is better, but Im sure Alex will run into the same thing with those albums as he did with Escape. The problem with Load and Relaod is they're not progressive. It's like when YES did 90125
i love this song and it has a great message. also, at 4:55, the vocals are really nice and heavy. the chorus effect for the guitar solo is just right and those sirens to carry this song home are really cool.
Shows how talented they are. Record label wanted one more song and they just write this like no big deal. And James doesn't even like it. But it's better than a lot of bands whole catalog.
Yeah...Escape sadly was the "throwaway" song for Metallica. But I really love playing that outro riff...it's possibly the one redeeming part of that entire song. And you should go check out Hatebreed's cover. It really brings the song to a new level and does it justice.
I wonder, would you have had the same opinion of this song if you hadn’t read about it first? Or had any prior knowledge of why it was written? Honestly I love the fact that the lyrics somehow tie in with the nature of the song itself.
It's cool (the concept not the song) sort of like when the label said "you can't call the album metal up Ur ass" so they called it "kill em all"" (the record execs) sell out and rebel at the same time, genius ;)
Kinda hard to play a song hated by the band at most, if not all shows of the tour. Just saying, they like Sandman more than Escape, so it’s obvious they’d play Sandman more often. I’d do another “By Request” tour so the fans have a say on the set list again. Then maybe Escape would be played more often.
hey alex, since you've been reacting to metallica for so long, how about you switch things up, the german "BIG 4" of thrash metal, Kreator, Tankard, Sodom and Destruction
I might not have cared for this song when I was a kid. But I listened to the album so much that I fell in love with every song because that's just what we did before the days of researching the band members feelings about songs on the internet. People always held Puppets as the greatest then, some years later they were like "you know? Lightning might have been just as good.". Good shit tho man. Thank you for checking out this old dude's childhood jams.
I love this song! !! It's been a minute but when I heard the chorus, nostalgia kicked in my friend! I lived in the perfect time for music and metal!! Because I was able to experience it in real - time as they were playing and touring as a band!!

I honestly love Escape. It's one of my favorite songs on Ride The Lightning. It's a beautiful song in my opinion, lyrically and instrumentally. It is quite different from their other songs at that time but in a good way.
"This isn't Metallica, dude." Eyeroll. As James once said, Lars is Metallica and Lars is the main force behind this song. It is fine. And the rest of the band likes it. So James doesn't dig it... big deal. I do.
This song is about personal freedom inner strength resiliency. To me it's about leaving a circle of people. That's why the line in the song "won't get caught in the endless Circle ring of stupidity." I walked away from 2 humans I knew for years. Thank goodness it's better to walk away and live your life than it is to exist in a place you don't want to be trapped in.
My mom accidentally got me this for Christmas when I was 10. I had asked for Black (it was '91) and had been introduced to metal via Master of Puppets a few months earlier. 🤘
Hi Alex, I have another recommendation for your next set of Metallica reactions. You used to react to studio versions of Metallica songs, but they are probably even better live. So my suggestion for next Metallica round is to react to LIVE performance of one song from each album. I'm aware that it's impossible to create a list that will be accepted by everyone, but my suggestions are following: Kill Them All: The Four Horsemen (Seattle 1989) RTL: Fade to Black (Seattle 1989) (my first choice would be Creeping Death from Moscow 91, but you already reacted to this one) MoP: Battery (Seattle 1989) and Disposable Heroes (Mexico City 2009). Can't decide between these two, you should do both, won't regret :) AJFA: One (Nimes 2009) Black album: Unforgiven (Mexico City 1993) Load: The Outlaw Torn (Mannheim 2019) Reload: The Memory Remains (Slane Castle 2019) St. Anger: St.Anger (Manchester 2019) DM: The Day That Never Comes (Nimes 2009) HTSD: Halo on Fire (Stuttgart 2019) + Garage Inc: Whiskey in the Jar (Slane Castle 2019) S&M: Bleeding Me S&M2: No Leaf Clover
Dude .. the verse lyric delivery is ridiculously heavy... and the chorus is far more sing alongable than most Metallica. It is really a pure anthem. One of my all time fave Metallica songs.
i think after an album of really dark, grim songs... it's kinda a nice palette cleanser to get one about personal liberation. and sonically, it shows range... foreshadowing the coming black album.
Thank you very much for your channel and for this, I absolutely love this song and I remember when this album came out, I was 13 years old and this is one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite albums by them.

Hetfield: Writes St Anger
“Escape is my worst song.”
Maybe you’re not the best judge of your own music.
St. Anger isn't a bad song. It's the snare.
imho, Escape is better than half the black album, most of Load, and all of St Anger.
Exactly! Thank you
I actually like St Anger a lot more
I love Escape.
Yea, not their strongest song, but still good.
I don’t dislike this song. Love the Hatebreed cover of it just like I love the Chimaira cover of “Disposable Heroes”
Radio label: we need a radio friendly song.
Load & Reload: hold my beer
Escape sounds more like Metallica of today
The breakdown of this song was actually really ahead of its time
Always liked this track, never knew Hetfield hated it
Hello Alex, 1st time i've commented on your channel, though i've been watching it for 3+ years. I think that whatever album you're listening to (well virtually all) at the time, is your favourite Metallica album...that's Metallica for you..hell yeah 🤘🔥
the video he reacted to seems to be downtuned
Little slower as well....
I was thinking that too. They sounded slightly "chopped and screwed"! 🥶
yeah you can notice in the voice
Yeah it’s the E flat video I personally listen to
It's slowed way down.
For me this is a crucial song for them, the first song where they show they have something special, and are and can be more than just another thrash metal band. I feel it in the riff that goes while he says "out for my own, out to be free", it just has some power behind it, a melody that I can't even describe...
I actually enjoy "Escape" a lot! The refrain and the message of the song gives me goosebumps almost everytime
What do you think about Black Metal?
I always got the vibe of teenage angst and rebelling against parents. Like one of the lines is literally "don't tell me what to do!" - that is the most Rebellious Teen line I've ever heard!
I've always loved this song. I think it fits with the musical theme of the album. I can't imagine listening to RTL and skipping Escape.
Wow, great choice!! Great to have you out here Alex. Keep on keeping on man!
React to Slash ft Myles Kennedy - Anastasia (Live in Sydney)
Metallica during the 80’s: We’ll never sell out!
Metallica during the 90’s: Sold out
Even though technically “Blitzkrieg” and “Am I Evil” are not on the album (still recorded the two song while recording this album) can you still react to them after you complete the album?
I've always associated those more with Kill 'em All. I think they even used to be put as bonus tracks at the end of KeA
I thought Am I Evil was during Kill em All
@@jarredeckman1976 You're right. I had that cassette too with those two songs before they took them off. The only other time you see them is when they do Garage Inc.
@@jarredeckman1976 I still have the cd version of kill em all with those songs on it.
You are aware that those two songs are not Metallica. They are cover songs
It's really the melody of the chorus that has that has an upbeat poppy feel that sets it apart - love the solo and the fade out
Based on what you said about this song being weird, Just wait until you listen to LOAD and RELOAD
Epic albums
The peak of James’ writing
I really like both Load and Reload. Still Metallica, just a different side of them.
@@eevee2512 Me too, and I think ReLoad is better, but Im sure Alex will run into the same thing with those albums as he did with Escape. The problem with Load and Relaod is they're not progressive. It's like when YES did 90125
my beloved albums
I love that this is considered "Radio Friendly". If all Radio Friendly songs were like this, I might actually still listen to the radio.
i love this song and it has a great message. also, at 4:55, the vocals are really nice and heavy. the chorus effect for the guitar solo is just right and those sirens to carry this song home are really cool.
Creeping Death and Call of Ktulu are going to knock your socks off and I can't wait for it!
He’s done Creeping Death before (the live version in Moscow). He’s probably gonna rereact to it again but this time the studio version.
This song is like metallica tryna play deep purple in some ways lol
The irony here is that they ended up writing some of the biggest radio hits like 7 years later.
Anyone notice that the song audio is lowered pitch or something same thing with for whom the bell tolls when Alex reacted to it lol
Meanwhile, Enter Sandman is played at almost every show.
Right?!?! This song is better in every aspect!
Same with Creeping Death too
This song is actually better
I am so sick of Enter Sandman more than any other Metallica song specifically for that reason.
I played escape live every time I play the show. This song is awesome
React to Metallica’s Load Album!!! Would love to see what your take is on their new direction at the time.
why would you want someone to listen to that if they didn't have to? lol
@@kevinmckee6985 I always like to see someone’s reaction to such a drastic change 🤷♂️
Love it already! Continue Alex:) cheers
hey alex, since you've been reacting to metallica for so long, how about you switch things up, the german "BIG 4" of thrash metal, Kreator, Tankard, Sodom and Destruction
Did you know Gojira made a cover of this? 😏
Serious
And it’s fucking amazing
@@orangeunderscore got to check it friend
I love this song! !! It's been a minute but when I heard the chorus, nostalgia kicked in my friend! I lived in the perfect time for music and metal!! Because I was able to experience it in real - time as they were playing and touring as a band!!
React to Dream Theater's images and words. The whole album is a masterpiece.
Yes but Train of Thought
10 years of reacting
@Prozakhistan lol
I was up front against the snake pit when they played this at Orion Fest
Never understood why he hated it, It has more of a melody too it and does fit well within the album. Also like the Fire Siren sound towards the end of the song
The songs Just Not as heavy as the others though but definitely worth a listen each time
Agreed
They have played the song live only once or twice. They ended up almost having to because they did a few shows where they played the album in its entirety
During these times they could have made any song sound great
Hearing everything since then this song really alluded to the way they would sound in later albums😎
Please check & react to Filipino Metal Bands 🇵🇭:
Greyhoundz, Slapshock, Valley Of Chrome, Wolfgang, Kamikazee, Urbandub, Franco, Chicosci, Our Last Night & Tower Of Doom videos.
Slapshock - The Crown
Kamikazee - If You're Not Here or Lucky
Typecast - Will You Ever Learn, The Boston Drama & Reverend's Daughter
Valley Of Chrome - When Everything Turn To Dust (Tower Session)
This song always makes me think of a 80’s movie montage lol
You REALLY need to stop researching songs before you listen to them, it's going to color your views.
I loved this song for years before I knew he hated it. Screw James, he wrote Load.
I agree... But on the flip side without prior intel / research, Alex may think that it's fair game to do an album review of St Anger 🤓
"This isn't Metallica", is exactly how I felt the first time hearing the 'Black' album
Awww... someone has to be edgy.. How cute.
Justice was the best then Master.
My mom accidentally got me this for Christmas when I was 10. I had asked for Black (it was '91) and had been introduced to metal via Master of Puppets a few months earlier. 🤘
This song just feels so 80’s! I still love it.
*James* : angry when forced to write a radio-friendly song
*also James* (few years later) : guess I'm gonna make a whole album of them
Hi Alex,
I have another recommendation for your next set of Metallica reactions. You used to react to studio versions of Metallica songs, but they are probably even better live. So my suggestion for next Metallica round is to react to LIVE performance of one song from each album.
I'm aware that it's impossible to create a list that will be accepted by everyone, but my suggestions are following:
Kill Them All: The Four Horsemen (Seattle 1989)
RTL: Fade to Black (Seattle 1989) (my first choice would be Creeping Death from Moscow 91, but you already reacted to this one)
MoP: Battery (Seattle 1989) and Disposable Heroes (Mexico City 2009). Can't decide between these two, you should do both, won't regret :)
AJFA: One (Nimes 2009)
Black album: Unforgiven (Mexico City 1993)
Load: The Outlaw Torn (Mannheim 2019)
Reload: The Memory Remains (Slane Castle 2019)
St. Anger: St.Anger (Manchester 2019)
DM: The Day That Never Comes (Nimes 2009)
HTSD: Halo on Fire (Stuttgart 2019)
+
Garage Inc: Whiskey in the Jar (Slane Castle 2019)
S&M: Bleeding Me
S&M2: No Leaf Clover
I like this radio-friendly song a LOT more than the radio-friendly (pop) songs they release a few years later.
This is a very good song Alex. It's a song many of us felt/feel everyday & live life by. FREEDOM!
Keep in mind that Ktulu is all about bass. Find the bass enhanced version for the reaction (From Andriy Vasylenko’s channel)
Dude .. the verse lyric delivery is ridiculously heavy... and the chorus is far more sing alongable than most Metallica. It is really a pure anthem. One of my all time fave Metallica songs.
i think after an album of really dark, grim songs... it's kinda a nice palette cleanser to get one about personal liberation. and sonically, it shows range... foreshadowing the coming black album.
guitar solo in this song has always been one of my favorites
Thank you very much for your channel and for this, I absolutely love this song and I remember when this album came out, I was 13 years old and this is one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite albums by them.
Radio friendly? That song is so heavy, it was never played on the radio, lol. One of my all time favorite MetallicA songs.
It is one of their songs. It’s the genesis of elements and concepts that came out on the black album.
Saw them play this live for the first time when they played ride the lighting in full. He made the comment how they hated this somg before they played it lol.
