      He also pointed out an excellent reason not to use those cheap quick-hooks at 6:30 I would recommend if you have any lying around the shop or on towing and recovery vehicles that you have them removed from those areas and send them to a recycling or disposal facility. They are most definitely not safe to use in a towing or recovery situation, in my opinion.

      @@DarkVoidIII ''Fine for securing Cargo'', Ron secures a lot of cargo after wrecks!
      The closed hook style would not work for securing a shifted or insecure load to a flat deck trailer where the hook is simply latched into the frame rail. This is why his Truck has every kind of strap going on it, You never know what will work until you get there.

    • @aaronb7990

      If that is what they are doing you should tell them that they should try x-strapping the right way because that's not it. A X-strap is called that because all 4 points of the strap go to the 'trailer' in this case and the load is positioned at the center.
      I did quite enjoy Matts demonstration of why you don't improperly secure a load without understanding the physics of where the tension is going.
      Though I think a bit of it is still not clicking, like when he cut the toy free and the suspension unloaded because the straps were pulling the control arms straight and thereby compressing suspension. This also happens on real Jeeps and is why even when 'straight' the mount points get un nessicary abuse this way. When used without proper angle to the load the amount of tension needed to create downforce is dramatically increased and constant tension combined with suspension cycling causes strap/mount fatigue.

    Great video Matt.
    I am late to the party.
    When I was kid on the farm my dad told me to always use a minimum of 4 separate tie downs when hauling equipment and more if you need. He also said never cross them in an X pattern as the X can act as a pivot point and like you said if one comes lose the load can shift and can come off.
    Well one day I was lazy and used just 2 chain, one across the front and one across the back of a set of disc. As I rounded a corner the back chain broke, and you know what happened.
    After telling my dad what I did and we had a very very long talk. From that point on I always had a minimum of 4 separate tie downs one in each corner and more if needed.
    That was the last time I ever lost a load.

    I first watched your video about a year or so back and well to be honest I was always a cross strap type of guy but your video made it fool proof. Thanks to this video… I changed the way I tie down. Well wouldn’t you know it… I’ve put thousands of miles pulling numerous amounts of vehicles had NEVER had anything happen. That is until about 2 months ago. What was supposed to be the sure fire best way to tie down a car… wasn’t so sure after all. I broke a cold link on a grade 70 1/2” heat treated chain while hauling two top sportsman cars to a points meet in Baytown. Never in a million years would I have dreamed of that being the fault point. Thankfully the car indeed did stay fairly still. It was on the upper deck of my hauler. That would have been catastrophic had I not altered the way I tie my cars. I feel like I owe a huge thank you to you buddy. Preciate your video. People… if you watch this video and continue or choose to tie down against what your eyes are seeing … don’t be foolish. It’s true. Thanks again bud god bless

    I never cross strap. For the reasons that you mentioned in the video. I also never use straps on the rear, I use two chains on the rear and pull the vehicle tight with straps on the front. I do this because I have seen trucks hauling a vehicle on a trailer and get into an accident, and that caused the rear straps to snap and the vehicle on the trailer ends up on or in the truck pulling it. So seeing that many times over the years of doing rotation calls for the police and highway patrol, I myself decided that using chains on the rear is best. I set my trailer up with chains the exact length needed so that I can pull my truck on and hook the two chains to each side of the rear axle, and then I pull my truck forward until the chains stop me, and then my truck is always in the same exact spot on the trailer, which is where I need it to be so that the load is perfectly placed. Then I use two straps on the front to pull it tight, and then a safety chain just in case something goes wrong with the two front straps, which I've never had happen. I've had one come a little lose sometimes, but never had an issue with both.

    Part of my job as an Air Force Crew Chief, was helping to tie down equipment and vehicles. They always cross strapped the vehicles, but also used multiple straps to secure the load. We used 10,000 pound straps, connected to 20,000 pound D rings. Vehicles would get eight straps, four to hold it, and four as backups. You don't want loads to come loose in flight.
    I always cross strapped my trailer loads, but now have second thoughts.

I have had ratchet and cam binders loosen way up or just pop open hauling backhoes. I use snubbing binders when I haul jeeps too. I agree with you on cross binding.

    I don’t know where “cross strapping” started. But cross chaining is from ramp truck operators (tow truck drivers) put your car on the ramp and we attract our cluster to factory tow holes put in place from your car manufacturer. They are above the suspension. We will cross either the front or the back and pull straight on the other side to compress the suspension evenly keep it from moving on a slippery ramp. These days we most certainly use tire straps. When it’s available.

I used to cross strap loads, but I'm convinced that for my Jeep, I'm going to go straight strapped from now on! Another point between straps and chain binders (I have both) is to consider duty cycle - commercial car haulers hopefully have a load traveling each direction, everyday every year. I wish I had the kind of time off from work so I would have to necessitate using chain binders instead of wearing out the straps I go with! Another good thing to think of - I always keep a set of J hooks and a bridle in the back of my Jeep or TR4 because when somebody gets stuck and I have to give them a yank, the last thing I want to do is have to try to do it off of cargo tie down! When I get a trailer i plan on using 4 straight straps like Matt shows plus 2 on the frame going straight out to each side of the trailer.

    So much better than your original “how to tie a rig down” video lol. People recommend cross straps because it does hold a load better than straight strap. Cut like you displayed, if a cross strap fails your done. No safety net like straight strap.

    Regarding short trailers, it is possible and sometimes practical to secure the front axle to the rear and rear axle to the front. Basically crossing the straps front to rear. I have used that method before.

    Another good video. I agree with this. Straight straps seem superior than cross strapping. Although chain and binders are preferred, straps can be more than sufficient for cars like this. Chains probably aren't truly necessary until you are moving equipment (tractors etc).

    In the military we crossed strapped most cargo, I remember doing the smaller lifts in an x underneath but that was chains they didn’t cross they went x one side and x on the other side. I’m not sure if it was better or not but that’s what I was told to do.

    Great advice Matt! Now I’m no expert but I do a lot of hauling of vehicles and cargo and I’ve never lost anything due to a strap failing or coming loose. I absolutely agree you should never cross strap when it comes to vehicles. With cargo it really depends. Sometimes cross strapping is safer sometimes it’s not, it really depends what your strapping down. The main thing is say you have two straps holding down an object, you want to strap it down in a way that if one strap breaks or comes loose that the other will continue to secure your cargo to your trailer or truck bed or wherever it’s strapped down. If it’s a crate we’re talking about both straight or cross strapping are probably fine. (As long as it’s a normal square/rectangle crate lol..) However if it’s an odd shaped object where you can only get one strap straight over one side in a good location and the other is just there more or less for sh*ts & giggles then your better off cross strapping so both can hold the object down on there own without the other strap present.

  • @terraforge_motorsports

    There’s three types of motion that a vehicle faces on a trailer; forward/Aft, laterally, and Verticality. By crossing straps or chains you can receive restraint in all three categories of directions. The way you’re showing one gives you restraint in forward/Aft and vertical, but nothing laterally. Also I’d recommend grabbing no less then 50% of the vehicles restraint from the body/frame. It provides a more stable platform for the trailer. If you want I have a loading manual that I use to load aircraft if you care to see the science behind it. Ride safe and maybe we’ll cross trails some time!

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would tend to agree its not as strong laterally but to say there is nothing is certainly proven wong by the demo otherwise it would have slid off. Gotta remember the strap is also at an upward angle from the deck to the axle.

    • @howardhudson7214
      @howardhudson7214 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All you would have to do is secure closer to the edge of the trailer sides and that would take care of any lateral movement.

    • @KC9UDX
      @KC9UDX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless the strap can move, or stretch significantly, there's no chance for lateral movement. Even when they do stretch, they have to get very loose, *plus* have significant lateral force to get a tire to go sideways. With enough lateral force to cause a problem, you've got other, much bigger concerns.

    Id have to disagree matt, although using straight straps is probably OK on car/truck/jeep, cross strapping whenever possible provides much better load securement from all directions, where as straight straps have no side to side securement. 9 times out of 10 you should have no issues with the jeep sliding side to side on the trailer with rubber tires on wood/steel deck. also straps breaking is 99% of the time failed pretrip inspection of your equipment. all tie downs should be properly checked to be in good condition. they do not just "break". if they are breaking and in good condition that means your straps are not heavy enough for the application.
