Bix rocks! Couldn't be more economical or convenient. Way less air pollution than Esbit tabs. Perfect for big, steam-hungry models like my Wilesco T-125. Can maintain continuous boiler pressure for larger engines where solid fuel and meths cannot. One of us needs to make a video showing how to tune these. It's a bit of a black art and I see a lot of questions online and even people who've melted them down!
Thank you for the informative demonstration, especialy abouthow the gas tank is filled. I had everything except the necessary adaptor. Now I've ordered one. Thanks again!
As far as i know they can also be found in the USA as i have heard from an online steam forum. The burner itself can be ordered from a model steam engine company called 'Forest Classics steam' . if you google it you will find them and i am sure they post to the USA:
Yes they will run both, i have run them on everything from lighter gas, camping gas , household cooking gas and blowtorch gas. Butane, propane or butane/propane mix.
I assume because Butane/propane mix 70/30 is the most reliable gas for small burners like this in terms if flame quality, heat production , easy to light and the mix is also less affected by environmental temperatures. Also its probably the gas type that they have done their own tests on.
Thank you for a very informative video. I have just bought the Bix026 burner and gas tank along with a Bix019 adapter. Just one little point if I may. You did not show how to adjust the jet into the ceramic burner as per the instructions provided with the Bix026 which is a shame as that is all that is missing from an excellent instructional video. Thank you and I hope you don't mind my small criticism.
thanks for your help and fast reply, do you know why bix recommends using the 70/30 butane propane mix compared to straight butane or propane?, thanks again.
If you use the engine outdoors (garden railway for example), straight butane may not burn well in cold weather. It liquifies and doesn't vaporize at all at about - 1C.
Excellent burners. I wonder if I can find those gas canisters in the US. They do not look like our standard bottles that are used for camp lanterns and stoves etc. How much do they cost and where can I purchase them? Thanks again for the excellent vid! Ross in Morro Bay California
Ross Guldenbrein Ross you can buy different gases at your local plumbing store, I find mapp gas burns very hot, you may wish to use propane. Either is fine. I'm a plumber by trade and do a lot of copper sweating. And each tank lasts for quite some time, and there cheap
I use camp stove gas. Get the little 019 adapter, which screws onto one of those Jetboil or MSR stove cartridges. 70/30 butane / propane mix, endlessly available, cheaper than dirt at REI, Walmart, anywhere that sells camping gear. It's the same screw fitting as these taller canisters. I've seen these around but they aren't as common stateside as the dome-shaped Jetboil type. Don't use propane alone, especially with one of the little black Bix tanks. They aren't made for the higher pressure. Butane alone works and I've filled mine with cigarette lighter gas.

Just to thank you most sincerely for a most informative video. Even I could understand the items I need for a gas conversion.
I am humbled by your kind words and happy that I could be of help.

Yep, I've ordered Bix kit from MInisteam (US) and Forest Classics (UK). Not too expensive even with international shipping.

@frydady90
I should think so since it fits in my Jensen 65 . I use the shorter burner as seen in the video for it without problems.
Depends on how much flame you set it to but on an average setting it will last about 15 - 20 mins.
I appreciate your positive and constructive criticism. I will try and make a video showing how to do that too as soon as i can make the time.
Very informative and thanks for doing this
Thanks very much for the information in this video. Very helpful.

Thank you for the vid!
I just git an 026 burner today for my SP4 Mamod
Mine is shooting a 12 in yellow flame. How do I fix it?
You have to adjust the position of the gas jet. This adjusts the gas air ratio and the purity of the flame.
will these burners run off of straight butane or straight propane?, thanks for your help.
Wow super cute I wish I can have it 😁😆😁😁 but it's to expensive for me.thank for video
