I just got back from NAMM and played both amps in the Friedman room. Both sounded great. The wet/dry setup they had there made both sound thunderous. For the money I don't think you can go wrong with the little JJ. It's 20 watts and tone wise sounds more like it's EL34 big brother than any EL84 20 watter I have had. The trick is to not push the power section past its limit. Like Dave says in the video, at some point the 20 watter will not keep up with the 100 watts volume. That being said the usable volume this little amp was pushing out of two 4x12 cabs in that room was more than enough for any club gig.
It was a bit of both. That being said, people who use the 20w instead of 100w might not need the extra push of the JJ-100. If you want a big amp like the JJ-100 to sound at its best, you'll need to crank it waaaaayyy louder than any small to mid size stage will allow you to. In a recording studio, just crank either amp to death, it'll be fine. Also, these amps were not maxed out. They were set to be in the same ballpark. Even when maxed out the 100w is going to be only a few dB louder. It'll sound bigger though.
@@thomasniehof6333 Sorry I just butt-dialed a bunch of replies lol. I always go back and forth between getting the power section of a smaller amp working and the bigger sound of bigger iron. Both amps sound absolutely massive in this video though.
rockinchippy Right... makes sense. Just can’t recall if it’s actually a “reactive load”. I imagine either way, it’ll probably still sound great running direct with IRs.
JL C trust me the Friedman amps need no help in sounding great. I have one I’ll tell u which one. The smallbox limited. Sounds great and doesn’t need any pedals. But I’m a pedal addict so I like to change things up a bit with distortion or fuzz or od but that’s just my thing. But it’s great on its own. And gain dimed. It’s quiet. unlike some other amps that bring in a radio station. Love it. Took forever to get it. I did not like one and that was the taco. Great size but master volume was just too loud for my needs. Still sounded good. Just love it though but the rest of his amps are the best. That’s my opinion. And I’m sticking to it. 😉
havent played the JVM but i also love Jerry's tone. have u seen that 1992 LA tour vid at the Palladium ? insane crunch. Friedman amps are great but pricey. The JJ will give u that tone of course, but u could also try overdriving an average tube amp (older type marshall/fender/Laney/traynor/peavey etc.) with a overdrive pedal like a Tubescreamer, an EQ, Boost.. If u can set the JVM for like half-distorted, a tubescreamer might then give u better distortion than the amp alone.
Can't tell the difference between the jr with el84s and the 100 with el34s. Not sure how he managed that. Has more guts than my current amp with 3 el34s. All in the transformer and how he has it set up, I suppose. But what do I know.
@@dvdpz89 TBH the Invective MH sounded like doo doo in the 1 video I saw. I am a metal player 100% so you would think the Invective would be a given but nope. Dave knows better than Peavey IMO. I only have that 1 clip to go from but the Invective MH sounded nothing like the big invective. But the mini JJ sounds dead on and this can absolutely pull off high gain metal of any kind, especially with a boost. Sorry I am still excited, I am definitely getting this JJ.
