@@hunnid17that's rather unskilled labour wages outside the big cities. But one has to admit that without skill and experience good jobs outside the major hubs would be challenging. It's not early 2010s anymore when the shocking mass inward immigration shocked the markets in the big cities which led to 50 people applying for a petrol station job...which was paying at the time 450bgn a month. Things have changed dramatically but I guess rural Bulgaria doesn't have many opportunities just yet.
@@hunnid17when you put everything in perspective you'll understand it's not just the amount you make but what you can afford with it. With my wife we make about 9k net( after taxes) a month in rural England ( ok not that rural but still). Our mortgage is 2300 pcm, council tax is 4k a year( or 10 instalments of 400) , broadband is 70, phone bills just under 200, gas and electric are about £400 a month over the colder months ( 150ish in the short summer without CH). The water bill is 700 a year. My car insurance is 760 a year and my wife's 600. This is just utilities and the most important bills. And there is a lot more to add. Compare this to 70bgn council tax a year and 10 leva water bills etc. I'll not even bother to point out how much we pay for our daughter's school fees etc( state education in the UK is really bad so if you want your little darling to succeed in life you pay, and you pay a lot). We both work crazy hours. Does your mum work on average 12+h a day? I doubt it. I have seen tons of videos where people need about 600-700 euro a month to live decently with two kids. And of course no mortgage. We wanted to have a second kid but we just couldn't afford it. I still remember the stress we had with the first one and how I forced ( er, I literally begged her) my mum to come over to help. We weren't getting anywhere near our current earnings. I've starved in both UK and Bulgaria and I know the two sides of the coin in both. When people moan how expensive Bulgaria is with one of the lowest bills in Europe, you just laugh. In the UK if I don't pay my TV tax I'll be thrown in prison. Imagine paying 160 euro a year to BNT even if you don't watch it.

Admittedly I bought a house nearly two decades ago near Sofia that nowadays I can sell for obscene amounts of monies. And we have our big chunk of equity in our current house. Council tax was 250bgn a year in central part of Sofia. In rural areas it is still under 100 leva. Do you pay 300 leva electric bill ( without cooking as we cook on gas and we don't have Air con)? Please I was born and raised in the exact same country as you and just like you I know how things are. Let me guess, you worked in Germany on min wage with accommodation and bills included with transport provided and you were single. I have tons of friends who done that in both Germany and France and in the UK. It's very different to actually live there and have a family. Also you can get a remote job as a self employed if you have the language and skills to do it. I have my own business here in the UK which I'll either sell or hire people to do my job with a couple visits a month( obviously I'll get a big reduction on my income) but I haven't decided yet. This is so much like my wife’s Bulgarian family. I married her 24 years ago in Sofia. We raised two boys in San Francisco and now in our later years we are thinking of going back to the BG countryside. This is like a postcard video of our experiences. I miss the food and the quiet of the countryside. So glad I discovered your channel.😊
Never knew Bulgaria was the oldest country in Europe. Nobody should be embarrassed by waving ones own country flag. It was lovely. Always nice to see family get togethers. Hope you're feeling better. Look forward to more videos. All the best 🇬🇧.

I visited Bulgaria with my wife and daughter about 12 years ago a few times visiting Stara Zagora, Plovdiv and Sophia. We were blown away by how friendly people were and the hospitality we were shown. Bulgaria was great and I'd very much like to get back there to see areas we missed the first time.
That’s a lovely sentiment! There’s a unique charm to both New York and Bulgaria, but I can see why someone would be drawn to the rich diversity of European towns and the chance to be close to nature. Living in Bulgaria or other parts of Europe indeed offers a distinctive lifestyle, with opportunities for social connections and a more nature-centric life. And of course, nothing beats the experience of wearing a beautiful sunflower dress while exploring the countryside or charming villages! Greetings from small island Solta in Dalmacia/CRO.
Welcome back home! That is a real pleasure to see Bulgarian home interior, it looks very much like our grandpa's and grandma's here in Russia. Table serving style and meals also very similar to what we used to serve at family gatherings. Bulgarian language is probably the closest to Russian. Also i remember back in Sovier era, there was abundance of 5 liter glass cans with pickled Bulgarian tomatoes and cucumbers, called Assorti. Even some type of bell pepper we call Bulgarian pepper 😉 That all means we have deep common Slavianic roots. Let the politics be aside of real human connections and friendship.
Thank you so much! It’s great to be back in the Motherland. Ooooo how interesting! My Baba Vera (Not the one in this video. My other Baba) was a Russian teacher her whole life and absolutely LOVES Russia. She spent a very big portion of her life in Russia and your brilliant doctors even saved her from kidney failure. So thank you for that! 🌹 I didn’t know you enjoyed our pickled vegetables in Russia during the Soviet era. This is incredible to learn! Even more so that you have a pepper you call “Bulgarian Pepper”! I love it!! If you don’t mind, I would love to site this info in some of my future videos 😃🫑 🌶️ P.S- Here is a video with Baba Vera who I was referring to, in case you want to see her. Болгарский язык имеет много общего с русским, но есть и другие славянские языки, более близкие к русскому. Если твоя фамилия Шевченко, разве ты не слышал о Тарасе Шевченко?
@sistersofbulgaria9396 Surely you could cite whatever information you would like to. Just googled Болгарский перец again, this is actually a common name for the bell pepper not only in Russia but in many other countries. This is similar to what the people of other countries call "Russian salad" for the salad we here call "Olivye" with kind of French pronunciation, and we are not aware of that "Russian salad" naming at all 😀 Say Здравствуйте to Baba Vera :)
Браво Лори, нека чужденците добре да си сверят часовниците, защото всичко познато днес излиза от нашата земя. Thanks for the video. Great view from one of the best hotels "Hotel Balkan". Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to do these videos and the quality of your videos are improving every day. I've got two suggestions, I'll try to keep it brief. You've got 90% what it takes to have a successful TH-cam channel, (great thumbnails for instance) but there are a couple of areas where I could suggest some improvements. Number one, more camera time on you! It helps improve the quality of your videos if you're filming for instance flowers and then a side shot of you looking at the flowers then if you're explaining something about some animals or the village, another shot of you in the same area. It helps people stay oriented. You've got great on camera presence and you're very photogenic so you should use that. I know this is a lot more work and it takes more time but it will really help make your TH-cam videos much more enjoyable to watch, and I think you'll see your subscriber base begin to really climb. Secondly, I know that I personally am just as interested in the people of Bulgaria as I am the plants and the animals. So my second suggestion is spend a little more of your video with faces of the people up close and talking to them. Also, break up those shots as I've suggested above with some side shots. If you're photographing a dinner like you did in this video break up shots of the food with a few seconds of the people at the table or the second shot a little further back taking in the whole table and then back to the individual dishes. I guess actually a third suggestion, it's apparent that most of the people in your village and your family are camera shy and that's understandable. In this video we see basically the back of your sister's head and that's it. Obviously she's camera shy and asked you not to film her but all you really need to do is in your voiceover narration (which is perfect by the way) is let your viewers know that someone is camera shy and you are honoring their wishes. That's it, I've become a loyal viewer of your channel and hope that you keep it up you've got some great content and I love your format focusing on the architecture, plants and animals and people of this undervalued part of the world, thank you! from Texas USA
Thank you so much! I can’t tell you how happy it makes me that you are enjoying 😊😊😊 I also love watching videos and learning about other cultures. I have been on Japan and China the past few days and it’s incredible to see how different their everyday lives are from ours. 🌎 ✈️

Do you also have Sdravetz? It’s a plant a geranium and also in English called Bulgarian Big Root. It’s for good health and good luck. 3 years age I moved back to Varna with my wife, after growing up in Canada for 30 years. I felt like I was the only crazy person going in that direction, Bulgarians were constantly like "what the hell did you leave Canada for!?". Since then though, the tone has changed so much! I never get asked why I left, people are always "life is better here right? its nice here" and I see SO MANY Bulgarians moving back. I no longer feel crazy for moving here, I love the food, the weather, the human-friendly lifestyle. My wife isn't Bulgarian, and she's adjusted really well and loves it here. Overall an amazing decision.
I knew you were Bulgarian! 😃🇧🇬 I know EXACTLY what you mean. People in bigger cities who are chasing big salaries still call me crazy but all people na Selo and in smaller villages always respond with “life is so much better here, right!?”. It sounds like you have an amazing wife. Not everyone would be willing to give such a move a try. I’m so happy you guys are happy here!
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 Looking at my comment again, I sound like a FOB. "3 years age, I moved back to Varna with ma wife" (Borat voice). I meant 3 years ago lol, I hope that was obvious. It really does feel good knowing other young Bulgarians are coming back here and loving it. Life here is a lot more pleasant, everything feels more down to earth (literally). I lived in Toronto my whole life, which is a lot like like New York, big city, crackheads, overpriced, none of the easy european vibe that we have here. We're in Varna now enjoying the beach life, but I'm a little jealous of you peasants in the village. Fresh air, good food!
The meal looked amazing. I’m looking forward to the videos of traveling across Bulgaria to come. Thanks for sharing views of Sofia. As beautiful as the city is I think that it pales in comparison to the farm.

*15 YEARS LIVING IN BULGARIA* I have seen literally hundreds of young people leave for the West - and then return after 5, 8, 10 years And now the wage gap with the West is much smaller I hear very few talking about leaving. Bulgarians don't realise what they have until they have left it behind. Western countries are so materialistic and so individualistic the shine of higher wages wears off for many quite quickly. A Bulgarian friend in Bristol pay £600/pm for a bedroom in a shared house
We pay £2300 mortgage a month up north( in the Wirral) . My reasons for leaving were the mass internal immigration to my city ( Sofia) and second falling in love with a valley girl( from Wales, UK) . Priorities I guess... There used to ve a lot of issues with the job market. No opportunities to climb the ladder unless you know the right people and also difficulties finding any job paying enough to live with.
Why? What happened with the good old free housing & the traditional British Labourist hospitality? I don't wanna work & pay things when I go UK, I wanna be free non materialistic just spiritual I exist therefore I need!
Good Grief! I so want to have dinner at your BaBa's place. I have had the privilege of visiting Ruse, Tarnovo and along the Danube to the western border. Loved the country and the people I met. Oh, and, I think Bulgarian Red Wines ( especially the Cabernets ) beat everyone.
Oooo it was!! Just wait until you see what’s coming 😃. The next few videos are going to be on our travels and adventures around Bulgaria. I think you will find them exciting and.. hilarious 😆
I really miss Bulgarian tomatoes and peppers. My wife's family grow their own in a village outside of Plovdiv and the soil is black and rich which is why they taste so good - the tomatoes are so firm and don't drip juice. The ones in the UK suck - very green, hard and are just liquid inside. I barely eat vegetables in the UK but would live on them if I lived in Bulgaria. Looking forward to going back next year just for the salads.
Ye but bring few British Hons with you in internal BG we're ppl there too. every summer we have to go to Black Sea to catch some then to the sky resorts and half the year is gone. cause if like it I better follow Kim or Angie to Old York or Old Jersey.

Ooooooo how exciting! My advice is if you think it will make you happier then DO IT! You’ll never know unless you try 🤷🏻♀️ May I ask what makes you want to leave Australia? I have heard such wonderful things about your country. Just curious 😊
It's horrendous here .we are no longer Australians .we are directed and owned by the American democrats and are forced to except a corporate constitution over our own constitution we now have an American hospital system .we have a corporate government system and are currently lied to and forced to except woke left garbage .taxes are so high I'm treading water every week .no one can afford housing .I'm lucky because I realised something was wrong 15 years ago. $800,000 for the average home . The same home in hungary would be $350,000 .there is a lot more to it all but I don't recognise my country anymore and really don't want to participate in the government's communist agenda .
In fact, more Bulgarian people are returning to Bulgaria, particularly from Western Europe. The growing number of TH-cam channels created by foreigners starting new lives here also indicates rising interest in the country. Where else can you enjoy so many sunny days and yet four distinct seasons? And with winters becoming increasingly milder, Bulgaria is likely to become even more appealing. Yes, the political landscape has its challenges, but that's a global trend nowadays.
I have been noticing this as well and sincerely hope Bulgarians are beginning to return. It’s nice to see Bulgaria getting attention and foreign people moving here but we need BULGARIANS to return… It’s heartbreaking to see how quickly our population is decreasing 😔. I honestly thought we were at 8 million and was shocked to learn we were at 6.5. I will be honest, after living here for these past few years I do understand why people feel the need to leave as far as salaries go. The salaries people are receiving based on the work is completely ridiculous and insulting actually. If only our economic state would improve…then our country would be a force to reckon with. Let’s keep hoping 🇧🇬❤️

But from NY and Manhattan to a farm in Bulgaria is an epic move! Looking forward to your explanation. I visited NY twice a few years ago. It was incredble to walk around in for a few days, went to Boston and New Hampshire too. But I remember thinking, I wouldn't wanna live there either - I prefer the quiet and calm of Yorkshire UK. Curious? Cause she was living like a peasant there, clearly got more money and help from family, and no rent over here, trying to grow TH-cam income. She should stop spamming videos inviting foreigners here. Same shit happened to Portugal, Costa Rica, Bali, Phuket.
Smart. Let the herd stumble over each other as they jump off the cliff of modern chaos, pollution, noise and crime stuffing themselves into overcrowded cities. Be contrary and follow your intuition no matter what others think or do. Be happy!
Hey Lori, I do no think that "everyone wants to leave Bulgaria". I am Bulgarian born and raised here. 29y/o and a lot of my relatives who studies or worked abroad started coming back in the past 3-4 years. The issue now is the rapid aging of our country. Cheers.
Of course 🙂 This is just a phrase that I keep hearing over and over again and decided to touch upon the topic and show that our beautiful country is not as bad as some people think. I too returned to Bulgaria from NYC. The sad truth, though, is that a lot of our young people still are choosing to leave. Out of all the kids that I spent my summers Na Selo with, more than half of them are living and working abroad. Only I don’t blame them… the salaries here are insulting compared to the work our people put in and compared other countries. That said, I also feel that more people are returning than in the past. Just not enough.. yet! We need Bulgarians back home so that our population stops falling and begins to climb. We are from too great a country to allow it to go down this way. I’m not sure if the economy will improve anytime soon but we can always keep hoping. Cheers and best wishes to you and your loved ones! 🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬

@@hunnid17desolated village? I'm tempted to live in veliko turnovo ( I always loved our old capital) and a house in short drive from there goes for about 50-100k( I'm not talking a wreck build 100 years ago that haven't seen renovation in the last 60-70 years).
And my wife as an accountant can work remotely.
The private school in VT is 3900e a year( compare that to 26000gbp a year we currently pay) .
@@hunnid17 how many years ago was that ? Certainly sounds like before the pandemic and war in Ukraine. Try now to live on min wage anywhere in Western Europe...
@@hunnid17 and last but not least, in the west you'll always be filthy eastern European no matter what. That's how most seem to think of us. If I didn't marry a local girl I would've been back over a decade ago. I'm done with this conversation. We got to the conclusion we agree to disagree. Moaning and winging doesn't help anyone. If you don't have the required skills and degree to progress, what are you waiting for ? There is no age limit to enlist in further education.

Even some type of bell pepper we call Bulgarian pepper 😉
That all means we have deep common Slavianic roots.
I didn’t know you enjoyed our pickled vegetables in Russia during the Soviet era. This is incredible to learn! Even more so that you have a pepper you call “Bulgarian Pepper”! I love it!! If you don’t mind, I would love to site this info in some of my future videos 😃🫑 🌶️
P.S- Here is a video with Baba Vera who I was referring to, in case you want to see her. She speaks Russian fluently and is teaching me to speak it now. You are absolutely right- our languages are very similar 🇧🇬 🇷🇺

Болгарский язык имеет много общего с русским, но есть и другие славянские языки, более близкие к русскому. Если твоя фамилия Шевченко, разве ты не слышал о Тарасе Шевченко?
@sistersofbulgaria9396
Surely you could cite whatever information you would like to. Just googled Болгарский перец again, this is actually a common name for the bell pepper not only in Russia but in many other countries. This is similar to what the people of other countries call "Russian salad" for the salad we here call "Olivye" with kind of French pronunciation, and we are not aware of that "Russian salad" naming at all 😀

Thanks for the video. Great view from one of the best hotels "Hotel Balkan". Sofia is a really old town "4000 years", with a very rich history. You can actually go down from the hotel, like 50 meters and it's there, the old Serdica (Sofia),buried in the ground.
Sofia is 8100 years old and is not only the oldest city in Europe but also one of the oldest cities in the world.

What are the other 11% I want 101 I want all & I wanted the day before yesterday so I should have it already I don't even know why & what am I asking!
Its a wonderful place to live.
Yes it is! 🇧🇬🌹
Great video. I've always enjoyed learning about other cultures. The way you go about presenting yours is very interesting. Kudos.
Thank you so much! I can’t tell you how happy it makes me that you are enjoying 😊😊😊
I also love watching videos and learning about other cultures. I have been on Japan and China the past few days and it’s incredible to see how different their everyday lives are from ours. 🌎 ✈️
I've lived in Astoria, Queens for 20yrs and now I'm in Bulgaria since 2017. Can't complain, it's pretty chill life🎉
Oh wow 😮 Are you Bulgarian?
Yes, I'm Bulgarian. One thing I know is that if I ever decide to go back, isn't gonna be NYC for sure. Let me know if you come to Sofia, lunch is on me. Take care and good luck
Do you also have Sdravetz? It’s a plant a geranium and also in English called Bulgarian Big Root. It’s for good health and good luck. People used to carry it when traveling or starting something new like the first day of school or a new job. Have a great time with your visitors! Manja awesome dish and so is everything. Any banitsa? 👀 I visit Colombia too! I wear a jacket that looks like Bulgarian flag with Bulgaria written on the back…
3 years age I moved back to Varna with my wife, after growing up in Canada for 30 years.
I know EXACTLY what you mean.

*15 YEARS LIVING IN BULGARIA* I have seen literally hundreds of young people leave for the West - and then return after 5, 8, 10 years
And now the wage gap with the West is much smaller I hear very few talking about leaving.

Hi Laurie how are you? Good morning, have a wonderful day❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I really miss Bulgarian tomatoes and peppers.

I believe the soil you are talking about is “chernozem”. It is very very fertile and grows delicious crops! I also don’t eat any fruits in vegetable in America… it’s like eating rubber 😳

Curious? Cause she was living like a peasant there, clearly got more money and help from family, and no rent over here, trying to grow TH-cam income. She should stop spamming videos inviting foreigners here. Same shit happened to Portugal, Costa Rica, Bali, Phuket.
Beautiful Women in Bulgaria!
No elevators, great! keeps you healthy ;-)
Very true! Hey, there’s an up side to everything 😃
All that food looks delicious. Your family get togethers look like my families. Lots of chatter lots of food. Awesome to see the love of family.
Thank You.....
Thank YOU! 😊🌸
I really enjoy watching your videos...and learning about how life is in other parts of the world.... living on the farm...
Excellent hotel, nice hotel room ❤❤❤❤❤❤
It really is! The view was beautiful ❤️🌹🌸
I know that tram stop, that is Pl. Rutchey.
Yes! Exactly 😃
Smart. Let the herd stumble over each other as they jump off the cliff of modern chaos, pollution, noise and crime stuffing themselves into overcrowded cities. Be contrary and follow your intuition no matter what others think or do. Be happy!
So well said! The most important thing is to be happy and boy does Bulgaria make me happy 😃. Not to mention Selo (the farm) 🍇
That hotel is amongst the most expensive hotels in Sofia.
Yes, it was Jonny’s first time so we wanted to show him the best of Bulgaria. Mainly for the views. 😃
