Also, with everyone watching Last Twilight these days, I have seen comments where people are like lowkey roasting vice versa because they were suprised at how good last Twilight is, but like??? I loved vice versa and thought it was amazing?? The only problem I had with it is they didn't show enough of OhmNanon's couple

Vise Versa had more than a couple wonderful moments. I literally cried with "Jimmy's" publicly statement, 'I can live without a job, but I can't live without him.' And I cried at the Greenhouse scene '....Dah....' People tend to get 'scared at something different' as they are basically 'critical of themselves'. ((Reminds me of "2023's Unity Dance Group from BGT" both routines))
I think I am the only person who enjoyed only friends. I just love messy series, and I genuinely enjoyed Friendzone and friendzone 2. I just love watching how messy human being can be. Maybe I need therapy.

I honestly loved Only Friends too. Like you, I appreciated how messy and realistic it was. My only disappointment from this show is that I feel like there were SO many storylines and so many main characters and it just bothered me, especially since I would have to wait for the characters that I was actually interested to come back on screen. In MY opinion the show only needed SandRay and BostonNick to be successful. Those were the pairs that I had the most interest in and I was satisfied with both couples endings. Maybe that's just me tho
After I watched the first 5 EPs of Last Twilight in one sitting, I was so impressed with JimmySea that I went and finished Vice Versa in the next two days. I can still kinda see why some people hate it, but the character design & portrayal were so incredible. I fell in love with both Mhok & Puen so hard that I literally forgot to be picky about the little details. I think I, like a lot of people, went into My School President with low expectations, but now it's my GOAT. It doesn't even have any tropes that I typically enjoy, but the execution was just absolutely mind-blowing. Kinda insane considering it was P'Au's first project as a director. I didn't watch a lot of BLs this year, but I rewatched MSP twice. Now every time I think about My Love Mix-up I get so giddy (bc I love both GeminiFourth & Kieta Hatsukoi so much) that I have to remind myself to not let my expectation gets too impossibly high. 🤭

I don't think anything will ever beat My School President in my eyes. This show gave me SO MUCH joy and love and that warm happy feeling. The music is excellent, the romance is great, the vibe of this show is unmatched. I totally agree that there won't be anything like that in the near future. And honestly it was like Christmas movie for me - I got the same warm pleasant feeling as if I was watching my favourite childhood movies or Christmas movies. I rewatched it recently and the magic is still there ❤
My favorite BL of the Year ! What matters most in the end is what a particular BL or watching a BL does to you. Does it make you feel positive, entertained and believe in love ? MSP does it all and with the music which everybody can relate and like them too and I'm even not Thai but they resonate with me. When we repeat watching a BL and it still gives us that warm and joyful feeling, then for me it is very good and this beautiful experience will remain for us for e vary long time !
My School President will always have a special part in my heart. Everything about MSP is gold. I don't know how many times I rewatched it but the feeling is the same whenever I am watching it. And the soundtrack is just chef's kiss. All I can say is MSP will forever be my fave 💕💕💕 And Last Twilight goodness I really reay love this series. JimmySea's chemistry is insane. I can't wait to finish it and at the same time I don't want to end it 😭 and P'Aof once again proved how great of a director he is 💕💕💕

Stay With Me has this type of vibe to it. It was long, cheesy, had the same song play constantly, and had like no pda… yet… I couldn’t stop watching it. I felt happy watching it. I felt like I was with friends even when I was alone in my room watching. I felt comfortable. Even after finishing it a while back, I still think about it. It’s a comfort zone to me. I think that’s why it’s rated so high. Many people feel that way. I don’t know why exactly but I really do love it!
My School President is probably one of the only shows I’ve ever watched where I can go back and watch it and still feel just as amazed and fall in love with it all over again as if I’m watching it for the first time

I've been one of Vice Versa 15 fans since day one and stan everything that Sea and Jimmy do, because.... yes. Everything they do is pure magic and gold. Last Twilight raised the bar and I just love them so much. The drunk confession from I Feel You Linger In The Air. The writers knew damn well what they did by just casually airdropping that entire 1 minute confession. That was diabolical, like how dare you... my mental health. It was so fucking beautiful, I gasped and screamed.
MSP is such a brilliant series. The plot is simple but beautiful and the characters are just so good. While i was watching i felt like i am a part of them. When i saw the trailer for it and decided to watch i didn't have much expectations to begin with but it blew me away omg. The entire cast is my comfort people and i am afraid nothing in this world can replace that for me 😭. Plz last twilight is also soo good and mhok is becoming one of my favs too. my school president was SO UNIQUE plot wise ,fun wise hella different from every typical school/uni themed bls..Its the only serie after KP which deserved its popularity...😊
Finally some be my favorite love!! I watched originally just for Gawin (my king love him), but the story, Krist's acting (which has def bloomed since SOTUS), and everything just stole my heart! Tuning in to each episode was definitely a highlight of the week for me!

JomYai absolutely stole my heart hoping for a season 2💖 and I think Ming too was such a sweet character, always on Jom's side, wish to see more of him. Anyways, there's an upcoming bl series called Hidden Moon written by the same author that wrote IFYLITA and the series is shot in the same house as IFYLITA, so looking forward to it!

It can feel like it’s because they’re bls, but it’s likely because most bls aren’t very technically good😭 Like they don’t typically have good plots, or amazing production, or even good acting. I have always been a NomNom JimmySea fan since the start of Vice Versa and God how happy I am they’re given more attention and recognition now in the Last Twilight. VV had great and unique story and i kept on rewatching the series. Sad that no DVD boxset was produced but hoping for the Last Twilight. JimmySea is definitely a comfort and introvert couple. Their chemistry had always been overwhelmingly so natural and pure. They deserve all the attention, love and support they’re getting now and more. I feel you linger in the air is my number 1 this year not only for the great storyline but of everything. Actors, production, cinematography and all. I’ve read the book so many times since last year and I can’t wait for the time they finally confirm the production of season 2. I was in Bangkok when they had the latest event and the talk about season 2 was still there. Hopefully it comes true as well as they’d release the special episode over different platforms
Boss and Babe the series was effortless to watch and an underrated gem for me was "I feel you linger in the air". "Be mine superstar " was that I somehow dropped thrice and couldn't watch! But it somehow got all my favorite actors and troupe like actors life , and secret romance but somehow it didn't click and I am kinda disappointed.

Hadn't heard of it before I watched it. Until reaching Viki months after it aired, it wasn't readily available internationally. That makes it an underdog. I adored its weird sense of humor, though I am fine if others dislike it for the same reason. Plus, what can you say about a series whose characters exude '50s greaser vibes and whose colorful wardrobe makes me contemplate the unheralded role of the Costume Designer? The only thing louder than Noey's shirts are Thi's pajamas. Finally, the director of the infamous 2Gether high-five teases viewers with a series of near-miss kisses in the later episodes, then delivers a post-credit epilog in the finale that includes a right proper liplock? That's good, but chasing that smooch with a voiceover asking, "Is that good enough for you?" is just legendary. Surprise: Stay With Me and The Love Class S. 2 --> Why? Each of these series surpassed its earlier iteration. Didn't see that coming. Disappointing: The Middleman's Love edges Between Us and Dangerous Romance --> Why? Because I forgot Be Mine Superstar existed when I wrote this list originally. But also because to be a disappointment implies one had expectations that went unmet. That consideration applies to the trio above, whereas BMS never was on my radar until it aired. So, that one was less disappointing than just plain bad. Overhyped: [no vote] Happiest: If It's With You --> Why? Let's face it. Most BL exists to spark those happy pheremones; so, numerous series could land in this spot. I wanted to highlight one that isn't going to get a lot of mentions elsewhere. Best Scene of Two Men Enjoying a Casual Fling: If It's With You and Moonlight Chicken --> Why? What Only Friends failed miserably to do despite its on-point title, both Moonlight Chicken and If It's With You (notwithstanding the age gap that makes non-Japanese cringe a bit) did well in their very first episode: depict male sexual partners enjoying a casual romp in a matter-of-fact, non-judgmental way. (Note: this category isn't about rating NC scenes. It recognizes how the characters having sex treat it as a recreational activity and not as a crime or shocking event.) The scene in Moonlight Chicken when strangers Wen and Jim negotiate the terms of their tryst and the scene where Amane and his older FB discuss the discontinuation of their arrangement both capture the free-spirited side of gay sex liasions. Honorable mention to End of the World With You. Cringiest: Bump Up Business --> Why? This series felt more like multi-episode product placement for a K-pop boy band and its members than it did an authentic series. Most Thought Provoking/Most like a play in a theater/unique concept: One Room Angel --> Why? We could also call this the 180 Degrees of Longitude Passes Through Us Memorial Award, but it's such a character-driven piece that it felt like the type of play you'd watch in one of those black box Arena style theaters. Most Overlap With My Life: What Did You Eat Yesterday? S. 2 --> Why? Reading glasses? Weight gains? Phone calls about college friends dropping dead? School friends becoming grandparents? Moving parents out of their home into elder care? Estate planning? --I dealt with all those things in 2023. The only BL (BL-adjacent?) series to feature a middle-aged couple felt a little too real to me... Was it a better year? I think 2023 had fewer top tier shows than previous years. But I think the second or third tier was more reliably solid than most years. Fewer shows that dropped the ball entirely as well.
I really agree with you on Moonlight Chicken. Maybe because a lot of BL were written by Asian women who did not know real gay people but, the way they handle the sex is more like what would happen in a hetero couple. I remember a gay man saying that the steps in gay romance is usually reversed from straight romance : first casual sex, then serious relationship and the holly grail being open in public and holding hands. My favorite bl are not necessarily the best ones but I tend to rewatch the ones where both partners enjoy sex and are not afraid to say it. The bushing bride bottom is too much coded like the pure maiden. I like bodice reaper romance for my straight books but I don't read bl to get the exact same thing but with guys lol.
@@kurohebie3161 That's an interesting comment about the steps in gay romance being reversed from the standard-issue straight playbook (sex is saved for marriage/serious relationships). And I had to laugh about how for gay men holding hands in public is often endgame--only take that step if you're sure about the public exposure! (Although I think the expectations of younger queers will more closely resemble those foisted on their straight compatriots.) And, yes, I think Jim-Wen really nailed an authentic negotiation between gay men about to nail each other....probably because that script was written by a gay man. As for the presumptive bottom doubling as a stand-in for some ideal "pure maiden," I think you're onto something there as well. (For me the most egregious example in BL is Keua from Cutie Pie. That's a character patterned after numerous gender roles associated with women but played by a man. I get that everyone obsesses over actor chemistry, but the gender politics in that series are downright retrograde.) Thank you for the thought provoking and thoughtful feedback.

My favorite tonight was "Most Overlap With My Life" because the reasons anyone picks that series for that honor will differ from person to person. Which one resonated most with your life? Imagine if everyone told their story, I bet we'd have quite the range from the hilarious overlaps to the unfortunate to the tragic. Anyway, creating categories is the fun bit. My life was A WRECK during 2023 so I could barely watxh anything other than OurSkyy and NLMG. I only recently watched MSP and my heart still hurts when I remember that I did... Literally revolutionary and will never be replicated, the way I didn't give a shit about MLMU but now I'm swinging in my seat... I can't wait to be able to watch the MSP OurSkyy episodes too (although I know they're gonna be just silly nonsense idgaf) . NLMG was intense and drove me insane, I will always love you NLMG. THE VICE VERSA OURSKYYYY was actually THE CUTEST THING EVER

My School President is my top for this year (I've already watched it three times and thinking about a fourth really soon!), but Last Twilight is coming up fast. Completely agree with you: "La Pluie" until episode 6/7 has such potential, and then the series destroys itself. Such a shame. Only the BOY song could comfort me a little. BUT I will never understand the MSP Fourth/GEMINI hype. Both of them can still grow. VERY. LITL well the two as Ship were good but everything else was terrible. “Absolut Zero” and “I feel your linger in the air” were the masterpieces this year for me.
I was so happy you loved MSP because in this bl world people love skin ship more than fresh drama like MSP and many people didn't liked it...I loved BED FRIEND too but people questioned MSP views to be more than bed friend ....I think the chemistry between two people matters too not only skin ship and steamy scenes and Tinn-gun and heart-liming was some different kind of emotion for me and I became their fan after that. Favorite this year obviously '"last twilight" deserves it. they improve their acting skill and story and finally chemistry between them.
Went into Eight Sense blind as well but it was completed by then. Most of the best bls I’ve found, I found by chance without knowing anything beforehand. Loved Be My Favorite too. The Day I Loved You, I put off watching but was aware of the hype. I’m so glad I watched it. It was the biggest pleasant surprise of the year for me. It has so much spunk. I wasn’t sure about Stay With Me after the first few episodes but once they found their own voice/story, I fell in love with it. 🙂 Only friends is one of those shows I did not like but think it wholly deserves its rating/popularity. It was just not for me. Jun & Jun is the ‘unpopular’ bl that I loved. It’s my 2023 guilty pleasure. I’ve yet to watch IFYLITA. Babe from The Sign is the actor I discovered this year. I can’t believe he’s new to acting. Absolute Zero was the biggest let down of the year. It had so much potential. We’d have to agree to disagree about Star Struck. Personally I didn’t love My School President like others did. I liked it but I didn’t love it. I love, love, love Last Twilight. Overall 2023 was a terrible year for bls but there were some absolute gems. I think the quality of bls got better in the second half of the year. Some of the best ones are still ongoing.
I actually really don’t like to Be My Favorite. Especially when it comes to their queer representation. Don’t get me wrong, I really like their queer representation in most ways. The visibility is amazing and having characters speak so openly about being queer and how being queer identity affects their life is great. But I think they did a good job on the representation when it came to mainstream queer identities. As someone who’s asexual, there was an episode midway through that made me rage quit. The fact that the show implies that being asexual doesn’t exist and those who feel like they’re asexual just need to sleep with someone and get over their trepidations and they’ll be ‘fixed’ felt like a slap in the face. Especially coming from Max, the character in the series who was the most open minded and openly queer. The show had a chance of having an asexual main character, but instead it reinforces negative asexual stereotypes, forced its character to have sex, and spat in the face of asexuals and the asexual community
Why did you decide that Kavi is asexual? In the original novel and in the series, he was not asexual, he was simply afraid and shy to have sex for the first time. I remember how I behaved when I had sex for the first time, I was very afraid and embarrassed, I didn’t want to rush, I delayed this process for a long time and I was sad for my boyfriend that he was waiting, but he was understanding. The entire series, Kavi was a shy, not social, lonely person who had never dated or kissed anyone, and it was scary for him to accept and confess his love for a guy. The series wanted to show that it’s normal when you’re shy and afraid to have sex for the first time, but if you’re with the right person who understands you, loves you, and whom you love, then everything will be fine. And when they showed their bed scene, at first Kavi was nervous, but then after kissing he smiled and then he took the initiative to kiss and then he was happy and he wanted to do it . Don't worry, GMMTV has already shown asexual characters in Warp Effect and Friendzone 2.

In Thailand know his whole story, how he and his girlfriend were harassed with questions about his orientation and some people mocked him for starring in a gay series in the past. He just wanted people to stop doing this and stop flattery into his personal life and he responded rudely. Thai people know about his friendship with LGBT people and that he is an ally. After all, the main thing is that he has gay and transgenders friends, they love him and they protected him. He always showed support for the community and his friends in social media and events. Krist is also friends with trans actresses Jenny and Goji. Especially with Goji, she supported him, since she is much older than him, she calls him son, and he calls her mom. He also became a much better actor, in Be My Favorite he was better than in Sotus and it is clear that he was much more pleasant and comfortable. And Gawin and Krist's chemistry was amazing, made even better by the fact that they became good friends. They became so close that they said they are family. They still hang out and met each other often, despite the fact that Gawin has a new BL partner. It's nice to see a healthy friendship and that's why they had such great chemistry on the show. But they will most likely continue to be a musical duo because they themselves said that they will continue to write songs together and they enjoy performing together on stage. Also many people liked it when they sang together on stage. I like the GMM family, there are a lot of actors who are friends with each other and have good relationships. About Krist, his friends, colleagues, people with whom he worked, people who met him, fans always said only good things about him, how kind and sweet he is.
Krist is a sweetheart and he redeemed himself for whatever he said so many years ago, but ppl tend to judge him for everything and even after sooo many years they are still judging him. Ppl forget he didn't commit any murder or something worse and he has asked sorry million times. But ppl think they're soo much better to let him live his life

Omfg finally someone who doesn’t like OnlyFriends, it’s so rushed and slow at the same time, everything is so damn toxic, the only couple I didn’t mind was the GL who probably got 10 minutes out of the whole damn series, the only thing that kept me watching it was the cinematography. It’s awful.
i was just watching this video with no interest until only friends came. BRO YOU'RE SO RIGHTTT the only watchable thing was ray and sand's chemistry and except it everything was straight up BAD. like BAD BAD. it was so overhyped for no reason. mostly maybe because of attractive cast and explicit scenes but bro it was really bad. only ray and sand made me watch it till the end and i found myself skipping everything except their scenes.
this is me answering all the questions because im insane: 1. what was an underdog bl of the year? %100 be my favourite, i was so shocked no one was talking about it but also it was being overshadowed by the large hype of only friends that was coming after it. I'm such a fan of Gawin as his acting in Not Me was the another shine in the gold that was that show. Spectacular show. 2. what was a bl that surprised you? Oddly, A Boss and a Babe. Of course there was that weird plot line i basically skipped over cause it added nothing and made the show weird but other than that i loved the acting and the chemistry between force and book. Went in expecting mediocrity, came out with pretty above average stuff that i enjoyed. 3. what was the most disappointing bl of the year? TOTALLY AGREE WITH BETWEEN US. I could write and ESSAY on how much wabi sabi was gone down hill these past years. Until We Meet Again was one of my first bls and solidified my expectations of what was to come. Of course looking back UWMA has its flaws, but Between Us was UNWATCHABLE. Other than that... maybe unintentional love story? so unforgettable and BORING! KOREA WHATS GOING ON. 4. What was an overhyped bl? As someone who had a hyperfixation on this drama, Only Friends was defo overhyped. I cannot tell u if it was bad or not i was insanely in my own head while watching, but honestly the cast carried the plot HARDDD. 100% reccomend watching The Ampliverse reviews on the show they are super funny and talk a lot about queer perspective. 5. what bl made you the happiest? never ever gonna stop cheesing at 'Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo'. boy, I'm debating if I should try to rewatch MSP for the 3rd time. I really didn't like it but people I respect did, so I rewatched it once again. Still didn't like it. I love Last Twighlight and The Sign. Also Stay With me. Couldn't finish Bed Friend. Only Friends was ok, but only because of how much I liked FirstKhaotung. I couldn't get past the first few episodes of more than a few shows this year. sigh. I thought Love Tractor was cute. I did not like MoonLight Chicken. Boyband was appallingly bad. Between Us was terrible. They should have ditched it. Boun and Prem give too much fan service for actors who have failed to make a single series in which they are leads, and their acting is believable. La Pluie lost its way after episode 2. The plot was a complete mess. I Feel You Linger in the Air was lovely, but the ending sucked. It was like eating a delicious piece of peach pie, and then in the last bite, you crunch down on a pit. Seriously, the ending felt rushed and made me wonder if they suddenly ran out of budget. For that reason alone, it is in third place. So, the winner for 2023 is MSP, a bl drama I was not going to watch because it takes place in a high school setting. But to my delight, it was so wonderful, it made other bl dramas pale in comparison. In 2nd place is Last Twilight, which is currently airing. And what do these 2 BLs have in common? P'Aof. The man is a genius. I would expect nothing less from the man who brought us Bad Buddy. Happy New Year!!! 🎉
I was disappointed so much in Between Us... I just didn’t like it. I love BounPrem, and I love Win and Team even more, but oh my... it was bad. I hated that they squeezed in so many couples, I felt like the pace wasn't great either, even if it was for WinTeam I had a feeling, I didn't see them enough...

I don’t understand how people like it so much like it was so typical and so boring 😫 they just wanted to show pretty faces because there was absolutely no plot nor a single moment were I got excited about the 2 MC interactions. I think this video you make for telling people how you love "my love president". But for me I dropped this series after few eps. I just don't like it eventhough the actor I like it. And the korean series isn't that terrible. Like Shoulders to cry on. They follow the manga plot. I know why many people confused. I didn't like GawinKrist at all and Be My Favorite was a huge struggle to get through. Between Us. Sigh. Good first ep, then it spiraled. JimmySea and BillyBabe are two of my favorites this year. The first ep of Laws of Attraction turned me off so bad I couldn't finished the rest. I tried multiple times.

I honestly loved Only Friends too. Like you, I appreciated how messy and realistic it was. My only disappointment from this show is that I feel like there were SO many storylines and so many main characters and it just bothered me, especially since I would have to wait for the characters that I was actually interested to come back on screen. In MY opinion the show only needed SandRay and BostonNick to be successful. Those were the pairs that I had the most interest in and I was satisfied with both couples endings. Maybe that's just me tho
After I watched the first 5 EPs of Last Twilight in one sitting, I was so impressed with JimmySea that I went and finished Vice Versa in the next two days. I can still kinda see why some people hate it, but the character design & portrayal were so incredible. I fell in love with both Mhok & Puen so hard that I literally forgot to be picky about the little details.
I think I, like a lot of people, went into My School President with low expectations, but now it's my GOAT. It doesn't even have any tropes that I typically enjoy, but the execution was just absolutely mind-blowing. Kinda insane considering it was P'Au's first project as a director. I didn't watch a lot of BLs this year, but I rewatched MSP twice. Now every time I think about My Love Mix-up I get so giddy (bc I love both GeminiFourth & Kieta Hatsukoi so much) that I have to remind myself to not let my expectation gets too impossibly high. 🤭

I don't think anything will ever beat My School President in my eyes. This show gave me SO MUCH joy and love and that warm happy feeling. The music is excellent, the romance is great, the vibe of this show is unmatched. I totally agree that there won't be anything like that in the near future. And honestly it was like Christmas movie for me - I got the same warm pleasant feeling as if I was watching my favourite childhood movies or Christmas movies. I rewatched it recently and the magic is still there ❤

My favorite BL of the Year ! What matters most in the end is what a particular BL or watching a BL does to you. Does it make you feel positive, entertained and believe in love ? MSP does it all and with the music which everybody can relate and like them too and I'm even not Thai but they resonate with me. When we repeat watching a BL and it still gives us that warm and joyful feeling, then for me it is very good and this beautiful experience will remain for us for e vary long time !

Stay With Me has this type of vibe to it. It was long, cheesy, had the same song play constantly, and had like no pda… yet… I couldn’t stop watching it. I felt happy watching it. I felt like I was with friends even when I was alone in my room watching. I felt comfortable. Even after finishing it a while back, I still think about it. It’s a comfort zone to me. I think that’s why it’s rated so high. Many people feel that way. I don’t know why exactly but I really do love it!

Finally some be my favorite love!! I watched originally just for Gawin (my king love him), but the story, Krist's acting (which has def bloomed since SOTUS), and everything just stole my heart! Tuning in to each episode was definitely a highlight of the week for me!

I have always been a NomNom JimmySea fan since the start of Vice Versa and God how happy I am they’re given more attention and recognition now in the Last Twilight. VV had great and unique story and i kept on rewatching the series. Sad that no DVD boxset was produced but hoping for the Last Twilight. JimmySea is definitely a comfort and introvert couple. Their chemistry had always been overwhelmingly so natural and pure. They deserve all the attention, love and support they’re getting now and more.
I feel you linger in the air is my number 1 this year not only for the great storyline but of everything. Actors, production, cinematography and all. I’ve read the book so many times since last year and I can’t wait for the time they finally confirm the production of season 2. I was in Bangkok when they had the latest event and the talk about season 2 was still there. Hopefully it comes true as well as they’d release the special episode over different platforms

Plus, what can you say about a series whose characters exude '50s greaser vibes and whose colorful wardrobe makes me contemplate the unheralded role of the Costume Designer? The only thing louder than Noey's shirts are Thi's pajamas. Finally, the director of the infamous 2Gether high-five teases viewers with a series of near-miss kisses in the later episodes, then delivers a post-credit epilog in the finale that includes a right proper liplock? That's good, but chasing that smooch with a voiceover asking, "Is that good enough for you?" is just legendary.

Best Scene of Two Men Enjoying a Casual Fling: If It's With You and Moonlight Chicken
--> Why? What Only Friends failed miserably to do despite its on-point title, both Moonlight Chicken and If It's With You (notwithstanding the age gap that makes non-Japanese cringe a bit) did well in their very first episode: depict male sexual partners enjoying a casual romp in a matter-of-fact, non-judgmental way. (Note: this category isn't about rating NC scenes. It recognizes how the characters having sex treat it as a recreational activity and not as a crime or shocking event.) The scene in Moonlight Chicken when strangers Wen and Jim negotiate the terms of their tryst and the scene where Amane and his older FB discuss the discontinuation of their arrangement both capture the free-spirited side of gay sex liasions. --> Why? Reading glasses? Weight gains? Phone calls about college friends dropping dead? School friends becoming grandparents? Moving parents out of their home into elder care? Estate planning? --I dealt with all those things in 2023. The only BL (BL-adjacent?) series to feature a middle-aged couple felt a little too real to me...
Was it a better year? I think 2023 had fewer top tier shows than previous years. But I think the second or third tier was more reliably solid than most years. Fewer shows that dropped the ball entirely as well.

I really agree with you on Moonlight Chicken. Maybe because a lot of BL were written by Asian women who did not know real gay people but, the way they handle the sex is more like what would happen in a hetero couple. I remember a gay man saying that the steps in gay romance is usually reversed from straight romance : first casual sex, then serious relationship and the holly grail being open in public and holding hands.
My favorite bl are not necessarily the best ones but I tend to rewatch the ones where both partners enjoy sex and are not afraid to say it. The bushing bride bottom is too much coded like the pure maiden. I like bodice reaper romance for my straight books but I don't read bl to get the exact same thing but with guys lol.
@@kurohebie3161 That's an interesting comment about the steps in gay romance being reversed from the standard-issue straight playbook (sex is saved for marriage/serious relationships). And I had to laugh about how for gay men holding hands in public is often endgame--only take that step if you're sure about the public exposure! (Although I think the expectations of younger queers will more closely resemble those foisted on their straight compatriots.) And, yes, I think Jim-Wen really nailed an authentic negotiation between gay men about to nail each other....probably because that script was written by a gay man. As for the presumptive bottom doubling as a stand-in for some ideal "pure maiden," I think you're onto something there as well. (For me the most egregious example in BL is Keua from Cutie Pie. That's a character patterned after numerous gender roles associated with women but played by a man. I get that everyone obsesses over actor chemistry, but the gender politics in that series are downright retrograde.) Thank you for the thought provoking and thoughtful feedback.

Here, I enjoyed the mix of the silly throwaway category (Best Pajamas) with those that are useful (Best Depiction of Sex--Not as NC but as a representation of queer life). My favorite tonight was "Most Overlap With My Life" because the reasons anyone picks that series for that honor will differ from person to person. Which one resonated most with your life? Imagine if everyone told their story, I bet we'd have quite the range from the hilarious overlaps to the unfortunate to the tragic.

My life was A WRECK during 2023 so I could barely watxh anything other than OurSkyy and NLMG. I only recently watched MSP and my heart still hurts when I remember that I did... Literally revolutionary and will never be replicated, the way I didn't give a shit about MLMU but now I'm swinging in my seat... I can't wait to be able to watch the MSP OurSkyy episodes too (although I know they're gonna be just silly nonsense idgaf) . NLMG was intense and drove me insane, I will always love you NLMG. My School President is my top for this year (I've already watched it three times and thinking about a fourth really soon!), but Last Twilight is coming up fast. I absolutely loved Vice Versa so I'm extremely happy about everything JimmySea. City cover by GeminiFourth was also my top song of the year! So, so good!

Completely agree with you: "La Pluie" until episode 6/7 has such potential, and then the series destroys itself. Such a shame. Only the BOY song could comfort me a little. BUT I will never understand the MSP Fourth/GEMINI hype. Both of them can still grow. VERY. LITL well the two as Ship were good but everything else was terrible.
“Absolut Zero” and “I feel your linger in the air” were the masterpieces this year for me.
I was so happy you loved MSP because in this bl world people love skin ship more than fresh drama like MSP and many people didn't liked it...I loved BED FRIEND too but people questioned MSP views to be more than bed friend ....I think the chemistry between two people matters too not only skin ship and steamy scenes and Tinn-gun and heart-liming was some different kind of emotion for me and I became their fan after that. Favorite this year obviously '"last twilight" deserves it. they improve their acting skill and story and finally chemistry between them.
I'm feeling a little upset that "Cry for star" ost from absolute zero in not included.....cause it's my current favorite ost that makes my day.
Went into Eight Sense blind as well but it was completed by then. Most of the best bls I’ve found, I found by chance without knowing anything beforehand. Loved Be My Favorite too. The Day I Loved You, I put off watching but was aware of the hype. I’m so glad I watched it. It was the biggest pleasant surprise of the year for me. It has so much spunk. I wasn’t sure about Stay With Me after the first few episodes but once they found their own voice/story, I fell in love with it. 🙂 Only friends is one of those shows I did not like but think it wholly deserves its rating/popularity. It was just not for me.
Jun & Jun is the ‘unpopular’ bl that I loved. It’s my 2023 guilty pleasure. I’ve yet to watch IFYLITA. Babe from The Sign is the actor I discovered this year. I can’t believe he’s new to acting. Absolute Zero was the biggest let down of the year. It had so much potential. We’d have to agree to disagree about Star Struck. Personally I didn’t love My School President like others did. I liked it but I didn’t love it. I love, love, love Last Twilight. Overall 2023 was a terrible year for bls but there were some absolute gems. I think the quality of bls got better in the second half of the year. Some of the best ones are still ongoing.

I actually really don’t like to Be My Favorite. Especially when it comes to their queer representation. Don’t get me wrong, I really like their queer representation in most ways. The visibility is amazing and having characters speak so openly about being queer and how being queer identity affects their life is great. But I think they did a good job on the representation when it came to mainstream queer identities. As someone who’s asexual, there was an episode midway through that made me rage quit. The fact that the show implies that being asexual doesn’t exist and those who feel like they’re asexual just need to sleep with someone and get over their trepidations and they’ll be ‘fixed’ felt like a slap in the face. Especially coming from Max, the character in the series who was the most open minded and openly queer. The show had a chance of having an asexual main character, but instead it reinforces negative asexual stereotypes, forced its character to have sex, and spat in the face of asexuals and the asexual community
Why did you decide that Kavi is asexual? In the original novel and in the series, he was not asexual, he was simply afraid and shy to have sex for the first time. I remember how I behaved when I had sex for the first time, I was very afraid and embarrassed, I didn’t want to rush, I delayed this process for a long time and I was sad for my boyfriend that he was waiting, but he was understanding. The entire series, Kavi was a shy, not social, lonely person who had never dated or kissed anyone, and it was scary for him to accept and confess his love for a guy. The series wanted to show that it’s normal when you’re shy and afraid to have sex for the first time, but if you’re with the right person who understands you, loves you, and whom you love, then everything will be fine. And when they showed their bed scene, at first Kavi was nervous, but then after kissing he smiled and then he took the initiative to kiss and then he was happy and he wanted to do it . Don't worry, GMMTV has already shown asexual characters in Warp Effect and Friendzone 2.

And how do you feel about Krist? Krist is not homophobic, he is a good person. I live in Thailand and Krist has a lot of LGBT fans here, I'm bisexual myself. In Thailand know his whole story, how he and his girlfriend were harassed with questions about his orientation and some people mocked him for starring in a gay series in the past. He just wanted people to stop doing this and stop flattery into his personal life and he responded rudely. Thai people know about his friendship with LGBT people and that he is an ally. After all, the main thing is that he has gay and transgenders friends, they love him and they protected him. He always showed support for the community and his friends in social media and events. Krist is also friends with trans actresses Jenny and Goji. Especially with Goji, she supported him, since she is much older than him, she calls him son, and he calls her mom. He also became a much better actor, in Be My Favorite he was better than in Sotus and it is clear that he was much more pleasant and comfortable. And Gawin and Krist's chemistry was amazing, made even better by the fact that they became good friends. They became so close that they said they are family. They still hang out and met each other often, despite the fact that Gawin has a new BL partner. It's nice to see a healthy friendship and that's why they had such great chemistry on the show. But they will most likely continue to be a musical duo because they themselves said that they will continue to write songs together and they enjoy performing together on stage. Also many people liked it when they sang together on stage. I like the GMM family, there are a lot of actors who are friends with each other and have good relationships. About Krist, his friends, colleagues, people with whom he worked, people who met him, fans always said only good things about him, how kind and sweet he is.
Krist is a sweetheart and he redeemed himself for whatever he said so many years ago, but ppl tend to judge him for everything and even after sooo many years they are still judging him. Ppl forget he didn't commit any murder or something worse and he has asked sorry million times. But ppl think they're soo much better to let him live his life

That being said, I really enjoyed watching this video! I haven't watched that many BLs this year, but My School President and Moonlight Chicken were my favorite ones. I don't know if you've watched or heard of these since you didn't mention them in the video, but I personally liked Jack o' Frost and If It's With You, as well. They are very short, but they are well written, in my opinion. And they are really easy to binge.

Omfg finally someone who doesn’t like OnlyFriends, it’s so rushed and slow at the same time, everything is so damn toxic, the only couple I didn’t mind was the GL who probably got 10 minutes out of the whole damn series, the only thing that kept me watching it was the cinematography. It’s awful.
The 25 Vice Versa fans had a great year. PuenTalay (+Jigsaw) and MhokDay all in a matter of a few months? JimmSea stans are WINNING.

i was just watching this video with no interest until only friends came. BRO YOU'RE SO RIGHTTT the only watchable thing was ray and sand's chemistry and except it everything was straight up BAD. like BAD BAD. it was so overhyped for no reason. mostly maybe because of attractive cast and explicit scenes but bro it was really bad. only ray and sand made me watch it till the end and i found myself skipping everything except their scenes.

1. what was an underdog bl of the year?
%100 be my favourite, i was so shocked no one was talking about it but also it was being overshadowed by the large hype of only friends that was coming after it. I'm such a fan of Gawin as his acting in Not Me was the another shine in the gold that was that show. Spectacular show.
2. what was a bl that surprised you?
Oddly, A Boss and a Babe. Of course there was that weird plot line i basically skipped over cause it added nothing and made the show weird but other than that i loved the acting and the chemistry between force and book. Went in expecting mediocrity, came out with pretty above average stuff that i enjoyed.
3. what was the most disappointing bl of the year?
TOTALLY AGREE WITH BETWEEN US. I could write and ESSAY on how much wabi sabi was gone down hill these past years. Until We Meet Again was one of my first bls and solidified my expectations of what was to come. Of course looking back UWMA has its flaws, but Between Us was UNWATCHABLE. Other than that... maybe unintentional love story? so unforgettable and BORING! KOREA WHATS GOING ON.
4. What was an overhyped bl?
As someone who had a hyperfixation on this drama, Only Friends was defo overhyped. I cannot tell u if it was bad or not i was insanely in my own head while watching, but honestly the cast carried the plot HARDDD. 100% reccomend watching The Ampliverse reviews on the show they are super funny and talk a lot about queer perspective.
5. what bl made you the happiest?
never ever gonna stop cheesing at 'Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo'. Short sweet, so cute, acting so fluid and refreshing. One of my favoirite AOT. And ofc Eighth Sense the most amazing show hands down ive watched
6. what was the cringiest bl of the year?
oooofff couldnt get throufg Bed Friend. I was fighting for my LIFE!

End of the world with you. People dont really like this drama cause its quite explicit but fuck it the plot is so good i love it. I love the open ending, i love the relationships between the characters. IDC IDC ITS A BIT OF A COMFORT SHOW.

Tbh I think are more disappointing bl series that the quality one. Disappointing For him, La pluie, Dinosaur love ( I don't know how I made to watch all ep), Jun and Jun, A shoulder to cry on ( I think it's not a bl it's a bro), Rich handsome, Love syndrome 3 ( great potential but it flop), Past-senger, Only friends ( oh God the serie had no story it made no sense not to mention the n scenes between Top and Mew really cringe), Bed friends ( what's happening with DMD from bad to really bad series), Between us .....etc
Quality series Moonlight chicken, MSP, The eight sense, IFULITA, Law of attraction ( the effects could be better), Our dating sim, Stay with me, Our dining table, The sign, Last twilight, Pitbabe ( had some potential if the story evolve more).
I do agree about Only Friends, it was very fun to watch and yes entertaining, but honestly as a bl… it’s not great

boy, I'm debating if I should try to rewatch MSP for the 3rd time. I really didn't like it but people I respect did, so I rewatched it once again. Still didn't like it. I love Last Twighlight and The Sign. Also Stay With me. Couldn't finish Bed Friend. Only Friends was ok, but only because of how much I liked FirstKhaotung. I couldn't get past the first few episodes of more than a few shows this year. sigh. I thought Love Tractor was cute. I did not like MoonLight Chicken. Boyband was appallingly bad. Chains of Heart was muddled and boring. So many bad shows. Kiseki Dear to Me was good.

Between Us was terrible. They should have ditched it. Boun and Prem give too much fan service for actors who have failed to make a single series in which they are leads, and their acting is believable. La Pluie lost its way after episode 2. The plot was a complete mess. I Feel You Linger in the Air was lovely, but the ending sucked. It was like eating a delicious piece of peach pie, and then in the last bite, you crunch down on a pit. Seriously, the ending felt rushed and made me wonder if they suddenly ran out of budget. For that reason alone, it is in third place. So, the winner for 2023 is MSP, a bl drama I was not going to watch because it takes place in a high school setting. But to my delight, it was so wonderful, it made other bl dramas pale in comparison. In 2nd place is Last Twilight, which is currently airing. And what do these 2 BLs have in common? P'Aof. The man is a genius. I would expect nothing less from the man who brought us Bad Buddy. Happy New Year!!! 🎉

I was disappointed so much in Between Us... I just didn’t like it. I love BounPrem, and I love Win and Team even more, but oh my... it was bad. I hated that they squeezed in so many couples, I felt like the pace wasn't great either, even if it was for WinTeam I had a feeling, I didn't see them enough...

Omg I’m so glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like jun&jun. I don’t understand how people like it so much like it was so typical and so boring 😫 they just wanted to show pretty faces because there was absolutely no plot nor a single moment were I got excited about the 2 MC interactions. I kind of just got tired of this kind of shows tbh. same with love tractor, it was funnier, but also had poor development or a good and entertaining plot.
