The monotone vastness of sameness and the scant variation makes the mind slowly become hypnotized, sedate and tame when at sea. This is the image that captivates me... I've thought about going into the military, particularly the Navy, despite many in my family being Army. It just seems to match my skills of geography, culture, etc. I may never know unless things really boil to a head with Russia/China soon and we get a world war or some kind of conflict. I feel like I could be a Marine and have a better time than being a Sailor, but who am I to know? I just don't like the idea of being locked below deck for days at a time, I need sunlight. The views of the ocean and its majesty are certainly what I'd hope to see though, and all my Navy research indicates that this is the major draw and image for recruiting Sailors. I think I could be a good Sailor. I've lived through so much world history in just over 25 years that I wouldn't be surprised if we had a major conflict like WWII where I'd get to serve.

I used to live on the Island of Puerto Rico. We never lived over 2 blocks from the Atlantic and it's power, it's energy and it's calmness were all very amazing to watch and hear or feel when we used to go swimming with the people of our neighborhood in Ocean Park, then hang out together on the beach when it got dark. I loved being able to hear the ocean and we never seemed to be far from it on that tiny island. The ocean was magnificent during hurricanes!

I had that fear too. I remember my first cruise and how I had to persuaded by family to go. Well I did and now have taken 17 cruises so far - and always a room with a balcony. Sitting on the balcony on a nice sunny day is just so relaxing and amazing as you watch the ripples and waves of the ocean. And yes, the water looks black, and nothing like the blue or turquoise colors you see near shorelines. At nights it's a bit scary as you look out into the blackness of the night, with the exception of when you see the lights of another cruise ship passing by, or the lights of some country way out in the distance.
