    Activity 7.1a
In relation to care practice, describe what is meant by the terms privacy and dignity.
    Activity 7.1b
As a healthcare support worker or adult social care worker, you will be providing care to individuals who have a range of different needs, wishes and preferences and in situations which may be sensitive, personal or challenging. In the table below, list situations where an individual’s privacy and dignity could be compromised and then for each one describe how you would maintain their privacy and dignity. An example has been provided for you.
    Activity 7.2c
It is essential that you do not disclose anything about an individual that they wish to be kept private, unless it is appropriate to do so. Explain why this is so important. You could include the aspects of a person’s life in the grey boxes in your answer.
    Activity 7.3a
There are a number of ways that you can help individuals to make informed choices. Describe three different ways in the boxes below. An example has been provided for you.
    Activity 7.3b & 7.3c
Risk taking, risk assessment and risk enablement are three terms that you should be familiar with as a care worker. Familiarise yourself with these terms and answer the two questions below.
    Activity 7.3d
Part i) For each of the statements below, decide whether you need to support the individual to question or challenge the decision.
Part ii) Thinking about the statements above, describe why you would need to support individuals to question or challenge decisions made about them by others. Include the following in your answer: Confidence, self-esteem, person-centred care, empower
    Activity 7.4d
As part of your duty of care, you have a responsibility to support individuals to question or challenge the decisions that are made about them by others, especially if these decisions have been made without their involvement or consent. For the two examples below, state how you would support the individuals to question or challenge the decision and also describe how you would report your concerns to a relevant person.
    Activity 7.5a, 7.5b and 7.5d
Part i) Valuing the individuals you care for and support makes a very important contribution to encouraging active participation. Complete the table below to show how you can support active participation for the individual involved:
Part ii) Describe the importance of how valuing individuals, such as the one above, helps to contribute to and encourage active participation. You could use the example to help you describe your points.
    Activity 7.5c
Complete the diagram below to list other ways you can use to support active participation.
    Activity 7.6b
Self-awareness and reflection is an essential part of your care practice and being aware of your own attitudes and beliefs can help you to make sure the quality of your work is not affected negatively. Produce a written account to show how your personal views could restrict the individual’s ability to actively participate in their care.

Hey Daniel, I am a new subscriber! I found your site by pure chance and thank you ever so much!
When you carry out an individual Risk assessment, the alternative options you present to the resident is that the same as control measures? E.g Let us assume, someone with a mobility issue and wants to walk without a member of staff, but the risk of falling is very high. Therefore, carry out Risk assessment and identify and present alternative options which will allow the person to walk, eg use walking stick, frame. The resident agrees to walk using a walking stick. The options walking stick and frame are these examples of control measures? I am a little confused here and a little clarification would be very grateful.
    Cheers!

Yes, control measures are the actions that you take to reduce or eliminate risk.

Hello there, can you please help me with this example. Lets say that a resident has been recently diagnosed with high cholesterol and medication (statins) needs to be started. In the care home setting between the carer and resident. The resident is not sure whether he wants to take the medication or not. Therefore, the carer supports the resident to make an informed decision of whether to take the medication or not by going through all the options along with their associated benefits and risks etc. Is this an example of "shared" or "supported" decision making?

Yes, it is. Check out this article for more info about SDM (with a link to NHS guidance). dsdweb.co.uk/level-5-diploma-in-leadership/decision-making-in-adult-care/providing-support-to-engage-others-in-the-decision-making-process/

Please help: What is the difference between the risk assessment steps between what you have written on your dsdweb site section 7.3b and section 13.2a? I am confused because section 7.3b format you list the pros as well as the cons of the risk, whereas it seems in the HSE risk assessment, you do not list any pros? Lets say dementia resident wants to go out alone to the shops, what RA will happen secion 7 or 13 example? PLEASE PLEASE HELP AND THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH !

Sometimes there aren't any pros, you just have to use common sense. If you do an environmental risk assessment and notice a frayed carpet that could cause a tripping hazard, there is no pro to keeping it that way. However, when you are performing risk assessments with individuals then you have to respect their right to take risks because their can be benefits from doing so. In your example, the resident going to the shops could have benefits such as maintaining some independence, getting exercise, social interactions and helping them to feel free and in control, which can help their physical and mental health. This has to be weighed against the risks, such as getting lost or becoming confused, which will be unique to the individual. Then steps can be put in place to minimise these risks as much as possible. So, you may agree with them to wear a GPS locator or to have staff accompany them or to let staff know how long they will be gone for. Again it will be unique to the individual's needs and preferences.

@@CareCertificate Oh gosh, you are awesome, are you a teacher or something? You have a way of explaining things so clear and concisely.
Basically, you are saying that in "ENVIRONMENTAL" RAs, you would follow section 13.2a (i.e list risk, control measures and no altenative options part, correct? and for specific task or activity related RAs (individualised) then you follow the section 7.3b format. Which includes pros and cons of honouring choice, alternative options to reduce risks, enabling resident to make informed decision, yes?

Not quite sure what you mean but I'd suggest that grey matter learning would be the best people to ask.
