Royal Enfield Bullet Electra Motorcycle - Weird Model Year. Should I have?

- I took a chance on a transition AVL model 2008 RE Bullet Electra. It is NOT an Iron Barrel but Aluminum. However it is has a carburetor and disc brake. Do I like it? Its Flighty.

This is a pre-unit construction engine. The engine, clutch and 5speed gearbox are seperate units bolted together.
It's called the AVL engine. Because it was made by AVL, Austria.
It is also called the LB(Lean burn) 500. In India it was sold as the Machismo 500. In the UK and the US it was sold as the Electra X.
Most people didn't like this engine much because of it's sewing machine like mechanical clatter. It was constantly being compared to the Cast iron that came before it.
IMHO this is one of the best engines RE ever made.
Great run down! I owned an iron barrel, AVL, UCE, and the new 350 motors. They are all unique and I like them all. :D
Well done with your purchase! The bike you have is what you correctly described as a "lean burn" engine. Aluminium head and barrel, high capacity oil pump, 5 speed (separate) gearbox, front disc brake, electronic ignition. Its the "AVL" engine designed in Austria for Royal Enfield. I have the same model.
The bike will not run with the side stand down (even in neutral). They are known for the Electric starting issues, its normally the sprag (one way) clutch in the primary casing fails, this is when the engine is switched off and tries to turn the wrong way breaking it. stop it by using the decompressor (valve lifter) on the L/H switchgear. Nice bike!
Thanks, yes, I’m totally liking this Bullet. The AVL engine has a different feel then any iron barrel or ECE motor I’ve rode. I like it! Yes, this bike had bad stating too lol, good thing it kicks good! Thanks for the sidestand info, I didn’t know that and it was driving me nuts! Best part is how well it stops, great binders. Great advice, and your stats are spot on! I have an iron barrel and I always use the decompressor to stop the engine.
Sweet. Looks gorgeous after a little TLC. That RE idle is a very tranquil, soothing tone that I say sounds like my gramma running her commercial Singer sewing machine.

The term, "UCE" means "Unit Construction;" where the engine and transmission are in one casting. Your Bullet has a 5 speed Albion Trans. The transmission is separate from the engine.
100% I realized in my excitement of getting the bike I said UCE instead of AVL. That is why in the first sentence in the description of this video I stated, “I took a chance on a transition AVL model 2008 RE Bullet Electra. It is NOT an Iron Barrel but Aluminum.” I’ve actually had 6 iron barrels, 2 UCE’s, 1 Modern 350 and now an AVL. All different, unique and have pluses and minuses :)

A couple of times you refer to it a a UCE engine. It's not, it's a high compression, lean burning version of the old engine, but with an aluminium barrel. Enjoy 😀

Great video, but it's definitely not a UCE motor, it's the old design but with an aluminium barrel. The UCE engine is totally different. I own both models, a UCE and an iron barrel. Both great bikes though.
