I had a funny encounter as a black guy on vacation in japan. I was at the Ginkaku-ji Temple I had 2 Japanese parents ask me to take a picture with their daughter. They must have thought I was a celebrity. I thought it was cute so I went along with it haha. But I did get alot of stares while in Japan, but I usually wave back at people who stare and their faces light up and they smile and wave back. They are mostly curious thats all. But I never experienced any racism. One elderly man on the subway asked where I was from in english, and ended up giving me a hug when I got off the train. I really would love to go back there again someday.

No it's not. I've been a few times for extended periods and never felt any hint of racism. Like the entire world, it's homogeneous and xenophobic. The problem is black americans don't have a country to be xenophobic about and can't tell the difference.

I’m African-American and I live in Japan and married to a Japanese woman. You are dead wrong and way off base. They’re not racist or act anywhere near what you’re thinking. American/European media has taught us that all Asian countries hate us and they love white people which is completely false. While most do like white people, that is slowly shrinking as more Asian women are becoming drawn to black and Latino men. Japan specifically doesn’t have racism, though they do have some discrimination.

I know it’s a Japanese culture thing but just as a reminder Black people aren’t a monolith. Not every black person falls under the same umbrella of characteristics and personality traits. Black people are people are individual people just like you not just spectacles to view from afar. I know that different cultures and the people from them view other races in a different light but just reiterating that everyone is individually different. Hopefully I didn’t offend anyone but it is true.

I think as a black American myself and my group are so used to being different being synonymous with negative interactions that when we go other places we mistake intrigue or caution with hate. When i visited japan I HAD POWER OVER MY EXPERIENCE. So instead of believing the worst and letting that effect my behavior which thus would effect the behavior of those around me, i didnt make assumptions and displayed a positive attitude. Random people asked me for pictures, some paid for my food or drinks when i went out. Had wonderful cultural exchanges and answered questions about my culture and they did the same. Granted im 6’5 so my size and build possibly contributed but overall it was a good experience. We must grow past out trauma and give everyone an opportunity to prove themselves. And understand our reality is a NEW reality in comparison to the rest of the world and how they think

8 years lived in Japan. I love Japan, I suggest to everyone to visit it but, from my experience, Japan is a bit too romanticized and almost even “otherized” in a positive way by american/western ppl. Many people in Japan may not realize that what they're saying is xenophobic because they've never seen that kind of behavior being criticized. For example, racial profiling by police is a documented issue, with minority residents frequently subjected to identity checks based on their appearance. Discrimination in housing and employment is also common, with reports of landlords refusing to rent to foreigners and companies preferring Japanese nationals over equally or more qualified foreigners. However, the level of racism and xenophobia you might experience can vary. White foreigners often receive more favorable treatment compared to those with darker skin. For someone like me, who is from Gana (now living in Canada), you might encounter subtle forms of discrimination.

That's because of the old way of thinking there & people are afraid of being shunned by others or even disowned by their families. Thank You for your interviews Sayuri! ❤ please continue to do more.

The answers were "pleasing" but afterwards many black people on twitter and reddit refuted these statements due to their own experience in Japan. Many still claim that Osaka and Tokyo ( approximity included) are the only areas where black people have a chance. Anywhere else is too traditional to date. I dont know the truth I am just interested in the topic.

I'm a black man who has lived a good portion of his young life in Japan/Okinawa. I was also lucky enough to get a job out of college that sent me almost exclusively to Japan to work. So, I would say that I have almost 8-10 years of living/ working in Japan. I feel like I got to the point that I was forgetting/replacing my English words with the Japanese equivalent and dreaming in Japanese. I have also had the chance to travel to Korea and Europe for work from other jobs. As an American born in Oakland California, I would have to say that I loved living in Japan. I felt like I was more excepted there then in my own country. Don't get me wrong I would not trade the U.S for any other place to live and have a family. But if there were no kids involved, man.......I think that the bias I saw in Japan was of a foreigner. I can remember 2 times that I was maybe discriminated against. One time when I was in Aisu Wakamatsu trying to go into a bar and the people in there said, "No Gaijin". I was accepted after asking "Naze no Gaijin?" The other time was when I was walking around the Tokyo Dome and couple of kids run up to me pointing and screaming at me "Unko, unko, unko...", I turned around and chased them screaming "Nanni!" as they ran back to their parents. That is really small in comparison to the number of times I was discriminated here in the states. As for Europe I think most looked at me as an African immigrant or refugee and that had its own issues. I believe that America is better when it comes to family because in most other countries, your kids would be considered a half breed and not full "Japanese" in this case. That also goes for most other countries as well. Most countries make it really hard for mixed families to live or move up. It is a lot easier to do here in the U.S. Don't get me wrong. We do have our places here that do the same. But we do have laws against most of that. I think it's a little harder to prove in other countries. Well sorry for the rant. My dreams will always be of what it would have been like if I was in Japan. Maybe I'll go back and visit one day.........

The best response from us should be to individual level up.
We can only save ourselves and those that choose to listen.
Maybe try learning Japanese and speaking to them in Japanese.

From what I see with japanese people if you speak their language and understand certain cultural aspects like keeping distance, they will interact different with you and everything becomes easier. I‘m African but grew up in Germany so it wasn’t really a huge cultural switch when it came to certain societal norms and rules. Atleast not compared to some of my colleagues from other countries like America or even India for example😂 When it comes to women I can say this: there will obviously be differences in the behavior of women from other cultures but in the end, even tho a lot of the times western media try to paint a certain picture of them or guys who are obsessed with the IDEA of what asian women are, Japanese women are like women all over the world. We as humans have differences but in the end, we have more similarities in my opinion. Even if you’re black, you will have good or bad experiences depending on how you behave, where in Japan you’re at, what kind of women do you meet or even in what kind of time you grow up in. What I can say tho is that dating and marriage will obviously lead to different experiences. I never intended on marrying a japanese women because for marriage I simply want to stick to my own (I have african roots) but when it comes to dating I think it was quite easy. Especially when it came to one night stands it‘s easier in Japan compared to where in grew up (munich). Especially when it comes to certain women who only „wanted“ me in order to show me off to their friend group or just for the experience of having slept with a black guy. But as I‘m not into sleeping around and tying to get with a new woman every other night, this lifestyle simply wasn’t for me. I‘m single now and intend to stay that way until my studies are finished. But the people I met were nice. Just learn the language a bit and try to respect certain boundaries. The rest will come from alone.

Let's just keep it simple. Black people are complex, just like every other race. We're not just strong and fast, lol.
We have every different personality under the sun as well. Just as every other ethnicity does, we have sweethearts and asshole too lol. It goes well beyond physicality, which is impressive as well, but yes.
I think people should start getting outside of their 🫧 in the coming years. You don't have to date them. Still, we all need to foster a better understanding of one another, the world around.
A lot of the misconceptions can be damaging to people who don't deserve them. No matter if they're black people, of the Jewish community, Arabic, Caucasian etc. Our differences make us unique, but we're all just people. With red juice and squishy bits on the inside 😂

It’s NOT Hard to find if said people first acknowledged that these HAPPILY Married families Exist and have been way before the 1950’s matter of fact we go farther back then 200’s and 300 AD
We have a lot of none Japanese and none so called Black people commenting on these types post like we care or even asked for their opinion
the same could be said with the Yasuke situation with all those racist incels that felt the need to speak up for Japanese people when Japanese people themselves had no problem at all with a Historical Black figure like Yasuke A Black Man being represented as a Main Character in a game set up during the waring states of Japan 🇯🇵
Gate keeping and entitlement won’t help those type of people on this one and we have Receipts 🧾 to prove it, we are not seeking their acknowledgment and never cared for it, they can move around being cowards and racist about us amongst themselves like they been doing.
