"Unknown to Speed, Racer X is actually Speed's older brother Rex Racer who ran away from home years ago!" - the line the narrator repeats any time Racer X appears in an episode.
If you do not want to feel annoyed by the Dub Narrator's Commentary watch the Subbed Version. But unfortunately kissanime and 9Anime are the only places you can find the Sub Versions
It's weird, right? I hadn't thought of Speed Racer since the 90s, then I had a dream recently where he was in it. Naturally I go on TH-cam to look up the theme song, etc. and the algorithms dump me here. But "here" is no old video, it's less than a week old! Where's all this Speed coming from?
I'm 22 but this is actually the 2nd ever anime I watched (the first being Pokemon), It's actually really good, the dubbing is so bad that it's hilarious though.
Watch Mach gogogo. It's more mature dialogue. Only downside is it's really hard to find. Funimation accidentally trolled by putting out the blueray and saying it had both Japanese w/ English sub and the dub but that was a lie
I met Peter Fernandez around 1990 and in his voice dubbing panel he revealed that Tatsunoko only provided a translated script for the first episode. They would go from having the film cans arriving from Japan to dubbing an English vocal track in 48 hours! Keep in mind that the English episode would air in America before the Japanese version aired in Japan.
I constantly have an inner debate with myself if Speed Racer or Silverfang (Ginga Nagareboshi Gin) was my first anime that I ever watched. After a while of thinking, I am starting to believe Speed Racer was my first. I first encountered Speed Racer on Amazon Prime with the "Speed Racer Movie" (No not the 2008 one) But the one that had both The Race Against The Mammoth Car and the Car Hater episodes in it. I loved it even though I noticed some problems with the Anime as I was watching it the first time but I found it very charming and still do years later. I remember watching the Speed Racer: The Next Generation on Amazon Prime as well and loved it. While the animation didn't age well in that series I still find a lot of charm in it even though in my opinion it did a little too much towards the end of the series. My favorite episode of the Next Generation is Fast Track, it's very fun. I feel like the Speed Racer movie is over looked and I know I am biased because I used to watch that movie a lot as a kid and still love it. I think the 2008 Speed Racer movie knew what it was and went full throttle with it and it's a very fun and cheesy movie. I saw a bit of the 90s Reboot Speed Racer and The New Adventures of Speed Racer as well. I grew up with Speed and have very close nostalgic ties, so when I see those Speed Racer out of context videos and Speed Racer is a Sociopath videos I laugh. I laugh and say "yup, but I still love him," but that's the thing, I can describe the whole Speed Racer franchise with one word and that is charming. I love Speed Racer despite all of its flaws and it will always be a childhood classic to me.
I forgot that speed Racer was my first 60s anime and my first sports anime. And probably my only sports anime, because I don't much care for it. But I remember I love keeping up with the story of speed Racer! And even though I didn't totally love the movie, The visuals and the writing stage true to the original mood except for how they handled Racer x.
Lyceaos You mean the one at 5:08, or the one with the “Safety Seven” version of the Mach 5; the one with Aero Jacks, Emergency Wires, Balloon Tires, etc.?
Great video, thanks! I came here after watching a video clip on the IMdb page for Gigantor of Fredd Ladd discussing picking up Gigantor for the US, which I watched as a kid in the 1960s. I was so enamored of that show that I sought out expensive VHS copies of it in the 1990s! BTW, Speed Racer was syndicated in the US, I also watched it often as a kid growing up in NYC.
Speed Racer is still a classic anime series. I even went to a comic book convention and saw a custom sting ray corvette of the Mach 5. I was stunned. Although it didn't have the gadgets in the car, I was lucky to have a ride in the car itself. Years later, I saw another version of the Mach Five, but this time I wore my Speed Racer cosplay out fit and got my photo taken. The series celebrated it's 50th anniversary last year and Funnimation has released a head bust of Speed with the classic series, uncut japanese version and the never before release to the U.S. Mach Go Go Go in 1997.
American fans and journalists used that term to explain what it was, simply, back in the late '70s/early '80s, until the term "Anime" no longer had to be explained as "Animation from Japan."
I love Next Generation as much as I love the OG series and the movie. Hell Next Generation has Captain Terror as the main antagonist for most of it. Captain Terror, Zile Zazic, was the leader of the Car Acrobatics team.

For new viewers I recommend the original japanese since the American dub didn't have any translation of any kind and the writing was done based on what they saw in the episode. So with this, there is a lot of continuity errors such as villains returning but being called different names. Still I love the english dub since that was what a Grew up watching on boomerang and cartoon network.
