This is the process for repairing your F-150, F-250, F-350, Lincoln Navigator, Expedition or Excursion sunroof. Doing this yourself can save you well over $1,000.
Once the repair is complete, you may have to re-program the sunroof stop position. Just open the sunroof all the way, then press and hold the slide button back for over 10 seconds until the glass tries to move back. This sets the stop position.

Followed these instructions and rebuilt my sunroof in my 05 F250 in about 6 hours start to finish. Most places around here wouldn't touch it and the ones that would wanted at least $1500. I spent $110 on the Sunroof Doctor kit and about $3.99 on a Harbor Freight rivet gun. My plastic track assemblies shattered and broke. The sunroof works perfect now with no leaks. I can't thank you enough for the excellent video and instructions. If you're ever in South Carolina i owe you a beer!
I recently followed AutoRex's instructions to rebuild the sunroof on my '13 Expedition King ranch. The step by step instructions were very helpful. there were a couple of small details that were different. My headliner is much larger than an F150's. Therefore the headliner takedown was much more involved. However, the process was not very complicated. I did drop the entire headliner to prevent damage to it. It is rather delicate. Also I had to remove both the front and center row passenger side seats to facilitate removal of the sunroof for the repair. My Expedition sunroof (structure, not the glass) was secured only with bolts of one size. The tabs that AutoRex hammers down prior to removal of the broken parts from the tracks are not easily accessible from below to be able to hammer them back up. I had to drill access holes through the bottom of the sunroof structure to be able to hammer them back up to their proper position. These holes I covered with caulking to prevent leaks later. Lastly, the sunroof does need to be programmed to function properly. The programming is not very complicated and there are instructions available in You Tube to do this step. Just know that I had to hold the button much longer than the person doing the video did.
Over all this is an excellent instructional video. Thanks to AutoRex for giving me the inspiration to try this myself!!!

I wanted to let you know that I purchased the repair kit from Sunroof Doctor for a 2005 F-350 King Ranch as you suggested. I followed this video (and had to refer to it a couple of times) to make sure I installed the new parts as they were intended to be installed. Your instructions were perfect. I am amazed of the small amount of people that know how to do sunroofs. I’ve yet to meet anyone at dealerships that would even look at these. Over 30 yrs ago I worked at a place that did moonroofs and pop-ups, and vinyl tops onto dealers cars in the area. New cars straight off the trains to us, then to the dealers. We did mostly 85s to 95s back then. I was doing moonroofs and vinyl tops. Brings back memories. Later on, the dealerships started doing these things themselves at the dealers. Kinda faded out our jobs, but we then swapped to doing electronics, radios and video. Also did a lot of handicap stuff, lifts and such. Anyway, this is an excellent video, should be getting paid just for the video. Very impresssed. Good job. Got one more subscriber too.
By the way, I just bought a nice 2013 f150 fx4, 2 yrs ago, by the looks of all the comment, I’m almost afraid to use my moonroof !!

The only thing i would add is there is a closed height adjustment from the track at least on my 2003 Ford F-150 Supercrew. If your glass doesnt seem to want to close correctly with zero gap with the adjustment screws to the max amount. Take the adjustment screws out as well as the glass and loosen the motor and adjust the tail piece assembly tab to the middle of the groove on both sides. Once this is done tighten the motor back up and install the glass and use the adjustment screws to adjust the glass for proper closed alignment. I had to do this since the tail piece assembly moved to the back position of the grove allowed way to much downward gap that even the glass adjustment screws to the max height would not compensate for the height.
I just want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. I just finished with my 06 F150 and it went flawlessly. It took my friend an I about 3 hours and all for $84.00.
Great video very helpful. step by step. except the one part that is missing..... you need to re program your sunroof. it is very simple. follow these instructions if your roof won't tilt.
NOTE: The roof opening panel motor initialization procedure must be done when repairs are carried out on any part of the roof opening panel system, including: any time the roof opening panel motor has been removed from the roof opening panel assembly, a new roof opening panel motor has been installed or when a new roof opening panel assembly has been installed.Turn the ignition to the RUN position. For a new roof opening panel motor, skip to Step 3.NOTE: The roof opening panel glass will travel to the comfort STOP position first, which is approximately 50.8 mm (2 in) from the full open position. Press the open switch again to fully open the roof opening panel.For an existing roof opening panel motor, open the roof opening panel glass to the full OPEN position, then release the switch.For a new roof opening panel motor, press and hold the open switch until the roof opening panel glass moves to the full OPEN position, then continue to hold the open switch until the roof opening panel glass moves slightly rearward and then slightly forward to the stored OPEN position, then quickly release the switch.For an existing motor, press and hold the open switch (for approximately 10 seconds) until the roof opening panel glass moves past full OPEN, then to full OPEN near the rear of the roof opening panel assembly, then quickly release the switch.NOTE: After pressing and holding the open switch in this step, it will take approximately 3 seconds for the roof opening panel to begin close/tilt/close (initialization) movements.NOTE: If the switch is released before close/tilt/close (initialization) movements are complete, go back to Step 3.Press and hold the open switch until after the roof opening panel carries out close/tilt-up/close (initialization) movements.Release the open switch and test the system for normal operation by carrying out one-touch open to comfort stop, full open, close from full open to comfort stop, close from comfort stop to full close and tilt operation.

I know this video was made a long time ago, but this just helped me repair my 2012 sunroof. Very helpful and everything went GREAT. One problem, I was unable to get the dang headliner out of the truck no matter what I did, without creasing the darn thing. So I just left it inside while I repaired the sunroof.

I have a 2012 F350. I followed this to a T minus I tried to cheat and leave my passenger side seat in. Epic failure. Save yourself the F bombs and pull the seat. Took 10 minutes. Only thing video is missing is reset procedure which I googled. Great video!

I bought the kit and did the repair today, worked fine. Since Ford has decided against ever improving the sunroof, I will never buy another Ford truck, for using cheap hardware and no driver side assist handle, for having a turning radius like the Queen Mary, etc.,etc., etc. I don't plan on ever using the moonroof again because I don't want to have to do this a 2nd time. Sadly, The parts in the replacement kit don't look any more robust than the cheap parts in the factory sunroof.

This seems to be more of issue with age of this part not use. I just bought a 2011 Navigator from my father-in-law (who has terrible hearing). He hadn't noticed the wind noise coming from the sunroof not properly sealing and since it doesn't leak there was nothing to notify him that there was a problem. When I told him right after buying it from him that it wouldn't properly seal he was surprised. He said had only used it maybe 10 times in the last 7 years.

Just did my 2011 F250 last night. Not a horrible job to do but definitely helps to have a few extra hands removing the frame.
Should my new hardware fit rather snug? It seems pretty tight compared to the factory hardware I replaced.

Use a smaller bit and drill the center out of the rivets.
Very helpful video, just repaired my 01 lariat supercrews sunroof. However, my tracks do not have the locking tabs that you beat down and bent back up. Are the older model sunroofs different? I don't understand what stops the roof from moving backwards on mine since there are no tabs or signs of tabs? I haven't tried it out yet because I'm afraid that the followers will break again since the drain tray hits first.

There’s no way to just replace the plastic piece with out having to bring the whole headliner down ?
At 21:45 my 2006 f150 harley edition has a piece of sheet metal across the back making it to where you cant pop those tabs back out..... I ended up using a sharp paddle bit top from the other side and prying it up
I took the sunroof off and it appears like the locking tab in the shaft snapped off. I put the kit in but what is the best way to go about replacing the locking tab?

Great video, unfortunately for me after I got mine done. My sunroof would not retract back into the channel to open completely. Events it lifts up and closes down but we’re not slide back. Not for sure what I did wrong, does anybody have any ideas?

Perfect video, I have the replacement kit on its way. I do have a question as my sunroof was stuck in the open position and I had to pull the motor in order to slide it forward so I could remove the glass. My question is, do I need to do anything special since it didnt start in the closed position or will the calibration automatically take car of it?

RE: Rail replacement.
Fantastic video. I replaced the rails due to broken plastic. Reinitialized sys. Closed fine. Open To vent position and when closing, it stopped moving and began to chatter. Used a hex key to manually close from vent position but only passenger side closed.
How can I close drivers side? If I remove motor do cables rotate or do they slide.
Any info is appreciated.

I bought the rebuilt kit and followed your instructions but have a couple issues. When I hold the button to open the sunroof, it will open about 2 inches and stop. If I press the button again, it will fully open. When I close it, it does the same thing. Closes until about 2 inches and stops. I press the button again and it closes fully. It also will not vent/tilt. Have you run into this before?
Does it make much difference if I took apart the other end of the sunroof frame instead? I had to drill a few more rivets out, but I did it before I seen your video
Great video. I replaced a sunroof on my 2002 f150 and it seemed okay. But it will only open halfway and stops does everything else okay. It's a one button moonroof. Is there a reset I can understand with this year and model? All other videos show the 3 button switches. Sny help is greatly appreciated
Great video. Anyone have suggestions how to adjust/align the glass so it seals correctly? Mine is flush with the top but still leaks a little. I’ve ordered a new seal/weatherstripping so that might be it as well.

My sunroof on my 2018 F250 king ranch hasn't been used in over a year and when I tried to open it one side lifted up on the rear left corner. The cable trees to move on the passenger side but the driver side track is definitely broken and the cable (pin) doesn't appear to move on that side. Do you think the cable is ok, do they ever break or would replacing both tracks most likely fix the issue? I'm hoping to not have remove the whole headliner and frame.
mine still just lifts up and closes back down after repair. Same with tilt or open button. Any solutions? Thanks
Did everything you did in the video. When I went to try it out the window won’t open. The tilt button will cycle through the tilt positions. If I pull the slide button it will tilt the window up and then back down. Any solutions to this?

What is that paste called? The one you pick at before you rivet the frame back on? I think the one on my sunroof is so dry that that's where water is coming from by the rivets
Good video! I ordered the rebuild kit from The Sunroof Doctor. All went well with the reinstall except the back left corner is cracked. Would you know where to find one of those without buying a whole new assembly from the Ford Dealer?

I am considering filing a class action lawsuit with Ford/Lincoln regarding the cheap faulty plastic mechanism for their sunroof tracks. I just bought a 2015 Lincoln Navigator and two days after my sale we go to use the sunroof and nothing but cracking breaking plastic one piece fell out. I see they use the same sunroof mechanism for the Ford expedition, F150, F250 ,F350 and Lincoln Navigator. If you have had to repair your sunroof or payed the dealer or shop to do it for you? Are hesitating repairing it because of the expense? Please respond to my post if I can get 12 or more people before a judge I can start a class action lawsuit to have Ford reimburse your money or have a recall on the sunroof mechanism and have ford do and pay for the repair. Please let me know if you struggled with the same sunroof problems. Thank you.

Video was great. I have a question my cable that feeds to the motor has a cloth wrapped around it when I took mine out there's parts of the material and unwinding or missing on the cable? I am abkut ut to tackle this myself on my 2006 f150. I have already bought the kit. I am a very experienced mechanic but I have never done this before. My father is going to come help. I figured two people would make it go a little faster. We have watcher the video all the way through twice now. Any advice before we start?

Sunroof leaks after I performed the sunroof repair. Any ideas what this could be? All drain tubes are clear.
