WEBINAR: Thermal Storage and Management using PCM (Phase Change Material)

  • Phase Change Materials (PCMs) provide significant thermal energy storage by taking advantage of the latent heat required for the solid-to-liquid and liquid-to-gas phase transition. This approach can help overcome shortfalls of traditional cooling solutions such as forced convection and pumped single-phase which add size, weight and power (SWaP) to the system. When sized correctly for power and mission duration, PCM solutions can be used as lightweight reliable backups or standalone heat sinks. This presentation will provide engineers with an understanding of the challenges and resolutions associated with PCM heat sink design and the tools to implement these solutions into their systems.

    what would be the suitable PCM for integration into thermal storage systems (Hot Water Tanks) ?

    • @AdvancedCoolingTech
      @AdvancedCoolingTech  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an interesting approach. It might make sense to integrate PCM, however, in water tank thermal storage systems, the water is used in a similar fashion as the PCM would be used, in most PCM thermal storage applications. Please reach out to solutions@1-ACT.com and provide more details on the thermal storage requirements, heat source, tank size and ambient conditions and we'd be happy to review and see if the application could benefit from a PCM solution.

    Can you suggest me the best PCM for extreme cold(-50 C to 0 C)?

    • @AdvancedCoolingTech
      @AdvancedCoolingTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello- There are a lot of PCMs that go that low -50C to 0C). Some are organic hydrocarbons, but most are salt hydrates. I would always suggest an organic hydrocarbon over a salt hydrate because they are not corrosive like salt solutions. As for a particular PCM, it depends on the application. If you'd like to discuss your application, please email us at solutions@1-act.com.

    HELLO FRIEND , i have a doubt.. yes PCM absorb heat when it reach a particular temperature in sink,,, so the battery temperature is maintained,,, but this absorbed heat get rejected immediately when the surrounding temperature is less than melting point,,, the surrounding composed of sink itself,, so that again heat up the battery ,, right ?

    • @AdvancedCoolingTech
      @AdvancedCoolingTech  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The melt and freeze temperature for most PCM is identical (or very close), so the PCM will provide cooling when the device is generating heat. Once the heat is removed, it will take time for the PCM to resolidify, which will keep the device near the melt temperature. We hope this helps! @@AdvancedCoolingTech hey, it's not about only maintaining right!..what happened the battery temperature or sink temperature below the melting point, the pcm get solidify by exothermic reaction and it heatup the sink or battery again right

    Hello i just wanna ask, how do you calculate the void or space that needed for the expansion of PCM? rather how do you know how much volume of pcm will be put into the heat sink?

    • @AdvancedCoolingTech
      @AdvancedCoolingTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is pretty complex, and part of the engineering design studies we complete for customers. A short answer would be "During manufacturing, a heat sink module will be completely leak tight which makes it a pressure vessel. Since the PCM volume increases when the PCM melts, a void volume, typically 8 to 15 percent of the total volume, is required to prevent the PCM from bursting."
