Awesome show, I think I liked the show where you showed how to quarter saw, it's the only time I've ever seen that done, at the Mill I worked on slabs went slowly, sawdust never piled up much as it was nearly all pine, the fastest moving by product was chips from the planer

Looks like a pretty efficient setup Andruw and dad. Firewood pile up around our sawmill all summer. But when it gets cold it disappears fast.

Our edgings we treated our edgings differently frim our slabs. Wood chips were useful and sought after. Often we would mills slabs into two-inch edgings so we could chip them.

From our first snowfall in November until the New Hampshire snow was all gone, we had a slab pit that was always putting up smoke.
Mostly, we just cut white pine and hemlock.
Hardwood slabs we used as firewood.
We also always even in summer, had a burn barrel going.

Been a long time since I've seen one of those used when I was a boy me and my dad cut timber we cut a 80 year old man's timber and he had a cut off saw mounted on a H Farmall and he pull up to a tree lap and cut it completely up to pencil size sticks I liked watching him 5 hrs he have a big wagon load

When I was young people would line up on Saturday mornings and I helped my dad and papaw cut slabs like that most of the day. We just threw it in the back of their trucks so it made it easier. Good video.

That's a pretty good setup for making firewood bundles from your slab wood. If you have any camp grounds near you, the softwood slabs you have could be used for firewood bundles too. The one thing I am wondering about, is what do you do with the mountain of sawdust the sawmill generates?

I like the saying "Pine is just fine". I have a ton of pine and hardwood on the property and I plan to use both in my outdoor wood boiler. An excellent way to heat the home.

Yea pine slabs are fine for personal use. Just hate to sell them they don’t burn as long.

@@AndruwsLumber True! 1/2 the BTU's for the same size. It's just that I have so much. I mean I could burn 10 cords a year in the boiler and still have enough for the next 10 years without hitting the hardwood. I'll probably use pine during the day and then hardwood for the night.

@@TheRussellStover I heat my house and shop with whatever slabs comes off my BSM, including pine. Seasoned pine works great in the woodstove, but like you said, you just burn more of it. SR

I have two of those buck saws. I've tried to use them for slab wood but the whole process of using them is too slow, so I found an easier, faster way. I have pallet forks on my tractor with a "thumb" centered between the forks, I drive under the slabs, activate the thumb down to hold the load of slabs tight on the forks. I then drive to where I want the cutoffs to fall (over a trailer) and use my chainsaw to make cuts down through the whole load. If I'm careful I can get the lengths I want and if needed I can use the 20" length of the chainsaw bar to measure that. It goes pretty fast with NO bending or lifting on my ageing back! lol SR
