I decided to major in computer science thank to that bridge Charlie is mentioning! I began with art and design, I thought this is what I'd work in, but design led me to meet software and question how it is made, etc. They both involve similar skills and are so fun to work in! Design + Software Engineering = My Heart! 🙌❤😍😊
lol I was also in Computer Science until my 3rd year where I landed in the land of UNIX classes which wasn't my cup of tea. Until I ended up taking a GUI/HCI class and absolutely loved it. And apparently, our university offered a more front-end UI/UX oriented program called Interactive Systems Design. Jumped the boat never looked back. And great last name BTW! :D
yayy women in tech! just recently, there's been a huge shift in the design role itself and people who land into design actually don't even come from a design background. I see a lot of designers' background in HCI, PSY, and even engineering. It was a little shocking to me since I always did visual art and design since I was a kid all the way into college. The responsibilities have definitely changed and grown as well as designer's role and relationship within a company. They are quickly becoming an essential part of the process.
This is an awesome conversation ladies! What do designers in tech do is something I am actively trying to unpack as well. I especially like the breakdown between marketing and product design since there's digital work involved in marketing as well.
I'm straight out of a CS bachelor and working my first job as a frontend dev with no experience or education in ux design. This couldn't be more relevant! Sometimes I just want to google "how to design okayish layouts". My technique right now is to just find things that do a job similar to what I need, and try to discern why it works well and how to apply it to my ui. Original workflow do not steal.
Love love love this collab between you two. I found you and Charli separately and it's so cool to see that y'all made videos together. It's really awesome to see more and more tech TH-camrs, but especially seeing the two of you take lead in the TH-camr representation of women in technology.
I’ve been watching Charli’s videos for a while now. I was introduced to your channel through the interview she did with you, and I love both channels! I’m so inspired by ladies in tech. I’m a teacher seeking a career change, and want to delve into tech. Not sure which route to take, and its hard to change at 42 lol Thanks for sharing your life and career with us.
It’s like a car , you have an engine and the outside is the design of the car. Same with computers it’s code ascii , binary and the upper level is like icons great talk.
yeah.. Mechanical Engineers only make engines that can make movement of cars on the other hand Industrial Designers are the people who designs the look, shape, color etc of the car!
As a developer do you have much say in the design process or are you just given a design and told to create it?, as someone who loves being creative & loves creating things will I be able to be creative if I pursue a Development career? I originally studied Product design and loved creating & coming up with ideas but due to lack of job availability I decided to study in a new interest (web dev) by being also interested by the design point of coding/ Programming.
you just given a design and told to create it yeah! First of all designers research about customer care and demand then design an app or a website... then it is given to developers, they code and program that app or a website.
My degree is a bachelors of design: computing. I'm hoping this will give me specialization but at the same time breadth in both technology and design! I in particular am looking forwards to working in UX
Im studying mechanical engineering and then minoring in industrial arts. I feel overwhelmed is disinterested with the heavy math, but I appreciate design. What are your thoughts to really focus on to become say like a product design engineer?
Hey Mayuko, Charli Wanted to ask how much knowledge regarding designing should a front end dev have? I mean i have seen job descriptions for front end devs to have knowledge of good UI UX practices and some even mentioned photoshop as well.
Hey mayuko, so i want to express my anxiety. I am a beginner coder and i have learned python and i can say i got a good hang of it, i could write code, do lots of beginner project, etc. but so because i want to learn further i tried to search more, i tried to solve a lot of problems. But sometimes my logic didn’t work, and when i got the answer all i can think is “why i haven’t thought about this solution” so it’s like i can’t solve the problem but if i was given the solution it was not hard for me to understand the solution. Is it like natural talent for someone to be good at solving problem?
really you are not the only one. you can check codewars and other sites similar to it. learn algorthim and data structure. they help you to think logically. if you are fed up with learning you can check computer vision and data science. these topics are fun but a lil bit hard to learn
I get what you feel since that's what I've been experiencing too. If only my parents just allowed me to take Game Development(will focus on art), Animation or Multimedia Arts instead. I don't really have a natural talent in drawing but I'm more enthusiastic about it and that's where my passion is over Software Engineering/Computer Science.
You can't be a UX Designer after CS degree lol, you will face problems... If you want to be a UX Designer you should go with Graphic/Communication or Media design degree..
UX design is about research and customer care, design thinking and how it (web/app) works, what will be the main function or work of this app etc. On the other hand, UI design is about the look, color, fonts etc.. UI Designers designs the look of the app/web that how it will look, they design pages, buttons etc. Product Design contains both, as a Product Designer you are supposed to do both or you are doing one thing UX or UI but you have knowledge of other one also, so you are a Product Designer..
8:40 - Actually, I have to disagree here. Schools that I've run into (especially the one I go to) started adopting that philosophy and left the *actual* implementation entirely unexplained. If I'm going to learn computer science, I should probably learn the actual hard-skills to go along with the theory in school.
Can anybody tell me the difference between mayuko channel and BRAD TRAVERSY MEDIA channel , she just talk , talk alot but brad shows to people how to code with awesome coding project and concept Very less no. Of people put some effort in programming community to help other people, instead of fucking acting on programming channel and self promotion all the time
two of my favorite people
Jarvis Johnson my favorite too
Jarvis Johnson three of my favorite people

This is a helpful video to understand what's goin on for front-end designers. Thanks Mayuko!
Love your hair color Charli! ✨
Mayuko, would love to watch a video about how you got into TH-cam 😍

I love this collab video! Collaboration between a Product Designer and a Software Engineer is always a worth to watch
This is very random, but this was uploaded on my B-Day and I'm a designer! Props to coincidence 🙌
A very helpful video!

I would like to see you collaborate with CS Dojo
What exactly is the difference between UI and UX? Is there one?
