Reef were the band during the class days of the mid 90's that yer (see what I done there? 🤦🏻♂️) pal who had curtains for a non fringe wanted you to be into. And you got into them. Despite his fringe.
I have just played their album 'Glow' and I chuckled to myself as it brought back memories. Back in the late 1990s the DJ used to play this at the 'Meltdown' venue at the Waterfront in Norwich (owned by the University of East Anglia). My mates used to point at me during the chorus for simply being...the oldest in the group. The next oldest was only 4 weeks younger! Anyhow...listening to the first few lines 21 years on is now quite apt: 'Hide away boys you're no longer in favour, you're yesterday's news and no longer the flavour. :-/ I'm 41 now.
My friends and I used to drive up to Meltdown from Warwickshire. Sleep in the car (3 of us in a metro) and then head home the next day. First time I ever had red bull and vodka was there. Good times
Back in the day Reef toured Australia and got a slot on a Saturday evening variety show called Hey Hey it’s Saturday. They practiced a song during the day and took in the sights and sound of the TV studio and host Darrel Summers. DS had a bit of a day and apparently payed out on a few of the younger guests who were appearing alongside Reef. The band took exception to this rough treatment and without telling Summers or the show management they switched songs. Yer old is how Reef saw Darrel Summers … who was it has to be said somewhat pissed off and ungracious in his reaction to this very dynamic comment. It was one of the most animated and energised performances by a rock band that I’ve ever seen on live to air TV, Reef stuck it to DS big time. Good on yah.
Doing a drunken nostalgia drive. Used to do this in a covers band in my 20's. Nearly 50 now. Blimey. Where did those seasons go? Obviously I was never as good as Gary Cherone. But then, he never gave Reef as good a performance as he did on "Cupid's Dead" for The Blue Oyster Cunt Band. (Irony alert. I know full well that Gary Cherone was actually the singer for AC/DC from 1975 to 1802, Ok?)
I LOVE Reef! Because they deliver a pure punchy rock performance with a drummer, a guitarist, a bass guitarist and a singer that blasts it out of the park! It's minimalist and hard, which allows the brilliance of what they're doing to have impact! I'm old enough to remember the 70s. 'Pop' songs had to have everything from an orchestra to a fucking CHOIR! The more 'instrumental crap' you include in a song only serves to water down its impact and get it closer to white noise (Queen's 'We will rock you' isn't an anthem for nothing! Think about what it consists of instrumentally... fuck all right?) Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' can go fuck itself... IMHO lol.
This song now applies to anyone who remembers when it came out
😂 hahah! So true!
