In this video Coach Carl breaks down the progression for the Strict Handstand Push Up without using a kip. The progression for this is similar to the kipping version, but instead of using your hips as an assistance to initiate the movement Carl uses gravity by falling at a small angle from the headstand. Being able to use gravity and controlling the fall, then balancing and recovering to a fully inverted position during the press-out is the skill portion of this strength-dominant movement.

I'm a bigger guy and have really struggled with HSPUs (kipping), getting 4-6 max then burning out. This video gave me the essential cue of floating away from the wall a bit (for the kip that means kicking slightly away from the wall) and then arching back towards the wall. I immediately went from my 4-6 max to multiple sets of 6-10. Huge improvement for me and proves your statement (loosely paraphrased) that skill unlocks strength. Thanks for the great coaching and keep the videos coming!
amazing, Kyle. Great work
One of the best handstand tutorials I've ever watched. Good advice to bridge the gap between wall-free balancing.
Great Vid. love the Progressions! Made it simple!
Awesome progression!
man, you are good. Why aren't you more popular?
awesome tutorial Carl, your channel have helped me a lot since ive started Crossfitting :)
Very Good Coach, Thanks.
I am so inspired by your videos! Thank you!
Thank you, Tara.
Carl Paoli i Ibyyy
thank you!
Thanks a lot! Will do it today! From Hong Kong
great vid
nice, you make it look so easy! walking handstand next?
If anyone's interested in seeing a worse rendition of the final progression, I made a training video on my channel!
Thanks for the idea Carl, i'll have it soon!
Hola Deberias sacar mas videos en espanol y los tutoriales de tu web me an servido de mucha ayuda . Gracias
very good tutorial, thanks.
i'm following it with hands on pushup supports because training exercise with my hands on the floor caused me wrist pains.
any suggestion about avoiding wrist pain?
thanks again.
ciao
Damn you are so good
you are kind
This video has helped me so much. I finally have enough strength to push up in the handstand. But now when I push up I lose complete balance and fall down 😅
now this is good advise
Sweet!
this video can help with hollow back too, thanks
good vid, i like that last progression..thanks Marty McFly
ive been training this movement for hollow backs for years ive recntly had injury limitations in my range have accured now i have troubl pushing head through any idea as why this might be happening? anyone?
Shall the falling come from the lower body = legs or Shoulders = upper body
I have real problems with falling onto my toes that you use in both this and the assisted HSPU training. If I fall onto my feet with the sort of force you show in this video, I'm in pain for a few days. I think it doesn't help having a long big toe. Ever come across this when training others?
You're awesome Carl but what if i can't even do the body-distance apart progression? I can't press through, i am stuck at the ground. How can i significantly increase my shoulder strength?
Thank you. I would suggest you start getting patient and developing some overhead pressing strength. Do some progressive loading over eight weeks and do some tempo work. Like a 2121 with Dumbbells. Barbells. Then, check my blocking movement video on push-ups and add those for assistance.
@@iamcarlpaoli Will most definitely do! Thanks Carl! I'll let you know if I make any progress.
Cheers :-D
he's shown that already
if someone seriously trying to handstand push-ups then he will find it bit hard, the guy in video has much practice so he can do it easily, its not a right way fr beginners..
i tie socks tight around my wrists
