From about 8:10 to 9:30 is a part of this special that will stick with me forever. Seeing jon find the lyrics to "there's bones in my closet but you hang stuff anyway" authentically and in the moment is exactly what I look to for these making of videos.

I've never listened to this song so I'm basically just hearing the arrangement building up from nothing.
I'd never heard of him or the song before, but when I got to 13:38 I knew I had to have it. So of course I went to find it.. only to find out the finished product is a radio-friendly pop/hiphop.. thing. All of the emotion of the lyrics have been completely negated. Honestly, I'll just put 13:38 on repeat.
Also; the actual song is SO MUCH BETTER than before!

Most of the artists today sample older music pieces, so the video would probably only have a Maximum of 5 minutes. Also, some other artist do have beat producers. But your comment is true to some extend, there are many artists where I would love to watch the behind the scenes.
Most big artists don't write their own music. Even those who write the lyrics typically don't produce the actual music/beats.
That's what's so frustrating with trap hip hop and mumble rap because the lyrics are almost always so meaningless and uninspired. The beats are what is actually interesting, but you don't hear about the producers cause the artists are who gets the recognition and fame.

Melody almost always comes first. Fit words to the rhythmic patterns. Plenty of ways to write a song, but this is the most common. That being said, Jon makes it look effortless. That's how it is when you write hundreds of songs. He's got it down to a science.

this in my opinion is a musical genius. he just had an idea of the song and what he wanted it to sound like and while he was getting the instumentals down he was creating lyrics. some artist can't do that. he also allows each instrument to shine.

I HATE it Lol It's such a great song and the "YEEE" has become iconic in the live shows but it just hurts my sensitive sensibilities, love everything from Jon so not a hater. The other thing I hate in New York Soul is the crackling which I'm guessing is supposed to be like vinyl crackle but it just sounds like digital clipping to my ears, especially when I listen on reference speakers.

It's so refreshing to see the process of music. It's also so refreshing to see the artist himself producing and writing and just concocting his own content and music. It's hard to imagine a mainstream artist doing this with how set up everything is for that said artist. There are a ton of artist today who just come in to sing whatever produced music there already is for it to become their next hit single. Not saying all, but most. This is an example of someone who is truly so passionate and genuine about what they're doing and they release what feels good and sounds good to them. It makes for a great end result. So glad I came across this.
