If you wanna know a secret. Basically the 250r is race ready from factory. You can adj carb jetting if you install a pipe & silencer. Mine was bone stock except handle bars grips and sprocket and chain. I would whip banshees that were modded like no tomorrow.
I live in NM and used to do 2 strokes ran 32-1 and sometimes 28-1 in summer put one size jet larger than stock and would drip oil out tailpipe and never foul a plug and ran like a champ and only had to do a top end once and was due to a blown head gasket and ran out of coolant. what kills 2 strokes is running lean and or lack of lube. Just remember thats what lubes rings and rod and crank. And by the way good video. I love my 3 wheelers. all 3 of mine now are 4 strokes.

The 350X was a great sport ATC. It wasn't race oriented like the 250R. I owned both bk in late 80s. Miss those machines! Quads are better tho. I'm a diehard quad guy since early 90s. Suzuki then Yamahas! Maxima or Bel-Ray premix oils cannot be beat IMO. Tho many are good!

It's a lot to do with parents putting their 12 yr old thats never road one on one of these. Little tommy gets hurt and all of a sudden it's the 3 wheelers fault.

1986 Honda ATC 250R.... STILL the sexiest most beautiful vehicle ever produced. The 350X ain't bad either. Grew up riding these legends, and miss them dearly....these video's always put a huge smile on my face and provide magical nostalgia.
I've owned many atc 250r. Even my bone stock 84 would smoke my friends 350x. The water cooled 85-86 250r, in completely stock form, would crush even a modded boat anchor 350x all day everyday
350x won't beat a 250r..even the older air cooled ones off the line or anywhere. the 350x will catch it and outrun it eventually.. They are 5 mph faster or so on top speed..they can touch 80-85 mph if you give them enough room. The 250r stock won't go 80. Almost but not quite. They will waste the 350x until it maxes out
I have a 350x and had a couple r's. If you want a perfect machine add a few teeth to rear sprocket on x. You will take most anything off the line but top out around 55-65mph. Not fast top end but man you can idle and crawl through the woods like you won't believe. Perfect trail setup and really improves torque/power band feel. Also makes clutch last longer. R's are fun but I sold mine, just not real practical for normal riding. The 350x is the best all around atc ever made in my opinion. Hold on to yours.
That's a good matchup the 350 4-stroke versus 250 2-stroke. And of course the two stroker won! I miss my cr500r but the neighborhood and the cops don't miss it at all. 😂

'84 tecate 5 speed was faster than the 250r at 55 to 60, 65 with over inflated 22x11 rears. Hell, the banshee could barely keep up till it hit 6th gear. Someone is telling tall tales or their speedo was highly optimistic.
that's not a race. looks like two guy that are afraid of their machines. hold the throttle wide open and use snap the clutch and don't let off when you shift gears. nothing feels better than kicking a 250r in the ass and holding on for the ride!!!
Still upset of building my 86 350x from ground up literally was showroom had 11k invested over a 3 year build rode it 4 times got behind on rent in 2018 sold it for 1400$ sttttuuupid I know! But I had to pay rent had it up for a week at 5k then 4k then 3 k then 3 days before rent was due best offer I could get was 1400 absolutely killed me to sacrifice it guybwas a doosh that bought it too he knew I was in money trouble fucking price sold it for 8k a month later
Back in the day I had a 87 Fourtrax 250r and my brother had a 350x (can't remember the year but he bought it new).A good friend also had a 350x. Many times we would line up and run them. Out of the hole the 350x if launched just right would hang with the 250r for a very short time.....until I got into that fat midrange and then it was see you later.
My old whooped air cooled 250r could spank the pants off my brothers old cherry 350x. especially on the dunes. 350x's are cool but not like the modern high compression, big bore, short stroke, 4 stroke machines. They were tanks compared to the 250r. My newer air cooled 250r still spanks a lot of modern 4 strokes. But now I'm putting together a 480R I'll put that up against any 4 stroke any day. I'm doing a vlog build on my channel. check it out if you're a man that likes 3 wheels and horse power!
85 and 86. The air cooled 250r was about 20lbs lighter and the had similar suspensions and geometry from what I heard to the 350x or maybe it was the 200x. I never wanted to ride a air cooled 250r that rode like a brick but then again I never rode one I only had a 1986 and 1985. I did have a 350x and enjoyed it but it wasnt a 86 250r. How’s the early bombs ride? Are they cruel to the lower back or not so bad? When I seen them on video it looks tougher than the 350x’s I seen.
I have a 350x and my cousin has a 250r air cooled and he knows how to ride rlly good and we raced he took off and I pop a big ass wheelie and that point I thought the race was over but I went anyway and still dust him like nothing I turn around all I see is dust so idk
Safety first. No helmet nice. The 250R is running rich. Likely using cheap outboard two stroke oil. Get a helmet and get some synthetic two stroke oil.
I had a 250R (83 air cooled model) and was always disappointed how it ran at part throttle. I came to the conclusion that the needle has worn out the jet. I hammered the jet down and redrilled it to what I thought was proper size. That thing ran fantastic at part throttle. Problem was that it only lasted 2 miles before the piston seized in the cylinder. Got another pistor and cylinder and went back to stock with jet size etc. I came to the conclusion that the 2 stroke was tuned like a cammed up engine. Only worked at full throttle when the pipe got warm enough to get the scavenging effect. I would much have preferred the 350.
Those babies needed to be hitting the powerband. But when they were revved up they’re scary fast. I had a 200x and my neighbor had a 250r. In a race he’d kill me but in the woods or hill climbs my 4 stroke had more guts.
If you had a correctly running 250 you would have loved it. I had a 350x and it was cool. One of the fastest trikes made. Dude ended up blowing it up bc it was leaking oil and then put a cbr 600 on it

I saw a video of an old man kick starting a honda 350x, and once he sit down on it... Neither one of em can race. I've beat 250r,s more than once on my 85 350x. The only thing that tore my ass up was a banshee. A 660 raptor eventually had me on top end but I was able to Hang with it thru 5th gear. Never have had the chance to run with a 500 quadzilla. But I'm sure I'd get spanked bad.
For everyone wandering why I said "its smoking pretty bad" that's not cause i thought it shouldn't smoke, just that I didn't think its suppose to smoke that much. This was my first time riding a 250r period. I got this ATC in pieces and put it all back together and this was its madden voyage. It does not smoke like this anymore. The pipe was painted and never burned in so that's what caused the excessive smoke it was also mixed 20:1 like it recommends (especially on its first run in years).
Cory Rouse you need to change to 32:1 that 20:1 was recommended in the 80s when we had bullshit oils now we have excellent oils my trx250r loves 32:1 and performs best with it my tank says 20:1 also don't go by that back then we had shitty oils not like today's oils that's why today's cars go 5x more miles then they did back then

I bought one brand new, saw it taken out of the box back in 1986. It was awesome. The 250 will smoke a 350. Not even a race.

The Eric Benson they were about 30lbs or so heavier. The 350x I mean. And frames weren’t as strong 💪.

@@crawdad62 We had a 200x too. Very reliable. The little 90 was surprisingly fun and fast. Hard to keep the chain in good shape on that one.

I saw a video of an old man kick starting a honda 350x, and once he sit down on it... The 350x disappeared 😂😅😂 🤣 Even the suzuki quadzilla 500 looked small and frail underneath of pretty much any rider.. especially if they were around 6ft. 200lbs.

Both drivers were not good. The 250R should always smoke the 350x on the flat. Climbing a steep hill the 350x should win.

Burning oil
Yahh lean to much gas and oil gas burns up oil doesn't goes down burns up on hot engine and pipe get sucked in come out tail pipe and make a ton of smoke
I would lean the fuel mixture a bit, high end would be insane.

Neither one of em can race. I've beat 250r,s more than once on my 85 350x. The only thing that tore my ass up was a banshee.
A 660 raptor eventually had me on top end but I was able to Hang with it thru 5th gear.
Never have had the chance to run with a 500 quadzilla. But I'm sure I'd get spanked bad.

For everyone wandering why I said "its smoking pretty bad" that's not cause i thought it shouldn't smoke, just that I didn't think its suppose to smoke that much. This was my first time riding a 250r period. I got this ATC in pieces and put it all back together and this was its madden voyage. It does not smoke like this anymore. The pipe was painted and never burned in so that's what caused the excessive smoke it was also mixed 20:1 like it recommends (especially on its first run in years).

Sometimes the old packing in the silencer is soaked with old oil and smokes when the pipe heats up
Cory Rouse you need to change to 32:1 that 20:1 was recommended in the 80s when we had bullshit oils now we have excellent oils my trx250r loves 32:1 and performs best with it my tank says 20:1 also don't go by that back then we had shitty oils not like today's oils that's why today's cars go 5x more miles then they did back then
You were wise to go with lots of oil to give the engine the most lubrication, you can always go a bit less oil if you are careful
