M liked the Belvedere Torso (known as early as the 1430's) and the Laocoon (unearthed in 1506 in Rome) and some ancient Hellenistic cameos. He did do some restoration work on the Farnese Bull sculpture group (unearthed in 1546 in Rome) which is now in Naples. And that ain't no bull.
Yes, Cantor is probably conflating the Barberini Faun with the Belvedere Torso. Michelangelo was definitely familiar with the latter but obviously not with the former.
