Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer... www.bbc.co.uk/a... Prince Hal (Tom Hiddleston) has been summoned to the Court at Westminster by his Father, Henry IV (Jeremy Irons). The King will not tolerate Hal's recent exploits in the company of Falstaff (Simon Russell Beale) & Poins (David Dawson). Rebellion threatens the security of the Monarchy and Henry IV cannot afford to let the heir to the throne continue with such disreputable behaviour.

Okay, for folks wanting a translation:
The King is basically saying Harry has ruined his reputation with the people who matter (Other Nobles) because he's known to go partying around and being this irresponsible playboy buffoon who gets drunk with the common filth and has never shown any Kingly qualities. His father is saying that when he was Harry's age, he didn't go out much at all which let people know he was always hard at work on something which gave him respect and a sort of mystique about him. And when he DID go out he was always super humble and he never dressed himself up so people saw him as not some proud man who thought himself better than others.
He's pissed Harry has not only disgraced himself but also damaged the reputation of the Royal Family as a whole.
Harry gives him this half-hearted "Fine, I'll do better. Whatever." response and the King gives him a good smack for his fratboy attitude.
Ooh is that the father
@@elkehendrickx3568 Yes, Jeremy Irons' character.
Thank you! I was struggling!
I think the Hal’s response is loaded. In light of his first soliloquy, the prince is putting on a show; he lever lost himself to being with. While he imitates the sun, which shines down upon everyone, the king is like a comet, something wondrous but short lived. I would rather have the sun as king because it is everlasting. It’s also historically always been a symbol for the good.
A real King is humble and responsable since he is the head of the church and a representative of god’s will here on earth that’s why he have to educate his family to be impecable members of society and of the royal court.
I've read that it was Tom's idea that Jeremy should really slap him. They shoot the scene about 6 times and the slaps were always real !
I admire Tom for how far he is willing to go so that a scene looks authentic. Love him
I would have a seizure and a panic attack after. He would have to calm me down because I wouldn't DARE hit him. He's so sweet and kind and I couldn't do it.
How would Tom help me as I crumble on the floor rocking back and forth repeatedly saying sorry?
Why six times? 😢
Tom apparently said this was a real slap and it hurt more because of the rings Jeremy was wearing!
Ow! Explains the expression.
He better have been apologizing after cause I know how that feels
Mrs_Mikaelson I'm sure he did.
Holy mother hubber it was real
Quentin Lennox you can hear the slap echoing
I imagine Scar shouting "I'm _ten times_ the king Richard was!" as he slapped Loki.
Lol three Disney references in one comment!
Pow! Right in the kisser
@@jenniferwills9752 hol' up where did you get that from?!
I jumped when he was slapped. I was NOT expecting that!
That was a good slap. It's as if Henry IV wants to say "Look, I didn't steal this crown from my cousin for you to roll around drunk with the lower orders. ACT RIGHT!!" Love it.
Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Irons it's legendary.
+Shadana Elfgirl I know right
Is Tom a fan of Jeremy’s? It would be awesome if he was as excited to work with Jeremy as people are to see the two of them act together😊
Scar and Loki, playing "game of thrones" and slappin'
By "Game of Thrones", are you comparing them to Tywin and Tyrion Lannister?
1987AnimeBoy
Yep, they are admitedly remind me of the lannisters family. GOT is inspired after these kingdom's history after all
+Chris tanto awesome that not only I had this in my head while seeing this :D
"I just gave that minute long speech and that's all you have to say?!"
SLAP
There's an uprising to overthrow the king and the king is pissed because the prince is off running around with ruffians and drinking in taverns instead of acting princely. Then the king goes on to say how when he was Prince Hal's age he wouldn't show his face in public and when he did he would act and dress humble so everyone would be impressed and he'd won their loyalty like that (something Hal hasn't been doing). Hal then responds with a less than earnest apology so he gets slapped.
Man Jeremy Irons isn't kidding around when he hits people...
Whoa, that sounded like a REAL slap! You could feel it through the screen!
Ivybluerose it was a real slap.
I do love how at the last leg of Irons tearing down his son you hear his voice breaking to show the breaking of his heart but as a king in front of others he composes himself to finish.
"I shall here after my thrice gracious lord, be more myself"
*slap*
i think..
It’s actually “I shall hereafter my thrice greatest lord they all myself” simple typo it’s ok
My whole body vibrated when Tom got slapped...I felt that...ohooooh Thankfully his pretty face was not rearranged!
I agree, it breaks my heart to think someone would only watch such a great adaptation to drool over "Loki", given the fact that Tom is classically trained and Shakespeare was probably one big reason for becoming an actor! Also, Shakespeare is just awesome!
I actually did come to watch it since I loved Loki so much. But after watching his episodes I had to watch the whole series because it was so good! And not just Hiddleston's episodes!
I think it's a good thing that people watch the series, regardless of their own respective reasons. There is something to be gained in watching it even if only to look at Prince Hals segments. I'm grateful Hiddleston did this because it introduced me to literature I never would have otherwise watched :))
I went into this whole series because it legitimately has all of my favorite actors in it. I think it’s nice to see Tom in a role that ISNT Loki.
@@tinyegg2825 As a Shakespeare teacher, I agree. My students were much more interested in history plays after this series came out, and if Tom Hiddleston and Patrick Stewart are a draw, that's ok. They're good actors with Shakespearean training and experience (and in Hiddleston's case, a Double First in Classics).
I watched the Thor franchise because Hiddleston played Loki and I loved the Shakespeare vibe of the first movies. I stopped enjoying it after they changed register and just steamrolled it into a guardians of the galaxy proxy. It's transferred to the Loki series too. I miss Shakespeare Loki. They're misusing Hiddleston
@@beaq6755 I must say, I have to agree 😓😞
He looks SO BLONDE! hahaha he's freaking Prince Charming! love him!
True. I do agree that Tom IS gorgeous BUT I came here because of how brilliant an actor he is, I love his style and talent so much. There is a lot to appreciate here, an incredible performance, from both of them. Bravo!
I had a feeling Hal was going to get slapped like a second before it happened because of his cynical little smile.
he diserves it!!!
Dislike. Oh and? Go to school and learn how to spell!
My brother is used to getting slapped a lot.
Deadpan. Complete murderous deadpan.
😂😂😂😂😂
I cant-😂🤣
How come you didn’t point out that Scar is used to slapping people?
What about you? Jane smacks you quite a bit too
Who else was distracted by thoughts of running their fingers through Tom's hair? ;)
Me! Me! Me!
straburyred Me to!
Me
Me!!!
Someone needs to make a compilation of Tom getting slapped in this, Thor 2, Crimson Peak etc.
I get a feeling present-day Prince Harry needed a lecture like this 😁
This really displays some seriously fine acting. We take it for granted that Irons is an excellent actor, but Hiddleston is not given his dues by those who have only seen him in Loki mode. His performance as the Prince is very moving. Hal has peacefully frolicked and gamboled through his youth, and his behavior has stood at odds with his father's frustrated and paranoia-wracked adulthood. Hal has not simply been sowing wild oats for its own sake. He's not in rebellion to society. He wishes not to oppose his father, he's just aware that one day, very soon, he will BE his father and he is delaying that day's arrival as long as possible. What's regrettable is that the King has been so wrapped up in the mentally-taxing duties of his reign, that he hasn't tried to figure out what makes his son tick. Hal practically oozes love for his father; he worships him. Hal's last response to the King, while light-hearted in tone, was truthful and keenly felt. Hal meant it. Too bad his father didn't catch on. Hiddleston's face said it without words, "I've failed him again." Heartbreaking. Imho, Kenneth Branagh was a dope. Hiddleston originally read for the part of Thor and not Loki. While Loki has been a lot of fun, it would have been more fun to see him flex his acting muscles as Thor. Let's face it, Hemsworth's abs got him that job and not his acting abilities. Part of the charm of Hiddleston's performance as Loki, is that it stands in such stark contrast to Hemsworth's likable enough, but completely wooden, performance as Thor. We should be sympathizing with the hero, not the villain. Dumb casting choice. Hemsworth may have the abs, but Hiddleston's got the depth. Missed opportunity!
@@juliaverdaguerpuperi2206 I doubt Tom would agree with such opinions on his co star. The two characters work very well together. No one is dead weight. And Chris also has great comedic timing on his own, which is far from easy.
@@theaterpup3466 Yeah, I agree with you. I guess I was just having a bad day lol. I watched Thor Ragnarok recently and I see what you mean :)
@@juliaverdaguerpuperi2206 Ragnarok's my fav, the banter is so good there.
So Tom gets slapped here. He also got punched in The Avengers, and had multiple real-hit takes in T:tdw from Natalie...Tom, I'm starting to wonder. Do you like being hit?
6 People agree that Tom actually enjoys getting hit enough to let his co-workers punch him on set.
I'm glad others agree with my suspicions XD
+Aubren Lewis he did say he enjoyed Natalie hitting him...
he is an aquarius...theyre known for their kink...
RinJaganshi Oh my gods someone finally responded xD
Haha, have you seen HiddlestonAstrology on tumblr? From what I can remember, there was a specific thing indicating he was really submissive or dominant (maybe I'm wrong) but he definitely has a kinky nature foretold in his planets XD
+Aubren Lewis that's nothing you should see what happens in night manager and crimson peak
gingaddict I wish I have :o
Ouch. Poor Loki..... -coughs- I meant Harry.....
Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston - can it get better
That's what the five fingers said to the face.
haha UNITY!!!! fuck yo couch, darknesses
Holy crap the voices of loki and scar in one movie
It is great to see Henry IV on film. The performances were outstanding. Tom Huddelston has given a gentle side to Harry
I'm sorry, but when I hear Jeremy Irons speak I still picture Scar doing the talking.
Disney, you have ruined me for life.
…. I'm not going to hear anything else now
>_
Makuraiac You're welcome. :)
same here lol
you hear Lion King but I swoon and hear Charles Ryder from Brideshead Revisited 😉😊
And he is the Butler Alfred too
I'm brazilian and rather proud of the fact that I watch a lot of period and historical dramas without subtitles, but this?? My god... I can barely understand what they're saying! Thank god for facial expressions...I know it's Shakespeare, and it's not supposed to be easy reading, but still...
Marvel vs DC Teaser : Alfred Pennysworth slapped Loki, the God of Mischief
The best part is that it wasn't a stage-slap, either; he ACTUALLY slapped him in the FACE.
I wasn't that crazy about "Richard II", but it was absolutely essential in order to understand both "Henry IV" & "Henry V". I had seen the advertisement with Tom Hiddleston, but then got more & more into the story (actually got them out of the library & started reading them before watching). Since "The Hollow Crown" won't be shown on U.S. TV until either Dec or Jan, I'm very grateful to those wonderful folks who have uploaded all 4 episodes. Tom was great, and so was the rest of the cast.
That slap broke the sound barrier or something. damn that was loud
as long as Tom Hiddleston is in it (and doesnt die) i will adore whatever program it is.
That sounded like it hurt A LOT! Xx
Welcoming Hal Auden Cumberbatch to the world. His dad named him after Shakespearean hero, who his close friend played in The Hollow Crown.
WoW! Awesome!
That made my face hurt. Owie. And I am just blown away by how perfect Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston are in their roles. They really do look related!
Yes, I like shakespeare and many of the lines and the actors were so poetic, I've been to see Richard III in London's Shakespeare's Globe Theatre which took a dark humour approach, if you ever get the chance to see a play there go (I'd recommend dry weather and a seat cos we were standing in the yard haha, still a wonderful experience!)
how dare he slap tom in the face
he's the king, he can do whatever he wants
Wonderful performance by two of my favorite actors, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston :)
that wasa harsh slap man..poor baby
the scene with Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleson in it together are the best scenes in the show in my opinion
In light of Hiddleswift, is it possible that Jeremy Irons might be the voice of reason here? Ehehehe!
Hiddleston, not Hiddleswift LoL, and yes I love this play!!!!
I love this play and I love this scene. An amazing performance.
Ohmigoodness, was that Jeremy Irons?? You know its funny, Scar and Loki are oddly similar, both are princes who were envious of their brothers, usurped thrones, have long dark manes, posh British accents, and bright green eyes. Its uncanny
At first I watched this for tom, and then I fell in love with Ben whishaw's performance too! I think part 1 is excellent, I hate how some people skip it. Plus tom hiddleston. :P
“Look at those cheekbones... I could cut myself slapping that face. Would you like me to try?”
Looks like someone helped Irene with her little fantasy. Even if it wasn’t Benedict. Thanks a lot, Jeremy.
OMG Tom Hiddleston is amazing and I Love him so much.I only want to watch this because Tom Hiddleston.
Jeremy - it's real humanization of Scar! He sounded his in multfilm.
BAM You got Iron'd son!
Is it just me or like Tom’s hair is so cool.....😘😘😘
That’s right! Smirk at a king again Fool!!
Tom told Jeremy to go all out for that slap! I guarantee that would have hurt.
Imagine if Henry V could have known he would be played by 3 highly respected actors!
Henry was a real person?!
@@thestrugglingwriter5254Yes, Shakespeare's historical plays (Henry IV, Henry V, etc) were about real people.
In this case, this is Henry IV (I don't remember if it was the first or second Henry IV).
At the end of the 2nd Henry IV, the new king (Henry V) has been crowned--and then proceeds to cast off the crowd his father criticized.
What good deeds have I done in a previous life to have both Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston in the same production?
*gasps* who would want to hit a perfect flawless face like that?!
That's what happens when you get cheeky Tom.
oh my.. i was really shocked! he just slap him like what..
I will only watch this for one reason and one reason only...TOM HIDDLESTON
Yeah, you're right.
The 4 who disliked this video have no class.
my god that was a slap and a half
HOW CAN YOU SLAP THIS BEAUTIFUL FACE?!
Tom Hiddleston a huge rising force good solid actor for sure
Is it written somewhere that Tom be slapped in all shows and films he's in?
I believe it's on this Saturday night :)
0:48...Good! That hat wasn't doing anything for him.
nice hat, Hal!
YES
Listen, everybody in this line of replies. I am a huge Shakespeare fan. I am a huge Tom Hiddleston fan. The fact that his other work is bringing people who wouldn't normally do so to watch a Shakespeare adaptation is something we should be celebrating, not lamenting. It could even turn someone's opinion on him around. Even if it doesn't, hey, Shakespeare's not for everybody, that's their choice. You know, let people alone for what they do and don't appreciate.
i felt the pain
All I see is Scar talking to Loki and then slapping him lol
Dang Jeremy!!!! When he slaps...he slaps!
Poor Tom. Gettin hit all the time...
It is, in fact, a real slap.
As far as I know, Tom Hiddleston wanted the scene to look real, so it was his suggestion that Irons would really slap him.
The only problem with this scene, and with Henry IV the play, is that the real Prince Hal was nothing like the character in the play. He was serious, hard headed, had ruled the kingdom when his father was ill, and was determined to bring war back to France as soon as he ascended the throne. He pursued his goals with single minded vigor. He was not a party animal, nor was he much inclined to spend time with women. One of the reasons he and his father argued was that the Prince wanted war with France while his father inclined against it. It should also be known that Hotspur was the same age as King Henry IV not his son.
Shakespeare's "Histories" are historical fiction using real names, they're not meant to be accurate in any way.
I cannot wait to see the entire thing, they are both such great actors!
anyone got subtitles for this 😩 ive got an assignment due today…
After that the king had to go to the heeling room because he cut his hand
Very detailed, thank you. Not yet used to Shakespeare.
He's gonna feel that one in the morning!
Yup! "Light and fair" as described by himself ;)
i knew it was coming but....dang that slap to the face was intense!
It's a bit disappointing that so many people thumbed this up. Does nobody actually care about the play? It was awesome!
Hiddles is the only person who could make me willingly want to watch Shakespeare...
So this was the day I started reading every damn thing with British accent.
Damn Jeremy Irons makes a good Henry Bolingbroke...
That looked like a real hard slap too
The final scene had me cracking up!
I think my Shakespeare to English dictionary is broken; what did Prince Hal say to warrant getting slapped?
Prince Hal was too beautiful and the kingdom was getting jealous so it became the duty of Henry IV to mess up his face....lol I'm actually not sure what he said to deserve that, still trying to work that out :P
It was the smirk on his face as he said it.
stpaulimdog
OH! Re-watching, I think I understand now. Henry IV was giving Hal the usual parent-child "You're an idiot, why was I cursed with such a worthless kid, I've got enough problems without you acting like a moron all the time" speech, and Hal gave him the usual cheeky/smartass/sarcastic "Well, not everyone can be as perfect as you" response.
ztslovebird Pretty much.
iammadness
Still, it'd be helpful if Dot Warner or Yakko Warner were here to translate these lines for those who, like the actors, have no idea what's being said.
I love Henry IV when was this on TV!?
all i hear is scar from the lion king XD and at the end ouch! *cringe*
He gets off on it
Wooo, did that slap ECHO!
I felt that slap in my kidneys...oh my goodness...ouch!
Whoa. At first I had no idea what he was talking about, but could appreciate the brilliant performance! Very well done sir, and other sir!
That slap at the end - good gracious, it sounded sharp! I actually cringed.
DAAAAAAAMMMNNNN!!!...I felt that slap all the way from the US!! O_O
Whenever I hear Jeremy Irons speak, I'm all like 'OMG SCAR!' I'm 21. I'm in college. Wtf brain?! Lol!
Scar slaps Loki. Jeremy Irons & Tom Hiddleston are more connected than people realize. Not only are they father & son in this film, the aforementioned characters, which they played and made iconic, are quite similar.
Oooohh, I quiver with FEEEAAAHHH
