I have literally watched this video once every 5-6 months for 7 years, and it is still my favorite drum composition. The playing is wonderfully organic, and the groove he settles into right after 5:55 ... I've been listening to metal for over a decade and I've never heard something so crunchy that wasn't backed by guitar. Pennie is Lord.
I've seen a lot of impressive drummers in my time, but Chris Pennie still blows me away. It's been 15 years since _Calculating Infinity_ was released, and he's still the single most impressive drummer I can name. What he does, is fucking impossible unless you have two brains. Chris Pennie has two brains. He's a robot. Or he's Commander Data. I can't figure it out. Yet.
This dude is one of the top drummers in the world, reading through some of these comments makes me laugh at all the haters and the mindless opinions I see. If you don't like this video, your ear just isn't at the correct spot...maybe one day when you grow up it will be.
Every so often I come back to this video to remind myself of why I'm still such a huge fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan. And it's not just because of Ben and Greg. Pennie is superhuman.
So refreshing seeing a dude that doesn't have a rack, chromatically tuned toms and seven kicks to sound fuckin incredible. No show, all technique, talent, and musicality. He's a jazz drummer at heart...
Yeah..something with his hands...the way he plays its like flows so much...i mean it looks so "calm" while there is so much nerve...like his wrists are so rubber.....
@aliont so you mean you like the neil peart kind of solos? Chris Solo is somewhat countable. mainly you count 123 123 123, except he kinda changes the starting of one once in a while. you can hear that his base drum , hi hat pattern keeps on repeating. so if you really want to count, that's where you start I guess. but what makes this awesome is how he can keep his feet somewhat the same while his hands are changing timings if this make sense...........
He primarily uses Saturn, in all classic sizes. I can't remember the exact dimensions, but his snare is usually 14x7, he uses a 12x9 rack tom, and a 16x16 floor tom. I think his bass is an 18x20 or something.
@fcpusername neverender is not an album, and if you're referring to 'no world for tomorrow', he didn't play drums on the album, but the drums were still mostly written by him...
Same here dude. I couldn't be happier! Two of my favourite (non-Metal) bands: Co&Ca and DEP. I hope that Coheed's next album is INSANE (time-signature wise). I wouldn't want Chris to go all conventional now. Can't wait for the new record!
coheed has some weird crazy beats. i like this guy. i think he will definetly bring coheed to the next level in their upcoming album. I LOVE COHEED!!!!
Except they aren't. No one is a "born talent" -- Chris has likely been practicing for thousands of hours to attain his skillset, just like the greatest of drummers have.
dont kno wut u guys are aguing about i thought it was really good. For anyone confused about the times he was talking about 5/4 which actually isnt that hard to understand its basicly just counting to 5 instead of 4 in the same pattern, theres no strang triplet feels or anything like 6/8 for example i guess is what im saying.
@rocket625 More importantly than him being the current drummer for coheed and cambria, he is the former drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan. His playing was more showcased while with Dillinger, IMO.
I don't really think it's a drum solo. He's showing different ways of working 5/4...if you listen to what he says in the beginning. As for a "cymbal solo" when he kicked off his snares and played a 5/4 buzzsaw I forgot about the opening.
I actually like this drum solo. There's not much rhythm, but for the technicalities of it, its a really really good drum solo. Something that will definitely give you 100 in a HSC exam.
this guys great, so are zach hill and gabe serbian. theyre all on that special level of playing. vinnie is also a great guy (gotta know about VINNIE C!!
Dillinger needs him 100% Although for me personally the only albums/EPs that are Dillinger, is Running Board. Calculating infinity and irony is a dead scene (one of the greatest collab records of all time)
this guy is awsome. He plays wierd things, where all of his hands and legs plays totally different things but he makes it sound perfect anyway... like his bass plays 5/4 while his hand plays 3 to 4 and left foot goes totally wierd with some markings on the hihat and the snare goes straight 4/4 but with perfectly marked ghosthits...thats not exactly what he plays here but just for an example.. Its extremely hard to play those wieird comps where nothing fits alone but everything fits together

Still watching it every couple of months? I saw your message way back when. 5:55 still does it for me.
Chris H here today!
I've seen a lot of impressive drummers in my time, but Chris Pennie still blows me away. It's been 15 years since _Calculating Infinity_ was released, and he's still the single most impressive drummer I can name.

Whos still here watching it from time to time? So impressive...
Is left foot is a national relic
Never skips a beet. Ruthless drummer. So underrated
He was my neighbor in Hopatcong New Jersey back in the early 80’s and played a lot as kids 👍👍
so fucking good. i watch this probably like once a week. he has probably the most professional and discplined playing and technique ive ever seen.
18 years later and I’m still impressed! 😮
This dude is one of the top drummers in the world, reading through some of these comments makes me laugh at all the haters and the mindless opinions I see. If you don't like this video, your ear just isn't at the correct spot...maybe one day when you grow up it will be.
i watch this all the time and it never gets any less impressive
Every so often I come back to this video to remind myself of why I'm still such a huge fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan. And it's not just because of Ben and Greg. Pennie is superhuman.
Wow! This guy has got some amazing concepts. Great solo.
So refreshing seeing a dude that doesn't have a rack, chromatically tuned toms and seven kicks to sound fuckin incredible. No show, all technique, talent, and musicality.
He's a jazz drummer at heart...
i watch this video few months and it always makes me wanna practice doubles like crazy
one of the best solos i have seen .. top marks for creativity ! awesome.
That's one hell of a groovy solo. I love it.
i'd love to hear a whole album of stuff like this. the buildups are so awesome.
jeff mcquiggan listen to the first Dillinger Escape Plan album. Thank me later.
Quite simply unique! Great drummer, great band!
Something is just so interesting about is playing. He plays in such a unique way.
Yeah..something with his hands...the way he plays its like flows so much...i mean it looks so "calm" while there is so much nerve...like his wrists are so rubber.....
I'd love to see more of this clinic.
on top of playing in three different time signatures, he's pulling poly rhythyms all over the place. chris is amazing.
@RiouxItsMe, if im not mistaken he temp toured with coheed and he wasnt spending time with dillinger which caused the tension.
still the greatest drumming I've heard
amazing stuff the odd time sig. is crazy, the non stop heart beat kick sound, the hi hat, and his ghost notes are just crazy!
@aliont so you mean you like the neil peart kind of solos? It might be the resolution on my phone, but is he dragging all those doubles in the beginning bell/hi hat work? Or playing actual doubles
still my favorite solo of all time
Chris is throwing down. Excellent drummer
@fcpusername neverender is not an album, and if you're referring to 'no world for tomorrow', he didn't play drums on the album, but the drums were still mostly written by him...
It's incredibly hard for me to interpret this... but the harder I listen I can make sense out of it.
Must be hard as hell.
Same here dude. I couldn't be happier! Two of my favourite (non-Metal) bands: Co&Ca and DEP. I hope that Coheed's next album is INSANE (time-signature wise). I wouldn't want Chris to go all conventional now. Can't wait for the new record!
THIS IS INSANE! just try to keep in time with that! hahah thats fuckin awesome man. this guy is awesome.
that was pure amazing
Reminds me of something Morgan Agren would play.
Phenomenal technique. Each of the man's limbs is sentient
incredible grooves
brunswick guitar center? i go there all the time... sweet.
Coheed & Cambria is amazingly talented. Chris rocks and so do they.
ya man im excited to see this guy with coheed at warped and hear him in the new album
coheed has some weird crazy beats. i like this guy. i think he will definetly bring coheed to the next level in their upcoming album. I LOVE COHEED!!!!
man those are some insane polyrhythms... that ending reminded me of the ending to ticks and leeches by tool.
That all sounds right to me. Very nice.
i.am.blown.away.
Sheer technical ability + creativity = Yes.
who would you put above him?
this guy is so above almost every fucking drummer ever
Except they aren't. No one is a "born talent" -- Chris has likely been practicing for thousands of hours to attain his skillset, just like the greatest of drummers have.
unbelievable feeling
exactly what type of grip is he using- meaning is there a specific name for his hand technique? because id like to learn it
My head nearly exploded trying to count that
i love his polyrhythms great player:)
dont kno wut u guys are aguing about i thought it was really good. that was fucking amazing.
sick drumming love it :D
so so good
@rocket625 More importantly than him being the current drummer for coheed and cambria, he is the former drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan. His playing was more showcased while with Dillinger, IMO.
I can't wait for Coheed's next album, when he actually gets to play on it. Should be sick.
Not only is it technically insane. He has an awsome beat to compete with too. That world beat made my nose bleed...
amazing!
WOW!!!!
Very Cool,Just wish the audio quality was better
Please upload more, I beg you.
What is music worth if it is not pleasing to the ear?
awesome coordination
why don't you watch the whole thing?
His drum solo on Coheed's neverender is awesome
Deserves more views
Does some one know about the brand and edition of the crash and the china?
He loves his cymbals!
Cymbals are nice.
Brann played in a mathcore band Lethargy. You should listen to their songs. His drumming really resembles Chriss Pennies on those tracks.
WE ALL BEG. UPLOAD MORE PLEASEEEEEEEEE :/
Still begging
this dude is from now know as God of drums...
holy shit my brain hurts that was amazing
chris pennie was great on this video and calculating infinity
pennie is amazing
I don't really think it's a drum solo. He's showing different ways of working 5/4...if you listen to what he says in the beginning. As for a "cymbal solo" when he kicked off his snares and played a 5/4 buzzsaw I forgot about the opening.
@mejomejomejo
Pennie has excellent technique and the reason you think it's just noise, is probably because the audio quality of the recording is crap.
he's not in Dillinger Escape Plan anymore he is in Coheed and Cambria.
やべーーーーーーー
すごいすぎ!
超カッコイイ
His polyrhythms and strokes are fucking dead on.
That heartbeat was the only thing i saw his !!!
That left foot. End of conversation
Can't believe I've been calculating infinity for 20 years.
Oh, don't worry guys, I can play that.
NAWT. Arms and legs would get so confused I'd end up in a pretzel. This guy's a BEAST.
Chris is a damn genius
I actually like this drum solo. There's not much rhythm, but for the technicalities of it, its a really really good drum solo. Something that will definitely give you 100 in a HSC exam.
Sweet drum solo
this guys great, so are zach hill and gabe serbian. theyre all on that special level of playing. vinnie is also a great guy (gotta know about VINNIE C!!
from 3:15-4:25 is gold, the rest is just noise even with the impressive time signature shit
3:10-4:30 is really cool.. i like his main crash.. sounds nice
ire works and miss machine are really the only DEP albums i have any intrest in, but boy are both of them great!!
not to surprised you're saying that since you're a travis barker fan.
Dillinger needs him 100%
Although for me personally the only albums/EPs that are Dillinger, is Running Board. Calculating infinity and irony is a dead scene (one of the greatest collab records of all time)
i always wonder what it's like to play that good.
@Zw1d so is all other music. it's just that. noise. your point?
cant figure out if thats sarchasm or not :p ?
Then how come he needs a doublebass for Welcome Home?
He's so coordinated that he can even chew his gum on a different beat. Pennie for Prez.
Awww shit! That polyrhythm at 2:05 is super groovy! He seems really nervous when talking, but he does a damn good job!
this guy is awsome.
It might not be that he needs a double bass pedal, its just that 2 bass pedals or 2 bass drums would give the best sound.
