As a child I learned to play the piano and violin ... _adequately._ Although I loved doing it, I had no real musical talent. Nevertheless I made to first violin in the school orchestra and was called on, for 3 years, to play the school anthem at speech days. TBH I just memorised the whole thing and never referred to the music sheet in front of me. Not that I ever learned to quickly sight read and play a new piece. Even today I can pick out the different instruments in an orchestra and listen to only them should I desire!

Okay, so my brothers and I were homeschooled by our batshit crazy adopted mother at the time, and she had us start school in October and finish in May (basically complete every year of high school 2 months early). She shut down my brothers account in April because he had Cs and Bs and that didn't fit her standard. And, she made him repeat 8th grade (when he was supposed to be in 11th) and then wondered why he had to take another year of public high school before he could graduate.

"If you go to an extreme of a spectrum, the kid will counter it with the other end of the spectrum."
100% true. My dad usually verbally abuses me with academic stuff, and he gets extremly angry when they discover a lie or smth.
After an incident that happened where I failed a test, I told a friend what happened and they offered me to give me the answers to math tests if I felt too overwhelmed.
Right now I have around A's in math when I usually have like C.
This is what fucking happens when you make your daughter fear you; they'll look any way to avoid a repeat, even if it they know it's wrong.

Respect has two meanings; treating someone like a human or treating someone like an authority.
Many of these parents say 'respect me and I will respect you", when they mean "treat me like an authority and I will treat you like a human"
~Don't remember where I first read this, but it has stuck with me

      that's a great quote!
Except many people in authority seem to forget that just because they are in charge, doesn't mean they can do whatever they want.
In fact, they can often have less freedoms, if they want to keep that power relationship intact.

Lol I had my door taken away in high school. My parents and I got into a huge fight and I needed to walk away before I said/did something stupid but it was too late at night to go for a walk to calm down, so I went into my room and locked my door. They followed me, pounded on the door, screaming about how they were going to kick my ass when I opened, etc. I just laughed and told them that if they were going to kick my ass then I definitely wasn't going to open it. They tried getting it off the hinges and couldn't. When they finally calmed down enough that I felt safe, I opened it. And they took my door. Made zero impact on what I did in my room, just made it more annoying for them when I played my music

10:58 Here’s the thing about respect: sometimes respect means showing kindness, other times it means showing deference. A lot of times manipulators will switch out the two definitions in one sentence. They say “If you don’t respect me, I won’t respect you” but they mean “if you don’t treat me like an authority, I won’t treat you like a human being.”

    • @creepergoboom2943

And this is why I love my parents:
Even at a young age, when we were all still Christians, they made sure to tell us "It's okay if you don't believe in God, it's okay if you don't believe in any religion. It's okay if you aren't straight, it's okay if you don't want sex at all, it's okay if you don't identify as a boy/girl. It's okay if you fail a test/assignment." My parents accepted me with open arms when I told them I was asexual. They of course helped guide us in a good direction in life, but also made sure not to make decisions for us. They'd help pick up the pieces if we fucked up, but never ridiculed us for it.
They are okay with their kids doing something as a career, even if it's not the most "desirable", or the most "respectful." They just want us to be ourselves and be happy.

When I was in 6th grade, I carried this sketchbook around everywhere. Literally everywhere. I was a straight-A student, and I got along with most of the teachers fine. Well, one day this lady came in to give a presentation. I was in class before the bell rang, so I decided to add a bit more to a drawing I had been working on for 2 days. The second the bell rang, I had it taken away from me by this presenter. I wasn't even doing anything distracting or wrong. Again, I was a fairly quiet and good student. She told me, and I remember this strangely well, "There will be time for doodling later." That pissed me off. Later on, when my class started talking the tiniest bit, she went on a rage. "I am an adult! I am the teacher! You will respect me! Is that clear?" I remember throughout the class's various "yeps" and "yes, Mrs. Doyle," I muttered no. It came out louder than I intended. Long story short, I got yelled at, but I ended up getting my sketchbook back. To this day, thinking about that bitch pisses me off. My logic was the same as Click's: No one deserves respect by default. She was just an idiotic, irritating, dehydrated bag of sticks who couldn't see that kids are humans, not robots.

I also have my sketchbooks and writing notebooks in a box underneath my bed so she can’t find it. She thinks that any privacy I have is bad. With me and my mom, she always tells me I’m allowed to tell her anything she’s doing wrong, and I respect her for saying that, but when it actually comes to me talking to her about what she’s doing wrong, she immediately takes it personal and starts listing everything she does right instead of acknowledging what she’s actually doing. I remember her yelling at me when I was around 5 for feeling sad, because apparently my cousin “has it worse than me”. She doesn’t think that way about me feeling sad anymore, but you know. She also constantly threatens to take away my guinea pigs. If she actually gets rid of them someday, I will stop coming to her house. Another thing, she always tells me she wants to have a good relationship with me when we’re both older, but acts like this. It’s like she’s trying to make me think I’m the problem. Which I take into consideration, that I could be part of the issue. She’s very good at manipulating me sometimes, too. Like how when she started whining to me about how she wants to have a good relationship with me, and then starts crying, constantly looking up to see if I’m watching her “mental breakdown”. Then she yelled at me to leave. I bet you she actually immediately pulled a straight face after that. I hope she saw my flat out “don’t care” face when she was looking for my empathy .If she read this comment, I would prob die of fear.

every time i watch these i always think, “wow i feel so bad. i have it so good.” but then a part of my brain reminds me of how both my parents forced me to play some sort of sport after i quit ballet, at quite a young age mind you, because it was becoming too stressful and controlling. meanwhile my parents were giving me the same level of stress and being very pushy about stuff like “you never do anything! you have to do something with your life! art is not going to get you anywhere. you need to be active in some form of sport, no questions asked!” and when i settled for swimming just to get them off my back, i became even more body conscious and later developed an eating disorder, which is still plaguing me to this day, and if you know, swimming + eating disorder could equal injury or hospitalization if anything were to go wrong. i actually did have a time where i had to lie about eating that day, i hadn’t, and my mom sent me in for practice and halfway through a 200 freestyle i had to pull myself out of the pool because my vision was dissipating and it was getting hard to move. meanwhile my mom was yelling at me from behind the glass.
i no longer take swim. i got through one season before i had to stand up to my mom and explain my situation. they’ve backed off for now. however they still misgender me even after i came out to them as nonbinary. im still unsure of their thoughts on the lgbtq... i was born into a christian family, but they INSISTED that i am accepted, meanwhile my dad cringes and even makes mumbled comments whenever he sees two males holding hands or kissing, and my mom has some sort of grudge against crossdressers that i still cannot place. the only people i really have to turn to are my grandparents and my two aunts. i love my aunts, they’re the crazy and fun type, and i feel like i can be myself around them. and my grandparents show actual effort in understanding my identity and who i am and what i stand for.

TL;DR: Similar story as the one in the timestamp, just in more detail.
One time my mom was in a really bad mood, and she decided to take me and my sister for a walk, but everyone in my family knows that I hate going outside, so I told her I didn't want to. This set her off and she decided to hit me a few times. As she was raising her hand to hit me again, I grabbed her wrist to stop her, and she went berserk and started yelling at me and hit me again, and then we went on the walk. Few minutes later, we come back home. Mom lies to my dad and says that I raised my hand at her, implying that I would hit her. Before I continue, I jusy wanna say that my dad is *scary.* He might be short, but he's a ticking time bomb. So my mom lies, and dad pulls me aside. Surprisingly, he gives me an intimidating lecture, and brings me inside. My mom gets mad and says something like "Why'd you bring her inside?" And I have no idea what my dad responded with, but whatever he said shut my mom up. He told me to just go take a shower and calm down, as I was terrified. Mind you I was 9 when this happened, so I was terrified. Anyways, something happened and they're a lot nicer now, but that still doesn't change my opinion on the subject.

Like i remember how they make fun of me sometimes, and yell at me just because they want to, and how they say that my sister and I can suggest things about their parenting, but that they'll never actually take the suggestions into consideration, and how they say things like "I'm not you KID, you should respect me, I'm your parent." Gen x is whack like that sometimes.

If your parents or caregivers are manipulating you, screaming at you for no reason, making fun of you to the point you don't enjoy it anymore, or anything like that, *they* are in the wrong and you have all right to seek out help. Many stains did end up on the staircase, but it was a result of my mother dropping the soy sauce and it rolling down all the steps. Every. Last. One. The soy sauce bottle even turned the corner, as it was a spiral staircase! Dad had to spend several days sanding the stains out of the wooden planks as they weren't varnished yet when it happened.

Gosh that sounds awful... I'm so sorry. I don't know if you're in that situation anymore but if you are you should talk to someone about it. I once had a serious problem which, I won't go into details, but it caused me a lot of fear about my overall safety. So I went to school and poured my heart out to the teachers, medical team and whoever else would listen. To which they got social services involved. Now that's not a bad thing despite what a lot of people believe, social services are NOT around to snatch children away from their parents unless they believe you are in danger. Their main role is to bring families together and put steps in place on how they can stay that way. You'd be their priority if you contacted childline, a school or college and no matter what you'd say they'd have to investigate it regardless so there's no chance of them calling you a liar on the spot.
I'm not in anyway telling you what you should do, your life is your life and this is merely some friendly advice. But what you mother did was not okay, especially threatening to slap you. That's assault, possibly child abuse if you're a minor. So please, stay safe and know there is help out there if you need it. 💙

8:25 I relate to this way too much. I used to learn how to play the piano for about 9 years, but the teacher never stopped giving me lessons on how to read the sheets
I wasn't particularly bad at it, in fact (like I imagine most people) I could read them easily within the first two years.
But no, apparently, forcing me to read them flawlessly every time is better than actually playing the piano
Because of this, playing the piano became stressful and I was affraid to play it in front of anyone at all, even my family, and them constently telling me "But why don't you just play the piano for once?" did NOT help in the slightest
anyways, it was too stressful, then I stopped learning the piano, my level went down and even today, when I no longer have this kind of pressure, I still only play it for fun once a year
even after it got better, I still can't play because I fear that my past piano experience might happen again (but yes, it's still fun playing it, just that the memories keep me from actually doing it instead of fearing it)

I got a similar thing. But actually it benefited me.
I was never good at singing. I was singing for confirmation. However my 6th grade teacher told me to not sing because my voice is loud and I sound really bad. I tried, that's why I was so loud. Anyways, now I almost never sing. I felt so awkward. Also I was in only boys school and for confirmation 2 schools were singing (boy and girl school) and out of 2 of them I felt like I was the only one not signing.
      So
      A) I was the only one within 70 childern not singing
      B) I was sad just because how hard I tried.
It's a good thing that happened I think, because I still suck at singing and it tought me that I can't be perfect at everything no matter how hard I try.

It's nice working with plants and i guarantee they won't bring you any bad news. Grow a bonsai tree or something. No stress involved and it'd look pretty good in your living room (or bedroom for that matter).
