Remember those big maps they had in school that worked like a roller blind. It would be cool if they made a design “wall” like that. I’d but it. That way if you didn’t need it for a while you could just have it roll up. Yes, I think I’m on to something here…

I'm with you Pat! I would think the flannel would cause a hot mess! If you try, please video to ease my mind as well. :) Maybe a flannel backed table cloth, so the "vinyl" would face your current design wall and you could use the flannel side. Maybe make it to where it unrolls like a blind (you know, the old kind that rolls down, then rolls back up?).

Oh Pat, you have the patience of a saint! Everything you do is so well laid out and easy to find. Still, I guess some people still need you to hold their hand when they want to find things.
As for your design wall -- do what works for you. What you're doing now seems to be working just fine so don't worry about it. It's your home and your business. You should do things how you want. I agree with you about using the other wall. I would rather look at a finished quilt as well!

When thinking about design walls, I’ve often thought about those maps that pulled down from the ceiling when I was in school. Way back when 😉. Something that I could roll down when I needed a design wall but could also be rolled back up to the ceiling when I didn’t need It.

@ RsIslandCrafts - Robin, use a roll up shade. You know one of those plastic ones (I had a white one) or you could use a bamboo one that has tiny reeds. I have seen them as window coverings. You attach a piece of flannel or batting, use pins, glue or tack it on by hand, and you are ready. Place your blocks on there you can roll the blocks all the way up and roll it down when you want to work on it.
It will work over a closet door, on the back of a door or even in a doorway that doesn’t get used very much. Of course the size depends on you, your needs and your space.

You know what would be cool as a design board... remember those maps that they would pull down and roll up like a shade in the classroom...in fact, I think they had multiple maps on one bracket you could pull and roll up... it would be cool if you had one of those with flannel and then stacked design boards!! haha

Putting a flannel over your current design wall will result in a mess and here's how I know. I travel with two flannel faced design boards. They have to be face to face so the patches on them don't come off in my bag, but there has to be something between them that isn't clingy to fabric (paper, usually the instructions). If that's not in place there will be fabric pieces on the floor and on the wrong design board when they are separated. I hold the two design boards together with large elastic bands while in transit. The only thing I can think of that would work over your current design wall would be a flannel backed plastic tablecloth. Your reason for hanging a quilt on your outside wall is indisputable. :) One of our jobs as quilters is to determine for ourselves what works for us and our spaces. I stand in awe of how well you have your space set up and organized! Carry on and thanks for sharing so generously of your expertise. :)

Love the blue stars. It's the right pick! About the flannel over your design wall...first I agree with you to NOT take down those pretty finished quilts you hang on your back wall. They are inspiration! It may not be glamorous, but a flannel backed tablecloth might work instead of plain flannel. It can be rolled up on a pool noodle and stored...somewhere

  • @rebeccasewing
    @rebeccasewing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You could try a flannel-backed tablecloth. The plastic or vinyl side would be against the underneath project and the flannel side facing out to put up another project. Because the plastic/vinyl isn't clingy, I'm assuming it wouldn't disrupt what you have hanging underneath.

I think the flannel over the made quilt would work but not so much on unfinished pieces. I use old cotton sheets over a bed and can fold them away if the bed is needed. Even that way some unfinished pieces underneath stick to the back of the sheet.

I would put a piece of flannel over the quilt on the really busy days you could use it as a design wall, then just take it down when it’s not needed. Nifty Notions has a design wall that is felt, stuff really sticks to it . You can clip it to your frame that’s holding the zinger quilt, that’s what I do at retreats

Your hanging quilt frame with the Red Zinger quilt on it could hold your portable extra design wall. I have the Fons & Porter portable design wall, it has flannel on one side and a plastic backing. It has grommets at the top to hang with. I also like the idea of a design wall behind your quilt on the backside of your table.

Try using a flannel backed table cloth. You can roll up your project stuck to the flannel and the "front" of the table cloth is usually plastic so your project on the wall won't stick.

  • @PapercraftsbyCindyellen

Just a thought...could you hang a design wall behind the finished quilt over the fireplace? Make the design wall more flush and put the finished quilt on a curtain rod extender so you can slide it out of the way when working on the design wall and slide it back when finished? Like when you have 2 layers of curtains...Hope I’m explaining that clearly, lol!

Some thoughts about a second design board. They make extension cords with the wire coming out the side so it is flat against the wall if it has to be behind something. The second board could be in front of the wall board just to be moved away when you need a second one instead of storing it somewhere as your 2nd board. If you put it on the second wall a quilt could still hang in front of it to be enjoyed until you need the second board. You definitely need a second preview space sometimes. ( A lot of the time. LOL)

I would like to see exactly how she sews the squares together. Nesting does not always make them match. Does Pat use glue or pins?

If you are making the Oh My Stars in a larger size how do you suggest laying it out and sewing it together? It’s too large for my design wall.

My question is, what to use to draw with to do the lines. I have different things and the width is so different and it ends up not right.

I am making this quilt and have a question on making the stars. I have place mt 3" square on the upper right corner had have sew on the diagonal. My question is when trimming the back, is there suppose to be 2 pieces that you cut off?

Hi Sylvia! When you do the 'cut away' you do trim the 'back' triangles away and leave the TOP so that is it just ONE layer of fabric instead of 3 layers of fabric
