@@AutoEdits got the oil changed and everything was going swimmingly....until I went back under the Jeep to put the drain plug back in and noticed the canister I bought to collect and recycle the oil leaked...🤦♂️ Note to self - next time I buy one I need to fill it with water first to check that. 😂 Still one of the easier oil changes I’ve ever done.

Great video. Have an oil change to do and appreciate you putting in the specs. 13 mm to 20 foot pounds. 15/16” socket to 15 foot pounds. Being able to see one done again helps ease my nerves that I was forgetting something.

Great suggestion Jason. Another trick when loosening the oil pan plug by hand. To keep oil from coming out past the threads as you loosen and getting on your hands, push in on the bolt. When the bolt gets to the end it will jump on the thread, at that point pull it away. You shouldn't get any oil on your hands. It's worked to keep my hands oil free for years, I hope it works well for you. Stay safe.

Perfect timing for this video! I'm choosing to spend this quarantine to do projects such as this and it's entertaining to see a person, who is as detailed-oriented as I TRY to be, perform this very task. I do say TRY since I spend hours arranging my project BOMs and double-checking online order carts... until I went ahead and spent only seconds when I bought the wrong oil weight.
Did my first oil change yesterday on my Jeep(mostly because the weather was nice) 2 drips on the driveway and one rag... Wasn't too bad. Used 2 of your videos yesterday, oil change and tire rotation. Your videos inspired me... Gave the old Jeep a good once over too!! Thanks!!

Since i was a kid with my first car I have done my own oil changes and a lot more as I learned more. Now as a first time jeep owner my oil changes have never been more easier. I have also in the past with the metal oil filters trapped them in the gloves so they didn't leak oil when taking them to station to get rid of them.
@@AutoEdits pretty common on any v motor that shares architecture with the 3rd gen hemi, they oil oddly which makes the lifters almost last in the system.
Jason, thanks for the video. I had fallen away from changing my own oil. I used to do it when I was younger, but then for a while it was not much difference in cost to have the oil change place do it. Now, though it costs $70-80 to have them do it and I had been thinking about taking it back on. Combine that with the current lock down for the pandemic and I have become more interested. The topper was your video. I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2018 and my wife has a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK, and after seeing how easy and clean the filter replacement is in your video, I'm in! I've ordered the items from Amazon and will be clearing the "Change Engine Oil" message in both jeeps soon!
Jason, as you mentioned you like to get as much of the old oil to drain from the pan. I’m the same way. I pour just a small amount of knew oil to push out all the old. Makes the process a little go a little quicker and I know I’ve got all good/new oil in when I’m done. 🍻👍
I’m like you and want to drain as much as possible when I do an oil change so I usually go out in my garage first thing in the morning and pull the plug, then I go in and have some breakfast, go back out change the filter and then finish up. Beautiful Jeep brother!
Just did my 2016 Wrangler sport today. I used 2 rags though. One for the oil change and one for dumping the old oil back in the jug. I also ALWAYS check under the vehicle once I start it to make sure there is nothing leaking. I double check around the oil filter for leaks while running as well.

10 months later & the stay home stuff is still a reality & I just changed my oil in my 3.8 JK I run the 10w-30 which is what the crate motor calls for on these. The 5w-20 was just for emissions standards for Jeep Glad the 0-20 helped with your noise on start up
Thanks dude! I find if the jeep sits more than a few days I still get that sound at startup so... just a design thing. I also swapped back to 5-20 since it's much cheaper. I did hear from an engineer that it is important to stick to what the engine builder recommends on engines with variable valve timing and other oil pressure activation stuff.
Excellent, you are like me a perfectionist. I too I change my oil between 5K and 6K miles usin full sysnthetic Mobil 1, and keep the engine under the hood very clean which keeps it cooler during Summer months. no grime and no leaks. I like your style very well executed. Cheers. 😊😊
I just got my first jeep and did the oil change. It is very satisfying to do a oil change on her. The best part is I don’t have to Jack her up. It takes 30mins or less
Great video buddy!!! I always tell folks that it is better to under tighten something like that (then just tighten it a bit more if leaks) than to over-tighten it and have to replace everything.
Here is a tip I use on my 10 quart premium synthetic oil change on my supercharged mustang GT. I drain each used oil container into a central container. I end up with a third of a quart of awesome oil for topping off or other projects. If your paying $10 a quart that stuff is gold. I also use a conventional oil catch bucket. I line the bucket with 2 of the Costco white kitchen garbage bags. Change the oil. Tie off the bags. Go to the recycling. Cut the corner of the bag. Drain and discard. Not one drop touches me or my bucket.
I appreciate the fact that you removed the driver's door to get the inside the vehicle shots! Incidentally, the 4.0 V6 in my 5th gen 4Runner is spec'd by Toyota to use 0W20. I'm actually considering trying 0W30 or even 40. These things make A LOT of valvetrain noise that I'd like to quiet down. Also, the Jeep filter setup is much better. Toyota has a cartridge style too, but it's under the vehicle, and on a stock vehicle, the engine skid needs to be removed every time to access it. Which explains why it was missing from my used 4R that had been dealer serviced it's entire life till I bought it. I recently finally got around to drilling out the 4 broken bolts they left in there so I can install aftermarket skids.
I recently did my 3.8L oil... Went surprisingly smooth. I went back to 10W30 (original specified oil for the 3.8L) and went to a Motorcraft FL-400S filter... It's a touch bigger and cheaper than a Mopar filter. Has the same (maybe better?) anti-back flow valve. The oil specification changes due to Jeep needing to meet fuel economy regulations. Thinner viscosity oil can achieve that for very cheap- to an extent. Jeep doesn't change the internal specs for bearings and such when they change the oil specification though. That's probably the main source of issues for the newer Jeep engines. Sorry for the rant- "quarantine" does things to a man! LOL
Another important factor is the variable valve timing in the newer engines. They are designed to run with a very specific oil viscosity and when people change that... it changes how the whole system operates. That's why I don't change from the recommended -20 part of the rating. I learned that when I did the Ram engine... was cool .

My old 3.8L JK had terrible startup rattle if I used a mopar oil filter. Using a wix filter would mostly prevent it. I have not heard the issue on my '17 JKU. The thing I love about the cartridge is you don't have to cut open a metal filter to check for any metal debris or the like.
To quiet down internal noise, replace one quart of your engine oil with one quart of Marvel's Mystery Oil. It also keeps the internals spotless. Do some research on Marvel's and you may be impressed. I've been using the stuff for decades and still have quiet and smooth running engines. I have a 5.3 Chevy van with 280,000 miles with no leaks and zero oil burn and absolutely no noise which is common to have bad lifter noises. Love the channel!
Good advice, I used Marvel for decades as well... the smell reminded me of wrenching with my Grandpa. I have learned that the new technology is better and that having a quart of a product that burns off isn't good in the oil system. I still use it in all my air tools!
I am no mechanic.... but all of your you tube videos have helped with all the things I want to do to my 2016 JKU... just moved into a house with a lift... either I am going to get good at this or hurt myself ;) lol... keep the videos coming 👍
I installed a Stahlbus oil drain plug in my LJ. It makes draining the oil a breeze through the opening in my Savvy offroad engine/ transmission skid. I recommend them to everyone. I've never had anyone else change my oil, but I often see oil changes advertised for around $40. I run Rotella t6 and a premium filter, and my DIY oil changes are around $70. Those oil change places must use the cheapest crap ever.....
I used to do my own oil changes on all my vehicles when I had a place to do it. Once I got older and bad back and 29.95 oil changes I stopped doing my own. It got hard to dispose of the old oil. Oil changes are 69.95 here now so it’s worth it to crawl under and DYI.
Do you wait for the monitoring system to say hey change the oil? I've been changing mine every 5000 kms regardless. Another great video Jason... keep en coming man.
Back for my first few years with the Jeep and using traditional oil, I would change it on somewhat shorter intervals like you do. I drive the thing hard so better safe than sorry. Now that I'm using a high quality synthetic... it honestly doesn't do any extra good to change so early and the oil is much more expensive anyway. This particular oil is good for 8,000 miles or so but I'll still do it at around 5 or 6. Thanks!
I once drained the oil from my FJ Cruiser and then put the new oil in the transmission fill hole. That was an interesting day. Love the channel. Stay healthy!

Thank you!!! I do like these tires a bunch, best riding tires on the street and highway and do great off road. The only real downside is that the BFG and Maxxis look way more aggressive so other than than the looks, they kick butt!
Start it up... look at the filter housing before you put the engine cover back on and look at the drain plug. Turn it off and check the dip stick... easy as that!
When you pull that filter off the cap you want to pull straight out don't torque it. It has a cold oil pressure bypass built in but if you break that connecting point your oil will bypass the filter all the time.
just did a oil change on my dads gladiator 4 days ago 1 i was bored 2 it needed it we went wheeling and the oil was 2k miles old and boy im glad i did it cause that oil was black as crazy as that sounds but we were out there for 2 hours,so 4 total front and back but also thank god i bought some molle panels that go on the bed for my dad as a surprise and some rotopax 2 for fuel and 1 for water and we used them since my dad carelessly said were fine when we went past a gas station and good thing i filled the rotopax whenever i bought em but yeah :D and also the truck is stock but it just has some factory mud terrains with some black rhino kelso wheels(In battleship grey) i bought for him as well :D (took my 15 year old self a bit to save up since i got my little responsibilities aka my wifi and gas for my little honda)
I have noticed with my 2014 even after upgrading to the Center Force Duel Friction clutch my start up noise is coming from my throughout bearing. It is also nice to know what to watch out for. My oil life reminder hasn’t gone off yet with close to 9,000 miles between oil changes. My dealer actually said not to change the oil before the reminder goes off. I’m also running a full synthetic oil.
Hey Jason, great video! It’s interesting that I’ve had my JK since late 2013 and have never done an oil change. Its not that it’s difficult, I’ve been changing my own oil since I was 16 (holy crap, that’s over 40 years!) It’s just been too convenient and actually relatively cheap to get it done at the dealer (seems like they always have special multiple oil change packages). I do like the new filter location, it’s much easier than the old style more near the engine bottom, with the associated oil spill as you remove it (yuk). Well, I just did it for the first time this weekend. I can’t say I matched your single paper towel for cleanup, haha. It went quite well. I did go with the same oil you used so Lucas should be sending you some free products (haha). Again, great video! It motivated me to start doing it myself and using better oil than the dealer likely uses is another advantage.
I didn't get a oil filter seated all the way once, backed out of the bay and saw the mess. That was 20 yrs ago, and to this day I still triple check the filter.
I've used Valvoline advanced full synthetic. I live where temps fluctuate and its been a great oil on preventing wear and not becoming thin at high or thick in colder temperatures. I also run a BG Epr engine clean every 10k and add BG MOA to my oil and that has made the rattle virtually stop. BG can't be sold to the public but can find on Amazon for around 50.00. Everyone has their preferred oil just remember to not go back and forth between manufacturers if you can prevent it. Lastly I love your front bumper. Who makes that?

@ 16:00, let me guess, you touched your camera with your oily hands, thats why its blurry? lol I do have an Exxon Valdez disaster happen to me... trying to pull the oil filter on my '15 Ram 1500, holding it with one hand, it slipped, flipped and dropped on my face. needless to say that by the time I could pick t up, my fave and shirt were covered in oil... not to mention the whole floor. ugh!
That is exactly what happened... I think I actually wiped it with the single paper towel out of habit not realizing it was fairly saturated at that point .... doh!
Oh and my Ram is my least favorite vehicle to do an oil change on! You have to do an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course to get the filter out of that thing! It's awful.

As always, a great , positive video. Guessing you gave Pinto the day off. That's cool. A hard working dog needs time off occasionally. I would luv to do my own oil changes, especially with it being so easy on a Jeep. But, living in an apartment with only an outdoor parking spot, it's not really feasible, especially in snow and -20°C temps.
The stewards have some questions regarding the glovage. We see you put on gloves then whilst pouring fresh oil into the jeep you are sans gloves. Mysteriously gloves reappear on YOUR hands during the absolutely riveting cleaning the oil drain/recycling doohickey scene. Please explain, did you reuse the gloves, or were TWO sets of gloves used which would nullify the perfect score? You have some 'splaining to do.
Extraordinarily good catch! Those are the same gloves and to be honest... it was kind gross putting them back on cause they were a bit sweaty... LOL But, single set of gloves used!!!
I like to reuse the same set of gloves until they tear. When I’m done I wash my hands (gloves on) just like I would if I wasn’t wearing gloves, and then set them to dry until next time.

I’ve tried about 3 different oil catch devices from Walmart bought to auto store and using them to change the oil on my 3” lifted 35” tire 13’ 2door JK, it ALWAYS resulted with oil all over the oil catch and ground with the annoying laying down with the catch to follow the pour to keep in the catch. My fix? Paint bucket with lid. After numerous trips to auto store to discard used oil, I quickly found buying a paint bucket lip pour guide to be a must because the used oil drums at the auto stores (at least the 4 different ones in my area I’ve gone to) had the smallest entry point to to pour into. Don’t understand why they have that lid on their drums knowing the obvious, but save yourself time/frustration and the NEED to walk in with shop towels to clean yourself off with once done. Yeah, for whatever annoying reason each time they also were never nice enough to give me some paper towel etc to wipe my hands off after watching me once done. Side note: the store bought catches, most are the flat pan catches are every curse word worthy when trying to dispense in their used drums. Lol. I’ve even taken my used oil to recycling garbage dump and even theirs were either “full” closed lid or some even stopped doing that of which I can only assume they’ve had people make an absolute mess doing so.
I've never forgotten to put the drain plug in before filling with oil, but I have however forgotten to reinstall the oil filter in specific Dodge engines after doing a transmission swap. That makes one hell of a mess.

It would have to be north pole temps to make a difference but I recommend using the stock 5w20 purely due to the cost difference. If I leave the jeep parked for several days and do a cold start ... it still makes the rattle but for just one second. Shorter than it used to for sure and during periods of use, it never does it. So it's up to you.
I'm so happy that you even remember that but it's getting harder to get out and do these videos since the views are SO low and the virus is SO serious. Seemed even more silly than usual to encourage people to enjoy their drive right now.
Jason, great video. My dad and I have been just using conventional with a 3k - 3.5k mike interval. He had an 04 WJ purchased new with the infamous 4.7L sludge monster V8. After 200k the valve cover gasket was leaking, so we took off the valve cover to change the gasket and the cams and entire valvetrain still looked brand new. I’ve had my 17 JK since it had 5 miles and have been changing the oil every 3k on the dot with conventional. I now have 60k. I peeked down the fill tube with a light and everything still looked new. The valve tick only happens for about 1 second if I don’t drive the Jeep for a couple days. If I drive every day it never happens. Cheers! Edit: PS how many miles do you have, and how us your clutch? Has it ever needed replacement?
Yeah, the rattle isn't horrendous, I just like solving that stuff with technology. The main thing I gain from going with synthetic is how long it lasts at full protection. If you watch this video again and check the oil coming out... that has about 7000 miles on it and looks amazingly good. I think this thing is around 70k and original clutch doing solid so far.
yup poured about $120 worth of motul in the floor, only noticed when i looked down and saw my feet were in a puddle, many 4 letter words flew around the garage that day.
This video (plus taking into account it's now pushing $80 in my area to get a lub,oil & filter change) got me to finally go back to changing my own oil. I did my 2018 Jeep Wangler Unlimited JL. Ok, so I'm a little rusty. I have one of the oil pans you showed (not the nice catch jug) and I bought a jug with a wide mouth to pour the oil from the pan into. Well let's just say it was far from a perfect oil change. I will be either trying to stop the oil 1/2 way into the change and pour that, or spring for a new jug / pan combo like you showed! Practice makes perfect :-) On a separate note, when I put the oil plug back in, as I got about 2/3 through turning it, I could feel a grittiness. I'm thinking I have metal shavings in the pan??? I could feel no shavings in the oil that was on the plug itself. Not sure what to do about that.... any good suggestions would be welcome. I seams like I should be inspecting further and getting the filings out somehow. Since it's still under warranty maybe I should just report it to my jeep dealer service writer...?? Thanks

Great suggestion Jason. Another trick when loosening the oil pan plug by hand. To keep oil from coming out past the threads as you loosen and getting on your hands, push in on the bolt. When the bolt gets to the end it will jump on the thread, at that point pull it away. You shouldn't get any oil on your hands.
It's worked to keep my hands oil free for years, I hope it works well for you. Stay safe.

Perfect timing for this video! I'm choosing to spend this quarantine to do projects such as this and it's entertaining to see a person, who is as detailed-oriented as I TRY to be, perform this very task. Since i was a kid with my first car I have done my own oil changes and a lot more as I learned more. Now as a first time jeep owner my oil changes have never been more easier. I have also in the past with the metal oil filters trapped them in the gloves so they didn't leak oil when taking them to station to get rid of them.

@@AutoEdits pretty common on any v motor that shares architecture with the 3rd gen hemi, they oil oddly which makes the lifters almost last in the system.
Jason, thanks for the video. I had fallen away from changing my own oil. I used to do it when I was younger, but then for a while it was not much difference in cost to have the oil change place do it. Now, though it costs $70-80 to have them do it and I had been thinking about taking it back on. Combine that with the current lock down for the pandemic and I have become more interested. The topper was your video. I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2018 and my wife has a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK, and after seeing how easy and clean the filter replacement is in your video, I'm in! I've ordered the items from Amazon and will be clearing the "Change Engine Oil" message in both jeeps soon!

Jason, as you mentioned you like to get as much of the old oil to drain from the pan. I’m the same way. I pour just a small amount of knew oil to push out all the old. Makes the process a little go a little quicker and I know I’ve got all good/new oil in when I’m done. 🍻👍

I’m like you and want to drain as much as possible when I do an oil change so I usually go out in my garage first thing in the morning and pull the plug, then I go in and have some breakfast, go back out change the filter and then finish up. Beautiful Jeep brother!

Just did my 2016 Wrangler sport today. I used 2 rags though. One for the oil change and one for dumping the old oil back in the jug.
I also ALWAYS check under the vehicle once I start it to make sure there is nothing leaking. I double check around the oil filter for leaks while running as well.

10 months later & the stay home stuff is still a reality & I just changed my oil in my 3.8 JK
I run the 10w-30 which is what the crate motor calls for on these. The 5w-20 was just for emissions standards for Jeep

Thanks dude! I find if the jeep sits more than a few days I still get that sound at startup so... just a design thing. I also swapped back to 5-20 since it's much cheaper. I did hear from an engineer that it is important to stick to what the engine builder recommends on engines with variable valve timing and other oil pressure activation stuff.
Excellent, you are like me a perfectionist. I too I change my oil between 5K and 6K miles usin full sysnthetic Mobil 1, and keep the engine under the hood very clean which keeps it cooler during Summer months. no grime and no leaks. I like your style very well executed. Cheers. 😊😊

I just got my first jeep and did the oil change. It is very satisfying to do a oil change on her. The best part is I don’t have to Jack her up. It takes 30mins or less

Great video buddy!!! I always tell folks that it is better to under tighten something like that (then just tighten it a bit more if leaks) than to over-tighten it and have to replace everything.

Ur making it really, really easy to do the oil change...
Here is a tip I use on my 10 quart premium synthetic oil change on my supercharged mustang GT. I drain each used oil container into a central container. I end up with a third of a quart of awesome oil for topping off or other projects. If your paying $10 a quart that stuff is gold. I also use a conventional oil catch bucket. I line the bucket with 2 of the Costco white kitchen garbage bags. Change the oil. Tie off the bags. Go to the recycling. Cut the corner of the bag. Drain and discard. Not one drop touches me or my bucket.

Incidentally, the 4.0 V6 in my 5th gen 4Runner is spec'd by Toyota to use 0W20. I'm actually considering trying 0W30 or even 40. These things make A LOT of valvetrain noise that I'd like to quiet down.
Also, the Jeep filter setup is much better. Toyota has a cartridge style too, but it's under the vehicle, and on a stock vehicle, the engine skid needs to be removed every time to access it. Which explains why it was missing from my used 4R that had been dealer serviced it's entire life till I bought it. I recently finally got around to drilling out the 4 broken bolts they left in there so I can install aftermarket skids.
It’s important to stick with the hot viscosity rating if the engine has variable valve timing like this Jeep since the systems depend on the oil.
I recently did my 3.8L oil... Went surprisingly smooth. I went back to 10W30 (original specified oil for the 3.8L) and went to a Motorcraft FL-400S filter... It's a touch bigger and cheaper than a Mopar filter. Has the same (maybe better?) anti-back flow valve. The oil specification changes due to Jeep needing to meet fuel economy regulations. Thinner viscosity oil can achieve that for very cheap- to an extent. Jeep doesn't change the internal specs for bearings and such when they change the oil specification though. That's probably the main source of issues for the newer Jeep engines. Sorry for the rant- "quarantine" does things to a man! LOL
Another important factor is the variable valve timing in the newer engines. They are designed to run with a very specific oil viscosity and when people change that... it changes how the whole system operates. That's why I don't change from the recommended -20 part of the rating. I learned that when I did the Ram engine... was cool .

My old 3.8L JK had terrible startup rattle if I used a mopar oil filter. Using a wix filter would mostly prevent it. I have not heard the issue on my '17 JKU. The thing I love about the cartridge is you don't have to cut open a metal filter to check for any metal debris or the like.

To quiet down internal noise, replace one quart of your engine oil with one quart of Marvel's Mystery Oil. It also keeps the internals spotless. Do some research on Marvel's and you may be impressed. I've been using the stuff for decades and still have quiet and smooth running engines. I have a 5.3 Chevy van with 280,000 miles with no leaks and zero oil burn and absolutely no noise which is common to have bad lifter noises. Love the channel!
Good advice, I used Marvel for decades as well... the smell reminded me of wrenching with my Grandpa. I have learned that the new technology is better and that having a quart of a product that burns off isn't good in the oil system. I still use it in all my air tools!

I installed a Stahlbus oil drain plug in my LJ. It makes draining the oil a breeze through the opening in my Savvy offroad engine/ transmission skid.
I recommend them to everyone.
I've never had anyone else change my oil, but I often see oil changes advertised for around $40. I run Rotella t6 and a premium filter, and my DIY oil changes are around $70.
Those oil change places must use the cheapest crap ever.....
I love a clean oil change. I just did an oil change yesterday, along with a timing chain service on my 3.8 JK. It was not a one towel job.

It's not bad, on a 3.8L, easiest I have ever done. As for the 3.6L? those are unchartered waters.

I used to do my own oil changes on all my vehicles when I had a place to do it. Once I got older and bad back and 29.95 oil changes I stopped doing my own. It got hard to dispose of the old oil. Oil changes are 69.95 here now so it’s worth it to crawl under and DYI.
I had a phase of having them done for a while too.

Back for my first few years with the Jeep and using traditional oil, I would change it on somewhat shorter intervals like you do. I drive the thing hard so better safe than sorry. Now that I'm using a high quality synthetic... it honestly doesn't do any extra good to change so early and the oil is much more expensive anyway. This particular oil is good for 8,000 miles or so but I'll still do it at around 5 or 6.

Thank you!!! I do like these tires a bunch, best riding tires on the street and highway and do great off road. The only real downside is that the BFG and Maxxis look way more aggressive so other than than the looks, they kick butt!
So after it’s changed ...what is process for checking for leaks or the right level. Should I let it run for 5 mins or something and then check it?
Start it up... look at the filter housing before you put the engine cover back on and look at the drain plug. Turn it off and check the dip stick... easy as that!
When you pull that filter off the cap you want to pull straight out don't torque it. It has a cold oil pressure bypass built in but if you break that connecting point your oil will bypass the filter all the time.

just did a oil change on my dads gladiator 4 days ago 1 i was bored 2 it needed it we went wheeling and the oil was 2k miles old and boy im glad i did it cause that oil was black as crazy as that sounds but we were out there for 2 hours,so 4 total front and back but also thank god i bought some molle panels that go on the bed for my dad as a surprise and some rotopax 2 for fuel and 1 for water and we used them since my dad carelessly said were fine when we went past a gas station and good thing i filled the rotopax whenever i bought em but yeah :D and also the truck is stock but it just has some factory mud terrains with some black rhino kelso wheels(In battleship grey) i bought for him as well :D (took my 15 year old self a bit to save up since i got my little responsibilities aka my wifi and gas for my little honda)

I have noticed with my 2014 even after upgrading to the Center Force Duel Friction clutch my start up noise is coming from my throughout bearing. It is also nice to know what to watch out for. My oil life reminder hasn’t gone off yet with close to 9,000 miles between oil changes. My dealer actually said not to change the oil before the reminder goes off. I’m also running a full synthetic oil.
Hey Jason, great video! It’s interesting that I’ve had my JK since late 2013 and have never done an oil change. Its not that it’s difficult, I’ve been changing my own oil since I was 16 (holy crap, that’s over 40 years!) It’s just been too convenient and actually relatively cheap to get it done at the dealer (seems like they always have special multiple oil change packages). I do like the new filter location, it’s much easier than the old style more near the engine bottom, with the associated oil spill as you remove it (yuk).
Well, I just did it for the first time this weekend. I can’t say I matched your single paper towel for cleanup, haha. It went quite well. I did go with the same oil you used so Lucas should be sending you some free products (haha). Again, great video! It motivated me to start doing it myself and using better oil than the dealer likely uses is another advantage.

Try a fumoto drain valve and a small tube into the catch container . Zero towels needed.
I didn't get a oil filter seated all the way once, backed out of the bay and saw the mess. That was 20 yrs ago, and to this day I still triple check the filter.

I've used Valvoline advanced full synthetic. I live where temps fluctuate and its been a great oil on preventing wear and not becoming thin at high or thick in colder temperatures. I also run a BG Epr engine clean every 10k and add BG MOA to my oil and that has made the rattle virtually stop. BG can't be sold to the public but can find on Amazon for around 50.00. Everyone has their preferred oil just remember to not go back and forth between manufacturers if you can prevent it. Lastly I love your front bumper. Who makes that?

I do have an Exxon Valdez disaster happen to me... trying to pull the oil filter on my '15 Ram 1500, holding it with one hand, it slipped, flipped and dropped on my face. needless to say that by the time I could pick t up, my fave and shirt were covered in oil... not to mention the whole floor. ugh!
That is exactly what happened... I think I actually wiped it with the single paper towel out of habit not realizing it was fairly saturated at that point .... doh!
Oh and my Ram is my least favorite vehicle to do an oil change on! You have to do an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course to get the filter out of that thing! It's awful.

I would luv to do my own oil changes, especially with it being so easy on a Jeep. But, living in an apartment with only an outdoor parking spot, it's not really feasible, especially in snow and -20°C temps.

The stewards have some questions regarding the glovage. We see you put on gloves then whilst pouring fresh oil into the jeep you are sans gloves. Mysteriously gloves reappear on YOUR hands during the absolutely riveting cleaning the oil drain/recycling doohickey scene. Please explain, did you reuse the gloves, or were TWO sets of gloves used which would nullify the perfect score? You have some 'splaining to do.
Extraordinarily good catch! Those are the same gloves and to be honest... it was kind gross putting them back on cause they were a bit sweaty... LOL But, single set of gloves used!!!
I like to reuse the same set of gloves until they tear. When I’m done I wash my hands (gloves on) just like I would if I wasn’t wearing gloves, and then set them to dry until next time.

I’ve tried about 3 different oil catch devices from Walmart bought to auto store and using them to change the oil on my 3” lifted 35” tire 13’ 2door JK, it ALWAYS resulted with oil all over the oil catch and ground with the annoying laying down with the catch to follow the pour to keep in the catch. My fix? Paint bucket with lid. After numerous trips to auto store to discard used oil, I quickly found buying a paint bucket lip pour guide to be a must because the used oil drums at the auto stores (at least the 4 different ones in my area I’ve gone to) had the smallest entry point to to pour into. Don’t understand why they have that lid on their drums knowing the obvious, but save yourself time/frustration and the NEED to walk in with shop towels to clean yourself off with once done. Yeah, for whatever annoying reason each time they also were never nice enough to give me some paper towel etc to wipe my hands off after watching me once done. Side note: the store bought catches, most are the flat pan catches are every curse word worthy when trying to dispense in their used drums. Lol. I’ve even taken my used oil to recycling garbage dump and even theirs were either “full” closed lid or some even stopped doing that of which I can only assume they’ve had people make an absolute mess doing so.
I've never forgotten to put the drain plug in before filling with oil, but I have however forgotten to reinstall the oil filter in specific Dodge engines after doing a transmission swap. That makes one hell of a mess.
I can't even imagine how much clean up that would be... LOL Good share!

Do you use the 0w20 only because it doesn't get cold in SoCo? Would you recommend that to someone who lives where it gets cold in winter?
It would have to be north pole temps to make a difference but I recommend using the stock 5w20 purely due to the cost difference. If I leave the jeep parked for several days and do a cold start ... it still makes the rattle but for just one second. Shorter than it used to for sure and during periods of use, it never does it. So it's up to you.

That was not the first question I had Jason. The first question I had was why are you using your hood prop on a Jeep?
That's easy, the Jeep is too tall and when I tried to flip the hood over it smashed the door opener track so we don't do that anymore.

Jason, great video. My dad and I have been just using conventional with a 3k - 3.5k mike interval. He had an 04 WJ purchased new with the infamous 4.7L sludge monster V8. After 200k the valve cover gasket was leaking, so we took off the valve cover to change the gasket and the cams and entire valvetrain still looked brand new.
I’ve had my 17 JK since it had 5 miles and have been changing the oil every 3k on the dot with conventional. I now have 60k. I peeked down the fill tube with a light and everything still looked new. The valve tick only happens for about 1 second if I don’t drive the Jeep for a couple days. If I drive every day it never happens. Cheers!

Yeah, the rattle isn't horrendous, I just like solving that stuff with technology. The main thing I gain from going with synthetic is how long it lasts at full protection. If you watch this video again and check the oil coming out... that has about 7000 miles on it and looks amazingly good. I think this thing is around 70k and original clutch doing solid so far.
yup poured about $120 worth of motul in the floor, only noticed when i looked down and saw my feet were in a puddle, many 4 letter words flew around the garage that day.

This video (plus taking into account it's now pushing $80 in my area to get a lub,oil & filter change) got me to finally go back to changing my own oil. I did my 2018 Jeep Wangler Unlimited JL. Ok, so I'm a little rusty. I have one of the oil pans you showed (not the nice catch jug) and I bought a jug with a wide mouth to pour the oil from the pan into. Well let's just say it was far from a perfect oil change. I will be either trying to stop the oil 1/2 way into the change and pour that, or spring for a new jug / pan combo like you showed! Practice makes perfect :-)
On a separate note, when I put the oil plug back in, as I got about 2/3 through turning it, I could feel a grittiness. I'm thinking I have metal shavings in the pan??? I could feel no shavings in the oil that was on the plug itself. Not sure what to do about that.... any good suggestions would be welcome. I seams like I should be inspecting further and getting the filings out somehow. Since it's still under warranty maybe I should just report it to my jeep dealer service writer...?? Thanks
